  • @lunaristhomsen6941
    @lunaristhomsen6941 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +217

    fun fact: yugioh didn't originate as a card game. it originated as a manga about a kid being possessed by the spirit of a pharaoh punishing people in gambling games to the death. in the original yugi vs kaiba game. they were parodying... MTG! blue eyes white dragon is literally a Shivan Dragon stand in! The thing is though, people were hyped for a trading card game based on the one in the manga so much that the entire thing pivoted to their own spinoff solely about card games, and went through multiple iterations of card layouts and rulesets before settling on the ones we see today.

    • @venerable_nelson
      @venerable_nelson 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      Watching season one and season two makes it even more obvious how little the actual card game was flushed out in the anime. So many made up rules in season one. Season two is when they came up with the idea of tributing to summon stronger monsters.
      In season one, Yugi fuses a monster and spell card in his duel against Kaiba. A monster and spell card!

      @@venerable_nelson I think I heard someone describe everything up to and including Duelist Kingdom as basically Dungeons & Dragons except as a card game, with the duel platform as a DM. There are some vague rules but as long as you can justify bs you make up as something that makes sense in-universe, it's fair game.
      Battle City onwards is the actual game taking shape, though the shows always ended up adding some wacky stuff for drama that just wasn't feasible to do in the context of the actual game. Perhaps most notably, the Egyptian God Cards wouldn't be introduced to the game proper until like a decade later, and I heavily suspect the Sacred Beasts introduced in GX were basically retrains to make them reasonable for real-life play.

    • @DrizzyDefenseForce
      @DrizzyDefenseForce 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      More fun facts: In the original Japanese manga, the card game isn't called "Duel Monsters," it's actually called "Magic & Wizards." Referring to MTG and Wizards of the Coast.
      "Duel Monsters" was exclusive to the anime.

    One kind of video id love to see is a yugioh story time true or false, because there are some WILD things that happened in yugioh history. ... you're missing the point being made. At a basic level, hand knowledge *doesn't* actually give you information. Not really. Often times, it's that much easier to trick the opponent who does have hand knowledge, because they're too confident. Like you said, they think they know. Which makes it easy to exploit. Your rebuttal just doesn't work, because that's literally the point being made. Only someone bad at the game benefits from it, and someone good at the game can then turn that benefit into a negative for them anyway.
      The actual rebuttal is kinda what Cimo was getting at. Yugioh games are much shorter. Getting a snapshot of the opponent's hand at one time during the game means more when that snapshot represents a larger portion of the game. Hand knowledge would be strong in Magic too if it lasted the rest of the game. Another key aspect that gets overlooked is, Yugioh doesn't really like letting its players draw cards. Yes, it's full of searchers that grab other searchers than grab other searchers, but those all require you to show your opponent that card. So effectively, the player with hand knowledge is maintaining that knowledge. There's no real opportunity to obtain information that is hidden from the player who used the Dustshoot. That makes all the difference in the world. In magic, if my opponent casts Thoughtseize on turn 1, they're only going to see at most half of the cards I'll play this game. Turn 1 Dustshoot can genuinely mean they see 100% of all the cards you could play for the entire game.

      But the idea is that the skillful player, who can glean information from body language, sequencing, and resource management, won't benefit very much from the hand knowledge because they will have already deduced most of it.

    Something important that's clearly shown from these numbers is that you can have fancy, very rare, very expensive versions of cards without them being compromised by endless reprints and cents of a dollar versions. Yugioh and Pokemon both do this very well, Magic has a big problem with reprints though, including but not limited to the Reserved List.

While I completely support and understand that decision, I can't help but miss that long, conversational format on his channel. While I don't think it would cater to the same audience as his previous podcast did, I think the two of you have incredible chemistry, and I, for one, would LOVE to see these videos become either a semi-regular podcast, or an extended series of videos on each channel. I could listen to literal hours and hours of the two of you discuss the two games, how they're different, how you both feel as you learn countless new things, swapping old stories from when you were both competitive players or in the "good ole days" of your respective games, etc. Idk how long this collaboration will last, and I would have never seen it coming, but I couldn't be more strapped in to see what else you both have for us in the future.

    • @dontmisunderstand6041
      @dontmisunderstand6041 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      There's also the fact that most of the time, cards that add more cards to the hand require you to show your opponent that card. So the hand knowledge ends up applying to a significantly larger portion of the game than even the turn count suggests. Hand knowledge would be a much bigger deal in Magic too if it effectively lasted the rest of the game.

    • @Metallicity
      @Metallicity 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yugioh players really over focus on "hand knowledge" when talking about these cards. Yes, it is insanely good to be able to play around your opponent's hand perfectly. But you know what else is good? Taking the best card *out* of your opponent's hand so you don't even have to play around it to begin with, and also means you aren't forced to play a four card hand against their five card hand. Plus, by the same argument that hand knowledge is more impactful than in Magic due to the game ending more quickly, hand ripping is more impactful since players start with fewer cards. The fact that even a random hand rip is still among the best effects in the game, while cards that just let you look at the opponent's hand (but don't really do anything else) are garbage should at least tell you something about how each part of the effect might be valued.

    • @MajesticSundew
      @MajesticSundew 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be fair, instant-speed cards are even more common in Magic than handtraps are in Yugioh. That said, one of the big differences (as CGB mentions) is that almost all of them are going to cost mana, meaning it's a lot easier to deduce what instants you might need to play around simply by looking at what mana your opponent has chosen to leave open (though of course that does open up the possibility of bluffing).

    • @alxhades6231
      @alxhades6231 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @Sutobuto
      @Sutobuto 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ?? No it's not, everyone's over-exaggerating hand knowledge effects so much just because of Talents. What's good about Talents is REMOVING the hand card you want, not because you can check their hand. So what if you know what handtraps your opponent has? If all you have is a starter there is no way you are even playing through that. Okay I only have Snash and I know they have Imperm, ok then what? You pass empty? Knowledge or without knowledge they are playing that Imperm no matter what. Even then you SHOULD be playing and baiting through certain handtraps on your combos regardless that hand knowledge did not matter at all.
      The only good thing about hand knowledge effects are that YOU wont lose to their combo lines that bait interruptions, i.e. if you see that the only thing your opp has is Diabellstar you can safely Imperm her without worrying about them going normal Ash.
      Hand knowledge as a SKILL is where the good shit lies. Keeping track of searches is already something that you should be doing if you arent a dogshit player. You dont track HANDTRAPS with hand knowledge, you track ENGINE PIECES and assume everything else is a handtrap, then as you play thru your combo you slowly single out which handtrap they might have and which one they dont.

    If I had to describe Seto Kaiba (at least in the duel monsters anime) as anything, it would be an anti hero. In fact, I’d argue he’s a poster child for an anti hero.
    He lacks the typical traits of someone you root for. He’s an asshole. He’s selfish. He stands for things we typically don’t root for: rugged individualism, money, power, “by any means necessary”.
    But he isn’t completely evil. He performs malicious acts but it is presented as small scale compared to the rest of the show. He often finds himself aligned with Yugi & co. even if it is reluctantly. And there are things in his life and moments throughout the series where he understands that he has to do something either for the greater good or to protect someone else. Especially Mokuba, who manages to humanize him and make you root for Kaiba when he isn’t dueling Yugi or Joey. Since he isn’t presented as a normal hero, he can do “good guy” things with his own “flair” allowing the audience to be entertained (like when he roasts someone he’s dueling).
    Honestly, he’s like Prince Zuko from Avatar but without the needed redemption arc.
    However in Season 0, Duel Monsters S1E1, and the Pyramid of Light movie (kinda) he’s presented as an actual antagonist.

    I think something that was missed was how the activation clause works: the opponent just needs to have 4 or more cards in their hand for Trap Dustshoot to go off. It doesn't need them to draw a card, it doesn't need them to get a hand of 4 or more, they just need to have 4 or more cards in their hand at the time you want to activate this card.
    So because Yu-Gi-Oh's starting hand is 5 cards, Trap Dustshoot already is live. So Set it, it becomes playable after you pass turn, and now your opponent has 6 cards after their Draw Phase. So unless they can play a card in their Draw Phase that allows them to discard 2 other cards for a total of 3, Trap Dustshoot can be activated and rip a Monster Card out of the hand, which can be any Handtrap that would counter a different card, any Starter card that the opponent needed to get going, or an Extender that would make them able to keep their plays going. AND you get knowledge of what other cards they have and thus what else they would be going for.
    Because when cards are the only resource of the game unless they have an extra cost in their text, you do not get an idea of what is being played until it happens. Whereas Magic has turns of set up with cards that give specific mana to allow certain cards to work, thus giving away the color deck, then what mana is being used gives away the strategy.

Hand information is insanely important, but for a card that reveals information to be good, it needs to do other things. Good examples of this are "duress" and "thoughtseize"

      @@profozpin227 The hand information is pretty unimportant there. If you somehow got MIB memory wiped as part of the resolution of Thoughtseize and no longer knew the non-discarded contents of your opponent's hand, it'd still be played. For an example of what pure hand information is actually worth, look at Gitaxian Probe. You have to make it a cantrip that costs no mana before magic players will care (and there it still has the benefits of being an instant for certain decks that care).

    Its wild how close he got to these numbers just by tugging at strings and logic looping experience. That's incredible. Also, cgb if you read this. You should totally watch the rest of season 1. The main villian actually can read minds and see cards in your hand!
