If you take your cvt jeep to a mechanic , they will only change the fluid. Even the dealer will only change the pan screen filter if they find metal shavings. NO ONE will change the upper paper filter. Unfortunately that upper paper filter is VERY IMPORTANT to change. Even if nothing else was done here, JUST changing the upper filter would make a big difference in transmission operation, even with dirty fluid. The fluid will not cool or flow properly if that paper filter is clogged.
Happend to me I was cheap and re used the old fliter after cleaning it with brake cleaner, the transmission was making a humming noise, took it out and it was super dirty put new one and now there is no noise
@real93love I would think since the fluid is in the pan and filter at top of tranny, it would be no problem to change the little filter. I have not done it that way myself just saying in theory it could be done.
That little cartridge filter looks really similar to the one that is found in a lot of CVTs up on the side. It is usually inside a small housing on the side of the transmission and not everyone realizes that it is there.
That's what I have heard that not many know about the second filter. That filter gets pretty dirty so it is a good maintenance to change it every once in awhile.👍
@@crazybillsgarage If you have the metal gasket ring make sure it stays in place or you will get a really nasty surprise when you start the vehicle the next time. It will be a nasty fluid mess!
So how did it run after the oil change? I’m planning on doing this for my 07 caliber tomorrow. It’s my parts runner for my semi truck, and at the moment I can’t drive it for more then an hour without the transmission over heating and the car forcing itself into limp mode 😅
The car manufacturers say that a CVT doesn't do as much as a normal gear transmission and say there good for at least 60 to 80 thousand miles. But I personally would change mine half of what they say with the filters. I don't put much stock in what they recommend, if you keep it clean then it will naturally last longer. Hope that helps.
Just an fyi they sell a dipstick to check your trans fluid level. I know you can buy one on rock auto but im sure they sell them in a variety of places. They come with a chart that shows the level versus the temp of the car.
awesome video! gonna do this on my buddy's brother's compass... thanks for posting! the bottles at the store didn't say +4... wish i read the back. told him to go to dealer... oops oh well $$$
@crazybillsgarage please tell me you got your ears on... did you have trouble removing the old gasket?? Pretty sure this oil has never been changed... but can't see any way to get original gasket off...
@unclefreddieDied my original gasket was metal, so it came off really easy. Well at least I thought it was metal type gasket, maybe it wasn't original after all.
Mine is a 2010 Patriot and it was whining. Then here recently it would jeek really back when put in drive or reverse. I got it home and when i tried to back into the drive way it would barely move . I had to oull forward and get kinda a running atart to make it. Is it the fluid and filter ussues that are causing this. I was told there was a recall on these before 150k jeep would replace them , but it appears it wasn't done. .
Sadly the transmission CVT has failed, not sure if the fluid was the cause since Chrysler CVT had problems anyways. Change of fluid now probably won't fix the problem.☹️
@@crazybillsgarage that is not what I wanted to here. When I would go to take off earlier today. If I put on the brake with one foot and gas with the other it wouldn't jerk and took off smoothly. It was just not backing hardly at all.
@stevenwood6632 sorry Steven, is there anyway you can check the fluid to see if it's dark or burnt. They came with a full tube, some without dipstick. It's doing the classic CVT slippage, sometimes knew fluid helps but not sure if it will. Best to check fluid first.
@@crazybillsgarage I will try getting under there and see if I can get the drain plug open to check the fluid. I was trying to watch and see how you got the new fluid in after you had changed both filters and replace the pan , but I kept getting text and calls and will have to go back and watch again. I believe your total was 6 qts if I am not mistaken?
I'm not sure, but they do use compatible equipment. I just looked and it looks like they use the same filters and fluid. So it does look like it will work.
It's been awhile but I bought 7 liters and I have half liter left. I measured what came came out of the transmission since it has no dipstick. I believe I used 6 1/2 liters.

@IamVanessaGuillen New filters do the job. Thanks.
Can you change that little filter while there's fluid still in there, or does it need to be drained?
@real93love I would think since the fluid is in the pan and filter at top of tranny, it would be no problem to change the little filter. I have not done it that way myself just saying in theory it could be done.
Great video brother. I have watched it all the way to the end. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Thank you for watching it all. Netherlands looks like a beautiful country.👍
My jeep patriot needs this done!!!
Sadly an overlooked maintenance that the CVT in the Patriot will need. Hope you get it done or do it yourself.
So does mind.
@claudiachacon2299 not to hard of a job.
It says in my service manual the best time to do filter changes and fluid is when theres Tornado Watches out
Thanks that's good.😉

Happy to tell you that it works great, no problems and transmission always does what it's supposed to and no overheat problems.
How often to change CVT fluid and the 2 filters?

I have heard that it's best for the transmission to change it every 50,000 miles even though jeep says 90,000 miles.
@ourvanlives4736 earlier is always better with fluid changes.
you dont mention the torque spec for the pan...
I believe I torque those at 80 to 84 inch lbs.
It was working fine when it was parked . I did not change the fluid when I had it 🤔
No biggie, at least the fluid was still fluid. Lol

@unclefreddieDied not sure if it is a gasket, was metal gasket for mee.
How'd you clean the bottom gunk? from under the transmission? did you spray brake cleaner on it?
I sprayed Purple power when I received the Jeep, then sprayed off with power washer. Did finish off with a bit brake clean.
@@crazybillsgarage awesome! Thanks!

How is the Jeep Pat with the Lucas doing , is it just as good as Mopar oe fluid ? Let us know. Thanks 😊
Thank you Sergio, the Jeep Patriot is running fine with the Lucas, was more than half the price also.
I just picked some up for 8.93 a bottle at Canadian tire today normally 20.99 thanks for the info

@stevenwood6632 yes I replaced 6 quarts, should be a tube in engine bay close to battery location to check.
Great informative vid, helps a ton however what year is your Patriot? Mines a 2010, also is yours a 4x4? That’s what mine is.
Mine is 2008 front wheel drive. The CVT transmissions are very close in design, just a few differences.

How is that lucas cvt?
The Lucas worked really well, and I checked it a few times since I used it through last winter. Stayed very clean and no problems using it.
@crazybillsgarage should I go for it
Question;
Why do you put tran oil on the top filter seal?? What for and what if you hadn't??
Thanks!!
Lubrication, it's all about nothing binding up. No oil and it may bind as it's put back together and may cause a leak.
@@crazybillsgarage that seems CRAZY!!!!
thanks
@madmax8620 thanks madmax, your comedic timing is great.😅
About how long did this job take you? Thanks for the detailed video!
Also did I miss the 2nd filter or was that cut out?
The job took me about 1 hour and half.
I thought I showed both filters, and locations. Thanks.
How many quarts came out just out of the drain plug?
I didn't get a reading on that but I believe it would of been 6 Quarts and half a quart more from filter removal.
DID THE TRANSMISSION RUN WELL AFTER?
Yes I drove the Jeep all winter with no problems. Still working great today.
Is it the same as jeep compass 2012 ?
I'm not sure, but they do use compatible equipment. I just looked and it looks like they use the same filters and fluid. So it does look like it will work.
