    Thank you so much for this great video ! I was able to fix my exact turntable as this one from your video. The record return & cue weren’t working. I know isn’t worth anything but I bought it back when I was a poor college kid. It doesn’t match the nice equipment I have now at 55 but there’s lots fond memories attached to those times. Love your videos.

    Turntables never went away in the audiophile world. It was just the mass market that stopped selling them. Even the DJ's kept buying the pro models like the Technics 1200's.

    My records got boxed up in 1983.
    I will pull them out of the archives now that i have time to sit and listen again.
    Hope the nostalgia is worth it.
    Also, I can finally test that Canadian Rocker argument about Analog vs Digital.
    My Neil young vinal vs mp3 vs CD through my 1990s Pioneer system.

      I like vinyl, but digital will always be better. Vinyl is all about adding pleasing "distortion" sound to the music (like tube amps), but in strict Hi-Fi terms, this is of course wrong. Hi-Fi is all about not removing musical information, and not adding anything ether.

    I've always wondered why vinyl masters were cut with the cutting head traveling in a straight line and the playback hardware designed to go across the record in an arc.!

      Edison record players drove the pickup across the record with a gear driven mech just like the cutter.

      @@calypso22 liner tracking is too complex in adds a whole whack of other artifacts to the sound as the sled moves a few mm in steps. The true audio snoob will tell you that. The tp4 system got the alignment about as close as you will ever get. Many companies worked on this collaboratively for years to get it perfect. The biggest names in turntables and cartridges perfected it only to have vinyl disappear almost over night for 30+ years untill the hipster started a resurgence in vinyl. Why I will never know.

  • @markmarkofkane8167

    Love those turntables! I've always wanted a linear and or a direct drive. But linears are rare . Except maybe used. Like to see a linear turntable repair someday.
    I hope I have linear correct. The straight line tracking, like master discs are cut.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Linear are not that great. They shift back and forth as the mechanism tracks across the record. The principal sounds good but how it works is the arm moves a bit then the block moves and stops. This causes the angle to rock back and forth as it tracks.

    T4P cartridges are pretty awesome, especially the one's as originally fitted in the Technics SL-7, SL-10 and others. The Technics EPC-310MC is highly regarded. I have an SL-7 and a pair of 1210's i use regularly. Looking for a microline T4p to place in the SL-7, not so keen on shabata. Am however rather pleased with the Goldring 1012 Geiger II that I've installed on my 1210 mk2 for hifi use through the Little Bear T11. Considering the Goldring 1040 but more inclined to go with the AT-VM95ML when funds permit. Using Ortofon OM Pro S on the 1210's for Dj use, absolutely no back-tracking the Goldrings! I would really love it if Audio-Technica would be kind enough to manufacture a P-Mount T4P version of the magnificent AT-VM95ML :) hint hint! Lol!

    I have notice the fact that the speed is not constant in the measurement in the application is because the motor runs above the point where the engine is located. At the point where the motor and the belt meet - there is the point of power that changes the constant speed in tge rotation, therefore it affects the final result. Note that in the direct drive motors - the speed is stable because the motor is under the tray and the rotation is perfect - and there the speed is stable.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's due to elasticity of belt drive and all belt drive turntables experience this. This is why high end belt drive use such heavy platters, so smooth out the power pulses from the motor. Direct drive uses a 3 phase motor.

    To be honest, I'm not sure if I'd trust in that phone app in accurately measuring RPM, since the drift of the display suggests a drift of whatever sensing device it uses inside. If it is some sorta compass then probably yes I could.

      @@gtaudio3796 early CD releases of pop and rock sounded no better because tapes mixed for lo-fi vinyl were used to make the CD master. Record companies didn't care for the most part. Companies like GRP and Telarc however did care and their digitally recorded sessions sounded fantastic. You had to be a jazz or classical listener however because that was where the super high quality releases were. Fortunately for me I am a jazz junky so I was able to get my HiFi fix and everytime it put a sme on my face. No clicks no pops no distortion no hiss just music that came out of nowhere. It was like chick corea had his piano set up in my living room and I had a bunch of friends over for a drink.

      Spot on! I heard early cd's were eq'd for vinyl whether that true or not but they were often harsh plus early players perhaps less than ideal but a good true analogue recording on a good pressing is profoundly good if the system is capable and very well setup but good digital is awesome again if done right. I do use digital files mostly so I'm not anal about the source, currently using a Xiang Sheng DA-03A DAC upgraded with Burson discreet opamps and it really is very good indeed. I am blessed and thank you for mentioning Chick Corea, I too now am a fan :D Very best regards, happy listening ;)@@12voltvids
