l was waiting for one of your mugs having tape over it saying mustie1, thanks for the shout out, and hope you have better luck in the water then l did, its more like point 4 miles an hour..
Musti 1 I used to have a,scrambler had alot of fun with it tayl is right on the transmission it need one and it will go alitle faster with the fnr version putting a vanguard will help lol they all fun machines I still enjoy them when I can
I used to work at the place that built those, back in the 80's. That particular one looks like part Action Age machine. The newer one's has a gas tank under the dash, first ones were metal tanks then they put plastic ones in. They started putting a hood on the back to excess the motor better too. The reverse in newer machines was just a starter motor that ran off a toothed brake disc. The "brake fluid" on newer ones used transmission fluid. I don't know what type yours would have. Some had bilge pumps mounted on them to prevent sinking. I know every part on those machines. They stopped making those in Genoa in early 90's I think. The tracks for those are a pain in the rear to take off and put on if they weren't properly maintained. You have to drive them opposite of how you drive something else, foot to the floor while turning! Lol. Thanks!
Ha! I loved the Bananna Splits. I repair the onboard effects on the old VOX guitars they used to play on that show. This thing also reminds me of something you'd see in a 1967 Playboy magazine spread.
My buddy had one when we were 14. We drove the crap out of it for a couple years and the darn thing would go everywhere we pointed it. Really cool to see one on here.
I owned a Scrambler back in the 70s. Reverse was another starter motor that engaged a sprocket on the jack shaft. It worked, but not very well. The machine would wear out the chain sprockets and I rebuilt the drive assembly at least twice. I think body flex was the reason for that. It would go in water, but if you had a strong crosswind it was difficult to control as the speed in water was very slow. Mine was a 16 horse, I think you would like that engine better. I gave mine away to my next door neighbor after I bought my first 3 wheeler. Good luck with your project.
I just got a Max 2 6x6 last year. That thing is a blast to tear up the trails with! Mine came with a 16hp Vanguard v-twin. Unfortunately the flywheel cracked and Briggs doesn't sell the 805192 anymore. It took me a few months to scrounge up the right one. I'm waiting for it to be delivered Saturday, or Monday. I can't wait to get it running again. Mine didn't go very well in the snow, but in the mud, it's a screamer! I hope you have some fun times with your 6x6. I'm glad my Max 2 came with it's manuals. It may be a bitch to work on, but it's worth it to me.
I worked in a mower shop in the mid 90’s when I was a teenager. Some guy dropped one off to work on. They’re pretty cool! Seriously you guys are the BEST on you tube! I laugh all the time with Taryl’s sarcasm! Lol!!
I have a till... err "garden scratcher" with an 8HP briggs engine on it with a similar carb (that looks like the bigger "4 bolt" carb, mine is the "3 bolt"). I completely rebuilt the carb (new needle / seat / needle valves / all gaskets), but when I choke it fully, gas dripps out of the throttle plate shaft when cranking the engine. If I only half choke it, it's fine, starts up, and it runs great with the choke fully open after it warms up for a few seconds. Once it's running, nothing drips on the carb, and it can sit forever with the engine off and the fuel shutoff on, and no dripping, so I think the needle and seat is fine. When it's fully choked, those carbs just just seem to vacuum the gas out of the float bowl! Looks like yours has the same issue! Half choke should be enough! Or maybe it's because the top of those carbs tend to go all "warpy bendy", and now there's an air leak into the bowl that allows too much gas to get sucked up when it's fully choked?
Check the tire sizes, most of those run a slightly larger tire in the center position to help them pivot on turns. That one looks like the larger tires are on the front and rear of the right side and the other 4 are the smaller ones.
It's a SKID STEER. I think the middle tires need to be the largest ones so it will pivot easier. Right now it looks like the middle tires are the smallest ones.
You are such a stand up man. You took it but made sure to tell him that he could come by your shop and you will take care of him. I've dealt with Taryl & company, FINE people! Best to all and enjoy fixing things. :)
The Banana splits drove Amphicat 6x6 ATVs. Very similar to the scrambler but there are some key differences. The Amphicats were a lot nicer and larger with a larger engine, better steering, reverse gear, and a top speed of 30 mph! I love 6x6 ATVs and have an Amphicat of my own! Great video, I would love to see more on this machine!
Good idea to make the rear open up ! I would use a 12 volt starter for reverse , my gold wing trike has one and it works great ! Just use a on/off switch and a momentary button ! Easy Peazy !
I had a Chaparral 6 wheeler in the late 70s. It was driven by 2 sticks. Had a 2 cycle engine in it. Bought it used. Needed a bunch of work on the chains and bearing to each wheel which I fixed. Ran good. Had it a few years and a guy offered to buy it from me. Sold it to him cause there was to much work to keep it going. So i sold it and bought a 3 wheeler. Wish I had it back now.
I've watched a bunch of your videos before this one. While all are more than are helpful....this one in particular is reassuring as it shows how you go through the troubleshooting where initially your diagnosis fails to fix the issue. Then further testing shows where the issue lies.
Nice find Taryl that is a beauty. Be careful not to hack up the body too much that body is real nice. Mabey you can replace the pop rivets with some easier way to remove the complete top cover. That may keep it sealed better in the water. Good luck.
Very cool. I remember seeing one of these in the early 70's. In Saint John, IN. There was an area known as 'Jones's twenty acres' where the owner was very old, and didn't keep tabs on the property, which was mostly a huge shallow swamp. No one really went there, or fished there because it was so shallow, maybe four feet deep. But we rode our mini bikes around the area and one day someone came out in one of these and it was pretty cool. BTW, I bet this is where the Ruskies got the idea for the now, best ATV in the world, the SHERP. They cost over $100k and are amazing machines, powered by a Kabota diesel engine and can go anywhere and are nearly impossible to get stuck.
Hello Taryl. Ur the man who can fix it. I’m glad he gave it to u. Someone who can use it and make video’s for people who needs help with there’s. No better person than you to receive it. From ur wv hillbilly buddy. Stay safe and keep those video’s rolling.
I try to watch all the small engine mustie videos. I have learned so much. The car or vw ones I don't get into. These videos supplement when those come out .
I really enjoy your comedy along with your professional skill set with small engine repair. I anticipate this scrambler is going to provide some awesome video content.
When I fixed selectric typewriters I always installed a second beĺt on the drive shaft for the same reason. To tear the typewriter apart to replace the belt was a lot of work. But when the belt broke it was a 5 minute job to put the spare on.
Geez, you could buy a base model compact car in 1974 for less than the price of those things! Truly a rich man's toy back then...a Grassrat buggy today!
Kool amphib machine, ya might be able to mount reverse towards the rear near the engine. Maybe you can send mustie a spark cker since he never uses one. And may I suggest cable luber for motor cycles to shoot lube in these cables on mowers. I for years took them apart to lubricate them. It wraps around the end and a hole for lube is in the side. Works well.
Cool --- the "12 G.I. Joe action figure from the '70's had several of these scramblers in playsets.... remember them well - as the Banana Splits show back then - great addition to your motor pool Taryl !!!!
That was my first thought; That was not your average mini-bike for the kids. I imagine it's going to be some fun to drive once he's got it up to snuff.
Fun fact about these, when honda was innovating the concept of the three wheeled atvs with the first ATV ever, the 1970 US90 they originally tried cultivator tires, but the head engineer, or "Tak" short for Takeuchi wanted a tire that would not marr up the earth or leave ruts or otherwise disturb nature. Honda imported a version of one of these called an "amphi-cat" and stole the tires off of it, thus creating the basis for the modern ATV. Just a fun bit of information regarding ATV history.
I'm no mechanic...but I agree... you'd think the manufacturer woulda designed this thing to be more easily serviceable. Taryl, I'm really looking forward to seeing a series of vids about fixing this dude up...
He says follow us, don't bother us. I mean hey, I know I asked a question no one on TH-cam covered, how to bend one of those brake pads they use on certain machinery, because they come shipped flat. If ya ask me, it would be a good topic to cover in a video, because no one has and people wanna know. But hey what do I know right? I only work on small power equipment every day. He's got time for some not others, like across the pond. Its all good. Still a good topic to cover, how to bend one of those solid flat brake shoes into the curved shape it needs to be in to rub against the pulley to stop the implement from turning. I'm sure I'm not the only one whos ever sent a question though. Maybe I'll make a video on it, I got instructions from Ariens on how its done. 🍰
Banana Splits drove a 6x6 called a Bazoo. First problem with steering is tires, the right side middle tire appears to be smaller diameter than the other two. The secret to steering a 6x6 or 8x8 on pavement or hard pack is the center tires. Inflate them so they slightly balloon up higher than the outermost tires. This is where the steering pivot point will be. I restored a 70`s Argo 6 wheeler and I can turn it on pavement no problem...in fact I can rip donuts on spot on pavement.
Where did you get that Jerry can pump I need one of those things. 👍👍 I say check the ground pressure on that little six-wheeled unit and run over slippers 😅😅😅
I once knew a man who had six of these little bad boy's in his backyard! They were there for over 20 yrs before one day they all just vanished-along with two 1958 chevy Nomads and and a 57 Nomad! I figured he passed away because soon afterward the house was refurbished and sold! I begged pleaded and whined over the Nomads as that's always been my dream to own one! And the six wheelers well I won't even begin to say how many people begged him to sell one! I know my name was on the long list.
If you look at the Price sheet at 10:18, you can see what appears to be the dealer's handwritten notations regarding the 6-six wheeled Scrambler with a factory 10 hp. The use of the " " " indicate "same" and are used to show that while the factory sell sheet only lists the 10 hp in the Gotcha, this, possibly a custom factory order, was priced below what was no doubt, that hard to sell above $2,000 price point. It appears it was given the model number 3400 possibly as the sell sheet was made before the 10hp Scrambler option was available.
Also if you notice, there are references to a "Model 1100" only in the parts diagrams section of the documentation. This seems to indicate the company went through a few model offering changes/model number changes through the years, likely to coincide with changes to engine availability, design, demand, etc.
Seems like a good candidate for a full hydraulic drive system. Gas motor drives a hydraulic pump which drives 2 hydraulic "motors", 1 on each side. Ditch the steering wheel and go with levers on the metering valves for steering and forward and reverse.
We still have ours. My Dad bought the 6 wheel model new in 1973. 17 years ago we put a 81 arctic cat el tegre 6000 engine in it. It’s a 500 liquid cooled. It still run great and is pretty fast . Has the Suzuki 500
That's an old action age Scrambler I got about 10 of them. You can replace the clutches what's the disc off of Volkswagen clutch or have them realigned at a brake shop. They throw a lot of chains because they didn't have a chassis unless you use new But there are a lot of fun
This one was brilliant. So funny. You and Mustie are my favourites on TH-cam. It’s true, Mustie does use your mugs for old gas. As well as the fun, it’s educational too. Love it. Keep it up. 👍
I had a later 60's MAX and my dad had the newer 70 RAM 6 wheel; things. After a lot of jamming on the steering the chains stretch. Fun as all get out but a lot of work. Water freeboard is about one inch, not that good in deep snow. Great Video
its funny because i am in toledo which is about 15 minute to genoa, oh. I always thought those things were cool but didnt see a ton of them around here. had no clue they were made here. cool little bit of info. thanks for the video!!
If you run it in the water put in a bulge pump Water does get in you can pump it out. Also might be easier to do. Some snow machines use a starter motor to reverse the drive. Just add a button and a starter motor to the main shaft. Could also use a small winch
this design is something like to old bobcat skid steer loaders. They also had the same setup but the steering lever would make it go forward and backward. That was how you steered it. My neighbor had a Max II for sale, I looked it up and to get it running like it should would have cost to much. They are still being made in Buffalo, NY. They also have the skid steer transmission, this might be what you are looking for Daryl? They also came out with a new design.
If you run the center tires at a higher pressure than the end tires it will steer "better". Im glad you tried it on blacktop. That demonstrates a tendency to steer like a supertanker.

Mustie1 - I was thinking the same thing!
What a bonus Sunday - both a Mustie and a Tarryl video same day.

When are we going to see some Mustie1 “merch”? Could put my Mustie1 mug next to my Taryl mug. My 2 favorite TH-cam channels.

What was that company called if you don’t mind me asking?
That scrambler looks like a cousin to the Argo machine. Glad you got it running. Good show.
One man's trash is another mans money pit.

Soon as I saw the thumbnail, I said. "YES!! The Banana Splits"
When I was a kid the Banana Splits rode these.
This video is a part numbers jackpot! We got our breakfast lunch and dinner with all those part numbers! Thanks Taryl!
Nice project. I'm looking forward to this build.
That would be some good gas to leave out in the open for the thieves to steal.
Maybe Ronnie could use some free gas…lol.
Just add some K100. It will be fine.
Your a good person. People always want help good people like you! I can’t wait to meet you!!

Mustie1 has a Beaver and Taryl a Scrambler. It's Time for an atv race.
indiana vs new hampshire.
Mustie1's goes nowhere in water.
He did have a lotta fun on a go cart track tho against go carts.
Awesome vid that one.

Good Eye! The centre wheels are definitely smaller and should likely be on the front. More air in center wheels would also help.
I've been working on my garden tractors all day, wish you were here!
It's a SKID STEER. I think the middle tires need to be the largest ones so it will pivot easier. Right now it looks like the middle tires are the smallest ones.
I thought the same.
Banana split was killer man
Hey Tarel, no tools needed to change that belt, it's on the shaft already, just put it on the motor side first and run it up over the drive pully ...
Yo yo from the 🇬🇧 6 wheels no way man. For free wooo hooo
That thing will be a sweet ride once taryl gets it the way he wants it..
You are such a stand up man. You took it but made sure to tell him that he could come by your shop and you will take care of him. I've dealt with Taryl & company, FINE people! Best to all and enjoy fixing things. :)

Nice find.
Someone was smart enough to put the extra belt over the shafts already.
Good idea to make the rear open up ! I would use a 12 volt starter for reverse , my gold wing trike has one and it works great ! Just use a on/off switch and a momentary button ! Easy Peazy !
My uncle used one to herd cows with one, they were great.
And my uncle is herding Bees...
2:55. That's good customer relations, guy gives it to you for free, so you hook him up with the shop's good neighbor discount
Taryl you should take that booger to the Portland minibike show, that would be cool!
I had a Chaparral 6 wheeler in the late 70s. It was driven by 2 sticks. Had a 2 cycle engine in it. Bought it used. Needed a bunch of work on the chains and bearing to each wheel which I fixed. Nice find Taryl that is a beauty. Be careful not to hack up the body too much that body is real nice. Mabey you can replace the pop rivets with some easier way to remove the complete top cover. That may keep it sealed better in the water. Good luck.

Definitely need a Mustie! Coffee mug. I'm always looking for that Easter egg on his video's, good stuff
I knew I was in for a treat today ! You guys make top notch entertainment.
No such thing as being to hard on the beaver 🤣🤣🤣
Love Mustie1, but cant always commit to his 1 hour plus videos... usually binge them in the winter when outdoor fun is limited!!
I try to watch all the small engine mustie videos. I have learned so much. The car or vw ones I don't get into. These videos supplement when those come out .
I always wanted one of those! Awesome!!! I’m sure as always the idea of having one and the performance is a big difference...
Holy cow! That $2144 in '74 is almost $12000 today!
I really enjoy your comedy along with your professional skill set with small engine repair. I anticipate this scrambler is going to provide some awesome video content.
I had an attex 340cc snowmobile engine 2strke 2 cyl on six wheeler that went 55mph faster than you wanted to
When I fixed selectric typewriters I always installed a second beĺt on the drive shaft for the same reason. To tear the typewriter apart to replace the belt was a lot of work. But when the belt broke it was a 5 minute job to put the spare on.
Back in Maine family had one in the 60's called a Jigger.
slippers was the charm to get it running. i keep learning from taryl and mustie, keep up the good work
This is one of THE coolest things you’ve had PLEASE give us updates and progress soon 😎👍🏻
Geez, you could buy a base model compact car in 1974 for less than the price of those things! Truly a rich man's toy back then...a Grassrat buggy today!

Wow, using an inflation calculator, those things were $11-12K in todays dollars.
That was my first thought; That was not your average mini-bike for the kids. I imagine it's going to be some fun to drive once he's got it up to snuff.
That's where hover craft come in 😉
Awesome, I hope you can fit the Vanguard in it Taryl 👍🍻

Holy crap, Taryl! MAJOR PROPS for the Bannana Splits reference! I had to search you tube and watch the intro again. Thumbs up as always.
Where did you get that Jerry can pump I need one of those things. 👍👍
I say check the ground pressure on that little six-wheeled unit and run over slippers 😅😅😅
I need one of those gas can pumps too for my diesel tractor 5 gal cans!
That's okay found one Tera Pump. Thanks for sharing Taryl Fixes All.

The banana splits! Yes.. put a diesel motor.. 😅 Great score 👏
Yep a 2 cyl would be perfect!
Still not clear how it steers? Does it disengage the inside wheels? Or is there a differential somewhere?

WOW. I like that battery powered gas can pump! I need me one of them!
Taryl, thanks for the funny ride in the parking lot! Laughed my arse off!
Sweet!!! Looking forward to seeing the upgrades.
Slippers + Sunday = Most excellent. The inaccessibility of the motor looks like a colossal PITA.
That's an old action age Scrambler I got about 10 of them. You can replace the clutches what's the disc off of Volkswagen clutch or have them realigned at a brake shop. They throw a lot of chains because they didn't have a chassis unless you use new But there are a lot of fun
I rode in one that belonged to the forestry dept in the 1960s. It was orange, steered with levers. It did seem to be better built.
Likely by ARGO made in New Hamburg ON.
@@gordbaker896 Yes that sounds familiar. It worked well and I'm thankful for that because it was quite the rigorous course.
This one was brilliant. So funny. You and Mustie are my favourites on TH-cam. It’s true, Mustie does use your mugs for old gas. As well as the fun, it’s educational too. Love it. Keep it up. 👍
That belt looks like it is set up for a quick change. Last time it was changed they slipped the extra one over the shaft. Pretty smart
Old man slippers is the star of these shows !
I had a later 60's MAX and my dad had the newer 70 RAM 6 wheel; things. After a lot of jamming on the steering the chains stretch. Fun as all get out but a lot of work. Water freeboard is about one inch, not that good in deep snow.
Great Video
Oh yeah ... remembered having a time with the wheel bearings and seals leaking in water.
its funny because i am in toledo which is about 15 minute to genoa, oh. I always thought those things were cool but didnt see a ton of them around here. had no clue they were made here. cool little bit of info. thanks for the video!!
"well give it a yank and let's roll" LMAO!
where did you get your gas pumps y used in this video?
If it was mine those rivets would go and be replaced with stainless screws and self locking nuts.
A little hard on the BEAVER last night, LOL, you Tarly are by far my favorite TH-cam channel, keep up the great work 👍and there’s YOUR dinner.
Banana Splits and their Evolution Revolution Band. Those apes sure could rock out!
Looks like the belt is already routed around the shaft and frame .
If you run it in the water put in a bulge pump
Water does get in you can pump it out.
Also might be easier to do. Some snow machines use a starter motor to reverse the drive. Just add a button and a starter motor to the main shaft. Could also use a small winch
Add two hydro drives
Would steer a lot better
Man what a score Taryl
this design is something like to old bobcat skid steer loaders.
That is a groovy machine, it would be worth a pretty penny over here in “good old England” 😂
Yeah for hit & runs,making sure of it.....scrambled 🤣
That's about what it's worth here in the States
If you run the center tires at a higher pressure than the end tires it will steer "better". Im glad you tried it on blacktop. That demonstrates a tendency to steer like a supertanker.
Yea I had a 8 wheel Argo and ran the middle 4 tyers a bit higher psi.
Might wanna think about a sump pump, if your going to take it in the water, they fill up fast!! Lol awsome free find keep up the great videos 👍👍
Taryl how do you expose of the old varnish fuel you encounter?
Add a tow hitch and a little red wagon for slap nuts slippers!!
Great video as usual Taryl. Can't wait to see the next one on the Scrambler..
