I think my first turnatable was this model, basic JVC, adjusted to 1.5 grams fixed, used a double speed motor that looked almost the same as the used un tape recorder from the period. Used the AT3482P in 4P mount. The sound was pretty good. The 1.5gram fixed tracking force .. not so much .... if record was just a bit warped, it jumped as hell. Pretty affordable with a nice cartridge.
On first look the belts are $20 but if you look it up by measurements it’s $5.50. Picked one up at a goodwill and turns out to be a decent little player for $10
Those JVCs from that era have bearing issues as well. The grease hardens and scoring of the spindle and bearing well occur. Bearing should be serviced with fresh oil.
This one has what sounds like a bound up arm and thus can't seem to play correctly. I had a Kenwood belt drive that was similar to this, but a half inch and it played well up until I upgraded to a Rega P6 back in the spring and the arm never bound up either.

I heard that squeak myself and if it has bearings that dried out that would explain the way the cartridge was!

Wow will always be worse when you drop a cel phone on only half the surface of the platter. It will make any imbalance worse.
