  • Today's video is a care guide and species spotlight on the Pseudotropheus demasoni. The Demasoni cichlid is a dwarf species of mbuna that is known to be very aggressive, especially to it's own kind. This can make it tricky to care for and keep, but with a few simple tank setup considerations, they can be an awesome choice for any fishkeeper.
Demasoni are Mbuna cichlids are from Lake Malawi, and they prefer plenty of rockwork to swim in and around. They would eat/destroy any live plants, so that's why it's purely a rock scape here. They are extremely active cichlids, and they can be aggressive. Stocking mbuna in high numbers is one strategy to mitigating aggression with this species. For the Demasoni, stocking them in groups will help mitigate aggression, as will having a higher ration of females to males.

I have in my aquarium two Tropheus duboisi, two Red Zebra Pseudotropheus, two Pseudotropheus demasoni, two Labidochromis species yellow, two Melanochromis johanni, two Ancistrus spec., one albino Labeo frenatus, one Rainbow Shark Epalzeorhynchus frenatus, one Hoplosternum thoracathum, and one Albino Corydoras aeneus. One of the Labidochromis species yellow is the most aggressive, even towards the two Pseudotropheus demasoni. The two Pseudotropheus demasoni are very peaceful. I have a 180-liter aquarium.

I have two Demasoni but I don't find them that aggressive. My most aggressive is the Pseudotropheus socolofi. Also what are your guys thoughts on the Electric Blue Jack Dempsey? Just to clarify, not to be kept with African cichlids.

I’ve had these guys and I’ve never had much issue. Although I’ve never kept them in smaller than a 150 so that could be a factor

How many mbuna do you recommend for a 60 gallon?? Owner of a fish store said I should have at least 60 before they’re grown… I have 22 total 4 of them are demasoni. Is he right or is he just trying to sale me 38 fish lol😅?
