    Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
    Artists: Elena Barshai (organ)
    Like many of his colleagues J.S. Bach frequently borrowed from himself and paid tribute to other composers by transcribing their works for other instruments, For example his oeuvre for organ includes transcriptions of some instrumental concertos based on work of composers like Vivaldi.
    These release contains transcriptions of both Bach’s own concertos for solo keyboard and of instrumental concertos by Vivaldi. These works are certainly enhanced by the sonorities of the organ.
    Played by the Russian organist Elena Barshai on the Silbermann organ of Arlesheim Cathedral and the Metzler organ of the Church of St. Clara, Basle (both in Switzerland).
    Also included is an arrangement for two organs - both played by Barshai - of Bach’s Concerto for four harpsichords (which again is based on a concerto for four violins by Vivaldi).

      @Geoff G Not all of them are by Vivaldi...Concerto in G major, BWV 592 is a transcription of Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar § Violin Concerto a 8 in G major, which also exists as a transcription for solo harpsichord (BWV 592A) and the Concerto in C major, BWV 595 survives one movement also from a concerto by Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar. There's only 5 transcriptions for Organ the balance are Vivaldi's works (with some additions). J S Bach transcribed Concerti by Alessandro Marcello, Georg Phillip Telemann, Vivaldi, Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar as Solo Harpsichord transcriptions (Concerto in C major, BWV 984 contains all the movements not found in BWV 595), and Concerto in G minor, BWV 985. Some are unidentified masters.

    Not only do we hear music from the Baroque masters brightened through Bach's creative mind, but we also hear the development of Bach's musical education. Vivaldi taught Bach a great deal about theme development, melodic lines (particularly for the violin), and Italian structure. We can detect Vivaldi's influence on many of Bach's works, not least the Brandenburg Concertos. Copying Vivaldi's works was therefore not just a great honour, but also helped make his work accessible to organ students.

      @mohammedcohen ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ...I think we tend to forget that all the great composers of this age copied (with pen & paper) the works of other composers - many older than they - in much the same way as artists copied the works of the masters of their day as exercises in learning the craft. that Bach transcribed Vivaldi's string works to the keyboard shows his admiration for the composer who was 7 years his senior and his talent for the arts of both transcription and improvisation.

    • @777rogerf
      @777rogerf ปีที่แล้ว

      Various musical traditions were to Bach like different paints to the painter. As a student, Back became very familiar with music and dances from the French courts, and later with music from the Italian school, from which he integrated elements, such as rhythms and performance practices, into own original compositions and, occasionally, as a direct transcriptions (arrangements) for another instrument, as in this case.

      Risposta per J Grau. Per primo ricordiamo che il principe di Saxen era solo un dilettante, e gli si è dato l'onore di farci conoscere un suo pezzo, mettendolo all'altezza di Bach e VIVALDI, quasi in competizione. Oggi sappiamo che .il il principe sassone, procurò i concerti di Vivaldi dell'Italia. Non per questo si sospetta uno scambio involontario! Voglio ricordare che Bach, conoscendo il GRAN SUCCESSO di VIVALDI, si è chiesto come mai, e così comincio' a studiare il suo metodo, senza chiedere il permesso. Morale della favola: Bach, a sua insaputa, è.icoronato: Padre della musica, GRAZIE s un prete cattolico, che ha studiato musica nel tempio della musica. I grandi musicisti del passato hanno imparato negli istituti cristiani, prima della scissione. Mozart, chiamava l 'Italia Patria della musica.! VIVALDI merita di essere incoronato come scopritore della musica strumentale e scopritore della prima orchestra di sole donne. Questo 300 anni fa. In assoluto , il più incisivo nella musica barocca. Il titolo di Padre, lo aveva comunque

    This splendid recording of Bach organ concertos after Vivaldi suggests two comments. One, the interbreeding between Italian and German baroque music. Compared to other Bach organ works, these 12 concertos tend to be merrier, brighter, more melodic. One does not normally think of Vivaldi as an organ player, but during the XVII century the organ was prevalent in serious music. After all, Vivaldi was a priest. Second, the globalization (Europeanization) of music during the XVII and XVIII centuries, Musicians travelled, met each other, adapted novel techniques. There was a common space that transcended the new nations. From the Renaissance on, this community of the arts has remained until today.Thanks Brilliant Classics for posting.

    Brillant interpretiert. Für diese Vivaldi-Bearbeitungen J. S. Bachs ist die Silbermann-Orgel im Dom zu Arlesheim (BL) ideal. Nach dem "Kunstführer durch die Schweiz", Band 3 (1982), S. 12, ist dies die "einzige, nahezu vollständige erhaltende und spielbare Silbermann-Orgel der Schweiz. Rest. 1959-62 von O. Metzler."

    This reminds me of parts of my childhood I spent in Trier, Germany. My people took me to the Basilika there for hour long organ concertos, the ones with accompanying trumpets were my favorites. The organ there is one of the biggest and we'll known in Germany and often used for recording masterpieces. The accustom one of the best.
    I'm enjoying this recording here immensely. LOVE IT !!! Glad to have found this video.

What a wonder to find this Collection of VIVALDI Music so sumptuously transcribed for Organ , an instrument that not only memes the sonorities and BARIOLAGE of Violins but also amplifies them. Absolutely great mastery of clavier and pedal by Elena Barshai.
    There are 2 things that I truly appreciate above everything else; one is the signing of sacred music by men and boys choirs, the other is music on a “real” pipe organ.
    There are really no words to describe this magnificent interpretation of Bach pieces.

    The pedantic side of me can't resist pointing out that the original composer of BWV 592 was Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar and not Vivaldi. That doesn't detract in any way from a wonderful collection of glorious music. It's hard to think of a more enjoyable way of passing two hours.
