  • A customer donated this table, basically left-for-dead. Let's see what's going on with it.

    Just did a service on this one today. 2 hours full service including a detail and lid buff and polish (not a lid resto). Decent table. Better than a lot out there.

    Love watching your videos. I am across the Pond in N. Ireland and looking to try and rescue some old vintage turntables (Pioneers, Sansui etc), so your easy to follow instructions are proving invaluable.

    Back in the day (1978-80) this was a entry level turntable for around 140 bucks and it already came with
    a good silent drive,usable pitch controls & strobe + semi automatic with separate stop control as comfort
    functions. The tonearm is not world class by todays standart but certainly good enough to make good use
    of cartridges above base level quality,like for example AT-VM95ML or SH or Ortofon X3-Turbo.
    And for what its worth,its truly "made in japan". Serviced and cleaned todays offerings pale at double the cost
    regardless of brand.

    • @nanchanger
      @nanchanger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's the difference between AT-VM95ML and AT-VM95M?

    • @Zockopa
      @Zockopa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nanchanger There is no AT-VM95M. The AT-VM95ML has a nude microlinear stylus. It is a equivalent to the Ortofon 2MBlue
      for medium mass tonearms,like most old japanese turntables have. The 2MBlue works best in arms with lower effective mass
      like for example old Dual turntables like CS-510 or CS-621. Personaly i use a VM95ML with a Sony PS-X6 among other cartridges.
      Its a perfect fit.

    • @nanchanger
      @nanchanger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Zockopa sorry, got mixed up, my REAL question is are all the AT-VM95 series carts identical? If I have an AT-VM95E cartridge and switch out the stylus with the VM95ML, would that be the same as if I bought an AT-VM95ML? Thanks for responding!

    • @Zockopa
      @Zockopa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nanchanger Yes. The cartridge bodies are identical. So a ML needle will fit. Expect a clearly audible betterment.

    I just aquired a PS-20. Something tells me that the motor assembly comes apart like this one. 😁

    Always psyched for a new episode! Noticed you mentioning a few times in different episodes that non-quartz direct drives run fine if their pots get cleaned, with people rarely having to adjust them more than once (assuming they're not switching from 33 1/3). But on my SL-D2, every time I'd clean my records with a brush (careful as I could be not to apply excessive pressure) I'd see the strobe start to drift a little. Is that a sign that DeOxit is needed or just natural based on the motor? Also, where are you finding all these deals?! Seriously.

    • @ocularcavity8412
      @ocularcavity8412 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an SL-D2 that i got at goodwill a few weeks ago and it's speed was off and i needed to adjust the internal pots but appears to be running true afterwards. i also use my turntables to aid with record cleaning and have not seen drift in the non quartz models, is your SL-d2 speeding up slowing down or just wandering a bit back and fourth?

    • @mf1932
      @mf1932 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ocularcavity8412 Well, in the service manual, I think there's mention of there being some slight strobe dot drift at certain frequencies, which is supposed to be purely visual (not affecting play). But mine would start to slow down a hair after cleaning my records. It could be fixed by fiddling with the pitch, but it was annoying. That's a big part of the reason why I got an SL-Q2.

    • @ocularcavity8412
      @ocularcavity8412 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mf1932 Ih ave and SL-Q2 as well and do favor it just for the sound, but as for your drift it could be the main bearing being a bit stiff or needing some oil or more usage especially if it eventually goes back to normal after a while. I have had turntables like my Pioneer pl-518 (direct drive no quartz lock) that are in good condition but sat at my local record shop for YEARS before i bought it and it would would drift out from time to time and wonder a bit back and forth while playing but after using it long enough that all when away it is now solid as a rock and no longer drifts at all but i do use it regularly

    • @mf1932
      @mf1932 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ocularcavity8412 Yeah, I bought it refurbished, but they may have done an inadequate job oiling the bearing and deoxidizing the pots, so it may worthwhile for me to crack it open and see what the issue was in either case. It's currently my backup deck if my SL-Q2 craps out on me (though given my preference for quartz-lock, I'd probably want to upgrade to something else at that point).

    • @ocularcavity8412
      @ocularcavity8412 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mf1932 the SL-D2 is a good back up but i that SL-Q2 is a tank so it will last a WHILE, mine was never referbed and it is FLAWLESS, also deox the speed switch my Pioneer PL-7 needs a good switch cleaning, but it has audible wow and flutter when it is struggling and juggling the speeds clears it up

    I'm so glad I found your channel! I have my childhood PS-T1 turntable from my dad now. I did the DeOxIT on the speed and trimmer pots as well as the speed switch (thank you for your video!) but my platter is spinning with runaway speed where none of the speed switches or pots are making any difference. I didn't lift the circuit board but the underside looks to be decent - no loose solder joints or shorts. Do you have any ideas what I could troubleshoot next? Thank you for your wonderful channel!

    • @TurntableGuy
      @TurntableGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you lift the platter there should be a speed sensor "head" there (looks like a tape deck head). Check to make sure it is adjusted properly (you can download the service manual at vinylengine.com).

    Hi. I dismantled the motor, and I see that there is a lubricant there, dark yellow in color, quite liquid. spindle is not dry. Does it make sense to remove the old grease and apply a new one, or leave everything as it is?

      use contact cleaner spray like deoxit 5 on the interior potenciometers. they are probably oxidated by lack of use (no heat generated means "hello humidity -> oxidation)
