    Wow I want one now. They should integrate solar panel Bimini top since most boats are taken out on nice sunny days.

    • @MrCurt500
      @MrCurt500 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      To much weight (which is really crucial for flying boats) for nearly no energy benefit (compared to energy need for propulsion) from such a little possible surface.
      But maybe it would integrate good into a marketing scheme.

    • @MtnXfreeride
      @MtnXfreeride 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MrCurt500 right - that boat he said was using 1kw per mile while cruising. 1kw of panels would cover most of the boat and only generate 8 to 10 miles of use per day.

    • @MtnXfreeride
      @MtnXfreeride 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @eppy epps lol some people like to have some sunlight on their boats. Keep in mind the 1kw power usage was only while at cruising speed not while accelerating. Is 20 miles really 50% more range? I missed a range stat in the video... thats pretty bad if true.

    • @MtnXfreeride
      @MtnXfreeride 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @eppy epps he is using strange terminology though and saying it is using 1 kilowatt per nautical mile. So if you have even 2500 watts of panels which are lucky to run 8 hours a day where they arent moving to point at the sun - youll get 20 miles of cruising range per sunny day. Realistically though.. he did mention while accelerating it was pulling 55 kilowatt hours.. so just doing that a few times will eat up a chunk of that. I also dont think you can fit 2.5kw of panels on a boat that small without interfering too much... plus the weight. and supports to strengthen for the weight.

    Most epic tech, boat, concept - Candela really innovated here. Great coverage, and explanation w your video :) ! PS: What impressed me the most about the Candela is that the didn‘t go down the dead-end road of simply adding more batteries into the boat. But instead rethought and solved the ‚bottleneck‘. As you said: take the boat out of the water to increase range :)

    can you get closer to the water? does it always fly, or can it float also?
    also - does this thing support oars? so if the battery is every dead I can row back to shore?

  • @ismailnyeyusof3520
    @ismailnyeyusof3520 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I get the impression that 1 kWh per nautical mile is really efficient, possible because the boat uses hydrofoils to get around on water. I look forward to seeing Candela coming out with bigger electric hydrofoil boats made cheaper using mass production processes.

    • @brianb-p6586
      @brianb-p6586 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's terribly high energy consumption compared to a car of similar weight, even if the car is moving much faster, but it's good for a boat of that size at that speed.

    None of that video showed any significant cornering. It is possible to make anything but a very gentle arc while on the foils, or do you have to get in the water for that? And how do you deal with seaweed? Shallows?

    • @metoo7587
      @metoo7587 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting that they chose not to answer that question.
      I guess that means that this boat can only "fly" in straight lines from A to B.

    • @Electrek
      @Electrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can, you just need to flip it to sport mode and the foils respond differently, flexing more for harder cornering. I imagine you can't go quite as extreme as a V hull, but you definitely can. I was only on the boat for a few hours and in a busy waterway, so I didn't go too nuts with the hard turns.

    • @loludied552
      @loludied552 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes they can and they are more common than you might think. Hydrofoils in any form are reasonably common especially in high speed vessels and are used for speed and efficiency. Most ships with hydrofoils don’t lift out of the water, mostly because hydrofoils have some disadvantages which limits how much it can be used.

    Looked & sounded so awesome for water skiing... until you described it stopping and having to get going again through big wakes.
    Still a cool boat but until it can tow a water skier through a wake it isn't for me.

    • @CandelaSpeedBoat
      @CandelaSpeedBoat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It surely can. The wakes we went through were huge, so any 25 foot boat would have slowed down for them. In a foiling boat, you have a better chance to make it through, though!

    Are these designed for salt water? I'm a huge supporter of the environment but accidents happen. What happens if by chance the boat sinks, the damage the batteries will do to our waters.

      Fossil fuel boats spill oil byproducts and coolant into the water even under normal conditions. Countries dump waste into the ocean far worse than the potential for one battery powered boat. If a normal boat gets damaged, cleanup costs for the petrol products are huge. This design has none of those hazards. Conclusion? Electric boats are much cleaner than ICE boats!

    This boat has limited practical uses.

  • @dadthelad
    @dadthelad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    FFS mate, we all know what hydrofoils are, they've been around forever, you're being a complete tool pretending it's something new and that you are "flying". The reason most boats don't have them, is they are useless, or even dangerous, when there's any decent swell; they are sensitive to impacts with floating objects and marine life; and they are more expensive and complex to build and maintain. They peaked in popularity in the 60's and 70's, but have declined since for those reasons and more.
    Yes, electric boats with their limited range battery issues might lead to a temporary, niche, revitalisation of them, but they will disappear again when the battery problem is solved.

      @CandelaSpeedBoat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      At high speeds (20+ knots), the Candela C-7 is the most efficient boat in the world. And also has the longest range of any electric boat out there, thanks to the hydrofoils. At really slow speeds, displacement-type boats like most sailboats are really effective.

      Pretty sure a hydrofoil multihull sailboat is even more efficient. And even faster. And wind is free.
      Until Candela comes out with a solar powered electric boat, maybe.
