    Polearms are sort of under-prioritized on the historical reproduction market, compared to swords. So I modified a cutlass by grinding it into a symmetrical, double-edged blade and mounted it on a hexagonal staff that I made from hickory boards. Not exactly a masterpiece, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
    Works nicely for some cutting tests, and to discuss a few spear / polearm techniques.

    Hewing spears were a major thing.
    Japanese Naginata saw far more use in battle by samurais than their swords did.

    • @mariusdire
      @mariusdire 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Indeed the naginata was used both as an infantry, and cavalry weapon. When on foot the extra reach meant a swordsman would have to be at least twice as fast as the spearman. Plus the but end of the naginata usually had a spiked ferrule, so could be used for piercing strikes (tsuki).
      The circular moves also build momentum, my sensei was a fairly diminutive Japanese woman, but hit like a freight train.

    For the sliding thrust driven by your rear hand (where your feet stay mostly fixed), try driving the thrust with your rear hip: rotate you rear hip forward while using a heel pivot to point your rear foot forward. Arm, hip, and foot motion should optimally all complete at the same time.

      @jamesfrankiewicz5768 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pjmeis5226 Other than the line of attack the spear follows, I consider it completely different: the feet can quite possibly stay rooted, you probably don't need to lean into the spear (I prefer to keep my back aligned to vertical), and the power hand is the rear hand while spear slides through the front hand guiding the spear to the target (zero power contribution from the from hand). However, it is really similar to the way many unarmed martial arts perform a reverse punch from a middle- or low-oblique stance.

    On the shaft additions thing:
    I remember long ago I was practicing drawing straight lines and I decided polearms were a good way to do that. While detailing the weapons I always wondered where the wrappings would go on the shaft (no, I didn't need condoms back then) and tried many different positions on each drawing before sticking to a single long handle/shaft wrap, but it never felt satisfying. Where would it go? On the middle? Close to the blade? close to the bottom? On the whole shaft? It took my over a year to realize there should be no wrapping at all and the best thing is always the naked wood, even if it looks like a lazy drawing to some people. Sometimes less is more, I guess.

Was very effective in almost all my engagements - admittedly against even less trained foes.

    I took a katana and pulled its handle off, but kept the fittings. I then used galvanized steel piping and couplers to create a new handle for it of the same approximate dimensions. I then took more galvanized steel pipe and made a mace of approximately the same size and weight as the katana. I then used couplers to make it so I could combine them. I now have a piece that can be used as a swordstaff / naginata or as individual katana / mace pieces.

      @@MrJaydog101 Exercise is really important but you actually get way more results for the effort by not eating junk food. If you just eat real food like steak and broccoli and potatoes and whatever you can eat just as much food as when you ate junk food and yet still lose weight because now you are consuming much more nutrients and fibers that will naturally make you feel full earlier and longer. These are things that not many people know but it's 100% true that 90% of your effort should go to diet and it's 100% false that eating healthy food means eating bland tasteless food. It can take your body time to acclimate if you are just used to super salty and sugary chips and drinks to get the same satisfaction from normal food but once you do you feel so much better. You can start with richer and flavorful normal foods that may seem unhealthy but compared to junk food it's actually much better. Garlic mashed potatoes with butter and milk. Rare steak with steamed and buttered broccoli with salt and pepper and A1 sauce. Beef / chicken and bean and melted cheese in a burrito with avocado and green chile and salsa sour cream. Garlic chicken noodle soup. Cheeseburger with tomato and lettuce and onion and pickle on toasted bread with the crust ripped off with cheddar cheese and salt and pepper with mayo mixed with ketchup and bbq sauce for dipping. These are all foods that are delicious and are way healthier than any junk food you can buy, and much more satisfying. The only cache is you have to make it yourself, or pay a lot of money relative to the cost of junk food to have it made for you. But once you learn to be able to make a few of these meals yourself you will unlock the secret to eating delicious food and also being healthy and satisfied. Here's another good one. Split pea soup with garlic and onion and ham, I use 1 slice of bacon chopped up after frying to add to 1 bag of split peas for the soup, you can follow the directions on the back of the split peas. Nobody knows how to cook anymore, and buying premade food is expensive and fast food is addicting like drugs and so are sugary drinks. Try lemon ice water it's so good, you can even add a little sugar if you want to and it's still much healthier than drinking soda or energy drinks since those have such an enormous amount of sweetener in them, it's more than you would ever add to your own drink if you were making it yourself, try it and you will see what I mean. Buy a bag of lemons with the smooth thinner skin on the smaller lemons, they are always better than the lemons that you can get individually which are really thick skinned and large and bumpy. Squeeze a whole half of a lemon into a tall glass of ice water and stir in a spoon of sugar if you want to, it's better than any american soda you can buy.
      People who get addicted to junk food ride a rollercoaster of weight up and down and it's almost totally out of their control it seems so I don't think you can really blame them, modern science has perfected cheap addictive junk food that even in lab tests with rats they showed that sugar lit up the same reward center in the brain as cocaine for the rats when they would pull the levers. It was never meant to be refined so much that's what causes the trouble. If you eat it in whole pineapples or by juicing oranges then it tastes so good because your body is rewarding you for consuming such a beneficial food. Once it's separated from that food and purified by itself it becomes like poison that has no nutrition and is highly addictive. You can buy a whole pineapple in the store for $3 and if you cut it up right, there are directions on the label and it should be right up a sword guy's alley then it is so sweet and refreshing and delicious, you can buy it pre cut up if you want to. Always try to buy at least 1 fruit or vegetable at the grocery store. If nothing else then I will just buy one of those little packs of blackberries or blueberries that they have right when you walk in and just eat that on the car ride home. Dark berries like black cherries and blueberries and blackberries are known to be one of the healthiest foods in the world, along with pistachios which are kind of expensive but extremely worth it if you value your health. They have more nutrients than any other nut and are the oldest cultivated nut by humans. They also were said to increase the bloodflow to the penis on one website where I was reading about the benefits of them and from then on my friend and I have only referred to them as dick nuts. If you buy all of the ingredients of all of your food yourself and cook all of your own meals it's very difficult (yet still possible) to get very overweight. And once you get good at it you will be making better tasting meals than you can get at any stores or restaurants around you for a reasonable price.

    From my experience, most wood glues are comparable. The "fast set" wood glues usually are not real wood glues and don't bond as tightly. The most important part is getting an even pressure and flat contact while it is in the vices. You don't want it to be perfectly smooth -- if the contact points are perfectly smooth run a rough sandpaper over it to give it a bit of grip. Give it time to properly set and the pieces of wood will be practically one new piece.

    A solution I found with the better polearms on the market with round shafts. It's basically the same thing you did here. Cut 4 small 60 degree reliefs. Obviously, these angled reliefs would run along the corner edges of the blade's armed position diameter. Each relief needs only be a half inch or so in width. Just enough to give a sharp edge for your hand to catch a secure grip on, but not so large as to significantly reduce the strength of the shaft's core. The relief cuts should run about two inches from the butt of the shaft to two inches to the base of the blade.

    I made a Chinese pole arm (Pu Dao) which is similar in design except the blade is bigger and the guard is oval rather than "S" shaped. To wrap the butt where the tang is sandwiched between the wood I used brass sheet. It is more malleable than steel and easier to wrap around the pole. I use pipe clamps to hold it in place while riveting it. It reinforces the wood around the tang quite sufficiently.

    In demolition, chimneys tend to break at more or less the same point (in proportion to their height) every time. The forces that dominate breakage are predictable. If reinforcing a head meant for chopping on a pole, it is best to reinforce between a quarter and a third of the length of the pole, to avoid breaking the pole or losing the head otherwise, as an approximation.. On the other hand.. hickory is a fantastic material..
    Though, from the looks of it, what you need is a combination bugzapper/polearm.

To fix it to the butt, predrill holes for the brads, or furniture tacks and use epoxy as well.For a butt spike simply drill a hole for a tight fitting nail. Push the nail through the hole from the inside of the cap and cut to length.

    I would recommend possibly incorporating a steel band attached to the guard to go down each side of the haft along with some thinner bands to wrap around and hot rivet everything through the haft to reinforce around the tang. Takes more technical skill but I would think would be quite capable of reducing the likelihood of splitting the haft near the tang
