    I don't usually delve as deeply into the historical accuracy of a reproduction as I did here, but a detail on the scabbard prompted me to take a closer look. This sword shows respectable quality in some regards and seems fine in and of itself if you're not familiar with other Roman gladii, but I've found some issues, as you'll see in the video.

      I thought the review was great. He tells it as it is. The issue with weight not being correct is important. Personally I would have liked the blade to be a bit shorter from looking at it which would cut down the weight along with a shorter handle. The grip could of been a little bit more round. I can't imagine holding a square piece of wood being comfortable.

    The handle seems to be to long for a thrust oriented gladius. Similary to much later viking sword the hand should be fixed firmly between the pommel and the guard with its fingers resting on the ridges of the handle itself in order to facilitate a firm grip needed for a thrust and a cut. Otherwise you can harm your wrist.

    This is gunna come as no surprise to anyone but I have the same handling issue with my cold steel gladius machete. I'm a kali practitioner and I sometimes train with a bat to get good at handling the weight. Plus, it's a machete so I was more worried the thing would have almost no heft and be flimsy.
    Rather, when I picked it up it felt closer to a bat than I thought. It's not HEAVY per se, and it's maybe about 1/10th of an inch thick. Point of balance is, like 4 or 5 inches from the gaurd. But, yea it handles more like a chopper and is less nimble at the point than I imagined a gladius would be. For a tool that happens to be pointy, it's decent. I don't think I'd want to fence with it, I find myself wanting to use my whole body to keep it in motion or to use it two handed.

    The weight is something that might be worth contacting Dynasty Forge about. There is always some tolerance in weight because every sword is unique, but almost doubled weight compared to the website is unacceptable. Makes me wonder if they sent a very bad factory lemon, or if they changed something in the design (heavier wood or steel?) that renders the website outdated.

    I'm not personally keen on black leather for scabbards (or sword handles). I used to do re-enactment where black was a BIG no-no due to 'historical accuracy', but I knew someone who had accidentally dyed/stained a scabbard by leaving an iron spearhead laying on it - and someone else who told me, from personal experience, that bleeding on leather (also accidentally) is a sure-fire way to stain it black.

    The scabbard really looks like a regular "medieval" style scabbard that they just put the brass furniture on to make it look fancy. Also, once you pointed out the rectagular shape of the grip, it really ruined the "at least it's good looking," excuse for me. The shape of the grip makes it look cheap and clumsily made to me even considering all the decorative metal fittings. My brain says, "that's not what a sword grip looks like!" Might make a good prop except it's too sharp for that.
    I'm really enjoying Skall getting back into regular sword reviews.

    As an Infantryman myself, I can completely understand why Romans would desire a light blade. When I was in basic and we started marching around with a rifle, I hate that damned thing because it's weight, along with the rest if my equipment, wore me down so damned much after 10 miles. The sling would tire out my back and shoulders after a while, even though my rifle didn't weigh much at all.

  • @PJDAltamirus0425
    @PJDAltamirus0425 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, removing the fancy brass, shortening the handle and shortening the tip would cut down on weight a little , increase durability and lower the price. The scabbard is binged out already. The sword doesn't need to be pimped. Then round off the hilt and make it less glossy.

    Is ballistic gell harder to stab and cut than a live body? It seems like bodies are wetter and that would facilitate penetration.

  • @jacobnewell4633
    @jacobnewell4633 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the problem with ballistics gel when testing swords is that while the tensile strength is similar to the human body the material that it is made of sticks to the blade way more than real flesh. I'm certain that if he were to stab a pig carcass for example the gladius would have went right through instead of only penetrating a few inches. The wider the sword the more surface area and the more force that it requires to penetrate deeply.

    @6:00 "...you literally could not fit it any more tidy than this" - You TOTALLY _CAN_ fit it tighter than that! I would actually argue that a blade, be it a knife or a sword, with a more loose-fitting guard than this _cannot_ be worth more than a couple hundred bucks.

    That's a good setting here on your porch (is it how it is called ?) but RIP your eyes :p
    The liberties taken for the design might be a problem for reenactors but should be ok with collectors I believe, it's still a beautiful object. Tho I'm a bit surprised with the handle, doesn't look historically accurate. Finally, the weapon being too heavy is a downside for a gladius and I find it really weird that the description on the website doesn't match.

    Is there an issue with the "broken wrist" grip when cutting with the gladius? Since that's how it is intended to be gripped, is there anything in particular that you do to prevent injury?

  • @schreiberundleser5318
    @schreiberundleser5318 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use a heavy shortsword for sparring (1.4 Kg) What i like about it compare to lighter shortswords it, that it can absorb more force, if i parry and is not easily knocked back. In this way i can make a good bind out of a defensiv situation and the shortness of the blade is mostly a strenght in the bind, what results in good control of the enemys weapon. It has the shape of a bronzeage leafblade and also no crossguard, so it is more risky to parry very low. A heavier short blade can block good enough in the upper sections, without getting knocked back. Its only my opinion and experience.

  • @michaelsmith5474

    I'd guess the relief design on the scabbard as being "inspired" by, but different enough to the original, so that other companies can't outright copy their design.
