Even the idiots who promote “all natural” products will tell you it just means naturally occurring. It’s like y’all create your own definitions for these terms.

Wow, I had a similar situation with TCM! My ex-wife took me to a TCM doctor, and told me it was a normal doctor (I was new to China). They injected some cow bezoar medicine for a throat infection. First time, it made me itchy, and I've never been allergic to anything so I didn't make the connection, and just trusted the doctor. Second time, they gave me the same damn thing, and of course I almost died. When I fainted, they took out the IV thing (whatever you call it), and I recovered, luckily. What did they do next? Injected it again. And *somehow* I didn't die. This doctor was apparently one who also works in a normal, western medicine hospital. She said I was just "scared of the medicine" and that's why I almost died.
Okay the situation's very different actually, but I mean similar in that I'm not allergic to anything else, and almost died. :p

FYI The biggest issue with traditional medicine is the inability to control dosage. Many traditional medicines have been studied that show correlations to the claimed benefits but many have not. The biggest issue with studying natural resources is the difficulty in studying the active ingredients without isolating them. Maybe with the use of AI science will begin to be able to understand complex substances and their interaction with our variable physiology.

Traditional medicine was popular in the part of Romania I grew up in. Things like taking the new green bud things off of evergreen trees and using them, a ton of sugar and, a bit of water to make cough syrup, or putting mint leaves into a bowl with boiling water then placing a towel over your head and the bowl and breathing in the fumes.... usually harmless stuff they had to do because communist and post communist medicine was so terrible and Doctors and nurses could buy their positions in hospitals. It was always sad to see.

I find it strange that Chinese traditional medicine has kept the useless and outright harmful practices and recipes. My own culture has "old" medicine from pagan times, but the recipes that have remained, are actually useful, due to minerals, vitamins, hot vapors etc. Not as effective as modern medicine mind you, not claiming otherwise. But the harmful practices were filtered out, I'm sure my ancestors were trying cow-wee to cure toothache etc but since it didn't work, it died out. Chinese traditional medicine seems to have different approach, believing old knowledge over empirical evidence. This is unexpected considering how advanced chinese culture used to be

Why would you drink snake venom? Why?
I was a volunteer wildlife rescuer as a kid, literally it was demanded we take an extensive snake envenomation and snake handling course. You'd have to handle tiger snakes and the like, incredibly dangerous animals. Snake venom crystallizes even on the bags you use to scoop up snakes so you can't even touch it with ungloved hands, because all it takes is a little of those crystals in a cut or scratch and you can get sick.
    .
Drinking snake venom, I'm surprised it was only C-Milk that started displaying signs of envenomation.

The real TCM involves a very detail diagnosis and personalised prescription. And on top of herbs a lot of TCM ingredients are minerals (actual ore), poisons (like arsenic), toxic plants, processed faeces, etc. I would say it would be equally dangerous if you just let people take random drugs and pills for "the maintenance of healthy body", like there were more than one incidence in which kids were intoxicated by vitamin A supplement which can be lethal. It's more about how people perceive the art of TCM. You can't just put random shit in your system and expect it to work the same for everyone because that is not how TCM works. I agree a tighter regulation could solve this issue.

What really sucks is that conservation efforts can only go so far in maintaining nature reserves and populations of endangered species. Look at how impossible it is to get Pandas to mate. And even if poaching is stopped, human civilization will inevitably continue to grow and consume wild territory where the animals once called home. We should prepare to say goodbye to a good deal of animal species in the near future.

To clarify about the rhino part, there used to be a large population of different rhino species across South and SE Asia (they still survive in some area), but not China. So in ancient time, those rhinos usually get captured and delivered to China as tribute from the vassal states or their horn get traded to China. The Chinese and cultures related to them tend to believe that the rarer and exotic some thing is, the more nutritious and highly medicinal value they are. Like how the horn of the unicorn can give you immortality in ancient Greek; the rhinos horn got treat as a rare and valuable medicine ingredient across China and Vietnam to a certain extent. The locals in those reason poached them into extinction, and then they saw the African rhinos, with bigger horns too. So, bigger is better right? That's probably what happened imo.

After no success with arrogant Western doctors, Chinese acupuncture helped me a lot with my health problems. The problems were stress-related and so violent that I failed to acknowledge the mental factor. However, my acupuncturist relieved a large chunk of my physical symptoms with acupuncture while telling me to be aware of what emotions trigger physical symptoms. My life has improved considerably thanks to her.
Her teacher actually learned from masters of pre-1949 Chinese medicine in Taiwan.
Regarding herbs, my acupuncturist, who is also teaching me Chinese medicine, explained that the Chinese view of herbs is observation-based and not about blind belief which causes hunting rhinos because of alleged magical powers. Before the advent of Western science, the ancient Chinese classified herbs according to their observed effect on the body. For example, ginger and garlic are classified as "hot", meaning that they are good for people with "cold" symptoms like loose stools and chilliness. This also means that if a person is suffering from "hot" symptoms like thirst, constipation and restlessness, ginger would make their condition worse. This can easily be tested in daily life.
I condemn the use of animal parts for "TCM" because doing so is unnecessary and Chinese medicine can do without it and clinging on to such harmful practices despite being debunked by science goes against the very essence of Chinese medicine, which was to gather facts and explain them with the scientific tools that are available.
