I always struggle with dithered shading, never knowing where to finish the checkerboard pattern, this is a nice example of how to do it properly by following the 'form' of the object.
I'm trying to improve my pixel art as a beginner and your videos really help! I can't wait to try and make my own little pumpkins. I'm looking forward to the next video 😊✨️
I need more of these videos! I've been drawing pixel art for 3 years now but I'm always learning something new. Your approach to tilesets were nice! I'm going to try it out now after lunch. Do you have a discord channel for your subscribers?
Yo great video! How did you do the light effect on the pumpkins in the beginning? Is it in asperite or an effect you added on the sprites? It looks really good~!
Oh ye, shadows can get complicated quite easily. You can simplify it to having 1 highlight and 1 shadow. Most of them will have a light source from above, so just picture that the shadow will be the area underneath the highlight. It might vary from case to case. If so, check with a similarly simple reference, see how the highlight and shadow is positioned. Eventually you'll see a pattern. Good luck!
@@mac.ignacio for me, it depends on two things (1) how portrude is the highlight, and in what area does it lie. For the first one, for example, stairs with higher riser has a greater bump than stairs with lower riser; which means that its shadow will be bigger than the later. even more so if you compare it with a stair with no riser - or in other words a slope. imagine a voxel sphere (you can look up what it looks like to better imagine), does it have more dark areas than a smooth sphere. the voxel sphere has a surface that consist of many stairs or bumps, and has more shadows as well. Compare to a smooth sphere, which surface is more slope-like, there is not a lot of shadows, i mean - barely any. So that's the first one. The second one is in what area does it lie. Does it lie in the brighter area (e.g., does it lie at the top most where it receives most of the sun light) or does it lie in the shadow area? If it lies in the brighter area, shadows are going to be less significant (cause there's a lot of light bouncing around, which makes areas like the side of the cube brighter). Compare to the darker areas where there's not much light bouncing around, shadows are going to be more significant. I hope that answers your question
Heavily underrated pixel art creator in my opinion, your tutorials are absolutely amazing!!!

Nicely summed up! Dithered shading can indeed be a bit tricky, and it does require some careful pixel placement. Thanks @finalforeach !
These are really great! I hope to get to your level of detail someday.

@@hanapixelme How do you if some parts have less shadow than the others?

@@hanapixelme Thank you for explaining that with much details. Its more clearer now but I need to practice really hard to get this concept.
