I'm the principal bogie engineer for the last remaining rolling stock manufacturer in Australia (UGL. Formerly Goninan). I've designed bogies that are in use all around the world. We are currently manufacturing one of my designs for use on locomotives for Taiwan. I can tell you that the bogies on the Ghan (and Indian Pacific) are extremely primitive and unstable in comparison to modern designs. The ride on these trains could be improved immensely, and people could actually sleep while the train is running,. Presumably the capital cost is considered more important than allowing the customers to sleep well.

I love the extra space you get in the double cabin but the single gold has the bed along the window so you can prop your pillows up lay back and have a hell of a lot better view than the gold double cabin 👍🏻😁

I went on this with my Dad back in 2016 as he works in transport and got a discount for us, we stayed in gold class too. It is seriously beautiful and the service is incredible. The sleeping was tough but otherwise I loved it. I can see how this is more for older/retirees (no Wifi and super expensive), proven by the fact that I was the youngest on there! BUT I highly recommend this trip to everyone to try at least once. Definitely worth it.

Hi Paul: I really enjoyed this review of the Ghan!. The “ride” itself was spectacular along with that jet boat ride that looked like a lot of fun. Your room looked cozy and I appreciated seeing the bathroom and shower. Now then the food! I love reading menus. One of the reasons I am such a plane enthusiast is due to the menus and food. You excelled on this journey and I was in seventh heaven reading all the menus, deciding what I would choose and seeing what you had and in most cases choosing the same. Even the wines looked delicious. Thank you for sharing this unique rail journey. I would love it if you did more of them although most have already been covered. You might try Royal Canadian Pacific which is ultra luxurious travel on a par with the Ghan. Best wishes and cheers from Colin.

Quite a journey! Great food, excellent support and personal touch from the staff, extra tours like Simpsons Gap, home comforts like a good shower and gaining new information about this vast brown (and green) land that many of us call home. Well commentated Paul... perhaps my wife and I had better buy a couple of tickets and travel on the Ghan for the first time!

I have always wanted to do this train journey but the extraordinary cost is way out of my budget and more so with the Indian Pacific. I was looking at how much you travel around and now I'm wondering how the hell do you afford this. I know since 2014 (new smart TH-cam CEO started) TH-cam income has been heavily set backwards and the smart algorithm makes sure you are set a 'hull speed' for your channel your not allowed to cross. ANYWAY, seeing the shower on this train has given me ideas for a renovation to a tiny bathroom.

Glad you enjoyed the trip. Great report btw. Was interesting seeing it from Adel to Darwin. Different tours from August 2 years ago. An overseas train worth doing is VIA rail's The Canadian. It doesn't have the side tours and the gold twins are more like the Great Southern's single with a shared shower. In Winter it's spectacular. A bit of an adventure in that one never knows how late it will be running. 24hrs is not unheard of.

@@PaulStewartAviation very much so. Although mum liked the bed in the basic gold cabin better. Gold superior was an extra $900 each so we passed. Platinum was$3300 each one way. The cake was by request. Disability cabin was just so close to explorer and Adelaide lounges. Cheers.

Ah, I loved this video. Well done, mate. Just on a side note, did that announcer on the train sound a little bit like that voice Glenn Robbins puts on when he plays Russell Coight narrating on the history of various Australian landmarks?

I really enjoyed this Paul . I’ve been on lots of “ sleepers “ , usually from Sydney to Picton on the Old Southern Highlands Express 😀, in fact I never failed to sleep , but nothing as luxurious as this one . The tucker looked top shelf . I’m glad you had a good time and enjoyed the whole experience . Thanks for sharing this great video and stay safe .

What an epic adventure - really enjoyed this latest vlog, the service, food, cabin looked more comfortable than I was expecting and not being Australian myself, it was invaluable to learn about the country, history, geology and food and wine. When you come over here you’ll have to ask me about the Orient Express! Thank you so much for sharing Paul! 🙏🇦🇺 🚂 🍷🦘

A great survey of the trip Paul. I personally won't be trying it unless the track and ancient rolling stock are upgraded. I feel only if this was done would the exorbitant ticket cost be justifiable. The catering is a remarkable achievement given the constraints of the kitchen.

Looks like a great experience Paul! You said that gold class is the cheapest now? So they no longer offer the standard chair any longer? I suppose that in the era of Jetstar, flying is now more affordable

A terrific documentary Paul, and not simply a video. Lots of very interesting commentary, for you've clearly done some good research beforehand, and you've paid good attention to the detail around your cabin. Your commentary is far better than a mere descripton of the scenes before you. These luxury domestic rail journeys like the Ghan and the Indian-Pacific are a superb way of seeing more of Australia whilst we can't do any overseas travel this year. I hope you consider doing the Indian-Pacific sometime.

We are just averaged working class people who decided to take a trip on the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin. Upon investigation into the cheapest fares we realised we would have to take a 2nd mortgage on our home to pay for the trip. The rail prices are just to expensive for the average Australian, it's only for the elite. So sad.

    • @Hoodoo04

There is a cheaper option as long as you are happy shovelling coal into the burners for a few hours each day.

    • @btakesa
      @btakesa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Hoodoo04 If that was the case I would be happy to give up a couple of hours to help pay for the trip. However they would charge extra for a shower.

The fares correlate with the international tourism industry. Not for the average local affordability - those days are over.

Definitely doing this whenever I finally visit Australia. Not sure the Platinum class is worth it. I expected a real double bed and maybe even a bathtub. Palladium class maybe? Haha
