I showed how to clean the potentiometer with Deoxit, based on one of your videos in which you talked about the speed problems being almost 100% related to a dirty pot. Sooooo glad you have now done a video as well, since YOU'RE the professional and you actually KNOW what you're talking about. My video has taken about a year and a half to get to 1,700 views, whereas your video is at 1,077 views in probably less than 24 hours! Haha! My channel is practically non-existent! L-A31 is a nice table . I restore turntables regulary. I have restored several in this line. I restored one and polished the lid to like new and it sold for 175$. The last table would not shut off.....even after removing the microswitch entirely. The trouble ended up being a shorted mylar capacitor....the first cap on the power board and a bugger to track down. I replaced all the electrolytics to no result, however, it did improve the stability. In the end the mylar cap fixed it. 473k ac safety cap. Another common fault in this line of JVC tables is erratic tonearm movement.....the issue is a black foam damping block on the tone arm mechanism. 2cm x 1.5cm x 1 cm thick. It gets tacky with age and sticks to the return arm and deposits tar on the post. Clean the post with alcohol. Remove the foam with a hobby knife in one piece and flip it over and stick it back in place with some double sided tape or glue. Or just replace it entirely. Maintain the correct dimensions of the original piece. Also clean the microswitch triggered by the tonearm. Lid polish.....800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000 and scratch x 2.0 on a buffer or novus 2 on a buffer. I really think this series is underrated for reliability, design and sound quality with the long ulm arm.
Hi, You really seem to know about these turntables. Do you have any service advice on a Sony direct drive PS-T22 turntable? I recently got one. It has power but the turntable platter does not rotate at all. I also need to find a head shell for it. It’s a 6mm size that is unique to some Sony turntables. Thanks, Tom
I have this jvc l-a31 and am currently having problems with the tonearm dropping onto the record. Does it just need go be oiled in some way ? Or do I need to take it apart like in your comment and clean the post and re-tape it ? Thanks for any and all help !

Bought my first new direct drive turntable in 1978, a Marantz 6150. Been hooked on direct drive ever since. Technics RS-1506US, Pioneer CT-F1250, RT-701, RT707, Nakamichi Dragon, and a Teac PC-10 cassette field recorder, all direct drive and part of my gear collection.
Nice turntable, I like the pitch control. I have a Technics Quartz locked direct drive turntable. Not top of the range but with an Ortofon cartridge sounds good. Merry Christmas everyone.
I have a Technics SL-D30 that had the same problem. I finally opened it up this Summer and found the pot is enclosed with no real opening to spray into, but I did my best, and it seems to work ok for now.
Thanks for posting. I have a different model but same issue. So I went through the same steps and got the knob turning. Although the pitch changes now, it only goes from too fast (36 rpm), to way too fast (39 rpm). It was obvious, when I played a record. But after seeing this video, I downloaded the free RPM calculator app from the app store.

I would venture to say if the TT isn't level the off set weight of the phone could have that off center 45 effect thus causing a bloated WOW and/or flutter. As I read others suggested an empty packing tape core so the phone can be centered over the spindle perhaps shifted if the phone has a heavier side. MERRY belated CHRISTMAS to everyone and a HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Aside from removing the platter, here are a few more tips to anyone servicing a record player: 1) As with ANY electronic, ALWAYS MAKE CERTAIN TO UNPLUG THE UNIT from its power supply, before handling it or picking up any tools. 2) It is recommended that you remove the stylus / cartridge / head shell assembly from the tone arm. This is typically done by turning a knurled collar on the tone arm. 3) ALWAYS make certain that the tone arm is locked down, prior to serving. This is ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT, if you don't / can't remove the head assembly. 4) For RPM calculation, I first placed a roll of tape on the platter (eye-balling it, to evenly encompass the center spindle). This allowed the height for my phone to sit level and well above the center spindle pin.
As to measuring the soeed. I have measured no difference between cenerting the phone over the spindle or placing it beside. Even way off center almost to the point where centrifugal force almost throws the phone off the platter, exactly the same measurements. The phone uses the compass to detect the speed that it is turning by measuring the Earth's magnetic fields and it doesn't care whether it's turning on a dime or turning on 100 ft radius the magnetic fields will remain the same as long as the phone is actually turning around so you could Mount the phone in your car and crank the wheel and cut donuts and it would tell you the revolutions per minute that your car was spinning. Now if you have a really weak turntable then possibly the weight shifting could affect it but any half decent turntable will not matter whether the phone is centered or sitting beside the spindle you will get exactly the same results.
@@12voltvids I heard you mention "balance" , with regard to the platter. So I figured the phone will certainly change the balance, and I saw a solution sitting on my bench.
@@davidmichael1951 perhaps on a plastic platter but any proper platter worth being on a turntable will not be affected. For those that just have to center it, a roll of tape, or spool of solder. That's what i use. Again no measurement difference whatsoever.
JVC gear from this era is very underrated. They did go downmarket during the 90s, focusing on cheap 'midi systems' and car audio which I think badly hurt their legacy. I have the L-A21 (the belt drive version of this table), got it as part of a stack of old JVC separates from a local free group on FB. It's in great shape but sadly missing the dust cover and hinges (and prices for a replacement on eBay are crazy - £100+ for a piece of plastic, i don't think so). Otherwise seems a good solid unit. I replaced the cartridge with an AT-3600L and it sounds pretty good through the old JVC amp and Wharfedale Linton speakers. It's a bit older than you said - 1980-82 I believe. Almost as old as me!
JVC had a few very good pieces. The tdv1010 cassette deck may well be the finest cassette deck ever manufactured by any company and it sold for 1400 when new. They made a few good VCRs later on. The early ones were junk. We used to call them junk very cheap. They had some nice professional cameras that when they worked they were great. Unfortunately they broke down quickly and once it broke a few times in short order confidence was lost quickly.

The sine wave produced by the instantaneous and continuous RPM readout is highly likely due to the weight of the phone. In other words, the centrifigual force not being consistent across the whole circle is due to the phone's weight. Without the phone on the surface, it is likely that the RPM measurements with respect to one another at any given moment in time will deviate much less. It's the phone.
Well it looks like i'm setting the weight correctly on my old JVC JL-F50, It worked ok for my use years ago. i wonder if that retro bright product would remove the yellowing without making a mess of the transparency.

Hello sir and great video! This oughta be an easy one. The best I can adjust my pitch control is a little bit fast. At the center spot, the lock doesnt work well and I get lots of wow and flutter. And below that it's running way slow.. I guess I need that spray you are using, so that is deoxit?

I just bought this on ebay and I'm hoping and praying that I won't be disappointed although it states in the description that it needs a belt so after doing a search using the model number I had no luck. I use a small plastic yoghurt pot placed over the centre of the platter and place the phone on top of that. I also check to see if the deck is level too. Both of these things make a difference when I check the speed on mine.
It really shouldn't make a big difference as the rotational speed is the same regardless. On my technics slm1 it measures 0.03 regardless if i am dead center or around edge. More has to do with the balance and weight of the platter. Also my m1 had no motor. The platter is the motor. It has the magnet attatched to the underside of the platter which sits over the stator coils. I will service that one soon as it is a rare unit.

I just tested one of my turntables with the same app as you. 0.38 if I put the phone off centre, but it drops to 0.04 if I put it over the centre on top of a plastic pot. The deck is a TEAC P70. Will experiment with my other deck too. Might even inspire me to do a video!
Hello, how r u. I have a few problems which maybe u could help me with. I have just received an L-A31 in very clean condition, even the dust lid is scratchless. But i have a query, the headshell & cartridge are turned slightly clockwise so the cue level arm is slightly down and the left hand side of headshell is up!!! Which surely is not correct? Or is it, because the videos i have seen of this turntable seem to be the same, including yours!? I have tried undoing the two screws under the collar which the headshell plugs in to and it does turn, but when u put the screws back in it seems to go the same way again!!! Which Leads me to believe there is a v out under the tone arm in that section so it finds that position constantly??? Its driving me NUTS!!! SHOULD the headshell be level on this model? Or turned clockwork slightly(surely not) so why do others seem to be this way? Oh, and what i think is the centreline down by the counterweight seems to be off, if it is a centreline? But its off the opposite way to the headshell/cartridge, as if the arm has turned anti clockwise slightly. Hopefully u still have this model to check it against my words. Or u may even know through experience. I would be SERIOUSLY grateful if u could help. Many thanks, David...

I have this exact turntable, I bought it used of eBay. I works and is clean. Missing a dust cover and needs a new cartridge. The only problem it has is the tone arm doesn’t return completely on that black plastic. It gets really close to it but not on it completely. Can anyone help please 🙏. Also when I push stop the tone arm lowers a bit more than playing height. Is that normal????
Any idea how to oil the dampening cue? I'm having a problem with the tonearm dropping hard onto the record and when the tonearm returns it makes a squeaking noise
@@SDsailor7 yes, but for best long-term results, it's best to use DeOxit F series-it's designed for potentiometers, among other things. The more common DeOxit D series is for switches and contacts.

I use a cardboard centre from a used up sticky tape roll, works great holding the phone in the middle

Just got a free Technics turntable SL-D2 missing the cover. Local plexiglass shop making me a new custom cover. Might go with translucent red or blue.

Grab two rubber nonslip spacers just higher than spindle and put phone in middle centre of gravity. Place camera on the spacers either side of spindle

The m1 was a DJ table. 0 to full speed 1/3 rotation or less. Would stop as fast too.

It a special silicone damping oil. Very high viscosity.
Is the pitch control missing the knob?
That knob looks pretty small.
The knob is on it.
Yank that motor up and change out the oil in the bearing. 40 year old oil is probably gummy - that will also affect wow.
What type of cart is on that turntable?
