Perhaps I need to add the railways of Botswana to my bucket list. 🤔🤓 I guess, generally speaking, Australian railways aren’t as developed as Europe. We have a much smaller population and the low density of our towns and cities doesn’t help either.
One thing this video did exhibit was the decline of this line over the years along with much of the infrastructure over Victoria and indeed the rest of Australia. Evident with evidence of sights of lots of abandoned infrastructure. Only back in the 70’s the towns along the way were thriving hubs of transport, eg, Geelong, Colac, Camperdown and Terang. Warrnambool beyond the main station on a remanent of the abandoned Port Fairy line being the only place where any significant freight activity is taking place. With through links to Timboon, Mortlake and Port Fairey closed. And soon the loss of one of the few remaining loco hauled services for so called more acceptable Velocity services. RIP Victorian Railway’s, your best days are behind you.🇦🇺
It's sad that the railways were allowed to decline (similar to the tramways in many major cities) but some states (in particular Victoria) are investing a lot of money in urban and regional railways, so I think that's positive. Of course, more could always be done - but I'm glad to see more recognition for the role that rail can play.
They should upgrade Portland port and rail links as it has a deep water harbour. A proper railway along the coast could piggy back on those freight train tracks.
just wondering why the surfaces of body panels of the old v line trains are uneven. Is it due to poor crafting when the trains were built? or is it the result of metal aging?
Hi Steven. I'm not sure to be honest ... although some of the carriages are more than 40 years old now. You can read more about their construction here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VicRail_N_type_carriage#Construction
It’s at the rear on services departing Melbourne (but at the front on the return). Staff advise which carriages are unreserved at the start of the trip.
@@FromtheWindowSeat they were testing the train i remember. It wasn't working tbe way the driver wanted it to be checking brqkes out but it worked after a while. Those new trains have some kind of air suspension look like.
Thank you! There’s actually five different tracks, all from the TH-cam Audio Library. If you look at the description of my video and scroll down, TH-cam should show you the five songs, which you can click on to hear.
Nice… 17:15 | Economy does have legroom as long you’re not sitting in front of anyone. 17:50 | not really 160 km/hs as pretty much you’d be slow on turns and some others. Also, I’m gonna tell ya, probably most are not going to like the new VLocities on long distance. Because they’ve got no first class, no reclinable seats instead more uncomfortable probably, no leg presses, only two toilets per set, reduced capacity compared to 4 and 5 car N sets. So that’s why locomotives and loco-hauled carriages are better in my opinion.
Hi Nick. Yes, true re legroom - but wouldn't be great on a full service where you have to face others. Re speeds, yeah - I get that, but I think the 20 minute saving takes that into account. The time saving appeared in a number of media reports so I'm presuming the State Government provided the figure at some point (though I couldn't find it any of the more recent Warrnambool line upgrade information). Re the new VLocities - yeah, I've heard about some of those issues. That said, I caught a VLocity to Ararat and back in a day and found it fine. But it wasn't too busy, so that probably helped (had the row to myself).
20:43 why are the cars going backwards mate.🤔 I have lived in Warrnambool all my life, and I don’t think cars go backwards. No hate mate just thought it was funny! Keep up the good work 👍
Hi! I'm planning to go to Australia this year. Is there any weight limitation or maximum size dimension for checked luggage at the VLine from Melbourne - Warrnambool? I'm a bit worried if large size travel luggage (about 30inch) is not allowed.
Hi. There are limits … From December 1 2021 the total luggage limit for all V/Line services is 32 kilograms. Customers can carry two items of luggage, with no one item weighing more than 16 kilograms, as well as one piece of hand luggage. You can read more here: www.vline.com.au/Fares-general-info/Bikes-Luggage-Animals
The diesel locomotive services in regional Victoria are no faster a steam train! It takes literally hours to get from Melbourne to Warrnambool. To any tourists from Japan! If you intend on touring Warrnambool, beginning from Melbourne on public transport, “Pack heaps of valium” you’ll need it. Take a houseboat the ocean views are far more beautiful
Not much of an upgrade to Velocity, what with fixed seats, no kiosk or first class. As another rail fan I must make the trip before these locos are retired. Just this week I finally took the Velocity to Ararat, with a coach connection to Horsham where I certainly can’t fault the staff or smooth ride, the facilities were well maintained and there was at least a water fountain in one carriage. For those with limited time connections in Ararat I can suggest a ten minute dash to the KFC just 200 metres away for an onboard meal back to Melbourne. That presented me with the new quandary of rubbish disposal as the only onboard bins are tiny and are designed for the paper cups from the water dispenser - I zipped onto the platform at Ballarat to put my rubbish in a bin before we departed. 😅
Yes, it’s hard to beat a loco-hauled set. Although I am keen to try the standard garage VLocities that feature a cafe. It would be great to see a more regular train service restored to Horsham but given the standard gauge route via Geelong is much longer, not sure that will happen. 🤔
@@FromtheWindowSeat The local councils and greater community have proposed a standard gauge configured Velocity shuttle route from Ararat to Stawell, Murtoa, Horsham and possibly Dimboola. Just a ten metre walk to change at the Ararat platform. There are such a thing as multiple gauge trains in Europe so that could be explored though politically inconvenient unless they’re manufactured locally. That being said, the current solution of a connecting road coach all the way to Nhill is reasonable, with its luggage bay, wheelchair lift, usb sockets and small lavatory. Though darn it rocks about being so high above the ground, don’t use that loo until you’re sure it’s a straight stretch of road.
Maybe you are lucky the cafeteria is closed, I got blasted continually over the speakers, all the way, with cafeteria advertising announcements. And people needed to pre order and again the continuous ordering and collection announcements being made over the speakers. Became cannon fodder for the PA, certainly arrived looking shell shocked. Never going again. Great video.

HI ADAM JUST FOUND YOUR CHANNEL AND I HAVE ENJOYED IT SO HAVE ADDED IT TO MY WATCH LIST ONLY YOU AND A VLOGER CALLED RORY SHOW WHAT THE SCIENEY OUT SIDE IS SO I WIIL NOT WATCH THE OTHERS UNTILL THEY LEARN WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO SEE LOOK FORWARD TO FINDING OTHER VLOGS OF YOURS
Thank you. Yes, Rory Ding makes similar videos.
First class! Italian 3rd class is better. VLine is the rail service you'd expect to find in Botswana.
Perhaps I need to add the railways of Botswana to my bucket list. 🤔🤓
I guess, generally speaking, Australian railways aren’t as developed as Europe. We have a much smaller population and the low density of our towns and cities doesn’t help either.
The place names are hilarious!
Most of them are derived from Aboriginal words.
Thank you. Great video 👍👍👍👍🇦🇺🙏
Thank you - much appreciated!
Could you please travel to Seymour next
Maybe. 🤔
3:57 best loco in the fleet!!!
Oh right - why is that?
A great video!😀
Thank you!
It's a shame you didn't do a review but in the West Coast Railway days?
Yes, sadly I missed that.
Like Australia where thou so many vast land but they preferred to have them remained it was to show their beauty of origin.
😍
just wondering why the surfaces of body panels of the old v line trains are uneven. Is it due to poor crafting when the trains were built? or is it the result of metal aging?
Hi Steven. I'm not sure to be honest ... although some of the carriages are more than 40 years old now. You can read more about their construction here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VicRail_N_type_carriage#Construction
@@FromtheWindowSeat thank you for providing the information of construction. Good on you mate😃😃
@@stevenchu3878 Not a problem. Was interesting to read more about them. 😉
Thank you for the video 👍👍
Glad you liked it. ☺️
damn, I’ve been out of Victoria waaaaaaaay too long. I didn’t even know Waurn Ponds had a train station 😂
🤣
Is first-class carriage located at the rear or the front of the train? If it is the rear, what about unreserved carriages?
It’s at the rear on services departing Melbourne (but at the front on the return). Staff advise which carriages are unreserved at the start of the trip.
Very informative 👏 👌
Thank you!
i remember seeing the new carriages on a train series on tv a while ago they were testing them out after being assembled look pretty sleak and modern
Something to look forward to, I guess.
@@FromtheWindowSeat they were testing the train i remember. It wasn't working tbe way the driver wanted it to be checking brqkes out but it worked after a while. Those new trains have some kind of air suspension look like.
Melbourne to Warrnambool via train 😍
Yes 🙌
Great video, Do you know what the name of the song is which was used in your video?
Thank you! There’s actually five different tracks, all from the TH-cam Audio Library. If you look at the description of my video and scroll down, TH-cam should show you the five songs, which you can click on to hear.
Nice…
17:15 | Economy does have legroom as long you’re not sitting in front of anyone.
It takes the same time to get to Wonthaggi by vline coach even though it's only half the distance
Ah - interesting. Think I’d still rather take a slow train than a fast bus. 🤔
@@FromtheWindowSeat the train to Warrnambool covers twice the distance our coach does in the same time. I'd prefer the fast train
@@davidnorton7464 oh sorry - I misunderstood. Yeah, a fast train is always good.
20:43 why are the cars going backwards mate.🤔 I have lived in Warrnambool all my life, and I don’t think cars go backwards. No hate mate just thought it was funny! Keep up the good work 👍
Ha! Extra points to you for close observation! That was just to make the footage fit into my video (because it was filmed in the reverse direction).
all good mate, it makes sense now!😂lol
You can read more here:
www.vline.com.au/Fares-general-info/Bikes-Luggage-Animals
Shepparton used to use loco now it is velocity how do I know I go to a suburb close to Seymour like once a month
Good to know. Cheers!
Ha!
There are no "Guards" on VLINE trains - they are "Conductors", who are predominantly Customer Service and Passenger Safety focused.
Ah, apologies about that.
@@FromtheWindowSeat no probbies mate - just wanted to point it out. There have not been any guards on Victorian Railways for quite some time 🙂
At the 7.37 mark just to correct U their not rail cars there called comeg which started back in 1981or Metro as we know it now
Ah cool. Thanks. Yes, we have similar sets in Adelaide except they’re diesel powered (the 3000 class).
@@FromtheWindowSeat yes I've heard of them have ya got any red hens left?
I don't mind the vlocity but I'm going to miss vline n classes & so on
@@matthewmassarotti2596 Not in service in Adelaide but there are some operated by Steamranger between Goolwa and Victor Harbor.
@@FromtheWindowSeat oh good i'm glad to hear that is still running i would love to go & ride on them one day i thought the steamranger had close down

Tanty Melbourne 🇦🇺😍
😄
Do the Vlocity's have a First Class and a Cafe?
No, they don’t have either. The new standard gauge VLocitys, which will run to Albury, are meant to have a cafe but it hasn’t been fitted yet.
I worked out you were in acn51
Good sleuthing. How did you work that out? 🤔
Bn4 and brn49 are in set 18 and acn 51 is the only first class car in set 18 (there’s a set configuration in Wikipedia you can see)
Not much of an upgrade to Velocity, what with fixed seats, no kiosk or first class.
Please tell me track renovation in Warrnambool line.
Yes, they’re working on it now I think.
If You like loco diesel trains, please go to Europe (not UK😊). We have a lot of this. Romania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slowakia, Hungary, Turkey...
Very keen to. 😊
Excellent 🤩🤩🤩🤩❤️❤️❤️❤️🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

Informative
Thanks!
Oh right - sounds like quite the experience! 😬
