You're welcome. Depending on your budget Sony is launching a new 4k camera next month for $3195, the z150. Might want to consider that too. The jvc is a great value for $1295.
+illdaddyrod one question. What is the model that you have? Is it GY-HM170U? What is the difference with GY-HM170UA? The one that B&H have is www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1194106-REG/jvc_gy_hm170ua_4kcam_compact_professional.html Which doesnt say have PAL(50i/50p)
My church just got the GY-HM170 and I set up the mixer board to it and adjusted the sound manually cause I'm the musician, but I have messed with nearly every setting on this camera with the media team and nobody what we change the picture stays grainy. I even went outside in the bright sunlight and that was even worse. I turned it to it's lowest setting so it wouldn't be so bright but it still had trouble focusing on logos and words on the church van and the picture just looks awful. Am I doing something wrong or is there a missing setting or do I need to update the firmware? This is horrible.
Hey, I’ve got one of these that I’m using, at the moment the video is coming up very grainy and/or pixelated in a dark outbuilding. What can I do in terms of changing settings in order to get rid of this grainy video?? P.S. Unfortunately I cannot film in a better lit room due to Covid-19 Lockdowns.
Hi illdaddyrod, could you advise, I'm using this camera for live streaming with OBS, but I'm unable to clear the LCD screen. If I have the camera set in auto or manual the initial A or M remains on the LCD screen finder. Any help and advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks.
Hi again, I have a question about the JVC170 I have a media card in the A slot and the view finder says incorrect. When I press rec the message is REC Inhibited. When I put the card in my computer all of the video is there. I also switch the media card lock and nothing happen.
Hi illdaddyrod, good video, quick question. When I white balance, I just zoom in on a white piece of paper, then press the button in the front of the camera ? It really doesn't seem any different in the view finder is that normal? I stated on white balance B then tried it out. One more question . How do I view what I just video on my view finder. I mean playback.Thank You
Lisa Lisa Thank you. To review your footage just press and hold the mode button. As far as white balancing, make sure entire lens is showing white before you press the button. It should get you really close. You can fine tune it manually. I had the iris button changed to wb and fine tuned it if needed. Hope this helps.
I no longer have this camera. I sold it after some bad experience with it. You definitely wouldn't want to use this for a school production with lol lights. Camera is prone to purple blobs. If you look it up online you'll see what I'm talking about. If it's not too late I'd return the camera. I wouldn't even want this camera again for free.
Hello, thanks for your reviews on JVC GY-HM170. Will you be able to do one that show the 12x zoom and 24x dynamic zoom? Will like to find out the quality of the dynamic zoom before making purchase. Thanks a million!
Thanks for doing this. Sometimes reading the book can get so dry. I just got mine today and haven't had any time to shoot much with it. I wear glasses and I noticed that I can't see through the eyepiece because it's all a blur. It's better when I take off my glasses. is there a way to adjust that?
I'd have to look but it should have a rolling switch to adjust vision near eye piece. It will be minimal. Your prescription can't be too extreme I guess.
Question, we recently got this model and when we first turned it on the screen didn't add up to the footage it was spitting out. It had this old white sheer look to it (Like how our video cameras looked like in the 90s). It's been really frustrating and we've tried resetting it. It's showing both on the LCD display and through the viewfinder. But when we would try to record something and check it out, the footage looked normal. Any idea how to fix it?
Wondering if it's defective. I didn't have to adjust lcd at all but by default camera has peaking set on lcd which you should turn all the way down. It's hard to explain but you still can use regular peaking but the lcd one needs to be turned off. Maybe that might help.
Question - On Record set Slot Mode Settings - You have it set for Dual. Does that mean A & B run at the same time? If I just want A and switch to B when A runs out. which slot mode setting do I use?
Hi, quick question when I want to shoot in slow motion on my JVC 170 I go to system, record set, record format put it on high-speed and frame rate 120/30. would that work and also when your shooting it do you see it in slow motion though the camera. Is it better just to shoot it normal and then when you edit it in a program use the slow motion effect. What do you think. Thank You
Lisa Lisa 120/30p usually looks fine. if you want to film normally and slow it down yourself in edit, make sure you use a shutter speed of already 1/250. Keep in mind you'll need good lighting regardless of how you shoot it with those shutter speeds.
On some cameras the max video file is 4gb per file. Don't worry though. When you place then into your timeline it will be fine. You won't be missing anything. It will be smooth with no gaps.
illdaddyrod Thanks but I am filiming a wedding where I am not asked to edit it. And i use this camera that you reviewed so does this camera not have the feature to put everything in one video? Because if I put all the clips in one video editing program I have to render it which takes a lot of time. So there is not the opportunity to change something in the settings? My secon question is: The quality is really weird although I reseted everything and tried a lot. It‘s the same cam and the settings are at HD so what am I doing wrong? Do you have the perfect settings for indoor videos like weddings? Sorry for my bad English :)
I need help, I started using this camera about 2 months ago works great...but I noticed the last 2 times I used it i'm having real trouble in low light, even if its just slightly dark in the room or outside....if there is no direct fixed lighting its barley usable. faces and everything are black, and its even worse when zooming in..... PLEASE how can I fix this problem.
Vspree All I can say is this is not the best low light camera. It seems most 4k cameras struggle in low light. As far as getting dark when zooming in, that is the iris closing which is normal for this camera. Unfortunately this is one of the knocks on this camera. it hasn't bothered me at all for the shooting I use it for. This camera really shines outside in daylight. As far as faces being dark in other situations I would suggest a camera reset. That shouldn't be happening. I did a test on my channel which shows my dog rolling around in a low lit room which came out great. Might be a setting on your camera.
I'm sort of new to video and I purchased this camera last year. Any chance of you making a video to explain what each of the menu items actually DO? I know much of it, but there are some things that I have no idea what they do.
+illdaddyrod Oh man, there are too many to list, but when I get a chance in the next few days, I'll send them to you if you're up to answering them. Terms I've never heard of before, and this is such a new camera that not many people talk about it like they do the Panasonic GH4 (which I have two of).
+illdaddyrod Thank you! I will. I've been a pro still photographer since 1982 and have wanted to get into video for the longest. I finally took the plunge last year. I've learned a lot since then, but this camera in particular can be a pain, especially with the chromatic abberations.
Thank you for this walk through. I just received mine in the mail. I have a hard time making it work. I am not a professional (obviously), could you do a step by step instruction on how to operate this camera?
Hello, how are you ? I from Brazil. I followed your tutorial and now the message: rec inhibited. I found some video saying that it is the card in the padlock position but it is not that problem I have a t3i and I did the test and it is recording normal, but when I put the card in jc hm 200 of the message: rec inhibited after I have followed his tutorial. What can it be ? I also changed card. can you help me please ?
Thank you ! The card is correct because I was recording normal. I managed to solve it by doing the resset on the camera. Some setup I followed from the video I was locking. Thank you for the attention
Hi,Smooth trans;means smooth transition, example Ur shooting your video in a sunny day and then over sudden the clouds cover pops from ,this means you have to open the iris,so as to increase the light amount on your subject, smooth trans fades it slowly and no abrupt light bunp to your subject.
first off, great video. I have a quick question, i'm having a hard time figuring out how to remove the "STBY" icon from the lcd display screen. Is there a way to do this?
is there a reason why I can't hear any audio while i'm recording? Literally my headphone are plugged in and I can't hear anything unless I rematch the video. I want to be able to hear everything while the audio is being recorded, not just replaying it after I finish shooting?
You should be able to hear the audio as it is recording through your headphones. If you're worried about levels, watch the bar on the bottom. You don't want it to go into the red.
rafiu ibrahim Absolutely not. I wouldn't want that camera back for free. Horrible camera. Terrible in low light and Google purple mud. Stay far away. If you want a good 4k I'd recommend the Panasonic HCX1. I love mine. Haven't shot a wedding with it yet. I did a bunch of tests if you look on my channel.
Bruh u saved me with the view finder .. it had way too much noise on default , the -10 set up was a life saver
Thanks!! This really help me in deciding which camera to buy!

Got it working, it was a stupid button that said LOLOX3, someone probably pushed it by accident.

I'm sorry I no longer own this camera to check on how to do that. Is there a display on/off button? That should take everything off the lcd
I've tried doing the obvious, clicking on the display button but the A and M initial still remains

Hey Nice Video, can you explain in another video what effect each of the menu items actually have on your footage? Thanks...
Thanks. Are there specific items/settings you'd like to know about?
All of them! I just got this camera as a gift and have no clue what all the settings mean... The instruction manual is useless. Help!!!! Thank You!!
Aló b tardes muy bueno su video muy bueno ahora mismo estoi configurando mi cámara. Gracias a usted. Un saludo amigo 😊

Hey, I will like to ask you how I can find the videos on the camera that I have already recorded?
What if one were filming a darker performance in a theatre (school production)? How would you adjust the settings? Thanks so much!
How do you set up your sd card for recording?
I'm sorry I no longer have this camera. I don't remember how I had it setup

I'll do one this weekend.
+illdaddyrod , Appreciate that, looking forward to it.

Found it. Thanks.
make sure you have a good external light, I did and it made a big difference

raytadeo1 Yes mine was setup to record at the same time for an instant backup. For the way you want to record you should choose relay recording.

ComunidadeWEB My guess would be the card isn't suitable for the format you're trying to record in. Make sure your card is U3 Class10 for this camera.
Thank you ! The card is correct because I was recording normal. I managed to solve it by doing the resset on the camera. Some setup I followed from the video I was locking. Thank you for the attention

You are going through the menu settings, saying we can set it here or there, but aren't saying what certain setting do or its purpose.
I have it,,but I don't know how to work this retro camera
first off, great video. I have a quick question, i'm having a hard time figuring out how to remove the "STBY" icon from the lcd display screen. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks. I can check mine this weekend and get back to you
thank you!
unshure88 Hey checked my over the weekend and didn't see that on my LCD. Not sure how to remove it since mine doesn't have it. Sorry.
no problem, thank you for checking!
+unshure88 Curious if it is always on? Should only be on if it is paused...that might be why you see it.
is there a reason why I can't hear any audio while i'm recording? Literally my headphone are plugged in and I can't hear anything unless I rematch the video. I want to be able to hear everything while the audio is being recorded, not just replaying it after I finish shooting?

could be because your volume isn't turned up, I don't have a problem
Weird mine has bars grayed out and I can't turn them on while in camera mode.
How do you get your camera to Manual?
Wesley Brown There is a switch on the side.
illdaddyrod I dont see a auto manual mode switch...
Wesley Brown Hit the full auto mode button if I remember right and you'll be in manual mode
Got it... Thank you!
Can you tell me if the camera good on low light & is it good camera for shouting at wedding
rafiu ibrahim Sony NX100. It's amazing! I've gotten great results with it.
Hello. can anybody tell me why TC generator can't be switched to REC run (it's always grey). The only option we can activate is free run.
We found it in detailed instructions (pro.jvc.com/pro/attributes/4k/manual/GY-HM200_170EN.pdf). You have to turn off the pre-record function.
How to remove all information from the display?
I don't have this camera anymore but I would assume there is a "display" button which is normally a standard button on most cameras
my video camera is no attachment
what about JVC GY-HM170
rafiu ibrahim Absolutely not. I wouldn't want that camera back for free. Horrible camera. Terrible in low light and Google purple mud. Stay far away. If you want a good 4k I'd recommend the Panasonic HCX1. I love mine. Haven't shot a wedding with it yet. I did a bunch of tests if you look on my channel.
la JVC GY HM 200 no tiene salida por sdi en 4K solo exporta señal 1080, muy mala elección al comprarla.. realmente no es 4K
