    Hi Adam! This is Alex the (actual) train supervisor here. Thank you for your thorough and well researched video. The Tilt Train and I have done many hundreds of thousands of kilometres together, and I take great pride in the fact that myself and the onboard staff have safely taken millions of people where they need to get to around Queensland. We’d gladly welcome yourself or any other traveller onto the old girl anytime you visit QLD next. It was a pleasure to have you (even if I had no idea you were filming 😉)

    They were all very friendly and willing to help. Won't hesitate to travel again when I'm next across the ditch.

    This bad boy goes past my house twice daily. It goes past like a floating cloud it’s a nice change from the 60 odd coal trains that pass. I went on it earlier this year from rocky to Brisbane it was a nice change to be able to relax and not be driving.

    This is an excellent review with an "easy listening" commentary which contains all the information needed. The picture and sound quality of this video is exceptional. I noticed the facilities at the intermediate stations mostly offered refreshments and seating which is sadly lacking here in NSW.

    • @FromtheWindowSeat
      @FromtheWindowSeat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great to hear that - thank you! Yes, the facilities at Queensland stations seem quite good, although I'd still rather have NSW stations than South Australian ones - sadly, we don't really have any regional train services.

    Thanks for this I enjoyed it. I used to travel the Tilt Train each week from Bundy when it first kicked off with the early morning runs in the late 90's. No free wifi then - and neither did you book online. Hard to believe they've been on track for over 20 years. They were quite revolutionary for rail travel up and down the coast when they started. Great to see the Qld towns and stops I love - especially Rocky where we lived for a time too. So many familiar sights. And sounds - that horn . . . . .

    I actually had to travel to Bundy by tilt train a few months ago. I thought it was a decent experience for the price, but my timing was a bit of a pain. Because of the hot and dry weather, there was a few times we had to reduce speed by a fair bit to reduce risk of sparks making a fire.

    Victoria's Vlocity trains travel at 160 km/hr for quite long sections of their lines to Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo and Tragalgon. The distances are not long enough to provide a meal service, but do give an impression of speed. The Bendigo line was originally built to British mainline standards in the 1860's so it had very gentle curves, which was easy to upgrade to 160 km/hr with new track.

    • @FromtheWindowSeat
      @FromtheWindowSeat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, I'm very jealous of Victoria's regional rail network. It's great! I live in South Australia ... we have no regional trains, sadly.

    • @smitajky
      @smitajky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FromtheWindowSeat Yes, SA gave its rail to the commonwealth that were not interested in intra state travel. Tasmania did much the same. Then it was privatised and now if I understand it the Tasmanian government is having to buy back what is left. Our own ( Victorian) system has been so truncated that only major cities close to Melbourne are adequately served. For the rest it is largely take a bus or walk. Even if I ride my bike to the bus stop I am not permitted to put the bike onto the bus. So the service is nothing like what it was when I was young.

    Hello Adam. Very much enjoyed this ride. I have a love of trains. My earliest memory at around 4 years of age travelling from Raleigh to Casino to holiday with my grandmother. At 16 years of age I worked in the Ticket office at Moree and Gunedah. 9 half years. My last 9 half years I done security with Queensland Rail on the Suburban network.
    I feel I will have to do the run to Rockhampton. Realy good video. Almost felt I was there with you. Thank you very much for great coverage. Take care, and keep on riding the Old Rattler.

      We do have winter but it's relatively mild and limited to the southern states and that's why I live in Melbourne. I hate hot weather. Right now it's mid winter. It's nice to get around without being baked alive. Typically around 15C daily max.

    When I went on the electric Tilt Train in the late 90’s and early 00’s it seemed as though we routinely broke 180 and once I caught over 190 on the best sections of track. Since the accident that sent the diesel Tilt Train flying off the rails at 112 on a 60 bend, everything was limited to 100 for far too long (I’m not sure how 100 could have helped in that scenario?) and then eventually the fastest sections were lifted to 160 and the 160 limit seems very strict these days.

    • @FromtheWindowSeat
      @FromtheWindowSeat  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh right. That’s interesting to know. 🤔 It’s certainly disappointing that Australia hasn’t made any progress with high speed rail.

      I knew I remembered this and didn't just dream of it in a fever dream! When I went to boarding school in Rocky I was a regular on the Tilt Train and I know I'd frequently look up at the screens and see it hitting 180 or 190 km/h, I commented this on another video and got told I was wrong because the Tilt Train has never hit those speeds while carrying passengers.

Bit sad the trains can't go at top speeds which as you mentioned its same as driving prob why most do rather than choose rail as a option in similar circumstances. A German guy and I snuck in a bottle and only paid for coke cans and to top up with rum lol. It was slow but no way in hell I would take this new train. I liked having a room and a dinning car. But for a nation where train travel outside of cities is almost non existent due to the roads being given infrastructure priority for the developing years of the nation, 160 is a fair clip.

      They do. Unfortunately we don’t really have the political will here to build high speed rail. Italy also has higher population densities, which makes it easier to justify.

    great review, could have been a better experience if the train went at top speed for longer. The way they can do that is by upgrading the tilt system on the train to make it tilt more and possibly a duplication of the line which would take a long time but would be worth it, would you agree

      Given that the system for this piece of rolling stock is electric and it draws it's power from overhead with pantographs, I sincerely doubt that an increase in tilt angle is possible.

      @lucasmcgowan6306 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnmistelbauer953but the pendalino in Britain uses over head wires and can tilt more and go faster, so possibly the reason it can't tilt more is because queensland uses narrow guage track which isn't wide enough for a tilt mechanism to be properly used to it's full potential.

    Nice video, very positive. The food is a letdown. When it first launched in '98, business class included an alcoholic drink, a light snack, dinner was a real roast from the galley. etc., The whole thing was a bit of a political debacle, only matched by the diesel tilt train for sheer pointlessness. If you're in a hurry, you fly. If you need to stop in little places on the way, you get the bus. QR should have just ordered a new fleet of 'lander cars in the late 90s which would have lasted until at least 2050, and kept the ICE trains in motion. At least people knew what to expect with them.

    To all those people whingeing about the "slow" speeds and that Australia should have bullet trains, OZ doesnt have a large enough population to justify the extra expense of building and running them.
    The bullet trains carry 100's of passengers per trip to make it economically feasible. The only times OZ has 100's of passengers per trip is during peak hours on the suburban lines.
