This is a great video. It brings back many fond memories. I rode the Spirit of the Outback from Longreach to Brisbane in the early 2000s. It was one of the best train trips that I have ever taken. I lived in Melbourne from 1999 to 2005. Being a fan of Qantas, I wanted to see the Qantas Museum and experience the Outback. I flew to Longreach and took the train back to Brisbane. I organized a hire car for use in Brisbane. When I told the agent the time I would arrive in Brisbane, she said the office would be closed. But not to worry! They left the keys and contract in the car. That, needless to say, caught this Texan’s breath. I've got this very trip booked for winter next year- very excited! I'll be doing it in reverse- flying out, doing all the excursions that were mentioned as well as the dinosaur tour in Winton, then training it back to Roma St on the Monday. Can't wait!
An excellent film. Use it or lose it is the clear message. Many of the trains I travelled on with my family both in Oz and NZ in the 1990s have gone - we need railways more than cars. Must have been wonderful in steam days.
My husband and I did this return trip a few years ago and it was a fantastic trip. Everything on board was first class, our sleeper, food, staff, company we kept in the lounge and dining car. We made the return trip a week later and it was great to have some who were on the upward trip making the return with us. Would do it again but stay in Winton rather than Longreach.
this is one of the better train travelogues I have watched. You give us details about the train, the places, and the meals. Really enjoyed your photography of the varied landscapes. If ever I am able to make a trip to Australia, I would make an effort to ride on this train!
Coal hauling trains are the reason you had a great ride from Rocky to Emerald. The line is well maintained and the boom in coal mining has meant the high demand for well maintained trackwork for this section of track. I hope to ride the rails on this service soon. You should be paid by the rail services for your great presentation.

Great review. When I worked at Linfox, we took over the intrastate freight services and my last task was the cutover of of IT services (from Aurizon to Linfox) at Longreach. Sadly, it was flying/driving for me. On a happier note, freight loadings have risen hugely under Linfox which is good for rail and, hence, good for the community.
Thanks for such an interesting film. Watching from the UK I'm impressed at how clean and well-kept the stations are you go through! The train looks tired but I'd like to do the trip one day.
This was amazing. You've answered to many questions I had about this journey. I need to do it now. Thanks for making this video. I've enjoyed your other ones aswell 😀
Interesting that you stopped in Anakie. When I was at primary school here in London (UK) we had a teacher come over on an exchange visit from a primary school in Anakie. When she went home, she asked her pupils if they wanted to be penpals with anyone at our school, and those that did sent a batch of letters for our teachers to distribute to us. In assembly one morning we were asked who wanted a penpal in Australia, and I put my hand up. The teacher said that she had a great one for me, as someone had written who had the same first and surname as me!! We wrote back and forth for a while and learned that even our sisters had the same name! I recall his dad was a miner. But eventually the letters dried up and we lost touch. I occasionally still think of him, and wonder whether he might still be living Anakie.
Nice to see you back. Was only thinking the other day hadn’t seen a video for a little while. Lovely trip. Nothing like an adventure into the bush by rail. I do like a bed for sleeping at night. Weird that they don’t have similar sleeper cars on the Cairns train but those BC sleeper seats but here they have the decent and better sleeper cars.
I'm liking your new style live commentary! Hahahaha.... I absolutely suck at it. I've realised I can never ever sleep on the train. I recently did the XPT sleeper and I was awake the entire time. Urgh. So on that trip I was awake for 3 whole days. Enjoyed the video!
Thanks so much Ryan! I’m not very good at sleeping on trains myself … the things you’re willing to do for TH-cam. 🙊😂 Someone told me I should do more pieces to camera, so figured I’d give it a go. It’s easier to do when you have a private cabin … I’m a bit more reluctant in an open carriage / cabin. ☺️
Great vid Adam. You have obviously put a lot of time and effort into it. I will check out some of your other vids. Love the train announcement lady. It doesn't get more Aus than that (-:
A memory of the trip from Longreach to Brisbane and return. It was a steam engine to Emerald from Longreach getting to Emerald around 11pm. They used 2 steam engines to get over the Drummond Range. Arrive in Rockhampton around 9 or 10am, with a lay over until 5 or 6pm if catching the Brisbane Rocky mail train, 9pm if catching the Sunlander from Cairns to Brisbane. Gympie was the morning stopover if catching the Rocky-Brisbane mailtrain as it had no showers or dining facilities. Passengers had showers at Gympie followed by breakfast. Lunch was bought at one of the stops where sandwiches were available. A lot different to now. My last journey to Longreach return was in 1977, not a lot had changed then other than diesel engine and no longer the mail train available. No air conditioning on the mail train.
Damn, it's been almost 3 years since I took this trip. Totally worth it, especially if you can do it in summer when they run their two for one deal - plus a lot less people in general means the lounge is all nice and spacious. They're small cabins, but absolutely perfect for the length of the trip and I got a good sleep each way.
I love these videos. So informative.I have always wanted to do the train journey to Longreach from Brisbane, and I can see I had better hurry before they maybe take this service away, in the cause of 'efficiency'.
I did the Spirit of The Outback a couple of years ago. Not only is Longreach a fabulous destination, but getting the train to and from is an absolute bonus adventure in itself. Yes it is a bit dated but functional, food and staff great and it's something different. I travelled with someone so we had a twin sleeper, which is the same as the single sleeper but the with partition removed, so you face each other. Definitely feels more spacious. The lounge car was out of service on our trips, and was replaced with the replacement dining car shown in this journey. Coming in to Longreach it was already dark and we were treated to a lightening display as we rolled in. If you're thinking about doing this trip, do it!
I travelled as far as Gympie on one of my trips to Australia, so it was nice to relive the journey again, I will check out your Tlit train video next, thanks.
Hi Adam Enjoying your journeys on trains. Your commentary is very clear and enjoyable tropics. Would be great if you did the Indian Pacific, Sydney to Perth, it’s on our list of travels for the future. Thanks keep travelling.
Hi Adam good to hear your voice again I really enjoy watching your videos. Trip looked great scenery was really good and meals absolutely yummy. Hope you enjoyed your triip . MERRY XMAS AND HAPPY NES YEAR hope you have more coming soon.
Hi Maureen. Thanks so much. Yes, it was a wonderful trip. I was in New Zealand for a few week so that put a hold on things but hopefully can get things moving again now. Merry Christmas to you too!
Fantastic review thanks! We’d have more trains if we had more population, but then we wouldn’t be Australia any more! I remember seeing the ground flying past the bottom of the toilet chute on the old train from Kalgoorlie to Port Pirie in the late 1950s: a bit scary for a 6 year old. It was diesel but a steam train for the side trip to Adelaide. Had to change trains and gauges again in Albury! We would drive from Bunbury to Kalgoorlie then put the car on the train as the Nullarbor was unpaved and slow: 2-3 day trip with bull dust everywhere and no motel until an old cinder block relic in Eucla
It's like travelling with a mate! Your reviews are grand. Hope Longreach was great - the Qantas museum looks and sounds really cool. I really wanted to go on the XPT but missed my chance!
great video, did this trip in 2005 with my wife, 2 young daughters and also were able to take our car, we had a triple economy class sleeper, was a great trip and i'd like to do it again
Thanks for this video review. I found it very informative, interesting and entertaining ! I'd love to travel on this one day and visit the Qantas museum too.
I'm a retired QldRail employee and once worked for Traveltrain as it was called then. I remember those single berth sleepers. They haven't changed much in 20 years. Great video, thank you. I thought they'd replaced all the dump toilets years ago?
Thank you! The return was booked as a through trip with a connecting flight to Adelaide so was over $600 but standard fares between Longreach and Brisbane are about $250.
The advisory to avoid using train toilets while the train is at a station is a precautionary measure. Although modern trains, such as Queensland Rail’s ‘Spirit of the Outback,’ are equipped with retention tanks that store waste onboard, there are several reasons for this guideline: 1. Maintenance and Servicing: Retention tanks have limited capacity and require regular emptying at designated facilities. Using the toilets while the train is stationary, especially during extended stops, can accelerate the filling of these tanks, potentially leading to overflows or the need for unscheduled maintenance. 2. Odor Control: Even with advanced waste management systems, using toilets while the train is stationary can result in odors permeating the cabin, affecting passenger comfort. 3. Operational Procedures: Some trains may have systems that automatically lock toilets when the train is at a station to prevent usage during these times. This is a holdover from older practices where waste was discharged directly onto the tracks, and while modern trains have improved systems, the advisory remains as a standard operational procedure. It’s important to note that while modern trains have advanced waste management systems, the advisory to refrain from using toilets while at stations is a precautionary measure to ensure optimal operation and passenger comfort.
Really enjoyed just watching your Spirit of the Outbook train journey from Brisbane to Longreach a year ago. Could you tell me what you did for transport in Longreach....hire car....public transport? Thanks Cheryl
11:56 Correction: This is not Mount Coolum but Mount Ninderry, as some viewers have pointed out. Oops! Mount Coolum is about 9km further east.
There are tracks up Mt Ninderry and a few lookout spots on the top.

We wrote back and forth for a while and learned that even our sisters had the same name! I recall his dad was a miner. But eventually the letters dried up and we lost touch. I occasionally still think of him, and wonder whether he might still be living Anakie.
Wow. What a small world … that’s an incredible story. Cheers!
Thank you. Yes, it was a great trip. I went to New Zealand for a few weeks so that put a pause on all my editing. 😉
Great video, Adam. Really informative and interesting.
Much appreciated! Thank you!
Thanks Adam for another fantastic review and video.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it.
Always do Adam. If my health improves I'm doing this trip.
Fantasric review. I live in Brisbane and it’s on my bucket list to go that train journey. I really enjoyed this , thanks.
They also offer Coke and Sprite reviews
Thank you! You definitely should! Cheers.
Ha! 🥤
Great review. The train looks great and the trip considering the distance is much cheaper than the Indian Pacific or Ghan. The meals look great.
Thank you! Yes, I certainly think it represents excellent value. :)
Great vid Adam. You have obviously put a lot of time and effort into it. I will check out some of your other vids. Love the train announcement lady. It doesn't get more Aus than that (-:
Thanks so much - great to hear that. Yes, very Australian! 😁
The menu selection was quite impressive. Very enjoyable video.
It was. Thank you!
Good food by the way. It all looked tasty. And decent serves.
It was. 😋
This channel is very underrated.
And has very good potential for 100k subs, new sub!
Thank you! 🙏
Wow … that is quite the adventure! Thank you for sharing. Cheers!
No dining.
No air con.
OMG.
Next you'll be saying there were no pillows. 😉
@@le13579 stick yer head out the window- natural airconditioning lol
Damn, it's been almost 3 years since I took this trip. Totally worth it, especially if you can do it in summer when they run their two for one deal - plus a lot less people in general means the lounge is all nice and spacious. They're small cabins, but absolutely perfect for the length of the trip and I got a good sleep each way.
Yes, two for one is incredible value! Cheers.
I love these videos. So informative.I have always wanted to do the train journey to Longreach from Brisbane, and I can see I had better hurry before they maybe take this service away, in the cause of 'efficiency'.
Happy to hear that. Yes, definitely worth making this trip.
Agreed. Thank you for sharing! 😊
I travelled as far as Gympie on one of my trips to Australia, so it was nice to relive the journey again, I will check out your Tlit train video next, thanks.
Oh cool. Hope you enjoy!
Excellent information and narration...
Thank you kindly!
Hi Adam
Enjoying your journeys on trains. Your commentary is very clear and enjoyable tropics. Would be great if you did the Indian Pacific, Sydney to Perth, it’s on our list of travels for the future. Thanks keep travelling.
Great suggestion! I’ll see what I can do. 🤔
That's it Adam.... you're off to Perth! 😄
Thank you! Wow - that sounds like an incredible journey across the country!
It's like travelling with a mate! Your reviews are grand. Hope Longreach was great - the Qantas museum looks and sounds really cool. I really wanted to go on the XPT but missed my chance!
Thanks so much … wonderful to hear! Yes, the Qantas Founders Museum was excellent!
Well done and congratulations. Very informative and interesting. Oh, and a BIG thumbs up.
Thanks so much!
great video, did this trip in 2005 with my wife, 2 young daughters and also were able to take our car, we had a triple economy class sleeper, was a great trip and i'd like to do it again
Thank you! Sounds like you had a wonderful journey.
Thanks for this video review. I found it very informative, interesting and entertaining ! I'd love to travel on this one day and visit the Qantas museum too.
Really glad to hear that. You definitely should. Cheers!
I'm a retired QldRail employee and once worked for Traveltrain as it was called then. I remember those single berth sleepers. They haven't changed much in 20 years. Great video, thank you. I thought they'd replaced all the dump toilets years ago?
Thank you so much! I think all the carriages had retention toilets except for the single sleeper … but I’m guessing they will replace it soon. 🤞🏽
God bless you m8 great video nice food on that train all the best John uk 😊
Ps how much was the flight back 😊
Thank you! The return was booked as a through trip with a connecting flight to Adelaide so was over $600 but standard fares between Longreach and Brisbane are about $250.
Excellent review….. well done looking forward to the next one
Thanks so much!
Thank you Adam! I really enjoyed that review.
Thanks so much Irene.
Great trip .Winton most known for Walzing matilda was first performed in the town. Fitting it was an outback town.
Cheers! Good to know!
Excellent, thanks. New Years greetings from the UK.🤗
Thank you. And to you! 🥂
I took this trip from Rockhampton to Longreach in 1970. It had three engines to pull us over the Drummond Range and it took three days each way. 😮
Oh wow … quite the adventure!
The advisory to avoid using train toilets while the train is at a station is a precautionary measure. Although modern trains, such as Queensland Rail’s ‘Spirit of the Outback,’ are equipped with retention tanks that store waste onboard, there are several reasons for this guideline:
Oh right …. Good to know! And thank you for sharing all that background.
Great video Adam! Everything was so much greener than I expected! Longreach especially!
Thanks Paul! Yes, I thought the same. I think they’d had decent rains. ☺️
Hi Adam.. you inspire me to explore Australia via train
I’m really happy to hear that. ☺️
The sleeping carriage is the ultimate way to travel IMHO.
Yes, definitely. 👍
Another world-class video.
Thank you!
Really enjoyed just watching your Spirit of the Outbook train journey from Brisbane to Longreach a year ago. Could you tell me what you did for transport in Longreach....hire car....public transport? Thanks Cheryl
Thank you! Have replied to your DM.
Great video. Our trains in qld are in desperate need of a refit or replacement to modernise them.
Thank you! Yes, I think there was a government project to look into replacing/updating them but not sure what happened to it. 🤔
