It's important to note that the HCM Trail is different from the HCM Road. The HCM Road is the western mountain road that is entirely within VN's borders. The HCM Trail is mostly in Laos and Cambodia.

When people are surprised re: Americans in Vietnam because of the war. I always think, Vietnam fought one war with the US. They've fought like 20 with China and have been under Chinese domination multiple times over the centuries
And the Vietnamese are determined not to let it happen again.🇻🇳🤝🇺🇸
the hate for Americans seemed ironically because Vietnam along with her allies were spreading the war into other countries.
Also, it wasn't a straight up war with the US. It was commies trying to take over and the US getting involved. Not the same as a straight up war or invasion. Look at North and south Korea. Vietnam could have turned out as bad as north Korea. Luckily even tho taken over by commies its path differed from Korea. But no one would act like the US went to war with Korea (as a whole and as asingle reigning government). The US interjected itself in an existing conflict. Not the same as if the US were to go to war with a country that currently had a stable singular government. I am sure the South Koreans are very happy to not be living under North Korean rule, and the US helped them achieve that.
The Vietnam war was nothing to do with USA, they put themselves into it.

It's important to note that the HCM Trail is different from the HCM Road. The HCM Road is the western mountain road that is entirely within VN's borders. The HCM Trail is mostly in Laos and Cambodia.
We also had a HCM sea trail in the American war. It’s called that because the North Vietnam Army would send supplies to the south via “No Number Ships”. The no number ships are just in name only. They were all marked with fake numbers to hide their true identity. A lot of them disguised as fishermen boat.

@@timothyspool1399 Exactimundo! That was the whole point of the trail. I guess a lot of it was about getting around Quang Tri and the other central provinces...where most of the American troops were.
I’m a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War 1967 through 1969 (2 one year tours). Stationed with a Marine helicopter group 5 miles south of Danang and wounded during 1968 Tet Offensive. Have not been back to VN in 54 years but now look forward to returning. My wife of 54 years is Taiwanese and is also wanting to visit. Plan to go in 2024. Thanks for all the positive feedback about current conditions in Vietnam-very encouraging.

I fell in love with Vietnam the first time I went there during Tet 2018 on a holiday from teaching in China. I went back a few more times, definitely came to prefer it to China and then moved there just before the Pandemic. Super friendly people, no one will hassle you, except to buy you drinks! I love it and have many good Vietnamese friends now. I highly recommend a visit!!
I have been staying in Vietnam ever since I was born. There are a lot of things I have to consider
My first roommate in college was Vietnamese. He and his older brother escaped Vietnam and left his mother behind. His name was Stevie and he was craaaaZy. He was short and thin, but he could trash talk like a pro with his Vietnamese accent. He basically became a mascot of the dorm floor. After watching Full Metal Jacket, he asked some guys to shave his head so that he could look like the American soldiers from the film. Of course it made him look like a Buddhist monk. He was a wild guy.
Part of Vietnamese here, they-we are still a developing country. Yes as you can see, we are still dirt poor and messing with modernizing the country. Yes, there is a history of cross-part with the u.s with war ( no matter what side of that war ), but most Vietnamese are friendly with the West and people.
So if you guys are out there looking for a crazy communist country like North Korea or china then we think it is wrong. And also Vietnam is not a friend of communist china, despite the fact that both countries ruling by a dictator communist party. Red Vietnam is very anti china ( yes there are relations with the state but like you know it's all politics ), and the population is very and very anti red china aggression and very anti china. What can you blame?
The history of conflicts and wars between Vietnam and China dates back 2000 years ago and still going, it should be one of the longest conflicts in human history dating back far older than julius caesar is still alive and keep going today.
I sincerely hope you guys don't do the same mistakes China did and go on that steady path, Vietnam has a lot of potential and well, no one is truly a winner in war (I mean, in the sense of casualties).

I have lived in Vietnam since 2005, and the majority of changes have been positive.
Well, since serpentza asked... On the night of Christmas day, 1776, George Washington led his troops across the Delaware river, the border between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Up until that point the US continental army had suffered defeat after defeat and Washington was under pressure for a win. He came up with this plan and his army crossed the river in freezing cold weather in the middle of the night. To make a long story short, they attacked and defeated a group of about 1400 Hessians in Trenton, NJ, a big success and morale booster for Washington. Hessians were basically German mercenaries working for the Bitish. There is a State park at the crossing location today on the Penn and NJ sides of the river.

I have a hard time believing that Viet Nam is anti-American in 2010? I know a ton of veterans who say they have never heard a mean word said to them on a visit (1990 and recent). As you said, they share a type of bond with the Americans, as they bled together. Often enemies become the greatest of friends.
Not really, Vietnamese do not hate US (aside from a minority brainwashed bull/cow/calf). We all know the majority of our well being come from US (also know IT was a bloody civil war). We are rather fond with American.
Simply, all Vietnamese people are influenced by Ho Chi Minh's ideology, which is patriotism, patriotism, heroism, they respect Uncle Ho and follow his teachings. want to make friends with all countries and peoples in the world

Why does serpezeta, downplay his South African heritage? I’ve never thought anything negative of South Africans, even during apartheid when I know they were just trying to keep themselves safe. They were right! Now South Africa has the highest murder rate in the world.
I completely agree. My husband is related to DF Malan who I guess codified apartheid as Prime Minister. Now we see why they did it to begin with. South Africans are always the nicest and best people I've ever met.

Currently in Vietnam on vacation and having a wonderful time. I’ve been to China and Japan and I have to Vietnam is my favorite Asian country so far. It is the best of both worlds; tradition and modernism. People just seem really happy here and the economy seems to be doing well
Been to Northern Vietnam as well. Both culture and nature are nice, if you like green mountain everywhere consider visiting Taiwan

I had similar concerns before going to VN the first time: As an American, how would the people react to me? I never once felt unwelcomed there, and never saw any hint of resentment or negativity. VN is a great place to visit, and the people are wonderful.
They are apathetic towards Americans. They won the war so they don't really think about you at all. They look up to Japan and Korea, and welcome American tourists for their money.

@@cafelatte5039 I am speaking from my own experience. How do I know if Vietnamese like Russians, Chinese, Black, viet kieu, rich, poor, disabled. Wait, I know they don't care about disabled people, shocking that their own disabled people get no help.
My wife is Vietnamese, we finally went back to Vietnam after the pandemic and .. it has changed a lot the last 4 years. At least in the south. The economy is obviously booming. I'm not sure if it's all good. Used to be mainly bikes/scooters, now a lot more people have cars. There's no infrastructure for cars .. except maybe for the new district in HCMC. But Vietnam is for sure a wonderful country to travel in. Great food, beautiful nature, welcoming people. Beautiful beaches where you can swim alone in winter .. since noone else but a Nordic guy seems to think +15C is a nice bathing temperature.. Anyway .. the best experiences of my life has been in Vietnam, highly recommended travel destination.

So awesome guys. I'm going to Vietnam for the second time, next month, and I'm going to Hanoi instead of Ho Chi Minh city where I went last time. I'm really excited to go back to Vietnam and totally agree I love how friendly the people are. I will be there for 10 full days with a friend of mine, so we plan to explore a little bit. I even practiced Vietnamese over the past few months to learn a few words and can hopefully navigate a little bit.

From so many stories I have seen, I am very impressed by the Vietnamese people's ability to forgive. There are so many instances of veteran's on both "sides" coming together that will bring tears to your eyes. My mom's boyfriend was a helicopter pilot and was shot down 3 times and took a lot of bullets, and survived. He has no animosity at all. I have relatives who died there. I can't grasp exactly what is going on. Someone needs to do a documentary on why the Vietnamese and Americans have such personal respect for each other. There is a story here someone needs to tell.
Respect as brothers in arms who fought hard and really understand the horrors of the war maybe.

He has passed away but, I personally knew someone who volunteered to go to Vietnam as a marine 4 times because his brother was killed there (see the name Dube' on the Vietnam Wall). His son, rip, one of my best friends, a marine also , told me, he believed his father and his uncle repeatedly volunteered to go back because they wanted revenge for the death their brother. but had no ill will toward the people. I think there is a big story here.

@hubrisnaut8426 It's not about forgiveness. It's about learning the truth. After the war, Norther Vietnamese learned that Southern Vietnamese owned TV, radio, fridges, AC and cars, and motorbikes whereas Northern Vietnamese owning a bike was considered a success. There was a story that a Northern man who moved to South Vietnam when asked how marriage was organized in North Vietnam. He said my marriage ceremony was so luxury. There were totally 10 bikes to take my family members to see my wife's house.
Thus Northern Vietnamese began to question why we were so poor and we claimed we liberated them from puppet government and American imperialist. Nowadays Northern Vietnamese people are happy if one of their family members gets married to Europeans, Canadians, Australians or Americans. If he/she marries a Russian national it's considered a poor choice.
When school teach us history about the war, they make very very clear that the aggressor was not the country as a whole and it was only the government's fault that the war happend. We even get to learn how American stood up to their government and demanded peace. Also, it is our culture to forgive but not forget.
I miss this kind of content so much.

I have been to Vietnam twice and everyone is so friendly. I have never had a problem with anyone, no bad vibes from people.
Spent a month in Vietnam last year. Absolutely phenomenal place to visit. Highly recommend.

@@dayal2293 Depends what you want. North around Hanoi for that chaotic "communist" vibe similar to China. South is a little more open and friendly (honestly everywhere in VN is friendly) but also more expensive. I would recommend the central area around Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An because it's stunningly beautiful and there's still loads to see and do.
Vietnam is one of my favourite places I've been.

I lived in Vietnam for 18 months as a child circa 1983. My mother was American (father Danish) and we were generally treated very kindly. Most hostility we got came with insults for being Russian. When we said we were not they stopped throwing stones and so on.
What was their problem with Russians? Did you live in southern Vietnam?

@@BountyFlamor The Vietnamese like Americans because they understand that Americans were actually trying to keep the Vietnamese free just like Americans did in South Korea. Free from the Communism the Russians and Chinese were pushing on Vietnam. The sad thing is so soon after Americans lost so many tens of thousands keeping South Korea free it didn't want to pay that high a price again in Vietnam.

My experiences in Vietnam is also that they consider the Vietnam War water under the bridge. Besides they won that war, and I think that might make them less sore about it.
But when it comes to China ... hoh boy. They don't like the government, and they don't like the tourists.
Then you go to Cambodia, and the main prejudice you meet there is against vietnamese. Just weirdly strong and negative for as far as I could tell pretty vague reasons.
It's kind of a weird relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia. Vietnamese generally look down on Cambodians because they have darker skin, different traditions, similar to how Chinese look down on Vietnamese. Combine the fact that Vietnam utilized the Ho Chi Minh trail thru Cambodia, which allowed the US to involve itself in Cambodia. The Vietnamese invasion during Khmer Rouge also killed many civilians, and many people who were made into ultra-nationalists by Pol Pot still hold resentment towards Vietnam. Cambodia basically views Vietnam as the imperialists of SE Asia.

Another complicating factor might be that the vietnamese were sovjet clients during the cold war and viewed China as the original colonial power, while Cambodia used to be chinese clients more than sovjet's.
1976-1979: More than 20,400 Vietnamese at the border were killed by Khmer Rouge soldiers. More than 3 millions Cambodians were killed by the Khmer Rouge.

@@dr.woozie7500 I know I cannot represent the entire Vietnamese population but from my perspective, 34yo Vietnamese, born in Hanoi, raised in Saigon, living in Saigon at the moment, none of my relatives and friends looks down on Cambodians. When the elders in my family talk about Cambodia, they mainly tell us stories about how their relatives didn’t want to participate in another war so soon but the Pol Pot were so cruel to their own people and to Vietnamese at the border they couldn’t sit back. Some of them died there but those who came back told us the same story that they feel sorry for the Cambodians who suffered under Pol Pot. My husband’s uncle died in Cambodia. He was young. He just wanted to protect people. He didn’t have a chance to start a family and live in peace. My friends usually talk about planning to travel to Cambodia, wanting to see Angkor Wat… The Vietnamese I know don’t speak ill of Cambodian.

I’m vietnamese/american born and raised in vietnam till 18 moved to texas. The vietnam war taught in vietnam doesn’t like to focus on the battles that the north won. We were taught why we fought, we were taught of how our country had its entire existence under siege/colonized by other greater powers and the vietnam war is the result of many years being ignored/used by the west. We asked the US for help since America is the beacon of freedom and liberty, but instead they decided to take over what the french couldn’t do and made it sounds like they were liberating us.

I agree with much of what you’ve said except your last comment about the U.S. simply taking over from the French…the NVA were initially supported by both Communist Russia and Communist China. The U.S. saw a probability that all of Southeast Asia would fall to the Communists…while we made several mistakes in supporting the corrupt regimes in the South over 10 years, the U.S. mission was to stop Communism and, tangentially, help the South Vietnamese. We let the politicians run the war instead of our military and ended up losing to the Communists and hurting the South Vietnamese and American morale in the end. Hopefully Vietnam will become more open and people like myself will support it more diligently.
That is because the VC and the NVA did not win many battles against the US and SVA armies. Don't blame the US for the lost. South VN govt, people and some military officers were not capable. I look at Afghanistan and I see a repeat of VN.

I miss Viet Nam every day. I was in Hanoi and Saigon, and found both places to be incredible. Not a single day goes by where I don't think about the beauty of Viet Nam, plus all the delicious food. I went to Japan, it was alright, didn't do anything special for me, but Viet Nam, whoa, one of my favorite places.

In Japan, things are great but it all feel too comfy, highly regulated and consistently nice......... In Vietnam tho, you just don't know what to expect, so new young travelers should go to Vietnam first to get a higher variety of traveling experiences so you won't be forming ur own bubble of how the world is (meaning Japan is the exception, not how a typical country is)

Thanks for your trip down memory lane for me! I’ve been to Vietnam more times than I can count. I married a woman from Hue (still married 18 years later). Been to Da Nang, spent time in Ho Chi Minh City (many still refer to it as Saigon), as well as Hue and a small village where my wife’s family is from. Been on the Ho Chi Minh trail on the way to Dong Na national park which is beautiful. I remember dodging logs, kids playing, drying materials of all sorts, and many cows as they are all using the actual road. Vietnam really tries to accommodate tourists and is thriving on capitalism. The first trip to HCM there was ONE skyscraper. My last trip there just before the pandemic, I lost count there were so many. They are still a very poor country overall, but the people are friendly, food is GREAT ( Anthony Bourdain featured Vietnam more than once on his show), and it is a beautiful landscape. One last point. The first time I was there, virtually everyone was riding bicycles even in HCM. Then, over subsequent trips, you’d see more and more motorbikes everywhere. My last trip I saw even outside the cities CARS everywhere with car dealerships in places you would describe as the middle of no where. Which is good. Traffic is very dangerous there, even chaotic on major roads. There was a stat years ago where 20 to 30 motorcyclists would die every day in just the big cities alone. I hope it’s gotten better and with cars being a little safer it should. Thanks for the memories! I travelled vicariously with you!
Having been to most sea countries. I have to disagree. Bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, move a greater volume of people.
They are a way more efficient use of resources. The same number of cars, need bigger and bigger roads, going through towns and villages, messing them up.

@@skullface215 If you see how they drive in Vietnam, it’s not all that shocking. I’ve driven in their traffic, I’m kind of a native in Saigon since I’m half viet on my fathers side. I frequently visit the country and have a home. Most times people are reckless. They’ll run red lights 80% of the time, and situational awareness is nonexistent to most of the populace. So you’ll see LOTS of accidents. Not to mention the reckless truck drivers who don’t really care to check their blind areas before making turns or changing lanes. Some will have the sense to use their blinkers, but most just don’t give a shit

Matt. I'm pretty sure you were traveling on the Ho Chi Minh Highway and not the Ho Chi Minh trail. The Ho Chi Minh trail was a system of unpaved paths through the jungles of Laos and Cambodia used during the American War. The Ho Chi Minh Highway is a paved road that runs through Western Vietnam.

I used to live in Shenzhen for 2 years and then went back to Vietnam in 2021 during the pandemic. Since then I have been living in Saigon with my family. The cost of living in 2 cities are almost the same for me since I spend more money on massages, saunas, eating out, etc compared to when I was in Shenzhen. Sometimes I do miss Shenzhen with the nice night view of high rise buildings and the view to Hongkong but things are great in Vietnam. Probably will visit China again at the end of the year

Just left Vietnam yesterday.I also did the Ho Chi Minh trail/road for the second time, a must do ride. I have been there 6 times and yeah the north and south are very different. I too prefer any place north of Da Nang. Great country, great people, with a good future ahead

I lived in Ha Tinh in the north where the weather, people and food are so different compared to the south.
I have been traveling to VN on and off for about 30 years. During the early years, I was a serving soldier in the Australian Army and was a little apprehensive as my country had fought against the communist forces. I found no ill will from any of the locals. In fact, when some locals found out I was in the Australian Army they were overly welcoming and even organised some get togethers with some old boys who were former NVA and VC soldiers. We all had a great old time telling war stories and engaging in drinking games.
There’s are cemeteries in Vietnam where only locals and Australians are allowed. Apparently during the war Australian soldiers were the only ones who were respectful enough to bury the dead. This is what my tour guide told me while I was there, not sure if it’s true.
@@pablosskates7067 I believe it is true. Also, the Australian forces in Vietnam didn't raze the villages, unlike their American counterparts. The Australians also brought doctors and medical personnel into the villages to treat the locals and there were incidents were the medics were actually treating Viet Cong who had gone incognito. I suggest these acts of humanity formed a certain level of respect between combative forces.
Australia had no business fighting in Vietnam.

I use to live in Shenzhen when Winston was there. He actually got me to move there from another city in China, Lishui . Cool water park there and almost no foreigners. I left China a bit before your guys. Now in Vietnam. Much easier to live here, but harder to make money. Almost 4 years in Vietnam now. I do miss China and how was treated. It got old at time, but looking back was fun to be token white guy.

A similar pattern happens in Mexico as well - Northern Mexico, especially the parts that are closer to Texas, are much more capitalist, pro-American, and PAN supporting than the Central Mexican core and the agrarian south of Mexico that has hosted militants like the Zapatistas

I was luck to spend almost a month in Vietnam and a few weeks in Cambodia on a University trip a few years ago. Its such a fascinating country that just operates by a totally different set of rules than anywhere else I've ever been to. It was a lot to get used to and pretty wild compared to what I'm used to but I enjoyed my time being there and I've always wanted to go back.

Actually, the Ho Chi Minh "trail" changed throughout time. It was not one single road or trail, they made new routes consistently.

Well, I did a few videos in last August/Sept 2023 if that helps show what's happened since your last visit (Hanoi area) and I might crop together a few other clips too. Vietnam reminded me a lot of China 2013ish where they are growing, wealth is moving in, its rather dramatic, fast, a 'wild west' sort of free market is all over the place.
They may call it "the American War" but it was really a civil war in Vietnam. The aid supplied to the South from the Americans was matched by the aid to the North from the Chinese and Soviets. Millions of Vietmanese did not want communism, many of them emigrated to the US after the war. I've talked to many Vietmanese emigres and they still hate the communists and often fly the South Vietmanese flag outside their homes and businesses. It's too bad South Vietnam was overrun or it would be a prosperous country today like South Korea.
Its a mirror of the current ukraine conflict, but with america in hot conflict with a proxy puppet, trained and armed. Natives will always lose the most, now just as they did then.
"Vietnamization", (the process of training and equipping the south Vietnamese) has been heavily criticized, but for all the jokes about ARVN forces that started in the 60s, they were able to pick up the slack our GIs had dropped in the 70s. They held out 2 years on their own (we even stopped supplying them shortly after withdrawing US troops) while the Afghan nationals only lasted 2 weeks.

It was the American War. We, the Americans, were nosy thinking we were some hot shit and able to do whatever we wanted. We failed to achieve the objective of the war, i.e., to stop the spread of communism. We got kicked in the ass. Some Americans, like you, still cannot accept the fact. It's time to move on, boy. Communism is just as great as capitalism. Look at Vietnam now. It's just going to get better and better. I know their success will irritate some haters 😉.

One of my Friends goes back to Vietnam every year to visit cousins. He calls them Idiots because they won't leave. Its almost like what you guys talk about with the cheap food and plenty of beer . They dont seem to care they live in what he calls a SHITHOLE.
His side of the Family left just after the Vietnam War and have lived in TX and prospered. His parents REFUSE to go back, even for a visit.
The exact mentally of thinking Vietnamese stay domestic as idiot is why most people here don't like American Vietnameses. They hate us because we are happy or something. It's maybe a shithole, but it's our shithole, and we improve it day by day. If everybody leave then it stay a shithole forever. Somebody has to do something, and true patriots build up their own home, not leave it for greener grass. There are things more important than money, like family, culture, happiness...
I've been to Vietnam in 2017 and 2018 for business purposes. First time at the airport taxi driver stole my money and act like I'm making it up and some how the money I lost magically appeared under his seat when I shout for police. Second time they said they prepared my visa and left me stranded in Cambodia for 2 weeks with only the clothes on me and acted like it was my fault even though they were doing everything and telling me nothing to worry about. Vietnamese people north or south doesn't matter usually are good people but they need to know you as a person to trust and treat you properly. If they don't know you like that good luck. They still have this clan mentality going on. If you know some Vietnamese your chances of being treated good is higher.

Washington crossed the Delaware River to surprise the Hessians in their winter quarters in Trenton, NJ. (BTW: George III was also Prince-Elector of Hannover, and hired German troops in droves).
Surprisingly about 3K of the total 30K Hessians sent there decided to stay in America after the war ended.

Me and a mate did it on the 'locals bikes' or so woth thought. It was a Vietnamese rip off of an old Honda. The brand was detech, however all the locals were laughing at us for riding them 😅 anyway they broke down all the time, had the piston changed 3 or 4 times ! Best time of my life

Regarding your comments about seeing war memorials and museums from "the other side", I often felt that way when I was in China and would turn on the TV to see a war movie about the Korean war. It was interesting to see how the American's were portrayed.

Heard from different accounts that Vietnam is like China something 20 years ago.
It's true. People were visiting China back in the 90s saying "Wow this country is developing so fast it's going to be the next Japan, etc" and look what we have now. China was a lot freer back in the 90s when the economic policies got loosened by Deng Xiaoping. The increase in power that China got on the global stage corrupted the government to an extreme level.

Don't believe the rubbish. The Americans were wanted by the south to fight the north. The tactics used were also used by the south Vietnamese forces, who were more brutal than the westerners. The north used awful tactics too.

The highest quality of the Vietnamese is forgiveness. It is remarkable and almost unique in my experience.
Simply, all Vietnamese people are influenced by Ho Chi Minh's ideology, which is patriotism, patriotism, heroism, they respect Uncle Ho and follow his teachings. want to make friends with all countries and peoples in the world

I lived in HCMC in 2000s and it was immensely memorable. Once I navigated my way through how to wave off hawkers and when locals started to realise you were an expat, things got more enjoyable. Traffic was insane but I loved the chaos and rode every day like a local. People mostly were friendly, food choice was fantastic, prices were really affordable. I was sad to leave.

Obviously, Vietnam has changed, including North Vietnam since Seamilk went there. Vietnamese are generally nice people, lovely country, interesting history and great food. I would go back to Vietnam again. But I did get scammed in North Vietnam in early 2020 (just before the Covid lockdown). It doesn't deter me, but it's no longer true than Seamilk's time.

We toured Vietnam ten years ago. They had been invaded, or occupied, by so many other nations. It was amazing to experience how open and chill they were. Just proud to have survived, and governed by their own.

I have been visiting Vietnam once in a while since 1995 and only one person was upset at me for being a foreigner. He kept calling me a Soviet
I have moved from China to Vietnam in September 2022. in the midst of harsh lockdown in China. It is not cheap here. There is no psychological terror like in China. It feels pretty normal. However. there are very difficult working conditions here. I wanted to work in a public school, I would receive salary only for 7 months in a year. When I ask other foreigners how they get by there is just long silence. Vietnamese people who offer jobs and are rich, are very similar in their personalities to Chinese - deceitful and arrogant.
There are good and bad jobs everywhere. You must have read some China horror stories with employers, but there are also decent jobs there too. VN is the same, shop around, avoid the crooks, accept the petty disorganisation and things will work out. The wheel always turns....
@@Mattsta2010 I don't need to read Chinese horror stories, I've been through them all, experiencing hostility from Chinese ''friends'', hunger, and death of family members who died on my hands during lockdowns. And I will spread awareness of the truth about Chinese monsters however those who won't believe can go and experience it themselves.

We started in Hanoi, went to halong Bay then zig zagged down to ho chi min city.
We did 1500 miles in 3 weeks and it was awesome 👌
