Great video, alot of helpful information. I have had a psud. Breeding Demasoni colony in my 55 gallon for years, I think the most beneficial piece of advice you can take away from this is not male to female ratio. It is making sure you have enough hiding spots for all the fish. I started with 12 fish and am currently at around 25. I have around 50 nooks for these fish to hide/escape and have had no problems.
Keep up the good posts mate!
Thanks glad you liked it.
I am cameraman and editor. The reporter is my friend and colleague Tom Heap
Apologies again for being an arse before.
I want to know what's the best for this fishes
bolly, your channel is the go to, for any questions i have about my future cichlid setup. thank you
Hey mate,
Just recently got into the hobby after I got given a pair (male female) of hongi cichlids. Thanks for the advice. Keep it up!
I love my Demasoni. I only have seven right now, but I only have a 20gal tank. I'll be upgrading to a forty in about a month. Most of them are ~1.5", I have 2 2.5" ones, and the big guy is probably 3-3.5". I am kind of a newbie to cichlids and picked the big one up maybe 9 months ago (he was tiny back then). Then two more (then they fought). Now very little fighting. Can't wait to up size. These guys have been a pain to learn to keep but I love the personality
Love how everyone is sharing info on this species in the comments! Love it!!!
Completely agree, number and ratio of male to female is the key. Im keeping 3 males to 7 or 8 felmales. Lots of male fighting in the early days when they where growing up until i started removing excess males (started off with 15+)
Mark it was a joke mate ;-) Jesus !!! Mark your both having banter with each other, and I was just having a laugh sorry mate ;-( yet on a serious note, you both give great information on the subject of African Cichlids...MAY IT LONG CONTINUE MATE ;-) And your videos are by far the best on the WORLD WIDE WEB TRUTHFULLY...And it's you who has given me the knowledge too start keeping these Beautiful fish ;-) And for that,I congratulate you ;-)
As Marc says a pH of 7.8 will be fine for most malawis if kept stable.
Just every now and then check your tap water to make sure it does not drop below 7.5.
sodium bicarbonate is fine, I used to use Seachems rift lake buffer and lake salt for pH and gh but strongly decided that they were doing the same job as bicarb and epsom salt, the only difference being fancy packaging / elaborate description.
I know in the USA sodium bicarbonate can be called baking soda but make sure it does not contain any other additives as in the UK we can get both bicarb and baking powder, the baking powder contains caking agents which we DO NOT WANT in the tank.
in my early days i put one of these in a lightly stocked Tanganyika tank!!!! yeah that was not one of my best moments in my rift valley cichlid career! :-/
Cheers, Chad. Best of luck with the tank buddy
Just know years later I’m watching your video and learning something
I've just got 4 of these fish, love em, along with all my Mbuna, they have great individual personalities!
Thanks for all the knowledge you are sharing on your channel. And once again a great video n very helpful information.
I am currently keeping around 23 demasonis ranging from 1.25 inch to 2 inch's. One has died a week ago and another one looks kinda sick (not eating & hanging around at just one place, this fish is 2 inch in size and the biggest one in the group).
I am afraid I might lose all of them one by one, can you please advise what is that I am doing wrong and how can improve it. I will also post a video of my tank.
I have 125 gallon tank with fairly good hiding places, and the tank mates are:
10 lab (9 of them are around 1.25 to 2.5 inch's, and 1 is 4 inch's) all very peaceful
4 hongi (2 inch's)
4 red zebra (1.25 inch's)
2 peacocks (2 inch's)
1 auratus female (2.5 inch's)
23 demansoni (1.25 to 2 inch's)
Can you please help me save my demasonis??
Thanks so much for your help.
1st to like and comment :P :D
Very informative as usual. Keep up the good job mate.
@locomotiv63 Hi I received the video response thank you. Is that you reporting then? Or are you behind the camera? Very well put together video and an interesting watch!
YIKES!!! You need at least a dozen. 20+ would be best.
Jesus Mark & Danny sort yeah heads out ? You both give great information,us avid fans just want both your experiencees and know how to help us achieve are goals in keeping the beautiful yet very aggressive cichlids...And I'm for one who would rather have both your inputs, than just ones ???
Your decor is spot on imo, Yes reducing the amount of males should help with the aggression problems.
malawi bloat prolly from the stress of moving or somethings off in ur tank. One thing I do when I notice they are not eating is separate them and feed kensfish food called Ken's Premium Metronidazole Garlic Flake on web. It has the medication baked right in the food and it has garlic which no fish can deny if caught the day of (when noticing its not taking food) after that add Epsom salt to the tank to get the fish to expel whatever is in the digestive system it will come out white and stringy
So just adding one demasoni will make it extremly aggressive then? I only want one for my 110 gallon, Im not looking to breed or anything, Im looking to get a demasoni and a chailosi. and they will be slightly smaller than the rest in my aquarium, Look at my video and tell me
Dude your videos have a lot of useful stuff for us hobbyists but your production technique leaves room for improvement. Without wanting to sound patronising, may I make a couple of suggestions?
really useful info again! I've got 6 on order, I need to now let my provider know about the female to male ratio !
Nice video as always, keep it up. Thanks.
Same for millions of deaf people. They don't offer CC and the free one from TH-cam doesn't understand that person either.
Great Video mate.
I have a wave maker does it need to be pointing towards the surface to create surface movement or have it under the water and pointing in a straight line ? I have coral sand and have lava rock please reply cheers
I´ll get 10 Demasonis this Sunday, so as far as now I have 10 Labidochromis Caeruleus and 10 Demasonis, 20 fishes in 300 liters you think I am done or I can add another type of mbuna to make it more colorful?
Keep up the great videos!
Brilliant!
Thanks for the support
Bolly you're a helpful person to us new to cichlids thanks to you and churchhealzimpact I have been learning a lot and feeling confident for when I set up mine in July keep up the videos
mark do you use aquarium salt & epsom salts in your tank mate ??? because im cycling my tank,and just wanted to know your thoughts on it please...Also my PH is a steady 7.8,would you use baking soda to up the PH to say lower 8,s...great vids as always cheers mate... :}
Get a decent clip on lapel mic. This makes a huge difference.
Get some simple editing software like imovie and cut your voice track down so your not thinking out loud then cover the joins by filming shots of what your talking about and laying them over the edited voice. They're called cut aways. That way your productions will have a much slicker, more pacey feel and will be more engaging for your viewers.
Keep up the good work!
I just bought two of these little guys the other day added them with my 2 two inch green terrors the terrors chased them for 5 minutes now they are one big fam.
prolly too small a tank I have the same thing but in my 100 gallon aquarium with absolutely no problems, I bought him very young though so it can learn as it grows, these are very smart fish remember
Should you remove fry from the parents as soon as you notice them
How I kept demasoni in my 110 gallon without problems? JUST GET 1 and buy it when its young. I saw one on a group of assorted cichlid species and decided to buy it because all I wanted is one, I dont have room for 20. Hes smaller then all the rest of the other cichlids. When he first went in he immediately started fighting with my alto compressiceps and learned quick. As it is getting older its becoming more chilled out, maybe because I bought it young it has had time to learn or its the fish
Danny do you use Epsom salts & aquarium salt mate ? Because I'm cycling my tank and wanted your opinion on the matter please mate ? By the way, where are you ? A Scouser here mate ;-)
Always love your vid 👍🏼
Where can I buy demansoni for Hertfordshire area please?
Is there any high quality pellet food that would be good for these fish? Being herbivores I’m honestly stumped on that.
Sorry didn't mean to sound patronising and my comments may have been a little ale assisted. Yes you do do a good job. In answer to your question I have tried to post a link to my one fish related effort but can't seem to make work. Not so clever now am I?
Please help every time I add demasoni to my tank my fish start to die my tank has about 15 Malawi fish average from 15cm to 2 cm the demasoni that I just added is about 2 cm in length his really aggressive should I remove him or what.
Hi mate, cheers.
By the looks of it you have loads of males, I'm pretty good at spotting male Demasoni by personality and their darker colouration.
Hi there, I want to start with mbuna in a 240 liter tank. Can you tell me what to put in there to start with? I like the yellow and the zebra ones.
Thanks
Can not have these in a 120 litre tank I have a fluval 206 filter have sun sun wave maker substrate I have black tithain moon sand have volcano rock I’m using coral sand in my filter as a filteration to harden my water looking at keeping these in the future please reply back to me thanks a lot 👍🏻
I have a ??? that I hope you can answer regarding these fish. We purchased 2 approx 2-3 months ago, together, close to the same size. One was SLIGHTLY bigger than the other at the time. NOW, the one that was slightly bigger is about 2x the size of the other. The larger one IS more feisty, however, the smaller one can hold her own too (They became He & She when one got so much larger than the other). They're both people friendly, however the small one is such a lil doll. Why such a size diff? TIA
@Orinous1 Hi, unfortunatly duaster struck on my 70L tank. Not so long ago the tank a had a flow leak through the night will resulted in me losing 90% of live stock. I was that gutted about it all I've decided to have a break from marines for a bit until I get some money together to set up a high tech tank. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Good info mate can you check my newly set up demasoni tank and give me some advice as to why im having some die ??
how would you recommend increasing flow @ that part of tank?? wavemaker, powerhead, ?? take alook @my videos interested in solving this problem.. thanks-
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi
How can I find you on Facebook?
Kind regards,
Tommy
Now Mark how can I get a African Cichlid Hub t-shirt mate ;-) black large please,I don't use Facebook sorry so help me out please ??? Cheers
I've been using it for the last couple of months because my tap water chemistry has changed slightly. Baking soda can be used but I would use trade marked product. You should be ok with 7.8 plus it's steady
Great vid. I was wondering if I could possibly get some advice. I currently have a mating pair of Convict Cichlids in a 75 gallon. Everywhere i read says that the pair will likely kill anything I put in there with them. And I'd really hate to waste a 75 gallon on 2 fish. I've been doing research on different types if cichlids and just about everywhere i look, it says that i can only fit a few fish in the 75 gallon. But then I come to youtube and see videos like yours. You're clearly educated on this topic and you're keeping many cichlids in what looks to be a 75 gallon. Am I being misinformed by the things I'm reading on the internet? I'd really like to make a beautiful and active cichlid aquarium. But I don't want to have the fish suffer if they don't have enough space. I understand cleanliness can be a problem when putting many fish in a tank, but I have a very powerful canister filter and I plan on doing water changes every 2 weeks. More if necessary. Do you have any recommendations as to what types of cichlids I can put together in a 75 gallon? I currently have a 27 gallon tank that has their fry in it. I was told to take the parents out because they'd either get sick or they'd kill them all. So that's why I put them in the 75 gallon. Do you think it's best that I put the pair back in with their babies and just start from scratch in the 75 gallon?
+Marshall Eriksen If I were you i would get a smaller tank just for the convicts because they WILL kill other chiclids that are in there
+Marshall Eriksen I don't have Convicts but I do have 50 Cichlids in my 150 Gallon Tank and I have ALL varieties.. Only 1 trouble maker in the tank, a red zebra.. she is one of the smallest in my tank and most definitely is the boss. Secret is, I got all 50 fish within 2 weeks of each other.. All babies, so they grew up together and that is why they don't fight.
Question is how many you got, tank size, which type you feed them etc. Need more info to help you.
this fish is why I no longer keep Mbuna. I started with 1 male and 5 females. They grew into a colony of about 25 fish. I relocated them from a 35g into a 65g tank. The population spiked at 50, and then one male fish proceed to kill every other one in the tank until he was alone. Then being to scared to leave the rock work, he starved himself to death. I have no kept Mbuna since 2004 bc of this.
Hi, great video perfect info ! I have a 45 gallon with 4 electric yellow. I was planning on putting in 1 demasoni and 1 female kenyi...is this possible ? I heard that 1 demasoni by himself will do no harm because he is only aggressive to is own kind...
Have you got much flow in that part of the tank?
I had a full grown male in with other mbuna and he doesn't bother a thing at all! Don't get me wrong he was the dominant male but was more like a referee to the other fish so I threw in 8 more juvenile demasoni to see how it would work, the little ones fight with themselves but the full grown one just acts like they're not even there. Guess I got lucky to get a fish with his own peaceful personality
Will they be ok in a 125l?
LILSAF absolutely. They can be kept in a 55 and up.
Great Vid Thank You very much....
What fish can I add with my 9
I have had several demassi and mbuna. They are aggressive yes but when they are in a tank with other cichlids they dig up the stones in the tank to hide and under rock features. The last one I had dug so much that he stressed himself to the point of killing himself. Needless to say I think that is the last one I will purchase. They are a beautiful fish though.
Can these be kept with Saulosi?
Can i have a demasoni in a 16 galons aqarium with angelfis and barbs ???
Do female mbunas prefer males bigger than themselves or will a large female breed with a smaller male ? Thanks
why do your fishes dont fight each other ?
im having problems i have juvenile in tank and they chase each other around tank i have 12 fishes in tank at moment i have the same size tank as you. plus i got a bully in tank i have malawi fishes in tank
Hey, I'm always up for some tips. Considering I only use an iPhone 4 to make my videos I think I do a good job. I use Sony Vegas Pro 10 amongst some other programs (My problem is I don't have hrs to edit and render most of my video are recorded/edited/rendered and uploaded in the same day) I'm looking to upgrade my equipment in the near future. Have you got any videos? Website showing your work.. You know the saying "Proof is in the pudding" Thank you for watching
african cichlids. love em. good info
So I Have My 55 Gallon Cichlid Tank List Complete... Red Zebra, Afro Jalo Reef, Yellow Acei, Electric Yellow, white top afra hofa, Taiwan reef, demasoni, maingano, and 2 Clown Loaches...Will This Be Safe?
I am starting a 125 G tank dedicated to just Demasonis. I am having a heck of a time trying to find wild Demasonis or F1s for that matter. I've seen terrible quality Demasonis on the market where the coloration is faded and I am trying to avoid starting a colony with low quality fish. I've reached out to well known fish suppliers in the States but when I ask them about the quality of their Demasonis they don't sound very reassuring. Please help. Any suggestions or connections you have would be very very very appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Tom,
Thought you knew that I had to down size on tanks a few month's back. The Trop tank is no more sorry buddy. How's things?
@Will93bn Thanks for watching Will. Whereabouts in Oz you from? I'm an ex Queenslander.
Pseodotropheus damsoni and sp. Elongatus ornatus looks very similar, how do you distinguish those two?
What is ur best selling cichlid
Good and informative video! I was wandering if you could recommend putting a pair of Julidochromis in with 12 Demasoni in a 180 liter tank? I've read somewhere, that they just might get along, but what do you think?
+JoeLeer I have 2 Demasoni, even though they say they should be in a large colony. I have 50 fish and all different. I bought 2 of each fish, Haps, peacocks, Mbuna. They get along great. The boss is darn near the smallest fish in the tank, a red zebra. LOL
Hey dude, I want watch your vids but you need to stop waffling.
Please practice getting to the point in future, so I don't poke my eyes out with a fork just trying to get a bit of info.
UK liters? I didn't know that in UK you have your own metric system lol
Fantastic video, thanks for the info! :).
so you not doing your marine tank now?
i was told that there is a black line going through the males eyes. i have been going based on that and so far so good. Is this true tho?
I'm starting to develop some brown alge on the bottom part of my 155 gallon mixed cichlid tank.. Ant suggestions on what the problem is?
I've got an 180L tank, I've been on forums and have seen that you can only keep 5-7 in a tank that size.. Is it essential to keep males and females? Seeing as I don't want to have to deal with more overcrowding? Just bought a 2nd hand juwel vision 180, came with like 3 spare heaters, 2 other heaters and a bunch of other gear which was a steal at 200.. Would love to keep cichlids but afraid that my tank size might be too small. Any advice would be really appreciated x
I am so sad , My Demasoni is loosing color and skin out of nowhere , i did a water change and added warmer water , i am hoping you have any advice on helpping my demasoni :(
thank u !
Hi ! I have 7 demasoni in my tank they fight why ?
@locomotiv63 Ah brilliant, free lance? No need to be sorry I knew you was offering advice and had good intentions. I've realised now that I'm getting more subscribers and views I really need to start working on my production value. Feel free to message me.
Hi just wondering what size tank that is?
Hi there. Thanks for the great info, and good video. I wondered if you would message me the name of the guy who was the authority on cichlids? I couldn't make it out from the vid. Thanks.
The name you seek is Ad Konings. You can look him up via google.
Hi, new subscriber here! Just setting up my first cichlids tank with coral sand and ocean rock. The tank is 300litres, I have 1 fluval 405 external filter, do you think that is enough filtration?? Thanks!!!
i brought my demonsi i had only one which died in couple of weeks why is that, first he was eating normally, but den next 3 days he didn't eat, and he died, please help me on this
Hi Dean :) More of a whiskey man myself lol
Your tank size please
Terimakasih,, salam dari indonesia
Thank you pal
Would I be able to have 4 or 5 of them if I had lots of other Africans in the tank ( like would it spread aggression )?
Will two kennyai cichlids breed that are differently colored? I have a darker male and a very light blue female(i believe its a female
Not necessarily, i've had them kill firemouths and lwanda. They are not to be trusted blindly. They should be fine with mbuna larger than themselves. Use size to offset aggression, for example, make sure the more peaceful fish are bigger. The more peaceful a fish is, the bigger it should be. This formula has worked well for me in the past.
you didn't say what they eat. I read they're vegetarians. is that true? I came stop them from getting boat and dying every time I try them :/
+mark nabia I don't have a problem with that. I just can't keep the damn things alive. I recently just got 5 and they've been alive two weeks so it's looking good so far.... I'm gonna go get more sometime this week
+Bryan Clark I feed mine Spirulina 20 flakes and they go crazy over them. I have a 150 Gallon Tank with 50 Different Cichlids. Haps, Peacocks and Mbuna. I have 2 of each fish I have... I have had great luck with mine. They don't fight, they don't dwell in the rocks.. they swim all over. I do keep my tank really clean though. They are growing faster then I thought they would being Dwarf Cichlids and all..
PEACOCKS AND HAPs ARE NOT dwarf cichlids
my psudotropheus elongotus ate my tiger barbs...
Umm Ive had demasonis for a long time. Currently have a breeding pair in my main tank. They eat just like any other cichlid.. Brine shrimp, protein pellets, veggie pellets.. Pretty easy and hardy fish. On my third or fourth breed with this pair.
If you have a large mbuna soup with 60 fish in 400 liters, the male-female ratio really doesn't matter.
nice! Im from sydney
