    The story 8 hours in is more engaging than most games I’ve played the past year since Witcher

    I will get it later on. a fresh studio who are creating a original game with ambition and passion is pretty refreshing. I think it's worth supporting studio's like this who's only obstacle keeping them from being truly great is money. This game had a small budget but looks good considering and since most issues are technical, I think it will get better down the road.

      It didn't stop them from charging $60 for it though.

    • @ЙорданЛипчев
      @ЙорданЛипчев 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Considering you have 70+ hours of content, I think $60 can be easily justified unlike "some" AAA games.

      Just send them $60 then, don't waste your time on this game. Never, in thirty years of hard gaming have I felt so robbed and insulted

    Day one patch for the PS4 version is 23 GB. This is turning into a year for 'not for everyone' games which, personally, I think is great because it means we're getting less generic crap. We need more companies to self publish so they can put out the game they want to make without worrying about keeping it mainstream or filling it with lootbox cash grabbing.

      Agreed sir!

    • @tylertheune637
      @tylertheune637 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      The 23 GB is due to the engine. Apparently with this game engine you have to redownload basically the entire game for any patching. There was a long thread on reddit with other devs chiming in

    • @diocub4022
      @diocub4022 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      well they are following the mainstream of releasing buggy games at launch so that goes against that particular logic.

    • @shift0

      This is a valuable comment.
      In the past there used to be much more of "middle-class production" games, where games were not AAA titles nor Indie. Those ended up being some of the best games of my youth, so I can only hope that type of production would make a bit of a comeback.

    Coming back a year+ some later, and even tho not many if any will see this, I'd just like to drop my quick thoughts. Story is pretty good. I like the characters and historical aspect. It's pretty cool. Index? Fucking great. Whole atmosphere feels very real. Combat has some issues but gets by. Graphics are still damn impressive for the dev size. And the first time I walked into the forest with no feckin idea what to do i absolutely loved it. Gave me a refreshed feeling of exploration. Can't wait to drop in a bunch more time.
    Currently 16 hours in. Admittedly a small but decent chunk is messing with settings to get a good framerate mixed with higher settings. Around 60-90 on a GTX 1080.

    I remember seeing this game on kickstarter raising money for the games's production. They had even set milestones for fund raising and for each completed milestone they would add a feature in the game like, better graphics, new voice actors, alternate storyline etc. The game sure has come a long way. I wish war horse studios the best.

  • @MrMayki89
    @MrMayki89 6 ปีที่แล้ว +466

    Picked up this gamę yesterday, played for about 3 hours. Even with the patch (23gb) bugs are real. I've mostly experienced glitches in ingame dialogues (characters popping out from nowhere, or getting stuck and blocking the view), also my horse wouldn't move over the fence which was knee high. Apart from that, it's great thus far. Combat is tricky and tough as hell, quests and how you can go about them is really impressive (you think you f-up and then you can Come up with new approach and make things happen anyway). Story is also cool and presented in a very intriguing way. And, The codex is Just a blast to read. No kidding, but 1 hour out of my gameplay was dedicated to Reading about peasants lives and toiltes in middle ages. I hope they will release some new patches to fix bugs, but all in all I am not dissapointed.

    • @kylecoucke943

      MrMayki89 I'm having fun with it so far. I don't even think I'm out of the tutorial yet, but I'm just running around exploring and doing side missions if I find them. I crashed literally as soon as the game started I went and grabbed the piece of cheese ur mother leaves you for breakfast 😂 but other than that I haven't had rlly any glitch issues or bugs except a camera bug while talking to an npc for a hot sec. I can agree I can tell the world is bland, so I hope something they add in the future are more random encounters. But I think people forget that even though this is open world it's primarily a game that wants to focus on the story. Which so far seems like it'll be really good. I love the combat. I haven't even fought the hard guys yet. Some weird things happen sometimes like if you pull out a torch it inequitable your shield :/. But idk. I'm really liking it. I'm gonna have to play through the game a second time and murder as many people as I can 😂 Ima be a good boy my first playthrough (although I'll probably have some slip ups with some of the more dickish Characters)

      I have done quite a bit of research on this game. Interviews, walkthroughs, exct.. With a staff of about 110 people I am expecting glitches with regular monthly patches. But as you said, I am very impressed as well. For what has gone into this game, merits allot of praise..I remember how Red Dead Redemption was at launch. Or The Division, both games got better over time. I have an Xbox One X. I am getting the game later in the week. So, it will be interesting to see what the response will be until then. But I will not be distracted by the negatives..

      Micah Scheffel I'm in the same boat. Love the game, was super hyped, but I am definitely having to trudge through the bugs. More than that, the load times. It takes about 30-45 seconds to load every time I try to talk with someone, just because the game isn't properly optimized for Xbox One.

      Hawk Strider I'd tell you that you should wait for a sale. The game has potential, but acg actually coped well with the many issues it has. Even with a decent computer (i4790 cpu and 980ti) the game at ultra runs poorly, and it's not because it has great specs, it's optimized badly, the world looks beautiful, but the character models are comparable to me andromeda, and you have limited ways to save your game, so when you encounter a bug that locks out your game and your last save point was 2 hours ago, it hurts. The game will be good, but it needs work still.

    Original Backers and myself included are just happy a bigger kickstarter game made a full release and the devs kept us in the loop during development. If anyone backed the game early enough to get alpha and beta access you'll know like I do that the final game is so much better than said alpha and beta. The game barely ran in alpha and beta lol

  • @coruviel

    It's a shame it had alot of bugs on release, but i just started playing this game a week ago and it's the best medieval RPG i have ever played in my life, the DLC's were good, combat, story, everything its amazing, the game is mostly fixed now as i only had a few bugs here and there.
    What i think would really help people get back into this game is if they either release some sort of next gen patch/update to have people look into it again, it's a really good medieval sim and it's a shame only a few people know about it.

    I want this game to be great but I hear the patch doesn't fix all the bugs. I honestly think the game could've been delayed another few months to fix the bugs but why? We're in 2018. Why not release the game, get paid and fix the bugs later?!?! Genius... just genius. I'm sure the game is great at it's core tho.

      Bugs may suck but at least nothing is game breaking. I'm not trying to defend the studio TOO much but this game in its current state could have been alot worse for the first game of a new studio... especially with a large scale like this. Compared to skyrim and fallout I'd say they are doing okay... but it could be better yes.

    • @bedoes5696
      @bedoes5696 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm 9 hours in and I can say that the core gameplay is absolutely great, although the game is very slow. Very, very slow. And the performance issues are really irritating. I didn't see any major bugs though. It's still an enjoyable experience, but I am looking forward to upcoming patches.

    As a sound tech whose done his fair share of foley work and tv movie editing: the voices were not mixed properly. You hit the nail on the head. You can tell the voices were layered over the actual 'sounds'. It wasnt mixed together with, for example, a 'room noise' track (sorry for vocabulary issues, Im french)

    • @KIager
      @KIager 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's also an issue where the background layer moves along with the camera cuts.
      It might be a bug or an oversight, but it affects all cut scenes and dialogue, apart from the pre-rendered ones.
      Ambient dialogue is actually pretty great, when you walk past two people speaking for example, so hopefully they can fix this with a patch in the future.

      Big open world rpgs are just more difficult to make bug-free due to their size and depth, as the more you put in a game the more that can go wrong, so I don't fault the devs so much in that regard. A lot of Kingdom Come's problems seem like they go beyond just bugginess, though. Like, there's bugs and then there's just poor optimization, inherent clunkiness, and bad design/game mechanics, which seems to be some of the problems with this title.

    • @Jorendo
      @Jorendo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That being said, there is a huge split in the user base. There are those who suffer sadly from bugs and glitches, and there are those like me who haven't enounctered any name worthy bugs (i encountered maybe 2 small bugs so far) and have a solid smooth experience with over 30+ hours into the game. No idea why this is happening. I run the game on high settings with a gtx 970 card while using a ultra wide screen, still having a solid 40 FPS in cities and 50 FPS outside of cities. I mentioned the ultra wide screen as that one always costs me about 10 - 20 frames per second when i play on that resolution. Real shame not everyone get's to experience a smooth game cause it's one of the most amazing games i have played in a long time. Really getting sucked into it, but then again i am a sucker for history.

    Karak, man! For some time now I've compared your reviews to the big review channels. Using your own words, because "they're not 2 minutes long or sponsored bullcrap". Now, I'm sad to say, a lot of the smaller, unique and fan-supported channels have started to show they just need to throw mediocre reviews out and that's it. You mentioned this game has a long tutorial. And I know for sure that many of said channels made their "reviews" based only on the intro area. Lots of these dudes just write a couple of jokes and then yell their 4 minute reviews based on their 6 hour experiences. Just wanted to mention this, man. You do an awesome work. The writing, the humor, the delivering and of course, the fucking review!... are all really professional. Congratulations and here's to your channel's growth. A lot of people are watching and I see a lot of comments saying: "ACG mentioned this and that info in his review. Better go there" and it is great. Bye.

    I think that game director Dan Vávra had too much freedom while developing this game. He just thrown all of his ideas and there was nobody to tell him that some of them are not that good. In many instances they crossed the line between more realistic and annoying (save system, every f*cking thing has to be a mini game, flower picking time consuming animations etc)

    • @BinkoBunko
      @BinkoBunko 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      To me it seems they failed the check of “even though it’s realistic, is it fun?”

      Helios Sphere dark souls doesn't have saving because it doesn't need it, you idiot. When you die, you respawn. It won't force you to lose hours of progress because of random oneshots or bugs, unlike this nonsense. Think before you talk.

    • @Myrth1
      @Myrth1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember certain rewiever (sadly, in Polish, so I wont' post him) pointing out it quickly becomes apparent why everything has this lenghty animation to perform. He noticed (and I've got that myself, since I played this game blindly and then only went to check reviews, being late to the show and all) that after playing the game for 12 hours, about third of that time was spend on different animations. Not just minigames. Animations, like sleeping, picking items, getting on horseback, loading screens when eating or washing yourself, dialogue each time you haggle and so on and forth. And his conclusion was simple:
      It exists to claim the game has "100 hours of gameplay". And it can;'t even do that right, since I beat it in 40 once I realised how the inner workings are done for a lot of mechanics and how a lot of things are superflous.
      Speaking of throwing ideas without any reason or sense, I'm still confused with the drinking skill. What was even the whole point of it? It felt so unnecessary. Just like the entire alchemy skill, minigame and potions (night vision, lol), mostly giving the impression they just wanted to get some of Witcher bits, despite not fitting rest of the game at all.
      And then there is this awkward split between obsessive """""realism""""" on one hand and oversimplified game mechanics on the other. So my food spoils and I have to eat, but then there are those magical pots full of renewable stew literally everywhere, so I can't starve unless I actively stop eating at all? So I need to sleep, but literally any bed and shack will do, at any time? Oh, I have a limited carry weight, but I can still carry 10 times over the limit if I don't mind slowly walking? My horse has limited carry weight, but I can overpack myself and the horse will carry me and my half a tonne of gear? My horse can teleport! And something that instantly broken the illusion of any "realism" for me was the torches, right during first night time. When I noticed those, the gig was essentially over. So food spoils, but once you get your first torch, it will never run out. Ever. Just have it inefinitely. Which renders 2nd and any other torch after that a god-damn vendor trash, in a game that has different perish rates for different types of food.
      What's even the point of claiming focus on realism, if the very mechanics that on surface level support it are just unrealistic as in any other game?

    I think my biggest problem with this game is how it doesn’t respect you as the player. The save system, not skippable cutscenes, and terribly long tutorial makes playing this game an event. I can’t sit down after classes and play for an hour because I may not find a save point, I have to dedicate a large chunk of time to hope I found somewhere I can save at.

    A different perspective - there are technical issues, sometimes a hillarious glitch can occur, but nothing dramatic. The game is actually quite stable for a freshly launched complex open-world RPG. Some reviewers (not ACG but others) are trying to make it sound like it's a buggy mess. That's nonsense. It's no more a buggy mess than Witcher 3 was on launch (watch the bug compilations for that one). In a month or two most of the problems should be ironed out. So saying "wait for a deep deep sale" is a bit too harsh, especially if the reviewer actually liked the game. "Yes, wait a bit for patches if you want, but the game is already eminently playable" would be my take.

    • @bbdawise
      @bbdawise 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A game that requires a 20+gbs day one patch isn't a buggy mess? Sorry, but your argument doesn't hold up to even a moment's scrutiny.

      I understand the mechanics of this "Buy, Wait for Sale, Rent, Never Touch?" series and why it has to come out at release day (inform players, get youtube views). But for these kind of games (big RPG's that almost always are buggy at release) a "Buy, Wait for Sale, Rent, Never Touch?" review after one or two months would be better. So an option "Look for a review after the first few big patches" and make that review would be nice.
      At the current state Karak's verdict is probably correct (haven't played myself yet), but for me a verdict after the first few (big) patches would be more useful. If it still has the same problems in a few months "wait for a deep deep sale" is the final verdict for this game. But if a lot of the problems are solved "buy if you like a realistic RPG" could be the final verdict. This is not meant as criticism on this review, I liked it and gave a thumbs up. It is more a wish, just as I wish big RPG's are not so buggy at release :)

    Remember once you get a game cd with its manual at hand and the nice shining case and no bugs at all?now with internet and digital copies almost all devs seem to get lazy enough not to make sure their game hasnt got any bugs on the release day.Patches even if they succeed to fix a game's issues,they fail by default and definition to make up for a player's first impression and precious first experience of a game that makes it enjoyable and memorable.this is why i love cd project devs of witcher 3 and now the long anticipated game cyberpunk 2077.their response on when the release date is gonna be,they simply state ''when its done''.pure gold.ty for the good review.that was fast Karak.

  • @placksheep
    @placksheep 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think your critique was fair - I however have been enjoying the story so much that the technical issues haven't been a significant factor for me. That being said, I had to search forums for a fix because the performance was so bad as to be unplayable. It turned out to be a memory allocation issue addressed with a 'launch command' in steam.
    I think it's great, but I'd recommend waiting unless you're out of games to play. Oh, and if you don't have a GTX 970 (or equivalent) on PC don't bother. This thing will wreck your PC.

      Mike Hunt I don't blame him. He wants to know what he'd be getting himself into and decide whether the game interests him enough to pay $60 for. And trust me, getting a disappointing game at such a price is not pleasing when that money could have been spent on better/more important things. Yes, it's good to have an independent mind. However, many times it's best to first hear what others think and know what kind of issues that may be faced.

      I like the game for the very same reason why you do (not to mention having all my friends in medieval reconstruction movement and living a stone-throw away from Czech border, so I'm pretty familiar with the history used as a background for the game), BUT the bugs really, really, REALLY put a damper on things. And once I figured out how the combat system works, it stopped being engaging. Instead, it was a deja vu from Ass Creed 1, where combat boiled down to "parry, counter-attack, instant-kill".
      But seriously, the buggyness of certain quests and obvious lack of care or polish toward another leaves a very bitter taste.
      And I've played the game almost half a year after release, few major patched later.

    Im going to say one thing, I havent been this in love with a game since the witcher 3. For a smaller studio the state in which the game released is at least on par with bigger studios and its a work of passion from these developers so they will work on it. The game world is beautiful and immersive the characters are well fleshed out and Henry is an exceptionally relateable protagonist for anyone in there 20's-30's. Id say support the hell out of this game because it is a breath of fresh air from an industry that is trying to make you pay for air with micro transactions and loot boxes and I hope warhorse go on to create more and dont fall into the same routine that other game companies have started to normalise.

    Any funny exploit is in the Kunesh's tool quest.
    When you knock him out, take his loot and open his container to grab his stuff.Then immediately go to sword practice and wait when you have a sword.Then stand behind kunesh when the tutorial asks you do chain attack the trainer and you whack him instead and basically make the lock on assign to him.
    Because the wooden sword does no damage, you can train swordplay and str this way by wailing on kunesh instead of the trainer.

    Looking at the comments, I can understand why some people may wait, bugs are a concern and waiting for patches can be frustrating. A few others are missing the point of this game: it is not a high fantasy, never was presented as such, never meant to be. It is a historical rpg. For those comparing it to Witcher 3, you do remember the first game, right? I want to support smaller developers, and the lack of dragons does not bother me, so I purchased it earlier today. So far I'm enjoying it, really drawn in by the story. As a woman yes I'd love to play as a female, but it's not that type of world.

    Feels like the first Witcher in a way with its quality submerged beneath a mountain of Euro-Jank. Hopefully this franchise takes a similar path to Witcher because I love the concept and there seems to be so much potential in it.

      History's Dustbin But the difference is the Witcher, even with its engine limitations and copy paste NPCs had great atmosphere and an engaging story that made me look past its shitty combat system. This game 's story is mediocre at best.

      Fishing Grapes Mrw I hear 'witcher 3' has a more engaging story than KC:D... I guess it's true, the markets for these games are somewhat distinct. (When I think of the witcher story, I think: 1-part LOTR, 1-part Dora the Explorer, 1 part teen slasher movie with gaudy sex scenes)

    i was already expecting it to have poor performance so im sticking around assasin's creed origins until it gets patched and they roll a couple of mods for it on the nexus, but i personally believe that this game will have a great modding community that will make it become more successful in the future.

    The world map size isn't as big as some others, but it feels more real than any other, it takes REAL time to travel from point A to point B...
    P.S. One of the most necessary mods for this game should be a Population Density mod, adding travelers, bandits, wayfarers, all the likes to the open world.

    Yeah I am fully enjoying this game. Great tip: After the first 4-5 main quests you get after the intro, your Weapon Training place locks up, where you can safely combat train with wooden weapons. You can also train with real weapons! I sat 2 hours and trained up Henry... I gained 3 levels and a load of perks for the MANY weapon options available.

    A lot of times you can wait, not only do you get the game on sale in a few months but you will get the patches that fix a lot of the day one issues. So best of both worlds if you can be patient and with a single player game like this there is no reason to rush out for it

  • @Blindman875

    I backed the game more than a year ago and I'm glad I did. Yes, there are bugs. But, the visuals and atmosphere, for me, more than make up for it. I've never been more emmerced in a story and felt like I made a difference as I've had with this game. I've never walked through a town in other games, I'd just run to the next objective. Fast travel? Why bother? You can gain horsemanship and see awesome settings by riding there yourself, it's worth it. I'm impressed that such a small company with few employees gave us a game the is 98% AAA quality for less than 5% of the cost to develop a normal AAA game. My only problem is they should have charge 40-50$ and not the AAA 60$ price mark.

    I feel like a ghost while walking around town. It's hard not to notice how none of the NPC's will ever look at you. Even when you're jumping up and down 6 inches from their faces. They just stare right through you. That's the number one issue that I've been having right from the start. It's really putting me off.
    And just what is with the incessant head bobbing when NPC's start talking? I looks so unusual. Kinda makes me nauseous.

  • @Stevey2578
    @Stevey2578 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My problem with any games claims of "history accuracy" and "realism" is that there will always be certain artistic liberties taken to ensure a fun gameplay. So healing potions is historically accurate? Not getting infection from fights and not dying from bad water realistic? Bohemia peolple having british, american, and australian accents historically accurate and realistic? (To be fair it may have a language setting to fix it a la Witcher 3)
    See what I'm saying. It's never gonna be a 100% thing but it's not a big issue either. Illusion of immersion is the key.
    edit: The archery combat mechanic is a masterpiece tho.

    I was excited, but now I think I am at the point where I prefer crazy stuff like magic and dragons in my medieval RPGs. IMO I think that having a realistic and interesting setting like the one in Kingdom Come works better coupled with a fantasy story or fantasy elements. Witcher 3, for example, has a similar world to Kingdom Come, but you fight dragons and vampires and are a badass monster hunter. It just feels like the game is missing something, and it's a shame because I was really interested initially.

    • @Patrovisch

      Having the same problem with this game, no fantasy makes these kinda games boring and not exciting at all.. It only works for strategy games but not for first person open world.
      The open world looks boring as hell and there is no danger walking in the woods or going out at night...

    • @Japonaattori
      @Japonaattori 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good review. Thanks for taking the time.
    I found I have a love/hate with Kingdom Come and that struggle is endearing it to me. I found once I trained in Rattay I really started liking the game, a more elaborate explanation of the combat mechanic was introduced and doing it a few times (actual practice, not videogame practice, where you do it once and the npc ushers you forward with some banal banter, "you're a natural, go there next.") I feel I started to understand it and that broke my initial frustration with the game.
    There were more then a few times I said aloud, "What the fuck is this shit? Why would you do this?!" I Kept at it (practiced with the Miller; lockpicking, pickpocketing) and found my stride ... I avoid horses, big rocks and creeks/gulleys as they have proven to be everest for my main dude Nate.
