Whiskey Myers rock, i was lucky to see them play in a relatively small venue and it was awesome. Felt like they played forever. When they played this song the entire vibe in the place changed really a wild experience. Should check out some of their other music.

Well done keeping us guitar players in mind with the breakdown, but also making sure to touch on the subject of the song. It makes me listen to lyrics a lot more carefully and appreciate music on many different levels rather than just a killer guitar solo or riff.

I feel like the concurrent harmonica and lead guitar adds a purposeful dissonance at that point in the song. It reflects the contradiction and chaos of the subject’s life. “I pray for your life/as it slowly takes you to your death…laughing through the tears/as you slowly slip away”. A violent and unpleasant clash of life and death augmented by the discordant music. I wonder if the studio version is recorded that way too. I have actually only heard a haunting and beautiful cover of this song by Laurah Louisa here on TH-cam. Brilliant song; thanks for unpacking it for us all.
This channel is amazing as is guitar gate itself..... But there's been a lot of really deep music on here and music heals wounds and makes us but feel alone..... I think ( and clearly I could be way off) when he says he sees her through a broken window it's acknowledgment of her brokenness but follows it with a different point of view indicating he sees the beautiful person and potential she has and it eats him inside he's unable to make her see herself the way he sees her , he's unable to save her from her demons . But if only she loved herself the way he loved her. Just my take
Broken window refers to smoking crack it’s a term used on poor neighborhoods, so I can see why it’s called broken window serenade, it’s dedicated to someone suffering from drug addiction
I am not sure how I came across this video, but I did. I’ve never looked up taking guitar lessons or anything regarding the guitar. I’ve always wanted to learn how to play, but never have. I saw that it mentioned whiskey Myers and something about your reaction to it. I also never knew who Whiskey Myers was, and a few years back without any intention I accidentally ran into them. I was up in Boston and went to a little show that they had at a hole in the wall venue just on a random night when I had nothing to do and took a chance not knowing anything about the band or the music. I became a fan of the music from that moment on. So now a few laters here I am and I watch your video to see what this reaction was about and when I didn’t notice anything at first I thought well maybe I was just hopeful. But then there it was at the end of your video of the message that you gave. I have two brothers and sister and then me being the one on the other side feeling the pain and hurting for them as I lost my sister a few years back to addiction and then a few years later my brother. I have one brother left who is need of great help. There is so much to the story I could share. So your message really struck a chord with me and how it so truly feels. I can’t emphasize that feeling enough.

They probably wanted you to "REACT" to the "Album Version" -- there's a lot more going on in that version with the harp and bass. But it's still the same tune. Agree on other comments - they are GREAT LIVE - and have way more upbeat songs. This is their most commercial.

Michael, while this acoustic version is a good example of their song writing it is not representative of the band. They are a 7 piece outfit and THEY ROCK! Pick ANY of the official videos and you'll get a totally different impression of the band.
This is why you should never record an acoustic guitar without an external mic focused on the 12th fret.....get the real sound otherwise you get this electric processing sound.
This is why Gibsons are so popular live. They can sound sorta dead at home, but have fewer overtones. My Mahogany bodied Taylor does well with this, but there’s a certain overtone like this that pops up in the upper midrange if I throw on certain pedals.
The reason is that it's not his guitar. The night before this recording, the bands trailer with all their instruments got stolen. So he had to use a random guitar.

If you're looking for another beautiful song written from the perspective an addict's loved one, I highly recommend O' Sister by City and Colour. As a former addict myself, I have a hard time making it through the entire song. I can deal with the pain and sorrow I've brought upon myself, but thinking about what it has done to my friends and family is rough.
As an addict that's been clean from a 15 year opiate addiction for 12 years it took me a long time to learn that my cycle of self destruction was largely because of my inability to forgive myself for my shortcomings or accept forgiveness from the people who loved me. I don't know if everyone else has this issue but learning true forgiveness was a turning point in my life . My heart truly hurts for anyone who is suffering and I pray they learn to know that they are loved .

The acoustic version is great but to me the studio version is so damn busy in the background it drowns out the power of the lyrics and the melody. I much prefer the acoustic. So clean and good. Just my opinion.

For the record this song is based on a true story. The Timeout I believe has since closed but it was a real place as well.
