      you made an amazing point. If it was a selling point to get people onto the subscription service it would do way better and i think people would not be so hard. I dont think i would be as hard on it if its on their subscription service it would have been a smart idea and probably made it an easier for people to accept it because i can already play the ps4 version of the game on the subscription service making it day 1 for the subscription service would have made people way more accepting of it. Personally i think its too early for this remake. I think in 5 or 6 year it would have been a perfect idea. honestly most games usually take a very long time to remake a game when its not fresh in players minds.
      I think the price point is going to be the biggest turnoff and they could have avoided that but chose not to. I also think its a really bad sign when right before releasing they have to constantly justify its existance. people i know are not really hyped for this game they are skipping it for ragnarok feeling its more worth their money which is the feeling im getting for normies that ragnarok is preferred over this game. I think part of it is that fans feel burnt by the last games choices TLOU 2. amazing game with a terrible story. I think the playstation 5 price hike is definitely going to hurt this games sales as well. I personally think this game may be beat out by other games coming out this year that people want

    I'm buying this due to the accessibility options. I played the first game back on the ps3 and at so many moments i got lost or couldn't see what to do. I've got low vision and personally I don't mind giving naughty dog $70 because they are showing so much time and energy to make the game easier to play. Maybe in a few years these options will be the norm but now we need to show devs that the efforts aren't in vein for disabled gamers.

    I think its fair to say that many people who wanted to play the first Last of Us already have. It's a shame this wasn't taken as an opportunity to expand or greatly improve the game in ways other than graphically. Something like a few extra chapters would have been nice to treat long-time fans and to tie them over until the release of the show. I'm excited to eventually play this but it's a hard sell when it's $70 for a game that has less content than an existing release, considering there is no multiplayer either.
    Great video though. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts, which ultimately confirmed my suspicions surrounding this release.

    6:50 That whole tangent is pretty much what I was hoping for this remake, and it's THE reason that would've made me buy it, hell, even at the current price tag, because it was sooooo good in Part 2 and would've definitely made it worth a replay. But as it stands, yeah, I played it a few times in 2013, then I replayed it on PS4 once before Part 2 came out, and I see no interest in grabbing this version.
    I know the story, I know the game, I know how it plays, where to go, for what, and when, etc, so if nothing is different, I might as well enjoy other games and new experiences

      I'd be shocked if it does, TLoU is a unique situation. Few other companies are going to greenlight a full-budget remake of such a recent game like Sony did here, let alone an in-house one; few games have the social capital to get away with a remake like what's still - even with recent backlash by a loud (but seemingly growing) minority - one of the most acclaimed games of all time critically and publicly; _no_ other game developers are...well let's be real, pretentious enough to not want to change a single substantive thing about their game when given the chance to do a full remake; and although this last part is going to change likely _because_ of TLoU, few game franchises have found such full-throated support in Hollywood enough to justify remaking a game for a whole new audience.
      Plus, realistically I have a feeling that a lot of the justification is that this is probably a "training" project for some of the junior ND staffers - it's rare you can directly profit off of training new(ish) hires.

The persisting rumor from back when the game was first leaked was that it was essentially "done" (for all intents and purposes) and ready to go whenever.

    My only real problem with this is that it isn’t worth the price. Which I think is a PlayStation problem and not a naughty dog problem, though I can’t be certain. Like you said, include this in the ps plus service. Maybe $20-$30 instead of $70. A $10 upgrade if you owned the remastered PS4 game (and potentially lock out people who only have it through the ps plus collection). I get that a lot of money was spent making this and the developers worked their asses off to make this happen (naughty dog has always been one of the better studios in this industry striving for above and beyond games), but that doesn’t matter if the consumers decide it isn’t worth it. If we collectively don’t buy it, they’ll have wasted that time, effort, and money that could’ve gone to something else, but that’s what happens when you make a product people don’t want. I am in awe of whoever decided the full $70 price with no options for the people who’ve bought this game already like many of PlayStations other upgraded games got.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I think a lot of it goes back to the fiasco about the PS4/PS5 cross-gen games initially costing $60 with a free upgrade, and then Sony walking that back and trying to force a $10 upgrade charge starting with Horizon (when Horizon was explicitly one of the games they noted would have a free upgrade). That backlash bit them hard enough that now every PS5 game _has_ to be $70 lest there be another backlash for hypocrisy or what have you - they walked backwards into a lose-lose, it's been morbidly fascinating to watch unfold lol

    They really had the chance to make this game more replayable. they could've added another little dlc for tess or bill. what i personally wanted was more replay value by adding closed weapon and item sets after beating the game at "HARD" and "SURVIVOR". then you would have 3 weapon sets and 3 item sets and you would be able to choose which set you would want to use. I know it would need a lof of tweaking so that the game doesnt break or get too easy/hard. but it would would be cool if they did it in a way so that it doesn't feel the same as in the base game (more challenging perhaps). But it would have so much more replay value, for example:
    base weapon set => set 2
    handgun => same
    revolver => same
    hunting rifle => a revolving rifle (doesnt deal as much damage as the bolt action rifle, but has bigger ammo capacity)
    bow and arrow => throwing knives (short range but instant kill for human enemies)
    shotgun => double barrel shotgun (more need for reloads, but does more damage)
    shorty => / couldnt think of a replacement but i would want to see it replaced
    el diablo => / couldnt think of a replacement but i would want to see it replaced
    flamethrower => taser gun (stuns for a short period of time, direct contact is needed for a kill; can have a long range mod that does less damage but stuns for a longer time (ammo = batteries))
    Base item set => set 2
    shiv => lockpick and rope (for picking doors and for strangling, does not work on clickers, rope can be used to reinforce melee weapons)
    Medkit => unchanged
    molotov => liquid chemicals (causes chemical burns, does damage over time, enemies are less accurate)
    nail bomb => a sticky bomb ( needs the barely used sugar item in the game to stick it to places or people while sneaking)
    smoke bomb => flash bang (doesnt explode instantly (2-3s), shorter range, does not work out in the open, does affect the player and allies if cover is not taken)
    or a makeshift weapon set where every weapon is make out of scraps like the flamethrower or the weapons in metro. it would be so cool finding them and seeing joe surprised by the ingenuity of people. The collected weapon parts would then be used for upgrades but also for repairing your guns.
    For example:
    - a harpoon gun: a broken rifle with a bigger barrel and an air tank to shoot arrows at high speed
    - a taser gun: made of a taser, batteries and a small knife to kill people effectively
    - a modified nail gun: like in metro to silently kill ennemies but with less ammo and slower. less range and less accurance the further you need to shoot
    - a single shot handgun with 3 barrels
    - the flamethrower
    - a revolver with 2 chambers: can hold 12 bullets at once.

    Can’t deny how beautiful the game looks BUT increased graphics and mostly quality of life improvements do not justify the price of $70, a price of a brand new game. They are charging more for this remake then they did when the game came out as an original game back in 2013, and the price is more than what last of us part 2 was when it came out as an original game. Maybe justifiable for first timers but this could’ve been an EASY recommendation for EVERYONE if the asking price was $30, $40 max. I’d rather pay full new game price of $70 for a game like God of War Ragnarok or a game that has been putting work and resources towards something that is a brand new experience that is truly from the ground up from the writing, story, voice acting, motion capture, new levels and combat design, audio. A game like that, for me justifies a $70 price tag but not one like last of us part 1 because they just improved fidelity and added mostly quality of life improvements.

    I’ve felt since the announcement that this game just did not feel nessessary to make a remaster for. There are dozens of other games in their past that haven’t had their original IP’s touched in years. Jak and daxter, ape escape, parappa tha rappa, and many others are left dormant after so long, and seeing the trailer for a game that you can still play the original on the previous gen made me felt a little defeated on playstation stuff. It’s like when spiderman came out for the first time on ps4, and not so long afterwards they release it again, for some reason. Probably due to the spiderman movie or something. In any case, i didn’t feel so much hype for that game over the original because the remaster came out not so long after the original. The only difference was that the remaster to spiderman kept all the post launch dlc and added new content to gain further hype.P, whereas the last of us remaster had intentionally left it narrowly different from the original that it only stands out as just LoU but with minor graphical tweaks.

    • @gaminggladiator06
      @gaminggladiator06 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KaminoKatie well, when you think about it, it really wasn’t necassary. You can still play original TLoU on ps5, it was even in the ps5’s reveal trailer that it’s one of the games that you can load from 4 to 5, so anyone that owns the game would have it on ps5.
      If anything, they should’ve probably just put the game on discount or something, in commemoration for their new upcoming show.
      If you buy this, you’re essentially buying the same game, just with graphical upgrades. Sure they added a few things from part 2, but it’s not exactly a big enough change to warrent a making another copy. They could’ve just made an update to the original game that added all that to it as optional changes.
      And you really can’t say it’s warrented because this version is way too similar to the original. The director himself said that he wanted the game to be so much like the original that players wouldn’t know the difference. And that’s just the problem, what’s stopping players from getting the original instead if it’s all the same experience.
      And i still stand by my thought of bringing back old IP’s or simply making remasters for them.
      You honestly can’t sit there and say that you wouldn’t like to play a remaster of jak and daxter. The only reason you’d be against this is if you never played the game before, and considering we’re even having this discussion, I’m pretty much right on the money.

It’s a no brainer for me, since it’s my favorite game of all time and if it’s even a little bit better, I’m in for $1000 if I have to be…but for the average player that thinks it’s really good and doesn’t touch the game for 7 years…yeah, the ps4 remaster still looks good. i've never played or watched any playthroughs of either 1 or 2. all i know of the story is the virus/fungus thing that's essentially creating zombies, she is immune which means possible cure which means Joel has to take her to some lab or something and the game is about their journey there. i purposely kept myself spoiler free after all these years because i was so sure i was gonna play it, and i'm not quite sure why i've been procrastinating so hard, but i know one of the biggest reasons was not wanting to deal with ps3 buggy gameplay and worse graphics. so maybe while i was never the intended audience of this remake, an exact copy of the original game but with better graphics and smoother gameplay couldn't be any closer to what i'd want. so yeah, glad i know that this is out. i'm gonna have to get started on it

      If it's any help, I'd stop reading the replies to this comment after this one, just in case somebody tries to spoil it just to be a dick. I avoided II spoilers with the intent of waiting a year to play the game (I waited a year to play the original game because I wanted to see how it was once there was less of a hype circle influencing me back then), only for a random Twitter mutual to ruin it for me by just Tweeting it out. If you've avoided it this far, don't let now be the time when it gets ruined!

    Im glad you got a review code for this game. And if people loved the last of us 1 and want to buy it I respect it.
    But in my opinion i not the biggest naughty dog fan, loved the uncharted franchise & the original crash team racing on ps1 but I’m not the biggest fan of the ps1 crash bandicoot platformers and I’ve played the jak games on ps2 but barely next to ratchet & clank or sly cooper.
    I originally planned to buy the last of us 1 on ps3 but i got it when I bought my ps4 back in 2015 with gta5 and after part 2 i just don’t want to play part 1 ever again! I know this ps5 port exists because of the hbo show and I heard this remake really a cash grab in my opinion, we could got uncharted 1 remake or days gone 2 but neil druckmann don’t care about other ips that’s he didn’t create. I wouldn’t mind to try it but only if it’s gonna be free on Playstation Plus Essential because I already own the ps4 version since i got my ps4 day 1 and I’m not gonna buy this game again especially when i know the main character died in part 2.

  • @LamestLameOK
    @LamestLameOK 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel that in the future this remake will be appreciated more. It's only because this is coming off the heels of TLOU2, and the whole controversy surrounding it. But eventually, in the same way the PS3 version is starting to show its age, the PS4 remaster won't stand the test of time as well. So this being remade early on is both a bad thing because it's kind of unnecessary in the here and now, but also good because they didn't wait until there was high demand for a remake. As for the price, I mean come on. Sony unlike Nintendo actually drop the price of their games as months pass. I bet you sometime this year the game will be $20. Meanwhile Nintendo is still charging full price for remasters of WiiU games that came out in 2014. So the price is no big deal to me because Sony exclusives drop in price fast.

    I have no opinions on TLOU, it never interested me, but I cant help but agree with the cynical view that this remake wasnt neccesary now. I know some games got remade in a much shorter timeframe on stuff like the 6th generation, but those remakes often felt like they made much bigger changes than just graphics and also werent as readily available on their release platforms compared to TLOU on ps5. The REmake comes to mind.
    But I was never going to be a consumer for this in the first place so what do I know.

    I think the only reason im getting it on remastered edition is because I have a PC and I could play it on my Steam Deck. Its still £60 without the DLC. I just am waiting for a sale tbh. Its disgusting tbh that DLC is not included in the remaster.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's a phrasing issue - the Steam page is doing the gross "upsell the Digital Deluxe version" spiel, but the base game of the PC version explicitly says on Steam that it includes Left Behind. The problem is that both the regular page and the Digital Deluxe DLC page on the Steam store are saying "buy the Deluxe" without clarifying what specifically is in Deluxe.
      The Digital Deluxe stuff, from what I remember of the PS5 code they sent along, is just about identical to what they're offering on PC, it's just early crafting materials and some skins. So don't worry, Left Behind is in fact part of the remake on PC! (Note that they didn't send codes out to creators for the PC port presumably because they knew they were sending out a game that had a bunch of graphical bugs, so I haven't played it, I can't speak to the bugs or anything there. They send me PC copies even when I don't ask, so when they didn't send that one along I had a bad feeling even before it dropped.)

    Got it and I love it. To each their own but I saw more than enough visual upgrades alone that I decided it was a day one for me. I liked the original game but I never had that awe factor that so many were clamoring over. I guess the combat in the original reminded me too much of Uncharted, which I couldn’t stand, so I pushed through playing the original just because I liked the story and exploration. I’m just past the Bill episode and can’t say I have any regrets - it just feels like a superior product in every way. Everything feels smoother, combat feels less arena-like and visually, while it feels familiar, it feels like I’m playing a brand new game.

    A remaster that only exists for money. The game isn't dated graphically or gameplay-wise, has basically zero new content, and Naughty Dog knows that they could just put a $10 price tag for PS5 for who owned the original or PS4 version.
    And don't let anyone hear this, but The Last of Us isn't even that good of a game.

    Yaknow I magically get the feeling that we’re going to be seeing this game a hell of a lot more, like Skyrim levels of rereleases…. So I’m just not going to buy it again, nor am I going to support the franchise by spending money on something I don’t like.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Now I get to remind you that I didn't say anything about Ellie's voice! I was commenting on how early trailer Ellie looked much more like _Elliot_ Page to the point that literally everybody joked about it (including Page, who implied it bordered on legal issues in an AMA I believe around the release of Beyond: Two Souls). Over time from early builds to the final PS3 product to Left Behind to the remaster and pretty definitively by Part II and now the remake, her look was continually adjusted away from the Page inspiration - helped by the improved tech allowing for better face captures which in turn led to her look shifting more towards Ashley Johnson directly. Anybody who was around when this game was announced can remember that the Ellie/Elliot Page comparisons were inescapable for a good few years!
