- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 2 ส.ค. 2024
- Hana here! In this video, I'll be taking you on a creative journey to design your very own Bush Sprites. From Side-Scroller bushes to Top Down Bushes, we'll cover it all step by step. #bush #pixelart #howto #game
Most of these bushes will be in a medium size (48x32).
Unfortunately, we won't be covering color palette in this tutorial since this video mainly focuses on creating game-compatible-looking bush sprites. But you can sample the color palette and how I create the color palette in the comment section.
Throughout the tutorial, I'll share valuable tips and tricks to make your Bush Sprites stand out. Learn how to master shading techniques, where to place highlights and shadows, and even how to create pixel art curves for that perfect touch.
Whether you're new to pixel art or looking to improve your skills, this tutorial has something for everyone. So sit back, relax, and let's dive into the wonderful world of Bush Tiles! I hope you find this tutorial helpful and enjoyable. Don't forget to like and subscribe for more exciting content. Until next time!

Unfortunately, we won't be covering color palette in this tutorial since this video mainly focuses on creating game-compatible-looking bush sprites. But you can sample the color palette here (dark to light):
If you’re wondering how I pick my colors.
Here’s how I do it:
First of all I pick a general theme color for my bush. This can be about any color you like.
I’ll start with the base color: #2d3d12
Then I move down a bit, slightly to the right, this will be my darkest shadow color: #212f0b. A bit darker than that would get you an outline color #141d05
From the base color, I’ll pick a highlight color, which is more on the left upper side but not too far away from the base color #50662b. The highlight color will be used for the top part, which will likely be the brightest color in the palette.
Then I’ll pick a color in the middle, which is usually something in between like this one #3d4f1e
And this is optional, so I’ll place it as a separate color. I’ll pick a color that is a bit brighter than the highlight color in the palette #5f7736. These are like those reflective lights that shine directly at our eye - that's why they are super shiny.
As you can see, all these colors tend to line up in a diagonal line going towards the light. The distance between these colors is moderate. The furthest color only stretches to about half the color palette. This is to say that most colors within an object aren’t going to be very contrasting
Hana, the color palette is always difficult topic for me for one specific reason.
While your tutorials are nothing less than amazing, we have many shades of the same color here - with that, plenty of possibilities and total freedom.
On the other hand, most if not all tutorials/videos I've seen encourage the beginners to start with very limited palettes to learn the basics of the pixel art.
With that, I always wonder, how can I draw a nice bush, on a nice grass that grows on a dirt, and shade all that with 8 or 16 colors only?!
For me personally that is the big elephant in the room that no one speaks about.
Do you have any beginner friendly advice on that? 😊
@@Jazz861 hi Jazz, sorry for the late reply. I was working on the grass video. I added a part where I explain about colors. Might not be in depth, but it should cover some of the color theories. First you gotta establish the made color for each part. For e.g., what is the main color for dirt (1 main color), what is the main color fo grass, and for bushes (these colors should be distinguishable from each other - which means that our palette of 8 colors should be divided into 3, each groups shouldnt have a color that overlaps the other - at least in terms of color value). Then from that main color, you find a color that is the shadow. So thats like 6 colors. Now if u want to do 8 colors, this means that we will have 2 highlight colors. You can choose if you want to have the highlight colors for grass, bush, or dirt. This highlight should be brighter than the main color but it shouldnt be too bright. Tiles are background elements so it should blend in with each other, so thats why the highlight should be mild.
You might come across palettes that have a overal tone to it. For e.g., pastel palettes are usually bright and feels a bit less saturated. To make colors work well together. You gotta see what is the undertone to the first color u choose. Say you choose a dirt color like #795C34 - if you compare it to a brown color #964B00 (which is quite neutral compare to its parent hues - yellow/red), the color we pick is more yellow -> it has a yellow undertone. So the main colors for bushes/grasses should also have a yellow undertone. You can either manually shift the colors towards yellow, or you can put a yellow filter over the palette you initially make.
Hope that somewhat clarifies some of questions you have. Though at the end of the day, the choice is yours. Doing color palette is also about discoveries, you’re not bound to any theory. If you find anything cool and interesting to you - like a new color or a way of generating your own palette, then hell ye keep it and expand beyond that.
Best of luck to you Jazz!
@@hanapixelme amazing hints! Many thanks for that! Can't wait for the grass video.
You're making very explanatory tutorials, thanks for your time!
The quality of these videos are one of a kind, so helpful thank you

Thank you thank you 🥰
What a great how-to series, thank you! I can't wait to see more!
Thank you so much! There will definitely be more coming up 😊
Hands down my favorite channel for beginners, can't wait for more!
One of my issues is how to pick up good colors, how to define the different shades for that color (saturation, hues...) and animation
thank you so much i think those are a lot of good questions. I'll try to explain those more in future videos (cause it might take quite a while)
I love that you covered various styles and shapes!
Thank you! I think that by changing the shapes and styles, you can make something that represents ur own aesthetic 🥰
there are very few super insightful pixelart videos/channels on youtube.... you are one of them!
Thank you so much! Your words are so kind 🥰 I’ll try to make more videos in this style
Been waiting for this! Excited to go through it :))
Me too! Took so long but had to make sure that everything is worth the watch Thank you for still being here!
I am new to pixel art and working on a game and your videos have helped tremendously! Super underrated

Great tutorials, finally my art looks a bit palatable. :)
Yayy thats awesome 😊😊😊
Ooooh wait this is neat, what a bolt from the blue, thanks for the vid, Hana!
Ye it's been a month since the last upload, but thanks for hanging around
Hi There, my English ist very bad by writing text or speaking it but I want too compliment your Tutorial. It`s very good to understand and I like to watch these. I have self experiance in the Pixel theme so it's a nice Totorial for other then beginner, too. I Hope my Opinion came over and my Text is not to confusing and too full of mistakes. Thank you for the tutorials ^^
No worries! I’m glad that you’re here and you’re still continue learning art! That’s amazing 🥰
Your tutorials are awesome! Keep the good work!
Thank you so much I'll try my best to
Seus tutoriais são perfeitos, e sua voz de mel os tornam ainda mais lindos. Obrigado, Hana! ❤
Aw thank you 🥰
Thankyou sm !!
Thanks to you too for watching the video
This is excellent information! I Just wish you had more videos 😊. I can't wait to learn more! Something on side scroller backgrounds would be fantastic! And I love urban and post urban landscapes. Learning about different metal and rust textures, from your teaching style would be great! But either way, Thanks for the time you put into these!
Thank you so much for your support and suggestions!! I'll consider them for future videos
That is amazing it really helps I am starting game dev so I would love to get some more practice in and I suck at leaves so these are a lifesaver thank you so much I would love to see more vids from you (:
I’m glad that the video helped you out a lot! I’m doing grass next-so it’s gonna be more greeneries 😊
@@hanapixelme thanks I really need help with nature lol, it’s so much more different than traditional
Great tutorial as always, gonna use it expand my range of abilities
Thank you so much I'm glad that you got a lot from it!
Great video! Thanks for leaving in the error so we can see how you correct it without having to start over.
Totally! Mistakes are part of the art process, so as how to solve it 😊
Thank you for this! I would love to see a water/pond tutorial if possible, you are amazing at explaining pixel art :D
Thank you so much! I'm planning to do something more beginner-ish. will be back soon
I'm always struggles to draw a nice looking Bush, but thanks to your amazing tutorial. I can draw beautiful bushes ❤❤❤
Aw thanks! Bushes are quite tricky but once you get the hang of it, everything would become quite natural
Have you think to create tutorials for characters and basic farming actions like Stardew Valley? It would be amazing, keep your hard work, nice tutorials!
Yes! I think that would be a great idea. I'm having my content planned out; it might go more into the farm asset route ~ maybe
great vid!, can't wait for another vid to comeout NEXT MONTH!!!
Hahaha, considering changing the outro to "That's all for this video, see ya next month" fr 😂
Great tutorial! It's hard to find people that truly know how to convey what they're doing to an audience. You do an awesome job of explaining what you're doing while doing it without skipping steps. A solid educational feel to the video! Keep these coming and I think you'll get a solid following! Do you make video games yourself or you just enjoy Pixel Art?
Thank you so much Some of my friends are also just starting out so I get to sit down and follow their process, see where they struggle the most, and help them step-by-step. I guess that's also the purpose of this channel. Hopefully I'll be able to make more of them. I had some personal game projects, but its not as impressive as those I see in game jams 😝
@@hanapixelme I'm sure your work is just as good. I feel like Game jams recently have been fluffed with people using already made assets and code vs those who truly try to develop from scratch.
I just started getting into making games with a close friend. I'm looking at ALL the channels to feed me knowledge and yours is great for learning. I hope to see much more! I think I'll be putting my work up for critique in the Lospec discord soon :D
@@heyitsbuddah1270 thats awesome. I'd be happy to see your work. And ye maybe if I find it I'll check it out on discord
Круто, ❤❤❤❤❤
Spikey bushes so good! Give so many happies... so I happy too!!!
Wow Hana.. you make magic with those pixels! Can't believe how everything just comes together making a real object!
That poor Cronco sprite worried about the color error is so cute 😅 haha.
But wait!... i know there is an option to change the color of any single color in aseprite.... i can't remember the name but you can pick a color then another color to replace it and it changes all pixels of the color you picked.... 😢
Cronco you're so cute... MARRY ME!!! 🌹❤🍫 🥰 💒 🔔 💍 🍯 🌙😅
Eyedropper - Select color to change - Shift+ R - Click Palette 'To:' - Select color you want & 'Ok'
Hai? Hai? 🤔
*Rolls around on the floor*
Broom Broom! BRRROOOM!
@@pixelartgamergirl yep, that's one way to do it!
in other cases where you want to introduce another color to the palette instead of shifting it down by one color, you can think about drawing strokes of colors like that
Thank you so much! Cronco is also very happy
@@hanapixelme Meow! danke Danke! I am so happy to be your pupil! 😊
Watching this literally for the 10th time now.
OMG no way! 10 times, that's insane!
