"It's a military version of 'play your cards right.'" So... You gotta know when to shoot 'em. Know when to loot 'em. Know when to move your ranks and When to retreat. You never count the bodies When your fighting on the frontlines. There'll be time enough for counting When they have been beat.
Great choice of music, you had me for a bit wracking my brains to work out what it was - mainly because I thought the Speccy was long dead by the time old Ringo turned up to narrate Thomas back in the day...
Your are looking down the sights of the 1919 as your tank rolls across the desert you look away for just a second to wipe the oil, carbon, and sweat from your brow then looking back your heart stops for a second as you see the slight flash and dust being thrown into the air you know the shell from that gun will reach you in 1 second maybe 2. You have but a moment to think Will it bounce? Will it hit me if it doesn't? Is this how I die? The shell slams into the tank with tremendous force, spall from the already weakened armour breaks off and a piece hit you just above the eye. Blood running down your face you howl its location the 75 mm takes aim and fires you can feel the vibrations in your whole body. You look down your sights and open fire on the men scrambling for cover and pray that you live to see the sun set in this miserable god forsaken desert. The horrors of war ages 7 and up.
Just a point guys: Those "British" tanks are actually Soviet T-34-85's, and the "German" ones are also (by the looks of it) T-34-85's. Very crudely done admittedly, and the front cover shows the latter as what looks like a bastard hybrid of a Patton and something else, but the models are T-34-85's.
Great fun, had years ago. I remember watching the advert for this in the 1970's, seeing it in the shops in my home town but i never owned one! 😔 I am still fascinated by the game, hence i am watching this video, almost 50 years later. As someone might/should say to me, GET OVER IT! 😜
I remember being about 8 and having minutes of fun playing this with a friend I didn't really like. Great to see this video as I forgot how the game worked.
God damn you, Ashens. My headset was acting up so I went to play a video and you put on the glitchy as shit Tomas the Tank Engine music. Made me think my headset fucking died.
If I remember correctly the strategy for this game is you pick 10 first, then 9.....8.....7 and so on and you can't be beaten. The only problem being the opponent quickly works out they must do the same.......... Arguably the most ill-thought out game ever.
I had this game around 1977-81 ish (give or take three hundred years!)I had those plastic tanks for years!what a fantastic memory that that is!I ended up putting them in goal and using them as goalkeepers, using soldiers as football players, using little plastic balls for the football!it's hard to believe that life used to be so magical and joyous!eh?actually playing it as intended?I don't recall ever playing it once.i just fooled about moving the tanks.i must have used that plastic slide then.i don't even remember that plastic sleeve!
If there had been a version of this when I was a child, I would have been all over this game. I also probably would have spent a not inconsiderable amount of time playing with it by myself and just blowing up the tanks over and over.
Glad I found your channel. It was great watching this. Nice to have old board games showcased😁. The game mechanism of outguessing the opponent and getting that many action points reminds me so much of Raptor the board game.
Good God! I had this game! I've never even thought of it till I saw the thumbnail. As I recall, I ended up blowing up the tanks with firecrackers. Thanks for the flashback, guys. :)
I remember the TV commercial that's on the side of the box. I have two of these. One US original and one from the UK for parts. The pegs are all dark grey and the tank sets are different colors. I'll have to put a vid up one of these days.
I remember that game. I think a friend had it. Kids got it for the little tanks and ignored the actual game. It was also an all time low in tasteless post war advertising. Those pictures on the side of the box of Patton and Rommel playing the game. In the US that was the TV commercial.
Still have the similar MB game, called Tank Battle, to this lurking in my loft. Had it for Christmas in 1976. It had the same little tanks in as Tank command 😀 great memories
This was brilliant! they must've reissued it cus I had it new in the 80s! !!! me and my mates lived it. I think the tag line in the 80s issue was "You may have to loose the battle to win the war" which isn't true
This looks like a game a grandparent would buy their young child and the child would play it once and then take the tanks and play with them with their army men
One of the redeeming things about going to thrift stores is looking at old board games like this, but it comes with the risk of missing pieces if you chose to buy one. Can't remember how many connect 4 ripoffs I saw, or party games that used VHS tapes.
I had this. Another thing I regretted getting rid of. “Two things kids liked. Tanks and lots of explosions.” Well you got the Tanks part of it at least.
Remember we found a similar game in the back of the cupboard at my mates house when we were bored in the 90s, so excited but then uh the disappointment.
I see a bunch of people complaining about Larry in the comments, but I want to see Ashens play more boardgames and I don't think Larry's a bad decision on who to play with.
As people will ask, yes we filmed this in 2013.
Had a few issues with the editing, which is why it took so long.
Go to sleep larry its almost 3.
Is the editor in Iraq or what?
DON'T MENTION ZEE WAR !
*****
Thanks dude, we recorded a couple more recently, and we hope to make it a monthly thing :D
***** I've got an old "Street Fighter: The Roleplaying Game" set if you guys would like to review it. I wouldn't mind sending it to yah.
I'm shocked they didn't point out that given the position of the tanks, they were being blown up by their own mines.
"It's a military version of 'play your cards right.'"
So...

1970s children liked tanks and explosions 2016 children like tanks and explosions we really haven't changed in 46 years have
1940'ies children didn't like tanks and explosions :C
Jonjo Pymm except we like to see every detail in slomo
Jonjo Pymm no 2016 kids like inventing genders
@@simtexa American children probably did.
@@DOSRetroGamer Say that to Private Tom Johnson, 17, who thought going to war would be loads of fun.
I'm really liking these videos between you and larry. Very relaxing and fun to watch. You should do more board games like this
AAAnnnddd the song at the beginning id the Thomas the Tank Engine theme taken from the ZX Spectrum game.
Chose it as it sounds so nasty :D
I thought it was someone's chiptune take on it. No idea there was an actual game to go with it.
Well, it certainly helped my mild headache become full-blown...
omg - I had no idea Thomas was *THAT* old! ZX Spectrum? Wow. I seriously thought Thomas came out about the same time as the SNES, or maybe even N64.
Great choice of music, you had me for a bit wracking my brains to work out what it was - mainly because I thought the Speccy was long dead by the time old Ringo turned up to narrate Thomas back in the day...
***** The first book was printed in 1945. The second book, titled "Thomas the Tank Engine", was printed in 1946.

Write a book about this. Please.
*cough
I always yank on my lanyard knob when I go to the bathroom.
When I pull on it my shelf opens. It's pretty cool.
Poor Larry, almost pulled off his lanyard knob. Sounds very painful.
Tank strategy 101: Don't place land mines on your own side, so your tanks cannot be defeated
World of Tanks: OFFLINE
+tgchan More impressive and not as frustrating, plus no lag
+Shinin you must have poopy internet connection :O
+Miika Ruokonen poopy?
useless channel
Yes as in shitty expect not as rude :P
Poopy.
Miika Ruokonen k
Is no one gonna talk about the fact that the tanks are backing into their own mines...? xd
Brings memories back of the late 1970s. Never used to close our eyes though, just move our hands in all directions to fool an opponent. Happy times.
Just a point guys:
Those "British" tanks are actually Soviet T-34-85's, and the "German" ones are also (by the looks of it) T-34-85's.

that intro music gave me a mental image of thomas the tank engine sat in an alley injecting smack with the fat controller
"Thomas, you're a real crackhead engine!"
"Fuck you, Sir!"
I'm dying XD
im sorry to hear ur dying spamster3212, cancer it seems
I'm grateful for your compassionate words in my last days. I will always remember this until my final breath.
He’d have been better off with a syringe.
Necrocomment FTW 😂
That... that introduction... THOMAS WAS EVERYWHERE!
Had this as a kid. Hours of fun. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Larry is such a legend haha
1:27
Stuart - That was my German accent, could you tell?
Larry - It was!
Can we just take a moment to recognize the awesomeness of Larry replying to a whole bunch of comments?
Thanks :D
***** You good sir........You respond to comments even though it's not your channel.......I like you. More youtubers should be like you
ThatGiambalvoGuy
Thanks, well I try and respond to people as best I can, it feels rude not to.
***** hats off!
***** I jsut love the responses to all the dick comments out there. Masterful, Mr Bundy, masterful.

You must have won! GG!!
love board game episodes ~
ashens is always .
thomas theme caught me off guard though
Thomas the Tank... Engine
God damn you, Ashens. My headset was acting up so I went to play a video and you put on the glitchy as shit Tomas the Tank Engine music. Made me think my headset fucking died.
XD
The 'Rommel' and 'Montgomery' stills are of actors from the tv advert for the game.
I just watched the full video of 2 grown Men playing a childrens Boardgame.
Marvelous!
+KawaiiKnifuu
What an amazing coincidence, so did I!
If I remember correctly the strategy for this game is you pick 10 first, then 9.....8.....7 and so on and you can't be beaten. The only problem being the opponent quickly works out they must do the same.......... Arguably the most ill-thought out game ever.
Yep, that makes sense.
Was... was the opening music the Thomas the Tank Engine theme?
Yes.
Thomas was everywhere.
We're lucky that HIT Entertainment didn't put out a ..ahem..hit on the video.
sporkafife Whooooaaa
+Magitek1112
Wouldn't that theme technically belong to Mike O'Donnel and Junior Campbell?
A Roman brought me here, and I'm glad I got here.
I was sent here by a man who slaughtered confused floating barbarians with nipple clamps.
I see Jesus is a fan of Nerdcubed.
Jesus Christ What video?
+_ _ (Tycer) jh
What video did he send you from
It kinda reminds me of that film where they used M46 Pattons to represent Panzer VI Tigers and M24 Chaffees to represent M4 Shermans.
Yeah..."The Little Mermaid". They didn't fool me either, no sir!
Sean Wilkinson Yeah. Thought so.
2021 here, Tanks beamed into peoples heads was found to cause headaches, also we're all suffering from a global pandemic.
8-bit Thomas the Tank Engine. Already we're off to a fantastic start.
If there had been a version of this when I was a child, I would have been all over this game. I also probably would have spent a not inconsiderable amount of time playing with it by myself and just blowing up the tanks over and over.
Your accent alone was enough for me to subscribe.
Ali Sepehry What about to me? :(
Your looks contributed as well. As well as that smile at the start of the video.
Ali Sepehry
Aww, thank you :D
***** Larry you need not an accent to have subscribers you are to awesome :D
xTuxendox
Bless you Sir :D
Glad I found your channel. It was great watching this. Nice to have old board games showcased😁. The game mechanism of outguessing the opponent and getting that many action points reminds me so much of Raptor the board game.
Damn it Ashens, you had it IN THE BAG and you BLEW IT!
Thanks for posting brought back some great memories
I love the pixelated Thomas the tank engine
I had this game back in the early 80's, form a garage sale.
I agree with the guy that said review a VCR game, the ones like Atmosphere and the star trek on where the Klingon talks to you at random ahaha.
BurntFaceMan We got a few of them in the collection now. Just a case of meeting up to film them.
So that's how tank battles really work!
I love these flashback vintage game videos. Thanks!
Love how the intro song is Thomas the Tank Engine!
I see what you did there!
This channel should be 100% board games and 20% also board games.
I hope there are more videos with Larry. I like him.
Thanks dude, We recorded two more episodes the other week, and hopefully make this into a monthly thing!
this was enjoyable to watch on my holo-graphic space television
Watching from 2024 and still trying to relive my 70s youth! I just played with the tanks along with my airfix soldiers (which I still have!)
Which scale tho? Got loads myself in the parents loft tho bought few 1/32 boxes 20 yrs ago off ebay
Took me a while to recognize the Thomas the Tank Engine music, but I did, and I love you all the more for adding it in.
was that the Thomas the tank engine theme I heard at the start?
Yessir.
SIR, YES SIR!!!
Yes Sir Yes...
yes sir
risseY
Whoo! Guru Larry and Ashens together!
I had a similar game back it the early 80's with a battleship theme. you had sub-marines to fire torpedoes at the ships
I should be in bed, but instead I'm watching ashens play a stupid board game. Where did my life go so wrong?
1:04 the box falls it so lololololooollll hahah you all are lol
the intro though...
Thomas the TANK engine...
TANK command board game...
comedy GOLD right there
Wow, a cannon fodder reference.
That's why I love you guys...
17:50 - EPIC! Now I see why that kid on the box cover was so excited.
(plays C64 remix of the Thomas the Tank Engine theme)
I see what you did there
Why are video game board games so charming?
I don't even know why, lol...
I remember that game. I think a friend had it. Kids got it for the little tanks and ignored the actual game. It was also an all time low in tasteless post war advertising. Those pictures on the side of the box of Patton and Rommel playing the game. In the US that was the TV commercial.
I saw this game at my grandmas, unfortunatly the tanks are missing
This is the World of Tanks of the 70's
2021 still not beaming into the brain.
7:47 2013? Did you record this last year?
Lads, the Generals on the side of the box where stills from the original TV ad. We hadn't moved on from the War back then.
Why is everyone having a go at Larry? He's great, a lot better than the people whining in the comments would be in an Ashens video
Still have the similar MB game, called Tank Battle, to this lurking in my loft. Had it for Christmas in 1976. It had the same little tanks in as Tank command 😀 great memories
The joys of Tank Command. We had whole minutes of fun with ours and we've still got it...!!!
This was brilliant! they must've reissued it cus I had it new in the 80s! !!! me and my mates lived it. I think the tag line in the 80s issue was "You may have to loose the battle to win the war" which isn't true
The brucey bonus impression had me creasing
Thanks for making me think there was something wrong with my speakers.
tank command board game....still better than cod infinite warfare
david teddy at least infinite is better than advanced
Tommy Misevicz That's not saying much.
Tank Command:
The official board game for Princess Diana.
Gee, thanks for that intro. It actually damaged my ear apparently and caused great pain.
Oddly enough, as a child I think I would have played this game till it fell apart.
I remove adblocker when watching my fav youtubers
Man this is the best video on the stream to my brain tube.
These guys play good off each other. Funny stuff!
You have ascended my battle tank
He almost pulled his knob off at the end, what a thrilling game!
I see Larry for the first time with his lovely face!
for a second i thought it said "Ted the communist tank" for some reason...
damnit brain
would love to see a halloween special o this series of you guys playing the VHS classic Atmosfear, loved that game as a kid!
We don't own that sadly, but maybe for next year!
***** oh man, I'd love to see that. I have two copies for some reason.. one's yours Larry if you want it.
DrLeatherface
If you can spare it, we'd love it dude, thank you ever so much!!!
***** Yeah, no worries. Can dig out my spare copy and try and get it to you before Halloween. I'll shoot you a message as soon as I've found it!
***** Yeah I did, it's in storage at my mothers house. I've not been able to pick it up yet though.
What do you call a soup made of Ashens? Beef Stuart.
More like Brunswick Stuart.
It's beef Stu
Unless its vegan soup, then its Beet Stuart.
And yes he is totally incest (whatever that means)
I don't know why but Larry sounds like he's going to have a cardiac arrest at any moment.
Tanks and lots of explosions.”
Well you got the Tanks part of it at least.
Well guru Larry had the incredible fortune of lots of shell rickisheys
Actually, neither of these tank designs are ww2 German tanks. I have an older version of the game that uses Sherman tanks and Panther tanks.
This game makes me glad to be alive!
I had this game WAAAAY back in the 70s!!!!!
Remember we found a similar game in the back of the cupboard at my mates house when we were bored in the 90s, so excited but then uh the disappointment.
Was about to head off to bed and this appears, guess I'm gonna be late to college then..
The guy on the left he was so excited that he was pulling the rope so hard like he was trying to start up a chainsaw....
An entertaining, british roman "centurion" who lived a third of his life in 17 minutes and who wanted flapjacks sent me here.
Did I just hear a plane in the background when the tanks started moving or was that the sound of tank tracks?
I see a bunch of people complaining about Larry in the comments, but I want to see Ashens play more boardgames and I don't think Larry's a bad decision on who to play with.
