I'm a female and I have loved Rush since I first heard the album 2112 in 1977. As a matter of fact, the very last song of the album "Tears", I taught myself to play on my first guitar. I listened to that song and literally played until my fingers bled. I couldn't read music and did NOT know about different tunings so I literally had to figure out each note and chord progression by myself. Maybe, but it is what I enjoyed, along with many other genres. I was a fan from the get-go and when my girlfriend and I would go to bars (the late 70s) the band playing would typically ask if anyone wanted them to play a request -- and I'd always yell out, "Rush!" They would look back at me, roll their eyes, and say, "Yeah, right...no one can do Geddy's voice." No one ever remotely tried. But...I've been a full-on prog rock fan since the early days of Genesis with Peter Gabriel. Would love to see you do more bands of that nature here...and to talk about Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. As a Rush fan, Time Stand Still has always been one of my favorites because it’s some of Neil’s best storytelling: a man wishing that a good life wasn’t passing so quickly. It hits so much harder now that the great man is gone. Aimee Mann’s voice adds the right amount of wistfulness and depth, and it’s just perfection.

@debbieplato5107 I didn't get them until Neil died then I was listening to progressive stuff and I'm like they are really good. Wish I was into them like my brother when I was younger.
Yes!! I agree. Aimee Mann is a very talented and underrated Artist and I am surprised her solo albums weren't bigger 'cause I love 'Whatever', 'I'm With Stupid', 'Lost In Space' and 'Bachelor No. 2.'
Their early work tended toward sci-fi and cerebral, which just didn't really attract many women. There are few absolutes, but generalities exist for a reason. That started changing around Spirit of Radio and really changed with Moving Pictures.
How many other female fans have you met? Have you gone to any of their concerts? If so, how many women did you see? The idea came from a stark reality that the percentage of female fans has been so minuscule for so long. If they existed, they never made it known, and they never showed up for the concerts.
My first concert was Rush. I was 13. I love them. They are one of my favorite bands and I am a female. I have many female friends who absolutely love them as well.
64 yo Gramma here -Back in high school I heard about 2112 and Trees from this band called Rush. I was deeply into Tolkien and it was almost impossible to find anything that referred to his works. In my mind I placed Rush up with Mozart and Bach in a 'listen to it on a rainy day' kind of attitude. I was set to graduate and life was moving too quickly for me to dive deep into their music. Then several years later I dated a self styled audiophile and heard Rush again on his Nakamichi tape deck. He taught me what good quality sound was like and my brain had leveled off enough to enjoy the multi level engagement that Rush requires. I've always been a tomboy and felt it was my duty to listen to my dad's stories about his work and then, when married, my husband's. I think this added to my devotion to Rush; if hubs loved it, I loved it, too. But after thirty years I can truly say I love Rush just because I love them. And my audiophile, of course!
I am a female fan in my late 20s. I like a lot of Canadian Classic Rock bands like Rush, Harem Scarem, Triumph, April Wine, Loverboy, The Headpins, Kim Mitchell, The Guess Who, Chiliwack and Trooper. I am also a fan of Aimee Mann and 'Til Tuesday and have all her solo albums.
I'm female, I've always loved Rush. Born in 1973 and grew up to their music. Never got the privilege to see them in concert. That would of been amazing just couldn't ever afford it. 🤗❤✌
I’m a fiftysomething Canadian female. I’ve loved Rush since I was a kid and heard their songs on the radio. As a teenager, my brother and I played the crap out of Moving Pictures and Signals. Subdivisions really spoke to me, growing up in a small town as it was similar, in many ways, to the burbs.
Agreed...I'm 61 now, but in the early 80's just out of high school I had several female friends who rocked out to RUSH....maybe a little technical for simpletons....but we all jammed with RUSH!!!!!
Female Rush fan here. Saw every tour since '86. Time Stand Still is actually my favorite Rush song, one that resonates even more and more the older I get.
As a fan of Rush since I was 10, i loved classic rock but I developed an appreciation of punk and new wave music. Still , I loved Rush and followed them avidly. I Married in my 20’s to a fan of New wave/punk, to which we shared common musical interest. But I remember a road trip, after listening to mixed tapes of the day, I threw in exit stage left, tape two, side 1, which had a guitar solo by Alex, then the trees and Xanadu. She was blown away, couldn’t believe music like that could be live. Still thought I was a bit nerdy for liking Rush. But respected their music. We’ve been to many concerts, we met at a U2 concert. Seen the likes of REM, Depeche Mode, The Cure, erasure, Pearl jam, … eclectic alternative like front 242, delirium, suzanne Vega, and on and on. But then for the first time, she came to a Rush concert with me … R40, simply because I told her this might be the last show they ever do. … her words “This is the best concert I’ve ever seen in my life”. Nuff said.
I am a woman in my 50s, and I have always been a huge RUSH fan from the start. I love the music, 🤟🏻 and the harmony is amazing. But we can't ever forget how they Rocked in the 80s which I was lucky enough to see the 3. I still pop on a CD and blast it while cooking, cleaning, and / or just needing to sit back and listen 🎶 feel the music. Rush will always be a part of my life, forever, and what great memories ♥️ of my youth. I relive every time I hear them, and it is like time stood still.... Ty
Time Stand Still is one of my all-time favorite Rush songs. It may not be as iconic as some of their others, but it just gives a great feeling when you hear it. It's a great reminder to live in the moment and enjoy when you have when you have it. Also, my mother was a HUGE Rush fan and introduced me to them.
@@ProfessorofRock I get that it's a meme, just surprised I have never heard it before. In my circle of friends, Rush was either appreciated for their ground-breaking sound or dismissed because they were not metal.
(Male here) Closer to the Heart always sounded like Rush's appeal to women. It's an emotional song, sung from the heart, and musically direct - no stunt performances, just honest music. Red Barchetta is similar. Spirit of Radio has that HUGE mass crowd feel, like moving everyone together. I think Limelight is just so universal. I'm saying I think (in my limited male understanding of any female generalizations in music) these make sense as songs that might appeal to women more than something like Hemispheres or La Villa Strangiato or By Tor & the Snow Dog. And YES, I know I'm just guessing, and I'm probably wrong, but if I were to guess, I think I would have guessed those songs might be favorites among female Rush fans. (Unleash the flames.)
My daughter was raised on RUSH as well as many other Prog Rock greats, like PinkFloyd, SAGA and YES! My own music is rock but is sub genre'd as Prog Rock. I've seen every concert of RUSH since Moving Pictures. My wife also loves RUSH. And she is a former fashion, hair and makeup model. Regardless of WHY they have lacked female fans over the years, there is no doubt, as the saying goes, "You may not be a big RUSH fan, but your favorite band probably is"! Long Live RUSH and the incredible body of work they have Gracefully Under Pressure, left us to enjoy for generations to come! RIP Neil Peart.
"Time Stand Still" is such a great song ... funky video too, LOL. But, Rush does have 1 female fan. My ex-wife loved this band. One of our favorite concert going experiences was Rush - Roll The Bones Tour. Such a great band. (R.I.P. Neil Peart).
My wife attended five Rush concerts with me. After my son was born, she would stay home and let him go with me. She attended one more with me and my son, their second to last ever concert in California. After she read Geddy’s recent book, she became much more interested in them. Rush is my now 22 year old son’s favorite band. Hope his kids like them as well.
The first concert I ever went to was RUSH at the Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland Maine in 1980 with two of my classmates, Heather and Andrea. Heather turned me on to Rush and she was right. They were amazing. Thank god for those two "girl fans".
I've been a Rush fan since I was 13-14 years old. These guys have been the soundtrack to my life. My wife brought me to tears when she included Time Stand Still in the slideshow she put together for our youngest son's Eagle Scout ceremony. It was the end of a very long road for him as a Scout and me as an adult leader, 12 years. (plus two more years for me after he headed off to college).
As an 80s guy Rush fan, its been especially gratifying to see the world change their view on Rush in the last decade or so. No longer the band critics love to hate, but now a hall of fame all time legendary band. The proliferation of reaction channels fawning over Rush is nice to see.
Counterparts is definitely not bad. Actually I think overall it is very good, maybe not their best but still good. The second half of Vapor Waves has the only tracks I ever skip...
I'm female and have been a fan of Rush since Moving Pictures! The fact that they're Canadian and Geddy Lee was born in North York like I was is icing on the cake! My brother's best friend was a schoolmate of Geddy's! I found their music to be amazing and could never understand why they didn't get more love outside of Canada!! They sure deserved it!!
The first rock concert I ever went to was Rush. I was 14, freshman in high school. Got exposed to their music several years before that and have loved them ever since. Was lucky to see them in concert several more times. I know many women than love Rush as much as I do.
Holy heck! I just discovered that Aimee Mann was a member of Ministry before 'Til Tuesday was formed! I never in a million years would have guessed that.
I went to their 8th last show ever, in Vancouver. I swear the crowd was 1/3 women and they were right into it!! And I have many female friends who are fans!
I ran a bar co-owned by Alex, on a trip to London my Ex and I got to go see Rush at Wembley stadium. After the show back stage my wife asked the guys “do you know what the best part of a Rush show is?” “ no lineup in the women’s washroom”’.

RUSH is the greatest band of talented musians and masterful songwriting EVER!!! The lyrics of Peart are incredible and the intricate weaving of super technical arrangements to support and express the emotions of those words is mind-blowing! Listen to Witch Hunt and let your imagination see the mob of villagers hunting you down. I still think about the Aircar that's 2 lanes wide being left in the dust by a Red Barchetta!!! Don't forget the poignant images of ballerinas in Losing It that still make me cry every time i hear that haunting violin..... SUPERB! I graduated in 1984 as a bass playing Valedictorian whose graduation speech was laced with RUSH lyrics (we can drag our dreams into existence with persistence) and who left DEVIATE FROM THE NORM on the wall of the locker room. 16:53. Haha. When I was in Junior High I would play the game “Wizardry” on my Apple II+ computer while listening to a Rush cassette tape over and over again. I finally grew out of playing hours on end of computer adventure/role playing games but I still listen to Rush as background music while I work. 😂
Rush was a very slow burn for me. I didn't like them for years, until I listened to the song "Trees". The lyrics pulled me in and I've loved them ever since.
It’s a similar story for me. I thought Geddy Lee sounded like a munchkin and that they sped up the tape or something. The song that pulled me in was “Limelight”. The lyrics made a lot of sense to me. Then I started paying attention to the lyrics of their other songs and noticed that they’re a lot deeper and more philosophical than most rock. After that I started listening to the music itself and I honestly don’t know how I could ever have failed to appreciate them.
Rush are my favorite band. My 12-yo daughter came up to me the other day and asked, "Dad, what's that Rush song with the lady singing 'Time Stand Still'?"
Adam knew that statement would generate a lot of comments, because OF COURSE there are many female RUSH fans! I get it though. The men I've known who were RUSH fans were pretty obsessed, like they would celebrate Neil Peart and Geddy Lee's birthdays... for a week, kind of adoration! They remind me of the Swifties level of devotion. Maybe we should call those men "RUSHIES"!
Rush concerts are filled with more dudes than Amon Amarth. It's a fact. But it's a great fact. Ladies are welcome and a welcome sight, but the fact the sound and lyrics Rush created simply and mainly attracts men, is like totally, organically cool.
I know college girls in the 80s that loved Rush's music. One the most popular bands on my dorm hall too! Great video! Time Stands Still is one of my favorite songs of theirs also!
That "Xanadu" opening with Olivia Newton-John rollerskating was kind of spine tingling too back in the day. (I did buy "A Farewell To Kings" and other Rush albums.)
You're not alone there, I saw Rush for the first time at the Hammersmith Odeon on the Permanent Waves tour, at the time I had the ATWAS live album and possibly the current album at the time so much of their late 70s stuff was new to me. That intro is just so atmospheric, it was like nothing I'd ever heard before.
@@shiroibasketshoes I've never seen that film, I'm assuming that as you referenced AFTK and a few others one might be Hemispheres and you do actually know what we're talking about. Do I forgive you.

I remember playing "Time Stand Still" and "Force Ten" when KDUP switched to AOR in the fall of 1987. I had brought in my own copy of "Moving Pictures" earlier and played "Red Barchetta" because some folks liked it. I'm still looking for The single of "Tom Sawyer" because the only copy that I had seen was warped all to sin. Thanks for this video, and have a nice evening. 🙂👍📀
As a female Canadian, I am very proud of the accomplishments of this band but, yeah, except for the single ‘Take Off’ with Bob and Doug MacKenzie, I can’t say I have been able to listen to much of their music. More’s the pity for me!
Slayer are the only platinum selling band with "zero" (literally under 200 at any time) female fans! And they have earned that with the masculine magic (Black Magic) of their music 🤘You can see PLENTY of chicks rocking out to Rush in South America in several videos here on YT.
Neil's lyrics are thought-provoking and earnest, about the fragility of the moment and persistence of memory. Aimee's voice is so beautiful and adds a haunting quality to the melody, softening out Geddy's already quite high range and emphasising the delicate quality of the lyrics. Proper genius songwriting and music production.
I knew a female DH who bought the Rush "Moving Pictures" album, and KJ a female music director of a Canadian radio station who sent me their extra Rush "Time Stands Still" 12 inch single, which is with my Rush albums.

I only found out recently that that sexy little giggle came from none other than Aimee Man.
My older brother took me with his friends to see RUSH in Omaha back in the day. 4 dudes and one wife. On the road trip there, we past a patrol car and the husband said, “watch this”. He grabbed his wife and put her legs up in the air. We got pulled over, and the patrolman was all, “Are you okay miss”? … Classic. First concert I ever went to
This was my very first Rush album. Got it when I was 15 and I couldn't wait to get all of their albums. This blows my mind. I never made this connection. Thanks for the "lesson", professor! 😂
Damn, PoR! I love your content! This video about Time Stand Still and Rush got me in the heart. I think what Rush did was the same as a top novelist and writer: they let you fill the gap. Enough structure lyrically to not impede imagination, but not forcing the message on to the listener. I give them credit for me reaching a conclusion that I didn't have all the answers and maybe no one ever did. It went from a religion to me to listen to Rush because of Grace Under Pressure to saying " I'm not the center of the universe, but that doesn't matter as much as I could have sworn it did. I didn't wrap my self identity as an extreme Rush fan anymore. But still really found fun listening to them. Time Stand Still takes me back to when I was in the US Navy. We crossed the Atlantic going from Norfolk NOB to Europe/ the Mediterranean. A Med cruise. Once we finally got back to land after being at sea so long the album had dropped and all i had to do was find it. My brother wrote me from back home that Rush had a new album out because he knew I was all about Rush and that excited me. He said it was called " Hold yer fire!" As in a cease fire in a war/ battle. But oh how it was SO MUCH more! Not to be pedantic, but hold your fire of feeling and emotion. Don't let your intensity die. Dont be a watered down version of yourself.
I've been a bass player since 1982, and started playing because of Rush. I can play about 80% of their record catalog, and my wife has had to listen to it on the other side of the house when I play bass, because almost every day I play at least three long Rush songs as part of my "set list". She's NOT into Rush, and never understood why they are my favorite. 20 years into the marriage and she comes up to me and says "I listened to all of 2112 last night, and now I see why you like Rush so much. It was a great song."
Saw the Rush Counterparts tour in 1994. It was exceptionally good. They always put on a great show. Everything they produce is gold. I could listen to them all day.

I am a woman and i like rush. Tom sawyer is an awesome song. It's one of my favorites.
I took off my additional comment about my other favorite songs just not to confused people.
@@FreiherrDinkelacker She never said they were all Rush, those are simply all songs she likes. I get how it could be confusing. I find typing my thoughts directly will often lead to something that isn't as clear as it was in my mind...

Very cool. You gotta watch the whole video to get the punchline.

Aimee Mann is a phenomenal talent! I remember the band talking back in the 80’s how they “repelled” most women fans. My ATF band. Great job, Adam!!!
Thanks for watching.
Yes!! I agree. Aimee Mann is a very talented and underrated Artist and I am surprised her solo albums weren't bigger 'cause I love 'Whatever', 'I'm With Stupid', 'Lost In Space' and 'Bachelor No. 2.'
She is criminally underrated.
Female Rush fan since highschool in the late 70s.
Idk why anyone would say they have no female fans.
@@Mike80528how do you know?
@@jsarracinoHe listened.
this has been an ongoing "bit" within the band itself for decades... it's NOT a slam. They laugh about it and have for decades.
I'm a female and Rush is my favorite band of all time ever. Since 1976.
I'm female and ALLLLLLLL my female friends love Rush must be a Canadian GenX thing
Agreed...I'm 61 now, but in the early 80's just out of high school I had several female friends who rocked out to RUSH....maybe a little technical for simpletons....but we all jammed with RUSH!!!!!
I'm a GenX female (American) and also a big fan of Rush. Even have gone to see them live back in the 80s. 🤷
@@NicoleM_radiantbabyI saw Rush for thire Roll The Bones tour, and Amy was a part of this tour. Fantastic concert!
I know! He was just making a joke.
Detroit Gen X also! At least 10% of us in the audience in Detroit back in the 80s were female, and the percentage got larger as the decades went on
Female Rush fan here.
Ty

Yup.
I’m female and I’ve loved them for decades! Neil is my favorite lyricist and I love Geddy’s voice.
I'm female and I absolutely love Rush. My favorite songs are "Subdivisions" "Time Stand Still" "Limelight" Tom Sawyer" and "Early Distant Warning".
Agreed! Love those songs. Love the band. Always have. 🙋♀️
Subdivisions is my favorite.
One of my own favorites is "Anagram (for Mongo)." Honk if you know that one!
What has two thumbs and LOVES Rush? THIS GIRL!
I am female. Spirit of Radio, Closer to the Heart, Red Barchetta, and Limelight are on the all-time favorites playlist.
Very cool. You gotta watch the vid to get what i'm saying!
Closer to the Heart, my fav Rush
Limelight is one of my faves.
Time Stand Still hits harder for me now that I'm 52.
Both The Police and Rush in the same week? Thank you Professor!
I’m a woman and Rush is one of my favorite bands!!!
They probably have thousands more.
Both my kids have had the great blessing of seeing Rush in concert!
Female Rush fan here so they have one.

Same!
Rush chose Aimee Mann because they knew her voice could carry.
🥁
I see what you did there!
They want her.
But only part of the time.
My wife loves Rush and is the reason I got to see them, she was right beside me rocking just as hard as I was and there were women all around us
Rush doesn't have one bad album. I saw them in the later part of the 70s, a concert I'll never forget. Love their tunes!
I'm going to disagree; they had some duds in there. I remember reviewing "Counterparts" for a zine (remember those?) and I described it as Rush Lite.
Counterparts is definitely not bad. Actually I think overall it is very good, maybe not their best but still good.
The second half of Vapor Waves has the only tracks I ever skip...
Still love Rush, and I'm a woman of almost 70. They kick ass!!!
Female here and I love Rush!! Aimee was a perfect pick!
The first rock concert I ever went to was Rush. I was 14, freshman in high school. Got exposed to their music several years before that and have loved them ever since. Was lucky to see them in concert several more times. I know many women than love Rush as much as I do.
I'm a woman and I've been a fan of Rush forever. The song Time Stand Still was my graduating song.
How very cool!
I'm a female and went to a Rush concert in '83 with two female friends. Fantastic concert!
Holy heck! I just discovered that Aimee Mann was a member of Ministry before 'Til Tuesday was formed! I never in a million years would have guessed that.
It’s really cool, right?
I went to their 8th last show ever, in Vancouver. I swear the crowd was 1/3 women and they were right into it!! And I have many female friends who are fans!
Rush is the band that ever lived. They are the 3 Greatest , and Talented Musicians on this earth...
I ran a bar co-owned by Alex, on a trip to London my Ex and I got to go see Rush at Wembley stadium. After the show back stage my wife asked the guys “do you know what the best part of a Rush show is?” “ no lineup in the women’s washroom”’.
The Orbit Room?
Love that Rush is getting the love they deserve. Just wish Neil was still with us...

As expected, some great stuff Adam. Funny as hell. Aimee was great in this song and a female bass player that open a ton of doors....... Cheers!
Rush was a very slow burn for me. I didn't like them for years, until I listened to the song "Trees". The lyrics pulled me in and I've loved them ever since.
Very cool. Trees is a great song!
"Slow burn".... Awesome Cold Fire reference.... well done.
My anti-Rush days were fueled by their naive "Atlas Shrugged" era of supporting Ayn Rand.
Trees is great, shows why socialism fails.
No female fans? I love Rush!
@@LazyIRanch Rushies--I like it@
Rush concerts are filled with more dudes than Amon Amarth. It's a fact. But it's a great fact. Ladies are welcome and a welcome sight, but the fact the sound and lyrics Rush created simply and mainly attracts men, is like totally, organically cool.
So do I!
I know college girls in the 80s that loved Rush's music. One the most popular bands on my dorm hall too! Great video! Time Stands Still is one of my favorite songs of theirs also!
The only time I've had chill sent down my spine was the opening of Xanadu Palmer auditorium Austin, Tx September 1977.

I remember playing "Time Stand Still" and "Force Ten" when KDUP switched to AOR in the fall of 1987. As a female Canadian, I am very proud of the accomplishments of this band but, yeah, except for the single ‘Take Off’ with Bob and Doug MacKenzie, I can’t say I have been able to listen to much of their music. More’s the pity for me!
It's never too late. The musicianship of each of these legends are uncommon and they stand out.

I've been a Rush fan since I was 14, in 1978. I saw them 4 times, and each show had lots of women attending.

He grabbed his wife and put her legs up in the air. We got pulled over, and the patrolman was all, “Are you okay miss”? … Classic. First concert I ever went to

Then we lost him, I was Crushed, what a loss.
It was a great song."
it's a lovely song and it emphasizes how gentle Geddy's voice is. Til Tuesday is an awesome band.
Saw the Rush Counterparts tour in 1994. It was exceptionally good. They always put on a great show. Everything they produce is gold. I could listen to them all day.
