Welcome to Rush! I am a new fan myself. 'Tom Sawyer' is probably their most popular song, but they had a large variety in their music for a 40-year career (the drummer and lyricist, Neil Peart, retired from Rush in 2015 and passed away from brain cancer in 2020). The singer, Geddy Lee, is also the bass player (considered one of the best rock bassists) and keyboard player. In their live performances, Geddy will sometimes do all of that at once (and use synth pedals while playing the bass). The guitarist, Alex Lifeson, is the founder of Rush and has been Geddy's best friend since they were both 13-year-old middle school students. Neil joined the band after their first album was released in 1974 (their previous drummer, John Rutsey, left Rush due to health issues and creative differences). Geddy and Alex noticed Neil liked to read, and asked him to write their lyrics, to which he agreed. Neil is widely considered to be one of rock's best percussionists. Rush is known for writing complicated music with a lot of time signature changes. For a future Rush reaction, I suggest the live version of 'Between the Wheels' from the R30 tour in Germany. It's a heavier Rush song that features an awesome guitar solo by Alex LIfeson.
Thank you for giving me some clarity on the history of this amazing band. I’m only one song in but I know I’ll be blown away by the entire discography. I will check out your suggestion. 🫶🏽🤟🏾
Welcome to the Rush fandom. All of their songs are magical like this in my opinion. I’ve listened to them so many times I know every note but still somehow hear something new every time. I can’t explain it.
Hey my RUSH fan friend, I only got to see RUSH live once (Power Windows Tour) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada! 40 yrs of great Canadian Progressive Rock! Life long fan! "Trees" is one of my favorite songs, or "Red Barchetta" RIP Neal Peart, "The Professor on the Drums" Great Video! Glad you enjoyed! 😀👌👍✌
Thanks Javaughn! I love Rush, too - The Rush Army is big broad and cool, because this band is also. The more you get to know about this band, the more you will appreciate them.
Widely regarded as the finest rock performance ever recorded! You'll be amazed! Unmatched atmospherics. I've seen it at least 1000 times and the ending guitar solo still gives me goose-bumps every time! Absolutely MAGICAL!
Great reaction Javaugn! Thanks for sharing your journey into the world of rock n roll with us. Don't worry about being slightly speechless. Our minds were blown too when this came out decades ago. This one was my senior year in high school. For your next Rush reaction, I highly recommend their performance of the song YYZ live in Rio de Janiero. South American rock crowds are insane. Who knew you could sing along to a song with no lyrics.
Masterpiece is the correct term for this 3 piece band from Canada. You also watched one of the best drummers of all time Neil Peart. Great reaction!! 😊
RUSH !!!! Such an important trio!!! These 3 guys created their own genre because of their sound and lyrics. I saw them in concert in the mid 80’s. And the best drummer on the planet. May he rest in peace.
I was introduced to Rush by a friend from (not kidding!) The Salvation Army band camp. The first song I heard was "Bastille Day" from Caress of Steel in 1975 when I was in high school. I immediately went out and got the first three records and have been a Rush fan from that day to this. So by the time Moving Pictures came out I had a well established love for Rush. But we had no idea how popular that particular record would become. Permanent Waves had given us the radio-friendly track "The Spirit Of Radio" which got a bit of airplay on mainstream rock radio when it came out so we knew that Rush was more popular than the music press (Rolling Stone magazine in particular) would have lead one to believe. Then Moving Pictures dropped and Rush were THE band to see that year. We usually went up tp B.C. to see them, then we'd typically go to the Seattle and Portland shows. 1981 was a banner year for Rush in the Pacific North West (Wet?) as Rush sold out the 18,000 seat Coliseum (later dubbed Key Arena and now known as Climate Pledge Arena*) for 2 nights straight. My best friends and I rode our motorcycles to Vancouver, B.C., Spokane, Wa and the Portland, Or shows and every one was in the largest indoor venue in the city. That was an amazing summer as we had just graduated university and would soon be engrossed in our careers and life would not afford us the opportunity to be so liberal with our time and our money. I first saw Rush live in 1976 when they were actually an opening act for STYX in Spokane, WA then I happen to be in Toronto in June of tat year and got to see them headline at Massy Hall for one of the shows that beame the All The World's A Stage album. I was in both cities for Salvation Army youth events and in both cases had the Saturday evening free of scheduled activities, meetings, etc. My friend from band camp was also there (he's a retired Salvation Army Officer, of all things) and we went to see Rush. I was very fortunate see at least one show on every tour thereafter until the end. I found a woman who liked Rush and I married her. We took the kids to their first Rush shows and introduced them to classic and prog-rock from the cradle. When we talk about "the Rush family" we really mean family. So you are now a part of the the Rush family, welcome! *"Climate Pledge" is a stupid name for the building. It sounds like an eco-friendly wood furniture polish.
I was 13 when Tom Sawyer came out and I had the same reaction as you. Later that year I saw my 1st Rush concert and every tour to the end. 49 times I saw them over the years and want more. Unfortunately that's all I get. All we get. I miss them dearly. RUSH FOREVER!
Greatest band of all time lyrically and musically, all 3 are virtuosos on their instruments!!!! Try driven, cut to the chase, xzanadu live 81 must watch, ,re d barchette, YYZ live in Rio, must watch spirit of radio, freewill, natural science, big money, far cry, half the world, witch hunt 2112 whole album, A Farwell to Kings whole album, Hemispheres, whole album, mission, marathon, Heresy, the music and the lyrics are unmatched masterful musicians
Not just another progressive metal band. Rush was the progenitor of progressive metal. When inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame, they were called the "god fathers of progressive metal." And Rush counts among its fans many of the bands you've been hearing, like Tool and Dream Theatre.
They’re Canadian. Dream Theater idolizes this band. Greatest 3 person band ever! My fav. Band period. Side note: never ever pause during a guitar solo.
Neil Peart is frequently included in lists of the greatest drummers of all time. Overall, Neil Peart's combination of technical skill, creativity, and songwriting made him a standout musician during his prime, and he left a lasting legacy in the world of music.🥀Rest in Peace - your greatness is missed.
What’s so mind blowing is all that music is made by only 3 man band absolutely phenomenal. I’ve been listening to them for years and still blows my mind
Welcome to the world of Rush. I was 13 in 1976 when I bought my first album 2112 and have loved them ever since… Check out the live versions of Xanadu and La Villa Strangiato
It's always such a joy watching a young person discover Rush. I know I speak for legions when I say welcome to the family. I HIGHLY recommend checking out their songs "The Weapon" and "Losing It". Also "Marathon". Oh, and everything else. ;)
Once you've wrapped your brain around the exquisite musicianship and sonic experience......you MUST take a deep dive into the lyrics. The percussionist (Neil Peart) was the main lyricist and he is no joke.. A voracious reader, his lyrics are deep and thought provoking. Really like none other. His also written books that are so easy and pleasurable to read. Highly recommend.
Welcome to RUSH! RUSH is the 0G. Dream Theater, Tool, Opeth, etc. are bands that RUSH inspired. Just be aware that RUASH went through many phases or periods during their 40+ year career. They started out more as a hard rock group like Led Zeppelin, and gradually were influenced by many bands and styles along the way, including the band The Police. So their sound became much more synth based. A good example of the blend of the original hard rock and the growing synthesizers is the song Xanadu.
Great reaction. Next from Rush should be either Limelight or The Spirit Of Radio. Your jaw will continue to drop. And due to your appreciation for things that rock at a high level, Rush once had an opening act called The Steve Morse Band that got standing ovations from Rush's audience on arena dates. You should check out their song The Introduction, Book Of Dreams or Simple Simon for some insanely high level rock music. John Petrucci of Dream Theater cites Steve Morse as his favorite guitarist and Alex Lifeson of Rush praises him effusively.
Hell do all of moving pictures from beginning to end OFF the charts ,yes Tom Sawyer a masterpiece, a lot of Rush's music is a masterpiece la villa strangoto, do all their instrumentals masterpieces
Welcome to Rush! Three master musicians from Toronto, Canada who had a 40 plus year career. Geddy Lee Vocals, Bass, keyboards and pedals Alex Lifeson acoustic and electric guitar, mandola, pedals and later keyboards Neil Peart drums, percussion and main lyrist. Unfortunately Neil Peart passed from brain cancer in January of 2020. He is considered one of the best drummers in rock. Other Songs Xanadu from Exit Stage Left Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour Natural Science from the Molson Amphitheatre Toronto Cheers FYI Lots of rock bands come from Canada 😉
@JustJavaugn I enjoyed your video and liked your editing. I am surprised that your subscriber count is so low- it appears this is because you are just starting. My suggestion is to follow the Rush rabbit hole. Rush is incredibly influential, and they have a strong and unbelievably loyal fan base that loves to watch young people experiencing Rush. I think you will love the music, and I think you will gain many subscribers.
Ah yes, you've discovered Canada's best export other than maple syrup. Guitarist Alex Lifeson, Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart, and Geddy Lee on bass, keyboards and vocals. Three guys made this much sound. Their sound evolved over the years and its fun to explore the 1970s, and the more synthisizer driven 1980s after this. (Subdivisions that came out the next year in 1982 is phenomenal lyrically.) Even as they matured into a different sound in the 1990s and 2000s, their catalog is vast. RIP Neil
Neil Peart drum solo.(video) This is a good example of why many consider him the greatest percussionist of all time. He incorporates more than just drums.
This song was released in 1981 recorded in 1980. and a fun fact about this song as you can see, the video was recorded in the recording studio. When they were recording their album, this was actually one of the songs they disliked the most out of everything they recorded. They reworked the song multiple times adding in the keyboard. I think it was the a last edition by Getti Lee the lead, singer, bass & keyboard player. And so the final song you hear on the album is the final reworked version. They were content to put on, but they really did not like the song. Or felt it was to their level of how they like to make music and back then things were laid on magnetihc tape tracks. So vocals, guitar, keyboard, drums done on their own tracks. So reworking the song more than what they did would have been a lot of work back then. Unlike today. Everything's in the computer. A little easier to final mix something without the brutal process of cutting and spicing tape and all that stuff. So They record a video while. They're recording the song cause I don't think they wanted to revisit this song in a video style of any kind. They weren't really liking it only for it to be released by the label that liked the song so imagine their surprise that it becomes their number one biggest hit loved by their fans. Won a multitude of awards, the song that band did not like and reworked multiple times and only put it on the album because they had invested so much time in the song and needed to get it done for the album for it to be their biggest hit in their career.
Rush IS the greatest band ever period !!! 3 Guys !! Check out the following tracks : Witch hunt, Vital signs, Limelight, Subdivisions, Natural Science, Red Barchetta, Jacob's ladder, Middletown dreams, Marathon.. and then there is another 180 songs to go through !!!!!
Love this one from Rush - one of my favorites! A word of advice: Never, ever, interrupt a solo or group playing instruments in the middle part of a song without vocals. You need to listen to that break down again for yourself and listen all the way through because it's epic - maximum impact if you don't stop the video. Looking forward to following you on your journey! .
Just subbed. You seem to be a cool guy. Keep checking out the classics from the 60s, 70s, 80s and some 90s. All that great music will change your life.
@@justjavaughn Led Zeppelin: when the levee breaks, rock ‘n’ roll, dazed, and confused, Kashmir. Boston: foreplay long time, more than a feeling, smoking, hitch a ride. The Cars: just what I needed, drive, moving in stereo, good times roll, heartbeat city, stranger eyes. That should get you started pretty well.
Yes, Rush was a prog band, but Tom Sawyer was absoltuely a pop song. Their most pop song ever. I was a huge Prog fan myself in the 70's, and grew up in Toronto, 2112 was their best album as far as I'm concerned. As an FYI, YYZ is the designation of then Toronto International Airport - now Pearson.
American here. Love what I see. Thanks brother, keep it up. You might show us some of your native music. I would love to hear it. My wife agrees. God bless my friend.
Rush were a trio of virtuosos. The highest caliber of musicianship in rock with equality complex and difficult songs. Their fan base, high was heavily men, were mainly musicians. The guitarists went to see Alex, the bass players went to see Geddy and drummers and everyone went to see Neil. Neil got a lot of attention because he was truly excellent and his style was very physical. They were able to do something few bands could ever pull off. They’d go into the studio with new material. They’d record the definitive version of a song and then spend the rest of their careers reproducing the studio performance live and doing it perfectly. All of that is damn near impossible. I’d recommend listened to 3 albums to start- Moving Pictures, the album this song is on, 2112 and Exist Stage Left, a live album.
This was the very first band I ever saw live in concert... I was 15 years old never heard of the group and unexpectedly wound up at a show it blew me away to see three musicians so talented and so fan focused. They love performing live for their fans. This is great progressive rock but I suggest you go back to the beginning and check out some of the early stuff from Pink Floyd and "yes" and others. One of my favorites is the band Jethro Tull. I find it amazing that they can incorporate flute into progressive rock music and the organ / keyboards / every format of those instruments included as their discography grew is just amazing . I say go back to the beginning and check out how these bands progressed over the years and the music developed. Great to appreciate tool but tool got everything from this early stuff so you should understand where they got their talent from and their ideas and then took it to the next level
So now you know who Rush are. Most of the bands you named and many others are all inspired by this band. You'll begin to see this the further you go into Rush's catalog of 167 studio songs on 19 albums. The Spirit of Radio is my recommendation for a next reaction 🤘
Agree 100% !!! I feel so fortunate for being a teenager in the 80's - we had the best of everything! What a diverse mix of music we had to listen to - all natural, no auto tune and actual TALENT! I can't listen to one minute of the "music" they pump out now. It's just auto tune crap
Welcome to Rush! I am a new fan myself. I Love that!! "That door will never close" perfectly articulated. ❤
The amazing 3-man band. Deep catalog, my friend. One of the greatest bands you'll ever hear. Welcome to a next level journey. So many bangers.

Another must-see. The crowd enthusiasm is off the chart! You can see the surprise in the performers' faces!
Congrats ... you discovered Rush! Buckle up you're in for a wild ride!

Another example of lyrics that are far deeper than just "the beat and the song".
This is a classic of Lyrical Imagery!
You just stumbled on the deep well of magical and life altering music that is Rush. Canada's gift to the world ! Still relevant 40+ years later.
Hi Javaughn, sounds like you have met your musical match. Rush can meet that need. Thankyou for a great reaction.
Your journey is just beginning. I grew up listening to Rush. Not just their music but also their lyrics will enrich your life.Great reaction.
Rush is singular and exceptional. They influenced many bands since.
Limelight, Ghost of a chance , subdivisions, analog kid 🔥🔥🔥🔥

You are in for such a good time!
🤗 Subbed for Rush Reactions! 🥂🎉 Happy New Years! 🖖🏿🥰🐰
My god it’s so fantastic. I work with a lot of younger black kids. Early 20s. I play Rush loud as hell. “This isn’t hip hop but it is bad ass.”
That is the way we all felt first listen. Thanks for sharing your Rush inauguration. Have fun with it.
1. Try La Villa Strangiatto or The Spirit of Radio next.
2. They're even better live.
You're just at the beginning. Their entire catalog is amazing from their early stuff to their 80s run to their last album. Just incredible
Welcome! Rush were making music for 40 years. Enjoy! 😎

This band is awesome, especially with only three musicians!
Prepare yourself. This has been my favorite group for 40 years. RUSH will make you smarter.

PS - I'm an older fan, I was 12 when this song was released. Saw them for the first time when old enough to drive to Toronto in 1984, at age 16.
The song is a masterpiece. Rush is so unique. Very talented. The drum signatures change several times. Phenomenal! 👍
They’re Canadian. Dream Theater idolizes this band. Greatest 3 person band ever! My fav. Band period.
Side note: never ever pause during a guitar solo.
Errr. The Police, best three member band. Ever....
@@TriptoCoSorry, you are not correct. Rush by far and away outshines them.

You've encountered just the beginning of Rush... Dont stop, there's much more greatness to discover in this band
Looking forward to following you on your journey! .
I love Rush!! Blessed to have seen them on their last tour!! RIP Neil Peart, best drummer ever!! Please hear Limelight
Yes Roundabout
Welcome to the perfect song and perfect band!!
Just subbed. You seem to be a cool guy. Keep checking out the classics from the 60s, 70s, 80s and some 90s. All that great music will change your life.
Any suggestions?
This is a deep rabbit hole. Check out Spirit of Radio, YYZ (live in Rio), and Neil Peart's drum solo in Frankfurt.
American here. Love what I see. Thanks brother, keep it up. You might show us some of your native music. I would love to hear it. My wife agrees. God bless my friend.
Solid reaction.
I find it amazing that they can incorporate flute into progressive rock music and the organ / keyboards / every format of those instruments included as their discography grew is just amazing
. I say go back to the beginning and check out how these bands progressed over the years and the music developed. Great to appreciate tool but tool got everything from this early stuff so you should understand where they got their talent from and their ideas and then took it to the next level
Loved your reaction! Good journey :) Peace!
Another great 3 man band that is also Canadian is called Triumph. Try them out too.
So now you know who Rush are. Most of the bands you named and many others are all inspired by this band. You'll begin to see this the further you go into Rush's catalog of 167 studio songs on 19 albums. The Spirit of Radio is my recommendation for a next reaction 🤘
Growing up in the 80's was a special time for music and Rush was one of the best bands ever!
Agree 100% !!! I feel so fortunate for being a teenager in the 80's - we had the best of everything! What a diverse mix of music we had to listen to - all natural, no auto tune and actual TALENT! I can't listen to one minute of the "music" they pump out now. It's just auto tune crap
Thank you for this reaction. Welcome to your Rush journey. I would like to see your reaction to Freewill and The Spirit of Radio.
YYZ live in Rio..... after getting used to their other stuff.
Review Rush playing YYZ live in Rio. Your mind will be blown!
With this Band Lyrics are so great , one of the best Bands anywhere for lyrics ,about life
Welcome friend, to opening up yourself to a new world!!!!
Only 3 dudes that’s absolutely amazing
Facts. It sounds like 4 to 5 instruments sometimes.
