I have a '15 Outlander Sport (USA), 4b12 +4wd, so the small filter is in a different spot, but this gave me the idea of how to get it done. I've been quoted between $700 to $1100 here for this level of work. You just saved me a ton of cash.
You're gonna have to pull the motor mount. There are facebook groups, and videos on YT to help you out. I tried to link you to it, but stupid YT comment policies won't let me. Pulling the mount isn't hard from what I've seen, just more work. Order some crush washers as well for the drain plugs.
Wait a tick, you said yours was a 2015, AWD? It might be under the battery actually, that's where mine was. I believe some time in 2016 or 2017 is when they moved it to behind the motor mount. Under the batter bracing, you'll see a similar looking cylinder, 4 bolts, two tubes running out of it. You'll have to pull the battery, and remove the air vent/tunnel, then remove the bracing. There are bolts underneath the bracing too, 10mm. I'd highly recommend have a finger ratchet to help you get those off, with extensions, *after you break them lose. Your fingers will thank you. Harbor Freight ftw.
I bought an Outlander Sport (RVR in Canada) a few days ago and I appreciate this video 100%. It's my line of thinking that people who are having issues with these JATCO transmissions have only done the fluid flush, and have not replaced the filters, or cleaned off any residue. Better yet, some may have replaced the filter in the pan, but have not replaced the transmission cooler filter as seen in your video. I'm of the opinion that if this filter is missed, the fluid will essentially get clogged within the filter crevices and eventually cause starvation of the transmission due to restricted flow within either of the filters. Anyway, I appreciate this video, and when the time comes, I will circle back and follow this as closely as I can. Thank you!
Nice work. We share the same philosophy in regard to attention to detail. Crazy to just drain and refill fluid amd not clean everything up, replace filters and get rid of that sludge. I am about to do the trans service along with serpentine belt, tensioner, idler pullies, NGK coils and plugs, and ceramic brake pads. My Outlander Sport just hit 75k miles and I am really happy with it. I think its a wonderful little SUV that has everything you want and none of what you dont. 4x4, backup camera, 30 miles to the gallon, 12" Rockford Fosgate sub woofer, leather, nice wheels, glass roof, and a great price point!
This was so informational! Thank you for the video. All the other ones I've seen have just been drain n fill. This Is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks
using this video as guide. i was able to successfully change the small transmission filter & change the ATF of an ASX 2015. though for the ASX 2015, you still need to remove the crossmember and front engine mount in order to gain access to small transmission filter. took me 4.5 quarts to replace the ATF. thanks mate!
I think you have a CVT instead of ATF. Double check and use the correct fluid. CVT is thicker I believe. There are some fluids that claim they can be used for both ATF and CVT but I wouldn't chance it.
That fluid is clean!! You must really take care of your car. Great information and Mitsubishi's are easy to work on and glad to see that you can fill it from the top.
I don't have a Mitsubishi, but I do have a CVT civic coupe ex-t. I do my fluid every 25,000 miles. I'll be doing both filters soon. I also use Castrol CVT fluid , cheaper and actually from the data sheets performs better. So far so good.
Good idea, I do mine every 20k miles. Used to do mine at 30k since the car was new but honestly the magnets are still pretty damn full even at that, so I have switched to 20k intervals. I might add another magnet as well next time I do a service.
The internal filter is just a can with the screen to filter out large pieces. So not really necessary to replace it right away. It's the external one that you want to replace
Thank you very much did this last night with your video BUT....I need to drain and do again and buy that 2nd filter. BTW my 2018 had 90KMiles and I had not done this so you probably saved my CVT.
I serviced the CVT in my Lancer and the gasket I had was leaking (cork gasket), a friend suggested using gasket sealant on where the gasket meets the pan. Great video 👍
Hey mate, thanks for uploading the transmission service Video. I think we must be due for the spark plugs and brake fluid change pretty soon. Cheers mate
I did this on my 2019 Outlander Sport (U.S. name) 2.4 liter engine and the paper filter is not easily accessible. A metal engine brace and engine mount need to be removed just to access the housing. Oh, the rubber O ring is not sold separately here in the U.S. It 's sold with the metal housing that covers the filter. I used Amsoil CVT fluid and noticed an immediate reduction in noise when flooring the gas pedal.
My 2015 outlander sport has a fikter housing that bumps against the engine mount, making it impossible to remove the second amaller filter. Its frustrating i cant get that out. Open to any tips if anyone has any! Thanks for the video! Good job!
Very well explained video!! I think this is the key for these transmission to last a bit longer. I did this on my niece's RVR couple of years ago. They parts guy at the dealer was surprised to see that the side filter was available. I bet not even the dealer replaces that filter. On the RVR (2011) the filter is on the other side at the top and a bit more difficult to replace. I also replace the bottom strainer and agree with you, that most likely can be cleaned and put back. Cheers
How is that fluid working? Per the directions, looks like a drain and fill is about 3.7 quarts of fluid, i.e. 3.5 L I ended up putting 4.5 quarts in. I think last time the tech put in 5.5…
Hey mate, great video! My transmission just started playing up. The revs fluctuate and today when i tried to take off at the lights it was gutless then all of a sudden changed through the gears (auto lol) I checked the level and its well below the C. Question... will it be best to do a top up only. Or do a fulll drain and topup like you have. Its cvtf-j4
I reuse the gaskets, not really any need to buy new ones all the time unless they get damaged during removal. You can also reuse the metal filter, they can be cleaned with brake cleaner to remove any metal fragments.
Friend I need to know the description of that transmission please. On the Mitsubishi it is 2700a435 but you have to have another number to buy the parts.
Honestly the magnets look pretty good for 70k on it. Most of the time they are almost full and you can't even see the magnets with how many shavings it has on it.
Is it okay to use a different brand of CVT oil? As far as I know, draining the oil does not remove all of it from the gearbox, so it will mix with the new oil.

Great thorough upload. How often do each of the filters need changing? I took my '17 to the Mitsubishi dealership for cvt fluid service which they used a machine to extract all fluids via cooler line but no mention of filters on the invoices. This was at 30k
Hi mate, the service manual recommended the first fluid change at 90k which i think is pushing it a little too long anyway. No mention of filters either so I doubt the dealers would even change them!
So usually the first 30 k is drain and fill...the secondary service afterwards is supposed to be everything...i dont trust dealers anyway..this is how to realllly do it
I believe the manual states every 30,000 miles for a fluid change. With a 2x drain and fill at intervals to get the most exchange out. The other way is to send it to the dealer for a $330 complete fluid exchange via their machine which gets all 7 quarts out. If you're using J4 from the dealer you'll need 9 quarts total for two drain and fills of 4.2 quarts. $20/quart you might start to consider the dealer's method of fluid exchange as it guarantees all fluid is replaced.
@@fixitfelix718 good holy moly or bad holy moly? Also if you're out of the warranty period, there are cvt fluids that are much cheaper and works (Castrol, Lubegard..)

Thanks for this, I have a 2016 Mitsubishi ASX 2.0L CVT Transmission. Owner before me changed the fluids so I am not sure it's accurate. I want to do what you did about filters and gasket. How much fluid will I need? Also I didn't see the check after the drive, is it that the fluid should be at the top mark above the H after a good drive? Thanks
For those of you with Mitsubishi ASX/RVR/Outlander Sport. The cooler filter is separate from the transmission. It’s located under the battery. The ASX/RVR uses the Lancer design including the old (but reliable) JF011E CVT design. The 2.4L Outlander CVT uses JATCO’s CVT-8, I believe, until the newly redesigned 2022 model year which uses the newest CVT-X model, which might explain why the filter is actually on the transmission. It appears the filter might be the same filter, but location is dependent on which CVT your vehicle has for sure.
Hi mate. thanks for this upload. question though. what about the torque tightness of the bolt screws? This is my first time changing the cvt oil tranmission. Or do you have a service manual that I can look into. And also do you use break cleaner to clean the parts (oil pan?). Thanks
Hi Hendrik, mate they are only small 10mm bolts so don't go too crazy. Just a decent nip up. You can use brake cleaner if you wish to clean the pan. i used Kenco degreaser. Cheers

Just curious. How much oil did it take sir?
Where can i buy this parts? And what its called
The big pan gasket is paper based ?

How to reset the service light on the dadh
I have made a separate video on that.
Hi mate. thanks for this upload. question though. what about the torque tightness of the bolt screws? This is my first time changing the cvt oil tranmission. Or do you have a service manual that I can look into. And also do you use break cleaner to clean the parts (oil pan?). Thanks
Hi Hendrik, mate they are only small 10mm bolts so don't go too crazy. Just a decent nip up. You can use brake cleaner if you wish to clean the pan. i used Kenco degreaser. Cheers
Thanks for the video! Anyone know if this is the same trans as the 2014?
Anyone know if it’s possible to change just the filter? Not sure how much fluid will be lost during the filter change?
Would be an easy job and you would lose minimal fluid. I would highly recommend changing the fluid though!
@@aheindustries Yep, will do it next change, at 110K. Does it use basically 4.5L or 1 gallon almost?
@@aheindustriesJust purchased a paper filter and a couple bottles of BG CVT fluid. Will report back how much fluid comes out since I’m not doing a full change. Only have about 10K miles on the fluid.
Jacked up the front and replaced just the filter on my my 2016. Only lost about 2 ounces of CVT fluid.
Is it the same for the Outlander Sport?
Yes
Did you use a torque wrench on the pan bolts?
No
Where can I find the oil filter if it’s not there on my Outlander 2011?
The earlier models were behind the oil cooler
When I change my liquid I see that had 3 small magnets
