i wanna make something clear...although theres alot wrong with the white C4 i purchased ive been daily driving it for months now WITHOUT any mechanical or transmission issues...yea its rough around the edges...but still gets more looks than most cars on the road today. and has not left me stranded. and most importantly its an absolute blast to drive.
All that really matters is that you are happy with what you bought... I was simply suggesting spending a considerable amount more money and not only do you have a head turner like you mentioned... you have a Corvette that still has respectable power and engine durability in spades... the world records still stand for a "production car" that holds the 24 hour endurance record... imagine driving from LA to NY and back to Detroit in 24 hours... over 4200 miles averaging over 175 mph with a stock engine pulled off the assembly line for a cosmetic blemish and then installed in a purposely prepped 1990 ZR-1... That means you can drive a legendary Corvette for a fraction of what they cost new back in the 90s. With over 350,000 C4s built in 13 years it shouldn't be hard to find one that works for you without spending a small fortune.
My 95 C4 had that column problem. Not as bad, but, it was loose. The tilt gets jacked up because people tend to use the steering wheel as a handle to support them as they get in and out of the car. NEVER do that. Luckily, mine could get repaired, that looks like it needs a whole new column...
I’m still holding on to one. I haven’t bought it, but lemme tell you, she’s my summit car. She’s a 1990 C4 ZR1 with 90k miles and selling for 11k. As a teen I don’t gots the cash money, but oh, if I did, I wouldn’t think twice about picking her up.
Definitely pick up a corvette. I had a hemi Challenger throughout high school and lemme tell you you get some good attention being a kid with a cool car like that
I love the C4 and it's my passion from when I was a kid. I have a '89 and '90 and know them inside and out. Nice video and you're correct- owners need to have a few bucks and talent on the wrenches to have them looking and running like the red car. The unemployed guy in the trailer park owned the white one and couldn't afford the upkeep on an old car.
I have a '95 LT1 A4, and was highly surprised to discover that, in acceleration, a new F-150 Raptor (twin-turbo V6) has me dead. I can, however, gap him in the Twisties... XD (I discovered this on a back road random encounter). I doubt the LT4 is enough faster to be safe from these current high-end 'sport' pickups.
A lot of C4's do that steering wheel thing. Big guys keep using it to get in and out of and wear out the shift column bushing. That's a fun repair. Can't wait to see your video on it!
U beat me to it. I've looked at some mint Co's, and have actually thought of buying 1. Sure u have to put out a few more $$$, but worth it in the long run. I thought both of this were shit.
C4's were awesome when they came, i owned two of them (85 and 92) they got even better with the intro of the LT1, 92 and up, interior was also greatly improved, arguably better than the C5 and C6 interior, which i currently own.
Hilarious! I bought an affordable 1990 ZR-1, and yea it's all true. In my cars defence it sat unloved for many years. It has 74k miles and fortunately the engine, trans, rear end are all good, but seats, carpet, weatherstripping, paint are on the list, when done I will have about half of what a nice Z is selling for now. It's a cool car, but the LT5, is rare, and expensive to fix. I'm a mechanic so I can do all my own work, saves me money, but this thing ain't no joke to work on. The good stuff, it's all here, nothing butchered, engine runs great, good clutch, trans, and rear end. And unlike the L98, this car is very fast, still holds the world endurance speed record at just under 175 mph for 24 hours straight. You did a great job in your video, I love it, and yea it's a bitch to get in and out of. Great job. 👍👍🏁🏁 I needed this today. I just wanted to clarify, I'm not bashing the L98, if ya do some research you will find it holds many of its own records. The C4 was so badass it was outlawed from sports car racing. The corvette challenge was created so they could race. The C4 was/is light years ahead of the C3, and in reality began the March to the C7, the C5 is all that was good about the C4 and much of its problems resolved. In 1982 the corvette was at a crossroads, the C4 brought it back to super car status. Both the L98 and ZR-1 are often overlooked, but that's OK because it makes them affordable, and with a few tweaks can still hold its own.
Im on a hunt for a half decient C4 possibly for a zr1. Like yours from you description. Any recommendation where should I look for? Im also a mech. so issues are not a problem
If you want most of the ZR1 performance, but with a much more amenable engine to work on, you might be inclined toward the LT4. The final version of the LT1, the LT4 had 330 HP, and came only in MT cars from 1996. Many people suggest that the LT4 might have had more like 340-345 horsepower, and been. Under-rated to not crowd the LS1. At any rate, you can get all the best factory performance parts of the C4 (ZR1 brakes were standard for the whole lineup for the last few years, Z51 suspension was independent of specific model purchased), but not have nearly as difficult a time with parts on the pushrod LT4 as the specialty LT5 will have...
Actually there are some C4's that will run you even more depending on the mileage and condition. My '96 with 63k and near new condition is around 15k book value but I would not take that for it as I spent two years looking for one with the exact options of Torch Red/ red with a 6-speed manual and the LT4 package was just an added bonus. It came with a book with papers and the original window sticker that had 41k as the MSRP which in today's money is around 55k so basically I got a 55k car for 15k and I did not hesitate to jump on it when I found it. After a little research I have deduced with some degree of guessing on attrition numbers that there are probably less than a hundred cars just like mine in existence with the mileage and condition it is in. I get compliments whenever I drive it. If you know what you want just be patient till you find it which is made easier these days with the internet.
buy a decent one 5-6k and you’ll be happy. mine is in mint condition. everything works, super reliable, took it to 2500 miles road trip through death valley, no issues. 1985 is my favorite year - you get tpi but no vats + fancy digi dashboard.
C4's are awesome, need to be thanked for every Corvette produced after June 20th 1996, were rockets in their day, surprisingly capable today, and can certainly be made to go even faster now
This was a true honest service to us C4 and C5 lovers growing up. Thank you for the laugh - I caught myself laughing about the cupholder, yelling "Put the tape back, put the tape back!"
my first car was an 85 corvette, i bought it for 3 grand. thankfully i dodged the vats key (84 and 85 didnt have it) everything worked on it except the wipers power locks power seats cruise control etc. the weatherstripping was shot so it leaked in the rain, surprisingly the lcd dash worked just fine. mines an automatic as i didnt know how to drive stick back then and i will say an auto in a c4 is dangerous. it would drop a gear or two in the corners and kick the rear end out. oh and the brakes barely worked and i even rear ended someone because of it. 10/10 would buy again
I feel your pain! I just bought an 84 vette from the junkyard. I couldn't let it go to the crusher. I paid 1200 which was alot considering the car was locked, no keys, flat tire, and I wasn't even sure if it even ran or had a transmission cuz its so low to the ground. Took about 10 mins to slim jim it. luckily no vats system so I ran to the parts store and installed a new ignition for cheap on site. Luckily it ran, but turns out it only drives in reverse. no forward gears atm. One upside is the previous owner installed aluminum trickflow heads and intake manifold. not sure why some1 would do that on the old cross fire system but hey, better for me! Over 200k on the counter, yikes!
I feel like this isn't that accurate - it makes it seem that the white car is typical: it isn't. It's shit. There's plenty of nice, low mileage C4s around because they made about 400,000 of the effers. My 91 C4 is in great condition, looks fantastic, goes and corners hard and is all the car I ever want or need. I'd recommend them to anybody who wants a serious sports car that tons of fun to drive.
I had one when I was 18. Got it for about 2k. 70k miles 4speef stick and everything worked. Eventually after a year of dailying it, it started having major issues and I had to sell it. It wasn’t the fastest thing in the world, but the torque is what makes that car fun to drive. Now I got a C3 that I love more, all original with 40k miles that I use on the weekends.
So you're saying that on a "mint" C4 Corvette the water pump, fuel reg and fuel filter are in a different easier to get to location than on a "drivable" C4 Corvette?? lmao
@@armindapereira4433 except C4 is literally the exception (like the other sport or awkwardly designed cars), doesn't seem like you know anything about cars
He probably meant having to work on them, shedding light onto the pain it can be. A 'mint' C4 may not need that maintenance yet that the budget one will.
People buy cars like that bcs they can afford to fix it up and have their own car to drive. Not bcs they want it to be perfect so it can sit in their garage 11 months out of the year. Have respect for everyone's car not just your "mint" C4.
I just bought a 96 for 7900, love it so much, putting in new weather stripping, rotors and pads, but other than that and a few minor paint scuffs it's mint.
I just picked up a C4 Corvette, 1991 Competition yellow. 6 speed manual. Has a nice borla exhaust system. Has mild cams. It was only $4,000. Its a rare color and 6 speed is rare.
Butter Toast lmao ur not wrong. I hit a wall of water yesterday, scared the shit out of me. luckily i wasnt speeding in the rain and engine didnt flood. Also unfortunately mines a convertible. Im thinking of buying a custom hardtop
Thank you so much. I found a C4 for 9k and I thought it was a little overpriced. Thanks to your video I’m going to make the offer and hopefully I get it!
Mr. Random Reviews. thanks for one of them most entertaining, realistic and well documented reivews of the Chevrolet Corvette C4 with two examples present making it easier to compare and contrast differences.
The loose steering wheel / column is from people pulling on the wheel to get in and out. Not a good idea. I'm 6'3" , and over 300 lbs (325 to 330 lbs) and I found that sitting on the sill of my '96 C4, lean back, and drop into the seat works good for getting into my car, and do the reverse to get out . Put a foot outside outside, slide up onto the sill, swing out your right leg, turn 90 degrees, and stand up. Works awesome, and doesn't damage your car. The 1992 thru 1996 C4's are the ones to holdout for. 300 horsepower in a 3,100 lb car is a fun canyon rocket. Anyone out there with any C4s, maintain it. They are great cars and deserve to be taken care of. C4s had so many engineering innovations, that there ended up being more C4's at the Corvette Museum than any other generation. They are great investments, and now is the time to buy them before more people realize what great cars they are and buy them up. Have a great Summer ... :)
investing in several different 80s gm cars are a good idea. i have an 89 camaro with really nice original paint and my mom is the original owner. its worth only like 3 grand right now according to kelly blue book but im certain it will rise in the future. people will start to appreciate the technological advances of the 80s gm cars
Gezz Man You really nail it. I know three years ago. But hey, I own a 90 and being an old car guy, I wasn't surprised by the stuff I had to fix or replace. Mine is now working like it should. Your so right about not being a first-time car and as with any old car when the hood goes up. The wallet comes out. When you get good at running parts down. You better get a manual or two, just for more fun. But even if it was a Honda. Tires, Brakes all the filters and fluids, just to be safe at the very least. The white vett you pick up would have given me pause. Just way too much going on. You're a brave soul. Stay safe Sir, and hope you get some miles with a smile when Crusen around!
I think this dude was just mad because he got scammed and is now being petty making this video, I spent $6k on a C4 with 140,000 miles and I have had little to none problems.
Bought my 84 2 years ago for $2500, redid weather strippings, new window regulator motors, new door handles and hinge pins, new water pump, dash refurb, new hood prop, new rear hydraulics, new tires, new brakes, rebuilt transmission, new shocks, new seat covers, refurbished interior surfaces, new speakers, new audio deck, replaced all A/C components. Took me two years but I feel like a real badass now for all I went through. I had to buy a C5 as my daily driver though to get me through until I finished my C4!
I’ve had my 1990 since 2004. I just put the steering column back together after fixing the wobble. I have a small oil leak in the oil pressure sending unit and I have an intermittent short in the coolant temperature sending unit. It is the most reliable car I have ever owned. The Southern California sun was not been kind to the paint on both bumpers so it could use a touch up. I have no regrets and no plans to sell it.
Got my eye on a 1995 with 85,000 miles for $12.459 targa top. And a 1995 vett with 67,545 miles for $15,495 convertible with a hard top. Yes I'm going through midlife crisis and loving it. Forgot to mention both are mint. The convertible still has the window sticker. Thank for checking the steering wheel I'll do that when I see these cars.
I had a 95 6 speed manual C4 and I loved the car but getting in and out was a PITA. Then it started leaking oil, optispark died for the second time, minor electrical issues started popping up and I finally had enough of it. I sold it and bought a 2000 C5 six speed convertible. So much easier getting in and out of, more power with the LS1 and so far, knock on wood, no mechanical issues. Much happier now. Great video!
My C4 is between $25k- $30k In immaculate condition, definitely love it. A few issues here and there, but that C4 was just abused bad. Plus they do have traction control, that one is just jacked up lol. Exactly why it was so cheap.
My neighbor and his wife are in their early 80's and still go for a drive in the 92 Roadster that they bought new. So cool however he's only had it to 100mph maybe once.
i drive an 03 mustang, and man, i'm really debating on buying a c4! been my dream car since i was like 6! doesn't have to be super clean cuz that's what i'm trying to do! i wunna fix it up to be a nice little cruise muscle car (:
Just checked my classifieds. We don't have any of the cheapo C4's (Least not cheap C4's with manual transmissions), just the mint ones. After watching this video, I'm glad I got my 350z in the end. But these cars are nice in their own rights.
I can tell you what happened to that steering wheel. I know because I did it to my '88 firebird. Using the steering as a handhold to get out of the vehicle. Over time it will damage the tilt steering. I let mine go till it eventually completely broke out on the road while I was making a turn. Lesson learned the hard way to never use the steering wheel to exit the vehicle.
I love my c4 , it takes a little work to get a lot of speed on a small block 350. I beat a lot of the newer cars on the road today. I am going to start a channel.
I picked up a 2005 C6 Corvette, 6 spd manual, 115k miles back in January 2020 for $10,800 and it was all stock and mint. Still not sure how that happened but now i'm looking for a C4 to molest for some Autocross fun. Thanks for the review and information.
Thats funny cause both the '87 5.0 Mustang GT/LX & the 5.7 IROC (which had the same Vette motor in it) both ran better 1/4 mile times (along with the Grand National) than the '87 Vette. The only thing it won was top end by 7 mph & the skidpad #'s. I've owned them all 😄
It’s so funny you started your video off the way you did because I’ve just turned 40 in for some reason. I just been really wanting to buy a C4 and my wife loves the idea Lord help us all.
I own a C3 but really like the C4...it would be the latest corvette I'd own as the C5 started the euroweenee transaxle. also, if you buy a $2000 *anything*, its gonna be crap...but the C4 does have the unfortunate rep as the skank car of choice...used to be the C3 but that finally turned the corner. but a sorted C4 is a thing to behold
C4 or c5 doesnt matter its what you want to do with the car. I had a c5 zo6 put some money on new upholstery and got my self a beautiful car with great performance .so its all in the eye of the beholder .💪💪😎✌
I've owned an 89 and a 93, both had low miles and were in nice shape. That said, they both had annoying issues, the 89 much more so than the 93. I second the recommendation of spending a bit more on a "driver" C5 as it's a better car in every way or at the very least get a later LT1 C4. In other words, buy the nicest car your budget will allow.
My C4 ran a 1.93 second 60 foot time. In perspective my friends Challenger RT ran a 2.2 second 60 foot time. You need GREAT tires for a blazing 60 foot or 0-60 time!
Just saying but that ain’t a 35+ yr old car bc that’s a 1990 corvette due to the look of the steering wheel and the dash trim as well as the back of the car. I know this is your video but don’t lie to the audience about how old the car is bc many people are in the market for these today 👍🏼
Just bought mine and super happy with it so far. 1989 6-speed. I'm not a mechanic myself, but the car seems simple enough to do small jobs myself, but I also know people and a specialised US car garage (I am in Europe) who could help me out.
I own an 87 white convertible C4, given to me from my dad. 4 years in and at 84k miles of regular seasonal use, it is extremely reliable for a sports car its age. You have to find (or come upon) the right one.
I can appreciate your sense of humor... the Hotwire scenario ! lol ! Anyway... find a nice well and .sorted out 90 to 95 ZR-1 that has been maintained... expect to spend 16 to 25K and you will have a anvil for an engine that sings a really nice song. Been driving my 3rd ZR-1 for 17 years as a daily driver and has over 180 K on the odometer and still running strong. I just took it to Bonneville to other day to spectate at the World Final of Speed. 21 mpg on that trip and I let the 400 horses out a few times along the way. I agree, don't buy a trashed C4... it will be a money pit.
I learned how to drive stick on the MR2. I never experienced that type of well chirp. What kind of MR2 did you learn to drive on? The VATS system bearly left me stranded too!
I bought a 84 c4 for 1.5k, but tow. It ran, only issue was the steering column and some interior detail. So far I've only spent about 100 dollars in the car for some parts and the column
Bruah you got Jipped man..... Sorry for your loss. Got a 1995 C4 Corvette Convertible tripple black with 160k miles and most of the stuff works on it. Still restoring my late old mans Corvett... Wish me luck PRAY FOR ME
The loose steering wheel issue is due to repetitive leaning on the wheel for "weight leverage" as you exit the vehicle. Owner should have lifted legs to the side, THEN used hands on the rocker rails to lift yourself out, NOT hang on the wheel !
I got a 1986 C4 in basically perfect condition, just had to repair AC… and also the fuse blows if you turn the fan to the highest speed for some reason lol. 31k original miles. $11.5k and totally worth it.
While many hate on the C4 it's still an iconic American sports car that was way ahead of its time. For all the things people complain about I find they all disappear once the engine fires up and I head out on the road. I can't put a price on how much enjoyment that car has given me over the years.
Mine's not mint, but my 89 is in really good shape. 59k original miles, paid about 11,500 for it. Worth every penny. Not a daily driver tho, she's my day off toy.
I've got the same white car with a 6 speed and FX3, i've owned it 31 years - bought it 2 years old with 45K miles on it in 92 and have almost put another 45K k on it 31 years later - fun cars - drive great - no power by todays standard -
What if your uncle is giving you an early inheritance? A 92 C4 convertible, triple white with 75k miles? He has replaced the optispark and water pump at 70k. It is a Florida car that has lived in an aircraft hanger. Should I accept and if yes what do you recommend I do to it 🤔?
Hey guys I just bought a 1990 corvette but I have a problem. When i turn off the car with the doors closed or drive off somewhere the cabin lights always stay on for like 5 minutes and the ajar light isn’t even on. What should I do?
I have purchase an 87 c4 convertible with a 4 speed manual transmission that look way better than most mint c4 out there... and yes it was a daily driver and I only paid $1500 for it!
30 hours a day at Subway. Now THAT's some overtime. Forget time and a half, that should be Quadrillion time, given the bending of the space-time continuum.

Who needs traction control?
I laughed when he said “my wifes 5,000lb”. Lol.
I know😹
I feel like this isn't that accurate - it makes it seem that the white car is typical: it isn't.
So you're saying that on a "mint" C4 Corvette the water pump, fuel reg and fuel filter are in a different easier to get to location than on a "drivable" C4 Corvette?? lmao
Buy any car you want and there is always parts that are a pain to remove c4 is no exception.
I mean yea if it’s a l98 to a lt1 car different engines same car
@@armindapereira4433 except C4 is literally the exception (like the other sport or awkwardly designed cars), doesn't seem like you know anything about cars
He probably meant having to work on them, shedding light onto the pain it can be. A 'mint' C4 may not need that maintenance yet that the budget one will.
Do difference between drivable and mint is how much love and effort into the car? Just take care of it?
That "driveable" car is a POS. I bet you paid nothing for it, what do you expect! My 1989 Convertible is perfect!
People buy cars like that bcs they can afford to fix it up and have their own car to drive. Not bcs they want it to be perfect so it can sit in their garage 11 months out of the year. Have respect for everyone's car not just your "mint" C4.
@@cringeavenger237 the point was all his criticism of the car as if he expected this one out of the junk yard to be awesome bud. Watch the video.
@@GarKeith did u watch the video “bud” the point was to show you what you’ll get when u get a car that can drive but is gonna need work u big dummy
Shoulda bought a 95’ like me. Way faster and more reliable, also looks much nicer inside and out in my opinion
Yep, 95 is the best year
@@YungEagle3k until you drive it in rain
Lol jk of course
Butter Toast lmao ur not wrong. I hit a wall of water yesterday, scared the shit out of me. luckily i wasnt speeding in the rain and engine didnt flood. Also unfortunately mines a convertible. Im thinking of buying a custom hardtop
You can keep your lt1 with the opti spark. Worst design ever.
You can manually turn your headlights with the knop on the gear
I loved this. I laughed so hard. My husband just bought a 95 in amazing shape but everything you said was dead on. Especially getting in and out
Gezz Man You really nail it.
Thank for checking the steering wheel I'll do that when I see these cars.
you need to replace the steering column, asap!!!
Another thing about the cupholder, if you have the 6 speed manual you have the remove a cup from it before putting it into reverse.
My C4 is between $25k- $30k
In immaculate condition, definitely love it.
I paid $1900. for my 84, I did some body and paint, replaced the weather stripping and bushings, also got rid of the cross fire for a carb.
I was gonna say. 84? Oof that crossfire.
i drive an 03 mustang, and man, i'm really debating on buying a c4! been my dream car since i was like 6! doesn't have to be super clean cuz that's what i'm trying to do! i wunna fix it up to be a nice little cruise muscle car (:
I had a1987 C4 Corvette that would blow the doors off of 5.0 Mustangs. And you are comparing your wife's F-150 to a C4 Corvette? Hmm!
I've owned them all 😄
I bought a C4 (85) and I realized how gone it was so I just added power in every way I could and went “full race car” and it’s great now
It’s so funny you started your video off the way you did because I’ve just turned 40 in for some reason.
Love my c4 1990. Absolutely no problems. Only set back which was only the first time was changing the battery.
My C4 ran a 1.93 second 60 foot time. In perspective my friends Challenger RT ran a 2.2 second 60 foot time. You need GREAT tires for a blazing 60 foot or 0-60 time!
I found one with 74,000 miles for $8998. Not the nicest but it looked real nice.
Curious to know if you still have these after 4 years, and what you sold them for if you don’t.
Just saying but that ain’t a 35+ yr old car bc that’s a 1990 corvette due to the look of the steering wheel and the dash trim as well as the back of the car. I know this is your video but don’t lie to the audience about how old the car is bc many people are in the market for these today 👍🏼
The Vats system has left me stranded as well in my 1994 Buick Roadmaster estate wagon. I went under dash bypassed. LT1 bypass mod
Smashed the like button! Awesome and honest presentation!
I love the grunts when you sit in the car. Too funny 😂
Enjoyed your informative video (lol). Owned two so far 1991 & 2002 & ready for another one again so thank God for TH-cam !
Wish me luck PRAY FOR ME
I’ve seen a 94 c4 with about 17,000 miles from the corvette dealership for about 16,000$ good deal?
I'm on my 2nd C4... I like em
The bearings in the steering column wear out on c4s if you use the steering wheel as leverage for getting in and out
The loose steering wheel issue is due to repetitive leaning on the wheel for "weight leverage" as you exit the vehicle.
If you know how to drive then it won't throw you into anything
Thank you my friend for renewing faith in my hunk of junk which only has 80,000 MI still a headache but it's getting there thank you for the video
I’m about to pick one up tomorrow. 1996 C4 Corvette for $4k
I miss my 94 Corvette LT1 ZF6 6 speed car. I plan on buying a ZR1 next
While many hate on the C4 it's still an iconic American sports car that was way ahead of its time. For all the things people complain about I find they all disappear once the engine fires up and I head out on the road. I can't put a price on how much enjoyment that car has given me over the years.
man im in NYC, can't find these 10k c5 6spd ppl keep buying, everything here is atleast 12.5k+ starting c5
Just sold my 85 was perfect for 10500. Was hard to let go but making way for another car.
Mine's not mint, but my 89 is in really good shape. 59k original miles, paid about 11,500 for it. Worth every penny. Not a daily driver tho, she's my day off toy.
I mean I love my 85 vette the thing is in like mind condition with only 38k miles
Nice review ....I love my 2020 Corvette stingray spider with 3LT Z-51 package 🔥 content coming to our channel with this car build
$10k for a sweet piece of history, that's not even too bad imo
What about the Opti Spark on the 91+?...behind the harmonic balancer. Good luck doing a tune up.
The crank seal is behind the crank pulley . No luck needed servicing the optispark , just nuts and bolts
I keep finding c4s with 50k miles in my neighborhood for 6 grand but idk if that's considered high for these
Hey guys I just bought a 1990 corvette but I have a problem. When i turn off the car with the doors closed or drive off somewhere the cabin lights always stay on for like 5 minutes and the ajar light isn’t even on. What should I do?
would also like to point out that you probably wont be using valet if you own a 3000 dollar car
