I played the opening Fantasia my senior year of college in 1981 as the Recessional after a Sunday service. One of the College administrators said “ It was loud”. And I thought “ I HOPE so!”

Its suposed to be LOUD. I remember reading that the church elders told Bach that it was too radical.

That reminds me of the late Virgil Fox, playing at The Filmore East, telling the audience "...if you're not prepared to have a happening, MOVE BACK!" He played a Rodgers touring organ with, he said, 144 speakers.

And don't forget, also, the fourth line, which are the pedals. The organ is, without a doubt, a very complex instrument.

My goodness, this piece sure did stir up the comments. As someone fortunate to have attended the performance let me say it was wonderful. The organ & acoustics complimented Jonathan's orchestral transcriptions as well as both German & French pieces. I was surprised myself that I selected this Bach as my favorite of the evening. On reflection I think the aforementioned acoustics as well as the registrations took it to new heights. Plus I'm quite fond of the chord progressions. Sometimes one just needs to hear the Master, played by a master, on a masterful instrument. Thank you for posting so I can relive the experience.

This is probably my fourth comment! I watched Mass from The National Shrine, Washington DC this evening and this G Minor Fugue was played as the postlude. I immediately felt that I needed to re-visit Jonathan's performance at St Mary's Cathedral - which is absolutely tiny compared to The National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. Jonathan's performance (credit to Tom's audio/visual/recording skills) is my all time favourite recording of this majestic work. Of course, none of this would have been possible were it not for the great the organ-builder, himself - the late, Kenneth Tickell, RIP!

Wonderful performance and interpretation! The relatively dry acoustics of the space help to keep the crystal clear lines so skillfully delineated by Mr. Scott from being muddied. Magnificent! And keeping the final chord of the Fantasia in the minor, unlike many other performances, felt exactly right. Beautiful instrument as well.

This is one of the best expositions of this piece Ive heard or found anywhere!! I love it. -- you get the “rhetoric” of the piece and the drama JSB most certainly intended. I have learned and played it but the “edgy” somewhat aggressive even nature of the fantasy you absolutely nailed it! Ii wish more organists would play with “flair” like you - so impressed and kindred spirit musically!

Fantastic Jonathan! Now my favorite plating of this piece! Reason: you chose to resolve the coda in the fantasia in G Mol. L. van Doeselaar resolves in G Dur, then goes back into G Mol for the opening statement in the fugue. I don't believe Bach would have written this, although it has been recorded as such in the original literature. But Bach's students were taking dictation as he was loosing his eyesight (me also) at this period in his life. Thanks so much and God Bless, Jonathan!

Absolutely stupendous performances by Jonathan - one of our greatest organists and musicians (although I'm told that Sir Thomas Beecham could never understand how the two skills could ever be combined!). Clearly, Sir Thomas was very much mistaken. And what a perfect choice of instrument. The Tickell organ has everything in terms of clarity of speech, dynamic range and a superb full organ, which balances all voices with equal impact. The sound of the final few bars, effectively brought home on the pedal bombarde (plus I imagine a coupled en chamade Reed), was enough to blow one's socks off!! Glorious Bach.

1:40 Enharmonic modulations. This causes unusual chord sequences, extremely fresh and may be even a bit "crazy". This piece is way ahead of its time

Probably because Bach is timeless; they should have even included this one on the Voyager Golden Record! But wait, they should have included all of Bach`s creations then.
Yet pity they missed shipping back into the Eternity what (in my opinion) is the most representative for human kind: the introduction of Matthäus Passion.

Truly splendid playing and such a responsive instrument. It is so good instruments like this are still being made. Ideally suited for Bach but I suspect too quite fine for later repertoire.

I take it the 15 who have given this the 'thumbs down' include such names as Olivier Latry or others in the pantheon of World-Class Organists?

@@AsteroidTVGaming Indeed, Asteroid. I personally prefer this fugue played at this speed, maybe even a bit faster, but the slower interpretations are convincing a pleasant too.

@J. Ganz schön erbärmlich, was ? :)

If a fugue is not for you, have the good manners to leave the post but putting a thumbs down says so much about you.
