I wish. I inherited mine and the weather stripping looked just like his and the speakers didn't work. Within a month of getting it running I had to replace the passenger headlight motor and just had the VATS fail. Instead of jumping the VATS, replaced the tumbler, but then found the plastic in the column all cracked when we opened it.
With the exception of the VATS and speakers, pretty much everything else you brought up could be mentioned in a video for any 30 year old car. They're wear items that have in most cases lasted well beyond their designed lifespan.
Well i'd also say that a 30 year old speaker shouldn't be expected to last this long too, it's almost inevitable that the cones will be rotted out by now
I just removed 1992 era coolant hoses... theyre still good but I'm tuning up the most important things in the car and I'm surprised some stuff is still solid. Especially if you buy one bought from a grandpa type. With maintenance they last for eons.
I have owned two 86's loved both for a 40 year old plus car they were very reliable and handled like a dream, also love the way the seat holds you in corners.Take care of your car and it will take care of you ❤
I've owned a '91 Convertible for 30 years and both the radio CDM and the fuel sending unit failed last year. The fuel sending unit, living in fuel tank, was an easy fix, but the CDM was a pain to get out, since it was under the passenger-side dash. Interesting, that they both failed at the same time. I suppose that isn't too bad for a 30 year old vehicle. However, I did have to do normal tuneups, oil changes, replace tires and battery a couple of times, but I suppose those are normal maintenance items. I think the trick to the longevity and trooble-free vintage Corvettes is how well you maintain them.
' "THATS BECAUSE ITS A CHEVY BABY" Too true!! Made me laugh out loud!!! But we would have it no other way!!! My '95 C4 6-speed is my 7th Chevy... and the best car ever made!!!
I owned an '88 35th Anniversary Edition. They were individually numbered on the console by the shifter. I loved that car! Headlights worked Great! Now my '03 50th Anniversary the right headlight failed. Only thing on my '88 was alternator went, and the antenna. The roof panel, I had 2, the hard top and a smoked. Your panel is an easy fix. You can buy a replacement on eBay. Scrape the old one off with glue. Buy a can of spray carpet glue from auto parts. I sprayed new glue on and new headliner fit perfectly. My car had 45k miles.
Well i love my 1988 corvette don't mind spending a few dollars every now and then but have not had to i just keep my Boy well maintained and its an eye catcher!
I added a VATS delete switch and upgraded my stereo system to subwoofer and speakers with a 750 watt amps, with a new head unit that has a foldout screen with Bluetooth, front and rear video camera's, phone calling capability. Replaced the bad L98 350 with a better 88 L98, 4 bolt main bored out .040 over. Flowed the intake, and rebuilt the aluminum heads with Manley valves and Crowler rockers, with a mild Crowler cam. Designed and installed one off custom seat covers, and did the interior plastics in carbon fiber. I do R&D carbon fiber for a aircraft company and have experience in this. My 86 indy pace car has been completely taken apart and rebuilt with all the suspension rebuilt. It was a flood car when I started. All new electronics, wiring, vacume lines. Also replaced the exaughst with Magna Flow components, and new set of shorty ceramic headers with the Air tubes. Only thing I need is new paint, due to chips.
I have a 1989 with 200k miles that I have owned for 25 years. My headlight motor actuators have been epoxied but still work. I have only had problems getting vats keys duplicated but no problem with the system itself. I have replaced the water pump once. I have had no problem with my steering wheel even though I use the steering wheel to get out. I have replaced the headliner. My cup holder door is original and is working fine. My Bose is kaput. My weather-strip has been replaced once and needs it again. I have broken the mirror control knob and the glass trunnion, but no gears on my mirrors. My power antenna has given up, twice. I have never had a hiccup from my fuel pressure regulator. I guess your average may vary.
Kinda like a certain bike, drive it a day, work on it a week, but I still love my 1990 ZR-1, she sat for many years unloved, but I'm committed to bringing her back best I can, it will haul ass, love my C4. 👍👍🏁🏁
38 years and over 200,000 miles and I replaced antenna twice, and one fuel pump a year ago, along with the hood struts and convertible top with weatherstrips.
I have an ‘84 C4 (74k miles) and my headlights are a little offset and uneven when not in use. My horn fell out of my steering wheel so no honking for me. My antenna just started failing to fully erect and fully retract. Also when the weather gets real hot she only idles at 400 rpm. But man do I love this machine!
At 240,000 miles the only problems with my 89 C4 is weather stripping and antenna. Taking proper care of a car works. Oh, I have changed the shocks and injectors once at 200,000 miles. They were not bad, but thought it was time. I have had 6 sets of tires on him.
Lol love the videos you post my first car 1990 Corvette that I bought when I was 17I have had most of those problems but not all of them. It has been a fun car to have and I've enjoyed the crap out of it I've had it for six years now
I had an 87 and 88 convertible in the 90's Headlights, water pump, radiator, dash lights, other minor stuff. Pretty easy to work on. The styling was good 35 years ago but just not a fan of the C4 any longer.
My dad is the original owner of an 85 Corvette that he ordered in 1985. His vet is not insanely mint condition but it’s definitely in very good great working condition compared to yours.
My 91 corvettes Vats system failed on me at a Walmart parking lot, I was able to make my own 3 Ohms resistor and attached it into my wiring for ignition/key as well as a steering wheel wobble, made my own pins on each side of the steering column and fixed the wobble
You think the vette is bad..try looking at a British car or japanese car from the 1980's..or even a Fiat or Alpha Romero..rust buckets and the engines were crap. The Corvette has a bulletproof engine and obviously its gorgeous looks.
Hey just an off topic question.....I've watched you for a while....I'm getting ready to pick up a 2003 Crown Vic non fleet.... What can I do about the rear axle problem...the axles and bearings supposedly been replaced twice already
you forgot the rear windows struts. my vats/weatherstripping/mirrors are ok. speakers are shot. that's this weeks project. having trouble finding 3-screw speakers for the front. enjoyed the video!
Damn, the only issue of these that I have are the headlights. I have however had more engine problems. I have a low mileage example that sat for 15 years. I've had to do fuel injectors, egr, new cats, fuel pump, fuel filter, cap and rotor, IAC, and am currently working on changing the head gaskets. Fun cars, but be prepared to constantly work on them.
It's better to buy a Corvette with normal mileage . The car is made to drive not sit in a garage for 6 months a year. Why buy a vette if your not going to enjoy driving it? The fluids need to circulate for proper lubrication. You will have more repair cost just to get a never used vette on the road than a vette with say 80,000 plus mileage. The price you pay for a vette that has been driven normally is a lot less and will be in better condition.
Dude I’ve replaced fuel pressure regulator alternators starters fuel injectors egr valve radiator master cylinder and break booster fuel pump and I have an insane amount of oil leaking onto the exhaust so she smoke lemme tell you if you plan on driving that car a lot be prepared for more expensive suprises
