I feel like you're using this unit wrong. Hand mortars are a support unit and they are actually the best general sniping unit in the game. Unlike fire rockets they're effective even against generals hiding in forests since they don't get blocked much by trees, and their range is so great that you can reach the general hiding in the back without moving into range of the AI bow units. You can get hand mortars by turn 60 without much trouble due to the two libraries next to Hojo lands. By that time the AI will normally have many high level generals, which can make their armies nigh unbreakable. So in response you just recruit one hand mortar unit in each army and start off each offensive field battle by sniping those pesky generals. Since it only takes 1-2 volleys to kill a general that means you can take out multiple generals or start picking off other cavalry units. Once the hand mortar runs out of ammo, then you move in with your bows and melee units as normal. So whether hand mortars are a good unit or not depends on how much you value sniping AI generals - because they have no other use besides that. I love sniping generals, so I love the hand mortars.
Love your content! Have an idea for a video: Shogun2 provinces tier list. Literally list each province and rate them depending on various factors like money making, location, defendability etc.
I always want to use explosive units in shogun but they are not so great. But given the historic time that also makes sense. Blowing up stuff so fun though.
@@donjuanmckenzie4897 eh, they're expensive to maintain and take forever to recruit. They're definitely powerful but it's much better to have, say, 10 yari ashigari than a few explosive units even in the endgame.
@@donjuanmckenzie4897 Fire rockets cost 5 times more to recruit and twice as much in upkeep. Literally, you can have 10 yari ashigaru for the price of 2 fire rockets, and the upkeep would only be slightly higher.
I think this unit could be used in conjunction with a counter charge of your own, in the sense that you let off a hand mortar volley onto a high value enemy unit to mess with their formation prior to charging it with cav or infantry. But generally yes, these are bad because they can’t aim correctly.
Hojo hand mortars really need a mod to work in most situations, in vanilla they are barely better than bow ashigaru, not enough to justify the terrible cost-(un)effectiveness, but i really like them regardless. They suprisingly seems to work better with fire rockets support. I once got more kills on them that on most rockets unit in battle against ikko-ikki bow heavy army.
There is a great mod (if you are the type of guy who uses them) which is focused on making all the artillery units much stronger with simple changes. It makes cannons shoot grapple shots and the Hand Mortars grenades explode on impact. Is actually, quite awesome.
The fire bombs/ grenades of other units explode after a little delay (if I'm not mistaken). So my guess is that the hand mortars are coded to aim at the same place as those units, but unlike those units they explode upon impact.
Make you appreciate how FOTS allow you to mannually aim those Armstrong and Parrot guns which make you try to oneshot their enemy general across the map once battles started
I think in general, anything that shoots explosive projectiles is good against cavalry since if they get hit the slightest they die unlike infantry which gets back up
Would you consider doing appreciation posts for FOTS units as well?, perhaps one like the armstrong guns Alternatively, a donderbuss cav appreciation post would be wonderful, dismounted on walls is a marvel I'd like to see on a side note, clan overviews for the remaining FOTS clans that haven't received ones one day perhaps?
I have gained a very good appreciation for gunpowder units but even with 1 turn tech and building it can take about 15-20 turns to get these guys and I just don’t understand why I would use anything other than fire rockets or mangonels
you can build hojo multi dimensional line enemy bow sohei(prepare to use whisp arrow) Matchlock ashigaru yari Ashigaru *reserved space for matchlock ashigaru/8 Bow ashigaru *reserved space for bow sohei* Hojo hand mortar
I reckon the handmortars are way better when the enemy is hold up (example: yari ashigaru vs katana sam.) and then you let the handmortars shoot at the still standing sam, making your yari win.
This may not related to any shogun 2 stuff. Quick question mr smartdonkey, how you comment on your privated video? I've saw your latest video's pinned comment it's 5 or 6 days ago. Also ROTS Appreciation post?
I had that video unlisted for a few days waiting for approval from the sponsors, that’s when I put my pinned comment on it. Then I scheduled it to go live yesterday after that since I’m away on holiday. Well, technically I just landed back in the Netherlands but I *was* away on holiday.
hand mortars are siege unit so use it in siege battle i usually have a stack of 6 hand mortar follow the back of my army and only use them in siege battle
I guess you can use those guys only on siege battles as attacker blowing defending units on walls. With Hojo faction bonuses, you like take those guys, fire up entire castle and repair it.
The damage is really weak against constructions, it's also kinda weak against units too. 1 mortar can kill about 60-80 ashigarus or 40-60 for samurais and they are not likely to break before they can reach them. Of course they can be used when the frontline crash, but they will break your own frontline as well. For that situation, Bomb Throwers can do it with less collateral damage.

The fire rockets are good, especially in campaign where you'll mostly just be launching rockets over walls.

Kisho Ninja + Matchlock Ashigaru is fun ... but it's hard to win since both are weak in melee and outnumbered.
