    "A horse is so sensitive, it can feel a fly, so of course it can feel that you're communicating with it". That's beautiful! I think we often forget how sensitive they are

    • @Galemor1
      @Galemor1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, spurs are meant to be like that fly, but instead of giving subtle cues, many people use them to inflict pain.
      Just like a whip is suppose to be an extension of you, to help give the horse clear direction.
      People misuse it, to create pain and fear instead..

  • @AnneAndersonFoxiepaws
    @AnneAndersonFoxiepaws 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I always said we are not as sensitive as horses because our whole body doesn't shudder when a fly lands on it! I love your videos you are so calm and no nonsense about what should be obvious to anyone who has been around horses. Keep it up girl you are the best!

    It’s the way of the future. I’ve trained both my friesians bitless and bareback. It’s so much more fun and free. Everyone looks at me like I’m a nutcase but I don’t care haha.

    • @Galemor1
      @Galemor1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      A saddle is not a torture device, it distributes your weight, so you dont hurt the horses back. It just needs to be properly fitted for the horse, and adjusted as the horse changes. If you ride bareback, you have to make sure you sit like you would in a dressage saddle, you want the weight to be carried down your inner tigh, and not on your bum.
      That will take the pressure of the horses spine, making it more comfortable for them to actually lift and engage their back. It will also stop you from bumping on their back, as your tighs, will absorbe the movement.
      Riding bareback, might make your horse backsore, as you are sitting directly down on their spine and muscles, over a small area.

    • @persephonemaeve2704
      @persephonemaeve2704 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Anne Nielsen I ride in a fitted Dressage saddle also. I get your point but I’m also 52kgs and my horses are 16.3hh 800kg plus Friesians. I’m a feather weight on them. I always start my horses bitless and bareback. I feel it’s safer to jump off rather than potentially getting caught up in stirrups. The less equipment used reduces the amount of pressure on the horse. I’m looking for a partnership and to have fun with them first and foremost. Most of the time I spend with my horses is just loving on them and liberty work. Riding is an extremely small portion and I don’t ride more than half an hour usually. My babies have it good. I assure you 👍🏻

    I appreciate that you introduce these methods to a lager amount of horseriders. As you mentioned earlier....a bit does not give you more control (if the horse goes, it goes) and I belive the healty riding with engaged hindquarter and active topline can be done also with a bitles bridle....woud be nice if you would show something about this too....thats the commen critic; without bit you cannot collect. Keep up your nice work. Rgds Mette

    I always understood the bit was to make the horse uncomfortable enough to be lead at the slightest guiding touch like that of a fly so she would be easier to control with pain when necessary . a man's way of course! It's great that Mia has these videos so each generation will follow her training in years to come. hopefully the bitless bridle and allowing the horse to choose training will be the norm. Mia is remarkable and justified in her teachings. the horses respond gratefully!

    I have a young rescue horse, a stallion I bought last year. He didn't come from a good background and certainly hadn't been ridden bitless. One day some time in July I decided to try riding bitless using a cavesson. He responded as if this was nothing new. We went ahead and started jumping, then we also rode in a field - I can testify that it's really good. I do still use bits, but particularly today I rode him bitless, and I plan to do this more. My original idea when I got him was working completely bitless but I had learned only with bits, and had no on to teach me. So I didn't have the courage at first. I was watching Mia's video where she tames a young untrained stallion almost on repeat at the time which helped a lot - and some other of her videos as well. Horses indeed must be allowed to choose...

    I live in Costa Rica now. Around horses on the farm growing up. Never liked the way horses were handled so I've never owned one. In CR they have horse parades called Tope (Toe-pay) as many as 3,000 through town centers. About 30-40% of riders are bitless. The richer the riders the more fancy the tack and of course bits, spurs, crops (small whips). But the every day folks... down to small children... often use a simple hand tied bridle or a light rope around the neck! I asked a father if he his 4 yr daughter was totally safe with no tack... in an offended tone he said, "Claro que si!" Yes of course!

      Keala, I agree with you. If your horse is highly trained they will probably carry on as normal. But riding bitless does show up where your training is still progressing. My horse has a slightly unwilling attitude sometimes and in a bit, he will bend and be very obedient to my legs, but if I get on him bitless straight away he ignores my leg steering. Bitless is something to progress to and a great goal but on most horses, will probably require a bit of additional work to persuade them they still need to listen and can't just switch off to you.

    I have struggled mightily with connection with our horse bitless. My husband also feels the horse can evade him a lot bitless. the horse will largely corners or just lean on the bitless reins, (making it too tight) and I have much more success if piloting him in a mild bit, and less struggle.

    I have a mustang. I trained her with a snaffle bit when she was 3. She is now 5 and I put a hackamore on her (bit-less bridle) and she freaked out. I worked with her for a month. She fought it the whole time. So I put her old bridle and snaffle back on her and it was like snapping my fingers.... Back to being chill...
    I felt as if she did not, no matter how much I tried to teach and help her, feel safe or secure without the bit.
    I do not like using the bit at all. I work all my horses in a hack, but this one was a bit more to handle so I used a bit because she was less confused. I have had trainers known around the world work on her to help her get used to the hackamore but she just prefers to have a bit in her mouth. I did go buy the easiest bit I could find.... She is a bit of a nervous Annie and enjoys playing with the bit. So I guess we will stick with what she feels best with.
    This was so weird to me as every horse I have owned since a child loved the hackamore once they realized how it worked. 🤷🤷
    Every horse is different indeed. Just like people, I guess.
    Thank you for all the work and videos you put out to help us Mia. I am grateful ❤️

      I mean, you choosed bascially the harshest example from all the bitless options, so of course it freaked out. Most hackamore are much harsher than a lot of popular bits, because it makes a lot of pressure on the very sensitive nose-bone of a horse. Instead of huge chank hackamore, try something like flower hackamore or even sidepull, and I promise you, that your horse will like it much better.

    My husband, before I met him, managed a ranch. He didn’t like a saddle because I was uncomfortable due to an injury.
    He often rode his horses (Had 2 working horses). One of them had an a very tender mouth. He often took him out to check fences and the ranch hands. No bridal, nothing. And of course no saddle. Interestingly he was the only one that could ride this horse like that...... until he bought a four-wheel-drive.
    Useless hated the four-wheel-drive, I was very jealous. For several weeks he would not lift my late husband near him.

    It's also often that they are used to be handled in a halter, and often when in a halter, they are expected to behave differently, to be calmer, more in tune..
    So riding bitless, is just like walking with a halter.
