I was in HS back then in NYC and Sidekicks were literally everything!! I had SK3 and SK08 still have them stored. They were around $400-600 so not everyone had one. Flippin the phone to answer msgs and aims was soo fun not even when I switched to an iPhone was as fun as a SK.
I was one of the kids in NYC during Junior High and High School that never had a sidekick... I was always jealous, and I got a razr (really my moms) and I would try to show off lol but didn't come close to the sidekick
Ohhh yes. My older sibling is deaf and was the only family member on a different carrier because they had a Sidekick. I was sooo jealous, and I remember that asteroid game so well!
I had the sidekick 3 as my first working phone growing up. I remember how comfortable it was and the fun little game about a blob that was on it. I had a huge crush on this guy that rode my bus and was also my neighbor. He sat with me everyday on the way to and from school so he could play the game on my sidekick. I also got my first boyfriend while I had this phone and remember texting him on it. He had a razr and complained a lot about how long it took to type out a message. Wasn't a problem for me on my sidekick! This phone gave me a lot of good memories growing up. EDIT: the game was "bobs journey to the center of the earth" :)
Besides the Moto Razr, this is THE most desired phone of the 2000s. iPhone or Samsung will never reach this amount of hype and I wish somehow they bring this back with modern functionality.
@@thatgadgetgirl That's one thing I wish I'd been able to touch on - the data plans really helped sell this thing. $20 for unlimited messaging and data on T-Mobile ... very easy to understand, and a lot of value there.
The last model sidekick was actually made by samsung. I had that one, and while the software was utter crap(and they knew it) I liked the hardware better than any of the other sidekicks.
I loved my sidekick 😭😩 I had that green one, I remember getting my dear John letter from T-Mobile saying they would no longer be carrying the sidekick and I just couldn’t move on 🥺😂
Got one from day one and it was a disappointment from then aside from the new Minecraft Pocket Edition that was an XP exclusive when it first came out It only went up to 2.3.3 Gingerbread and Sony promised a 4.X update on it but then cancelled it, leaving lots of modern 4+ apps unsupported It also came with an OnLive trial which was really neat at the time, playing PC quality games wherever I went. I ditched it for a Lumina 900 since it had a multi core cpu, LTE, and a godlike Carl Ziess camera
Oh man, I remember these! I attended a school for the blind and deaf, in the blind half, in the mid to late 0s, and those sidekicks were EVERYWHERE among the deaf kids. I remember riding the bus to school and back every Sunday and Friday and they'd be on their sidekick all the time. I knew these things were hot for messaging, but never knew exactly what they looked like until now, as I didn't really have any deaf friends. The thing that stuck the most with me over time is the name. It's definitely catchy!
8:29 It's a 2 megapixel camera and back then I thought that it was bad but now, there's a certain beauty to those photos. like some sort of an old school retro aesthetic effect
I remember being in high school and my friends and I would all make fun of our other friends that had smartphones because they were always staring at them all day long. Oh how times have changed in the short 10 years
Right. I remember how when I was 12 (I'm 21) there was this one girl in class who said she couldn't live without her phone. At the time I shrugged her off as exaggerating, but sure enough that's how I proceeded to feel starting a couple of years after that and all the way until now. It all starts when you get your first phone that isn't absolute garbage. Now I have a $15 unlimited data and unlimited calls&texts plan (europe is just different...) and my carrier offers me 5G
@@TrigramThunder yeah, the cell company is owned and subsidized by the government. It's offset by your higher taxes, not that it matters, in the end you get the same thing, lol.
@@marcusborderlands6177 well it matters because the corporations don't get to have their way with the pricing because their customer they have to offer prices to is the government, who has more bargaining power than poor street level citizens. that way even the total that we pay via taxes is still lower than what you pay in your bill over there.
I miss my '08 everything about it, mostly the keyboard. I remember being in class and knowing every single key and not needing to look to type hahaha great memories
Same here. I could type with the phone underneath the desk without looking at it and playing the bowling game in class. It was the first online cell game I played
I used to hear about sidekicks in the uk and was so jealous. We never had them. But we had texts when pagers were still going… it’s crazy how we’re so used to globalisation now but like twenty years ago we lived so separately!
This phone running on modern versions of android would be perfect. I don't even want them to change the shape. They didn't have to change the razrs shape either. I have the new RAZR and once you open it up ya forget it's even a flip phone. The nostalgia factor isn't really there.
I remember when I was a kid I got the LG Migo phone which was intended for small children where as nowadays kids get full sized smartphones it had 4 programable speed dial buttons and an emergency button, oh and it came with a carrying case that looked like a little backpack and might have come with puffy stickers It was green and little nubs that looked like ears, I also liked its ringtones they were fun, even though it had a colorless calculator screen and didn't have great call quality it was a darling little thing.
I ended up winning a sidekick for free from a now defunct website that sold stuff that was discontinued and if you were one of the first X to buy something, yiid end up getting yours for free. This was around 2005. My sidekick was incredibly durable and just enjoyable to use. I loved a the tactile feels.
Yooo sidekick made your social life in H.S. I remember getting my first job having a sidekick and feeling like I had unlimited options dating wise AOL messenger was tinder, Facebook, instagram, twitter all rolled into one.
I remember seeing this in an episode from Zoey101 and dreaming about it ever since. Never got one and a few years back when I had work and tried looking for one, found out it was not available in the Philipines. I cried. I still dream of owning one.
I remember I really wanted a sidekick but I was on a 2 year contract with another carrier. This phone was bad ass for the time. Thanks for taking me back Mr. Mobile lol
Man, I was 13 or so when I first saw the sidekick 3. 2007. That's how uncommon sidekicks were in Europe. It was in the manager mode of NBA Live 07 my favorite game at the time. Whenever you would check your inbox in that game you had an animation of the sidekick opening and then the messages appeared on the phone screen. It also played the t-mobile jingle. I kept opening my inbox a dozen times between games, just for the cool animation. It was the closest I could get to a sidekick.
I love watching Michael genuinely enjoy making this series. It's practically tangible excitement that just radiates from the screen so obviously. SHOW US THE NOKIA TWIST ALREADY!
I remember how I loved this phone back then! I never had it, I don’t even know if it was available in my country at all - but during a certain time, you could see it in a lot of movies and TV series and it was just so cool! This felt like the perfect communications device for my generation.
loved the video. I remember the Paris Hilton sidekick hack and it was big. to be honest with Mobile apu/gpu with intergrated graphic getting better and competing with Laptops, I wouldn't be surprised is this style device comes back.
That was the golden Era of smartphones. Every company was innovating in its own way. Every company was creative. It was super fun reading news about phones. Now we just look at the specs because we know there's nothing new. Everyone is just copying whatever Apple does.
@@SDav21 True, things have changed recently but most of the time it was the opposite way around. Like ditching the headphone jack, the notch, the glass body, the non-removable battery etc...
I was part of this launch - I led the team that dev’d and operated AOL and ICQ Mobile. Fun times. We found a lot of hearing disabled folks used the Danger device and that was a great feeling.
You bring up an EXCELLENT point on being able to navigate by feel. I love my smartphone for its utility but I can't feel the touchscreen keyboard. A lot of muscle memory is missing when typing and I never realized how much I missed that.
The N95 8GB was released after the first iPhone but the original N95 was released a bit before the iPhone. But the N95 and N95 8GB had a lot of features that the first iPhone didn't have, for example 3rd party apps and games (iPhone didn't have the App Store until 2008), multitasking, video recording, a lot better camera, front facing camera, GPS, 3G, WiFi hotspot, MicroSD card slot (in the older N95, the 8GB didn't have it), TV-out, file manager, ability to send files with bluetooth, MMS, infrared. The first iPhone had really limited features until the App Store was opened on July 10, 2008 and even then it didn't have some of the features that the N95 had.
I remember stalking gsmarena in those times. The N95 was def a king of its time. Not sure it falls under the 'fun' category. That would go to the the N90 with its swivel camcorder like form factor
huh that's weird, I know my dad owned the Sidekick 2 in 2004 and we live in Germany. Might be imported tho and I was only 4 years old so what do I know.
Not true. Sidekick 3 and Slide were both released here in the UK. I bought the 3 in the T-Mobile store on Corporation Street here in Birmingham in early 2007.
it was a phone every teen and twenty year old had back in the day in new york city! It was the fidget spinner of opening and closing to writing text messages!
@@TheVioletReality I was obsessed with this in 2008 and remember looking up if I could buy them in the UK, and nothing came up about that! Argh! I would totally have gotten one!
@@kaitlyn__L You may have ever so slightly missed the boat. I ended up doing a little bit of promo for the Sidekick UK team, but the long and short of it is that there was only ever very limited stock. Right after I bought the SK3, my friend was so impressed that he immediately picked one up in Worcester. It wasn't on display and he was told that it was last one they had and T-Mobile as a whole in the UK wouldn't be getting more. That was early 2007. Then, the Sidekick Slide was released here around Spring of 2008. Again, very little promo and very little stock. One big problem was that for some reason, UK model Sidekicks did not have MSN Messenger despite it being the most popular messenger here. They did have AIM and Yahoo, but the lack of MSN was a big frustration and the lack of promo. They never released another Sidekick here after that, even though there were a couple more models released in the US.
i had a sidekick 2 and 3 from 2005 - 2010 (cause the service was discontinued for it in Germany, unfortunately) and i still long for it, to this day. it was the best and most FUN phones i ever had!
Something that i always wanted back when phones were getting big was this phone right here. This was always the phone that if you had it, you were just about the epitome of “cool” because you could message on the go and all that jazz. I had a BB device personally then a Palm and that was really just because of the network i was on (Verizon). Loved this format and would think that if it were to come back, it would be one that would be welcomed by a lot of people that remember these days of the “fun” phones.
I had several sidekicks growing up with my first being the sidekick iD. I loved being able to switch the bumpers. Then I had the LX and the slide. I will forever cherish those phones.
I remember getting a secondhand iD as my first sidekick and not even realizing they had colored bumpers until after I upgraded it. The person I bought it from only sold me the phone.
I could type blindfolded behind my back with this thing... Best phone ever for a tech teen of the era. Besides the razor this is my top 5 childhood phones
Honnestly, this is a form factor I would love to see coming back. I miss buttons and I hate typing on a tactile screen. A Sidekick 2 or 3 with a larger screen, better hardware, cameras, modern Android OS with a custom launcher. I'd throw a lot of money for it.
I honestly need these designs to come back. I need that full qwerty keyboard back and the roller ball. I would kill for them to come out with an updated design for this era of technology
I had the sidekick 2008 and I loved that phone soooo stinking much. the swivel screen is iconic and i really loved the backlit rollerball navigation. it flashed different colors when the phone rang which i still think is a cute novelty.
I remember when I had the 3 and instantly loved it! still have it. LX came out and fell in love with it! that is what made me buy the the HTC G1 and ive been android user thanks to the sidekick! Now im rocking the galaxy s22 Ultra
I’m so glad to have lived in this era and actually used several of these as daily drivers, the 2008 fake leather back and glossy front one with lights on the corners was my last one... I could tell the quality was going down
I owned an original sidekick (color version) and it was the best. Better than any other one released imo. It was what I consider to be a real first smart phone. Thanks for the review it brought back great memories.
"Phones of 2021 have just four buttons and are $1,000." That's what I'd want to tell this to everyone in that time period just to blow their minds, lol.
The 3 was awesome but my favorite was by far the LX. Uhg it was so sleek and the light up shoulder buttons that complimented notifications. I loved it. I miss physical keyboard devices so much. I remember one particular stand out model that I was obsessed with was the Samsung "Alias". Flip phone that was able to be flipped in either portrait or landscape orientation. So cool.
Wait until 20 years later Vintage Reviewer : oh so here is a 2 decade old mobile which brand you cannot recognise because each one looked pretty similar and cliched hardware and software. Companies purposely released slightly upgraded software specs one by one after few months in next model only to stay in market and keep the competition going on! And yes, even a 2 month old smartphone would feel like dated!.. So the specs are pretty cliched, finger censor, face id, bazel less display, and oh look bunch of cameras at the back! Haha how primitive! Companies cashed out big fortune on this spec i must say!

If you haven't seen SpongeBob I am pretty sure you'd laugh until your sides hurt or you had milk running out your nose. Especially the epide where SpongeBob and Patrick go Camping. Or the episode where Sponge tells SquidWard to start using his imagination. SquidWard says to himself get it together SquidWard....do I really believe if I pretend to drive a race that I will suddenly start hearing noises. Because SpongeBob and Patrick ordered a giant new Television and they threw the T.V. away. Squidward's like let me get this straight, you two odered a giant T.V. just so you could play in the box. SquidWard asked if he could have the T.V. so SpongeBob said yes. SquidWard get upset because the only thing that is on T.V. is shows about boxes.

Still till this day SpongeBob is one of the funniest shows on Television and I believe it was made when my step brother Jacob was born in 1999.
The away msgs 😭
8:31 those photos are gorgeous, they look like vintage analog
yeah print those out on a z-ink sticker and they'd actually look pretty killer.
I was actually surprised at the quality for that time period. They weren't too shabby.
@@josiahstearns9615 nokia had way better photos even before 2007
The sheer quality of Michael's writing blows me away. This is not just another tech video, this is art.
I miss having an actual keyboard on a phone.
Same!

Me too :(
Me too!!!
The bună one
I had the Samsung Sidekick 4G and it was Amazing
@@thatgadgetgirl I still use the MSN messenger tone for notifications on all my devices.
Ahhhh, those were the days.
@@thatgadgetgirl That's one thing I wish I'd been able to touch on - the data plans really helped sell this thing. $20 for unlimited messaging and data on T-Mobile ... very easy to understand, and a lot of value there.
I had the SLVR because at the time I wanted a candybar phone vs flip
The last model sidekick was actually made by samsung. I had that one, and while the software was utter crap(and they knew it) I liked the hardware better than any of the other sidekicks.
I loved my sidekick 😭😩 I had that green one, I remember getting my dear John letter from T-Mobile saying they would no longer be carrying the sidekick and I just couldn’t move on 🥺😂
I remember that moment....I was 12...I cried lol
Xperia Play should be a phone that's included in this series
A bit too modern for this series perhaps.
Got one from day one and it was a disappointment from then aside from the new Minecraft Pocket Edition that was an XP exclusive when it first came out
It only went up to 2.3.3 Gingerbread and Sony promised a 4.X update on it but then cancelled it, leaving lots of modern 4+ apps unsupported
It also came with an OnLive trial which was really neat at the time, playing PC quality games wherever I went.
I ditched it for a Lumina 900 since it had a multi core cpu, LTE, and a godlike Carl Ziess camera
Naah, Xperia X1 was the real deal
@@iLife64 Android 4 ICS got leaked for it so it technically could be installed. I had one and I rooted it on day 1 after it arrived.
@@peteT269 Nah, it's a pretty good candidate for the series. Perhaps he could make gaming mobile series.
Thank you for making this!! I love sidekick!!!

I work at T-Mobile and over this past summer some guy came in with a Dwyane Wade Miami Heat Sidekick. Man was holding onto a relic.
I used to hear about sidekicks in the uk and was so jealous. We never had them. But we had texts when pagers were still going… it’s crazy how we’re so used to globalisation now but like twenty years ago we lived so separately!
I feel like these could make a decent come back like the the Moto Razr.
Sounds like one of those Firefly gimmicks
They should bring it back, make it more powerful but keep the original design! I would buy it 💯
I ended up winning a sidekick for free from a now defunct website that sold stuff that was discontinued and if you were one of the first X to buy something, yiid end up getting yours for free. This was around 2005.
My sidekick was incredibly durable and just enjoyable to use. I loved a the tactile feels.
"don't act like this isn't sexy, i know it is" instantly liked the video
Called it out, instantly liked the comment
You weren't SHT if you didn't have a sidekick in high school
I guess I was the lame one. I had a Treo 755p. I still loved the thing, though.
I had a Marbl 😐 and I would have been happy just to have a wannabe Sidekick, like the Switchback
RBR Did you mean to say smartphone?Sidekicks were a type of cell phone.

I swear I only think of Zoey 101 every time I see one these 😂
XXXTentacion lol same
These videos are so great, really takes me back to my youth during the aughts. This is now one of my favorite tech channels, great stuff Michael! ✨
I remember I really wanted a sidekick but I was on a 2 year contract with another carrier. This phone was bad ass for the time. Thanks for taking me back Mr. Mobile lol
Well, in high school I was dying to even lay my hands on one of these. It's a bummer Sidekick wasn't common in EU.
I really wanted one too... but living in Europe as well...
My older sisters had sidekicks back in 2009 and 2010. Those phones were so popular back in the day
early 2000's- when phones were fun
today- when phones were all giant candy bars the size of tablets
That was the golden Era of smartphones. Every company was innovating in its own way. Every company was creative. It was super fun reading news about phones. Now we just look at the specs because we know there's nothing new. Everyone is just copying whatever Apple does.
@@mustafaoliwy282 Who's copying apple? These days it's apple copying everyone else.
@@SDav21 True, things have changed recently but most of the time it was the opposite way around. Like ditching the headphone jack, the notch, the glass body, the non-removable battery etc...

And before JerryRigEverything and a user I hate which I won't mention…
I was part of this launch - I led the team that dev’d and operated AOL and ICQ Mobile. Fun times. We found a lot of hearing disabled folks used the Danger device and that was a great feeling.
Thank you 🙏🏾
I like how this man pretend laughs on his phone at the begining as if someone told him a dirty joke. That superb acting right there sir.
The sidekick 3 still has, imo, the best physical keyboard to ever grace a mobile device.
You bring up an EXCELLENT point on being able to navigate by feel. I love my smartphone for its utility but I can't feel the touchscreen keyboard. A lot of muscle memory is missing when typing and I never realized how much I missed that.
Review the Nokia N95 8gb. That phone was crushing the iPhone in so many ways.
n97 gang
The n95 came out before the iPhone existed and was in no way better. The e61 maybe, that's what I chose.
@@mz-pv9ki used to owned one, it was awful because it keep running out of RAM, but the keyboard is great though
I remember stalking gsmarena in those times. The N95 was def a king of its time.
Not sure it falls under the 'fun' category.
That would go to the the N90 with its swivel camcorder like form factor
We didn’t have this phone in Europe - can’t wait to learn what all that hype is about!
huh that's weird, I know my dad owned the Sidekick 2 in 2004 and we live in Germany.
I remember wanting one of these so bad when I was in middle school.
Brooo, it's time this series became a TH-cam original or at least an official TH-cam partner. I could watch this stuff all day.

The Nostalgia from this phone hit me so hard that I wished I was born in the past again!
Honnestly, this is a form factor I would love to see coming back.
I miss buttons and I hate typing on a tactile screen.
A Sidekick 2 or 3 with a larger screen, better hardware, cameras, modern Android OS with a custom launcher. I'd throw a lot of money for it.
if you want a phone with a keyboard check out the F(x)tec Pro1 X
I honestly need these designs to come back. I need that full qwerty keyboard back and the roller ball. I would kill for them to come out with an updated design for this era of technology

I've been waiting for when phones were fun episode like in forever. I love this series!!
I live in New Zealand and I got my hands on the Samsung sidekick G4, it was awsome!
So cool.
Would love to see a modern one made for 2022 or 2023 I wonder how well it'd do with all the modern capabilities and technology?
I remember these were the coolest phones to own. Even when the iPhone made its debut, the Sidekick was still a favorite.
The sidekick was the best phone ever! Such nostalgia!
A haunting! You were probably a different character in every episode like everyone else!
My friend used to have the Tony hawk version back in high school. Damn I miss those days. :')

Vintage Reviewer : oh so here is a 2 decade old mobile which brand you cannot recognise because each one looked pretty similar and cliched hardware and software.
