Can I Fix This Obsolete BLOWN UP Transmission? Let's Find Out

  • In part 3 of Taryl's Heald Hauler restoration, Taryl goes through the transmission he done blew up in part 2. He was hot-rodding it pretty hard when it gave loose and stopped moving forward. It would drive in reverse though so that tells Taryl something must be sheared or snapped inside. Can this old obsolete transmission be fixed?? Or will he have to try and hunt one down on the interscreen for a small fortune? Check it out here streaming now. And as always... There's Your Dinner!!

    When you had it on two wheels and came down(hammered it hard), you shock loaded the drive train. That's what shattered the woodruff key. Hey, it did its job! So what, GOTA HAVE FUN.

    Taryl have you ever fix a high and low transmission on a Sears Craftsman lawn tractor maybe your model 1970 -1980 ? They want to have I broke a tooth off of the reverse called I believe because when I back up it jumps like it's out of gear or not in gear only does it in reverse and high and low range😮 thanks for all your videos they are very educational I worked on this stuff since I was 11 I'm 66 now. 😂

    I have a '74 Simplicity 10 HP 3-speed manual tractor, and after rebuilding the transmission, bevel gear box, and axle 20 years ago now, I consciously try not to abuse the tractor. Too many unobtainable parts and I don't know if I could find another donor transmission. Glad to see this was only a key. That transmission looks pretty well designed.

    I have a VT-840 Super Bronc that has a HM80 Tecumseh in it with a 40 series Comet torque converter in it. It used to be a VT-812 with a 30 series torque converter in it, but it was too many horses for the 30 series torque converter. I like it much better after that improvement. I bought it and put it together in about 1980. We also have a Super Tryke that had a 11hp Briggs until the plastic governor gear broke. The weights that were on the governor then broke the piston skirt off and went through the timing gears creating much carnage. I decided to repower the tryke with a 13hp Honda clone and have been very happy with it. We still use them both around our dairy farm. Ron Kimball used to work for Carl Heald. He started a company called Power Tec that sold many parts for them. I have bought parts from him, but I do not know if he still does or not. Ron told me he helped nail the doors shut when Carl Heald closed.

      @MatthewHolevinski ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Martin, I have basically the same hauler as Taryl, except mine has the dump truck bed thing. I am not a mechanic, but when I opened my comet fnr it looks like a nuclear bomb went off inside, I wish it was just a key. All the gears are chewed up beyond recognition and all the planetaries in that differential thing are in millions of little pieces. You wouldn't happen to know what I should look for to replace it with would you? The original motor is long gone and someone scabbed in one of those predator vc660(?) engines into it. I had to cut both axles(?) off just to get it out to look at it because everything was welded to every other thing.

    Well Taryl, you Hauler looks great, I have one not nearly as nice, but I'm working on it. Got it a couple of years back from someone who thought they knew what they were doing. I have to start out with a complete rewire and then move on to the drive system. The previous "mechanic" turned the rear axle around and tried to direct drive with a mini bike clutch... didn't work (LOL). Soon as I find the schematic I can start on the wiring. Now you said in your video here that you think you are done with your hauler, but you know better than that, those of us that tinker are never finished ... just takin a break...
