- After a little over 2 years of ownership, we decided to sell our 2014 Tesla Model S. In this video we detail the issues that lead to our decision.

Man after dealing with coolant leaks and transmission issue past month on dodge and ford this car sounds like a dream come true I’m buying one now!!!!
It sounds like you never had a Lexus before.
FYI-I have a 2015 Model S and on the climate control settings you can use Dog Mode or Camp Mode to keep the climate on while not in the vehicle. Should be the same for MCU1 and MCU2 vehicles.
I never noticed those modes in ours. Saw someone with that activated on their Model 3 and thought it might be a solution, but again seems like more steps than should really be necessary
@@EVeverything You can select from the phone app and temperature you want (no "steps") your car interior to never excide. Your Tesla will then regulate that maximum temperature or simply maintain the temperature you chose on the phone app. You missed out on understanding your car
A Nissan leaf is definitely more your style.
Auto door handle presenting can be tuned off via the MCU on the model S, I changed mine to not present when the fob is close.
Indeed, and I did enable that feature after I got tired of them presenting every time I walked to my other car in the garage. The simpler approach they have taken with the Model 3 & Y handles is a simplified improvement imo.
Well, got your point. But you have to keep in mind, as you said, it was just 2 years in production. Therefore such problems are expectable on that vehicle. In my case, I own 2015 S85D, bought it 2 years ago with 200k km. Now I'm on 250k km. So obviously I have had some issues with the car which needed to be solved and there're still some pending. All of those issues I'd consider to be completely ok for that mileage. But they're still rather cosmetic, nothing major so far. And those are possible to be solved quite cheap as there's already wide 3rd party shops around selling parts for those cars. For example I have solved replacement of almost all susp arms for about 1k USD including labour. So if you don't mind to tinker with you car a bit and also searching around Internet for parts and info, then it might be great choice with high added value as it's a spacious safe family car with lots of even today cool features, free SuC, (after 100kWh upgrade) really great range and fast charging which is still better then most of cars nowadays being sold on the market. If you don't want to take a care of it, you just need something for transport from A to B without any bother, you should definitely go for a newer car covered by warranty. Nevertheless there've been many sad stories about new cars all famous brands which likely spent more time at the service then serving their owners ;)
Aw, I'm sorry you had to sell your Model S. But yeah... I feel your pain about the repairs. Even though I haven't had a repair in over a year, I'm afraid to tell my wife if anything else goes wrong. :) Still planning to get my MCU upgraded next month. That will take care of my 3G to 5G modem exchange, as well as improving response time.
The prices of used Teslae is starting to come down again, so you might want to consider a newer Model S (perhaps a 2017-2019). The door handle motor issue was resolved with a new design (I got to see the technician replace mine and the new motor assembly has MUCH better engineering).
It is nice to see the prices coming back down on used Teslas. Even new models like the Y got price drops too, I believe. My next Tesla is still most likely a Cybertruck (depending on price changes) or possibly a Model Y if they bring back the RWD version that was available briefly.
My boss is willing to sell me his 2013 model s 60 with 59k miles for $15k and I’m now wondering if it’s a good idea. He has taken good care of it but I don’t think he’s had to replace the door handles or mcu
That's a pretty rad deal! If it doesn't have the air suspension that's one less thing to worry about having issues with. You may just want to replace the MCU on your own, or at least the modem since it doesn't support anything newer than 3G connectivity.

If you wanted it on. Just leave your phone in the car. It will never shut off. But maybe the 2014 is like that. My model 3 will stay on in that case.
Last year when I saw the skyrocketing prices of used teslas I sold my beloved 2014 p85. It’s as a great car I miss the sunroof but I saw the rising out of pocket out of warranty costs coming and the battery would now be out of warranty. I had 121,000 miles on it and it was tagged as “previously repaired “. For a bumper replacement prior to my ownership. So I sold it very quickly to a guy that flew in and drive it home. I ordered a model Y last year at lower prices and got it in less than a month because someone backed out hoping for a tax break. Yay for me bi got a registration break. 5 years $100 total! Now my job has changed and I do r drive much at all. My wife got a Mini Cooper SE. again great timing. We got the base model still eligible for the $7500 tax break before they removed it from the ordering page. Anyway. I struggle with (should I keep the Y?). Carvana will give me $5 k more than I spent after taxes. And personal sales would get more. But what would I get ? I couldn’t pay the prices for a Y today
Depends on your needs, but if you could sell the Y for MORE than you paid and make it work with just the Mini that could work out well. We are planning to stay with just the one vehicle for now, but it is an SUV and might be more of a struggle with one car that is also small. But we have kids so, again, depends on your needs.
@@EVeverything the problem is, I love the Y for it's towing hitch.. i use it every weekend to haul my big ebike around, and of course for more than 2 people and a dog it's perfect. we also have a gas volvo Wagon, but I really am saving that for my son, who will be driving soon. or maybe I'll get him an electric car too :) I am leaning towards keeping the Y, and keeping it for a very long time.
@@Chrisb8s sound like you really like the Y, so you should keep it. Good to hear someone actually uses their tow hitch, unlike myself who has one on my Outlander PHEV and keeps trying to think of anything beyond a bike rack to use it for.
We decided that we didn't want to sell our Y because of it being the safest vehicle out for our family and nothing compares

@@EVeverything I'm hoping by the time they tell me I can order mine, the price will have come down. Just hoping, but my intention was to pay for it with Tesla stock. Stock needs to hit higher to cover the extra 20K because I would not pay that much otherwise.
To put things into perspective, a 2010 Jaguar XFR key fob is over $400.00. Oil change is $300-600. Tires are $400/wheel and can’t be rotated. Brakes are over $300 wheel. These are mostly maintenance. The repairs are far worse. Cam cover gaskets and spark plugs cost thousands of dollars (require removal of the Supercharger and coolant pipes), same with water pump.
Having never owned a luxury vehicle, I assume those costs are inflated to fit the budgets of high-income buyers rather than actual cost of services? Not sure why oil would cost so much more in a comparable vehicle.
@@EVeverything Your correct--high repairs costs are tied to 'luxury image' of the car. As in my neighbor with the last year of the Caddy pick up truck. Its a plain Ford 250 {or perhaps 150} with 'tinsel and glitter'. For ONE headlamp bulb it was $250.00USD. They had to pull the entire front parts off and get a fancy arese bulb to do the repairs. Luxury cars have the WORST reliability ratings { for ICE cars].

Do you regret purchasing the Model S?
Wouldn't say I totally regret, bc it was a little sad when we sold it and saw it being driven off. But maybe a newer Tesla, although the price for a new S or X is out of the question for our family. Definitely don't want this video to reflect badly on Tesla, just more a of a cautionary tale for buying a 7 year old car that was only 2 or so years into its model production.
He has successfully dissuaded me from getting a used Tesla after claiming he's not putting down Tesla
Did you buy your model S from Tesla? I ask because Tesla replaced my 12v battery under the Tesla used warranty. I have been impressed what they're willing to replace under warranty. All other cars I've purchased there's no where near as many things that they'll replace 😅👍
No, did not buy from Tesla. It was a better deal than what I could find on offer from Tesla's used inventory, but of course you lose out on an extended warranty coverage. Seems so long ago with how expensive used cars are now.
@@EVeverything lol i bet the used prices back then seem cheap compared to how they are now. I got mine at an ok price nothing amazing but as soon as I bought mine the prices went up again so all in all still a good deal! Yeah without the Tesla Used Warranty i'd be screwed haha!
Stumbled across your channel. Great video and reasons for your selling. I'm looking into Teslas and have seriously reconsidered now for another EV.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Certainly don't want to dissuade someone from getting a used Tesla, but perhaps not just one as old as mine that is out of warranty. I think if you purchase used from Tesla you get the option for an extended warranty. As we consider getting a 2nd vehicle, I'm honestly leaning towards getting another LEAF (would be our third!) or a BMW i3 as they have very reasonable used prices.
This sounds like nothing compared to the up keep on modern complicated cars. I have a 2015 P90 Ludicrous + and it is the fastest car I have every driven and I have never had a problem with anything. I have a Maserati Quattroporte and a new key fob is $1800 and $900 to replace the spark plugs etc.....I have a BMW and the electric water pump is $1100.
You have all 3 of these cars currently? Regardless, yes the up-keep was a little worrisome in our experience without warranty coverage. Nothing about it not being fast, which it was certainly the fastest of the cars we'd owned up to that point.
I have a Chevrolet volt 2014 no problem at all ...but i want to buy a tesla model S 2013 ....what do you think???
If your Volt is covering most or all of your daily driving then I'd say stick with it. Maybe a more logical upgrade for you would be the 2nd gen Volt, which we used to own, and could take us well over 50 miles on battery power alone.

I just purchased a used 2014 Tesla Model S P85D for $25,000...the car is awesome to drive!. My girlfriend giggles every time I accelerate and snap her head back into the headrest. Only issues so far is a busted charge port door and some peeling of the rubber around the sunroof. Best car ever!

We have a 2012 signature s and i feel like the same, like it is jinxed. We never had such problems as we have had with the tesla and it makes me not want to drive it. Also we keep wanting to sell and then something comes up that we have to fix. We tried to do the air suspension ourselves and did one half and then luckily a local shop did the other, but it is still not straightening out. So we will have to take it to tesla and then hopefully we can sell after that. The screen we have replaced a couple of times. It eats tires. Ours also turns off if i am sitting in the passenger seat and my hubs goes out and does an errand. This car is cursed and it has felt like a weight. I can’t wait to get rid of this weight off our shoulders that it has been. We should have sold it in 2020 when they were going for 30k. Now we will be lucky to sell for 15k. Also insurance is more and tabs/registration is a lot more than our jeep.

I currently own a 2018 model 3 LR, but I want a model s as well. I also have that issue with wanting to leave the climate control on but quite frankly I never even tried dog mode.
Do you recommend the used model s or not even worth it?
I wouldn't discourage anyone getting a used Model S, even an older one like our 2014. But for the reasons I mention in the video, just be prepared for things to go wrong and assess your ability to get to a Tesla service center. I honestly miss the car in many ways, but we ultimately replaced it with a 2013 LEAF of all things. Sometimes functionality and steadfast reliability comes out on top.

@@sidneyke I think that's what lead me back to the Nissan LEAF. A not entirely remarkable car, but never had any mechanical issues and gets me where I need to go.
Warranty?
Warranty ran out a year or so before we sold it. If you buy used direct from Tesla I believe you get extended warranty options.
Have you gotten your Cybertruck yet or given up?
I've kind of lost interest at this point. Seen a few in the wild and don't know that it comes across any less polarizing in-person. Also after the price hikes it's not the car I can afford anymore. I'm more excited about the Kia EV9 these days, ha!

I am curious, after 2 years was your range still at $258 mi or did it decrease significantly?
If I recall, I think it was down to 250 or maybe even just below by the time we sold it. So steady degradation, but mileage was still under 60K.

Quite possibly. It's more a cautionary tale to folks like me that were drawn in by owning a Model S at sub-$35K. I wouldn't hesitate on a new Model 3 or Y, so not trying to bash the Tesla brand.
There’s a sucker born every minute, and those suckers buy early Model S vehicles. They are ticking time bombs that will financially sink those suckers.
Sounds like you had a gremlin in your Tesla? A lot of the others online are all good.
Hope you have a better experience. I wouldn't want to dissuade anyone from buying a used Tesla, maybe just not the very oldest model years.
If you have an old - and really the first 100% new Tesla model…. You are going to have issues.
Yeah, but it did only have 41K miles on it when we bought in 2019. It really was a good car, just gets scary being out of warranty.

Thanks for the informative video! I was considering to buy a used Tesla Model S from 2015 with free supercharging, but I have changed my mind after watching your video and I going for a 2018 Honda Civic in diesel, as Hondas are well known for their great reliability as well as other Japanese cars.
Well, I'd love to have heard you bought another electric or plug-in car. Certainly hope my Tesla experience doesn't sour people on the EV experience overall.
@@EVeverything I would say that Europe is not ready for EVs yet. Traveling 300km and then wait 45-60 minutes to charge the car is not what I am cosidering comfortable traveling. ✌️
@@slivkask8329 my understanding is Europe is even more conducive, with shorter traveling distances and more plentiful charging stations. I'm beginning to suspect you were never really in the market for an EV and are just here to dissuade people, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Bold choice with a 2014. I wouldn't go that old with a tesla. Model S was first released in 2012 and had a slew of issues in those first few years
Yeah, lesson learned. Last year I got a 2013 Nissan LEAF with the same concerns, but aside from some battery degradation it's just like my 2015 I had before.

I’m surprised you’d even want another Tesla after all the massive issues they’ve been facing across the board. They haven’t won my trust just watching all the malfunctions they keep having and how awful Elon is as a person.
I guess I don't keep up with their issues or any of Elon's attention-getting antics. If they make a quality product, I'd likely support it. But with so much competition, they're going to have to up the quality and appeal of their vehicles to maintain what up until now has been a massive lead in the EV space. Honestly, I'm more excited about something like the VW ID. Buzz than pretty much anything else.
Dude, the problem isn't the car - you are helpless. The recall issues and anomalies of the Model S are well publicized and known, easy to know about before buying. So, you damage the rear door and take that to mean the car is cursed? Interesting.
