This is awesome! Now you’ve been blown away by Phil and Pantera you should check out a band called Jinjer- specifically the song “Pisces, live session” they are a really talented band and the singer Tatiana has a range that is truly gonna take your head off- hopefully you don’t know them already! I think the original video should be removed from pretty much everywhere. It's such a terrible cut and paste (I think the band wasn't even involved on it) and doesn't do justice to the song. Unfortunately it's often what reactors choose to react to and they don't get the right picture of the song.

Cowboys From Hell (the album this song is on) is my favourite. Vocally, it’s a bridge between Phil’s 80s Halford-infused glam style and the 90s testosterone-fuelled style that he became known for. Musically, a sign of things to come. The perfect balance imo.

    • @robertkennedy5414
      @robertkennedy5414 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Cowboys was an initial transition for them, from their "glam metal" (I hate that term) beginnings. Vulgar Display of Power was the beginning of what the band would become, and Far Beyond Driven set them on their path for the remainder of their career.

Yeah, and it's amazing he could do that, when he is a natural low bass, with a A1 being in his chest range and E1 accessible with chest-fry. I cannot believe more people haven't discussed his crazy highs for such deep voice naturally.

This Pantera song is one of my favorite songs of all time and probably the pinnacle of Philip Anselmo's technical skill. These lyrics have helped me through a lot of grief in my life. This is a song about death, but it's so melodic and there's so much energy in it, I can't stay sad singing along to it.
I have no formal training, but I'm hearing Phil go from very low, like Johnny Cash baritone, into very high, soprano registers in the end. I don't even know if I'm using the right terminology, for what he's doing, but I've tried to mimic him and it takes incredible skill and a lot of breath. I also love how the lead guitar mirrors his vocals at the end of the song. Thank you for featuring it. R.I.P. DIMEBAG. We miss your riffs!

Great reaction. It's iconic in every way. That riff, the guitar solo. How the mellow parts capture the grief and sorrow you feel.. The heavy parts capture the anger and rage you feel. Then the matching triple at the end with Dimebag finishing it. It's also personal to me. The Vulgar Dispay album was my introduction to Pantera in the early 90s. I bought the Cowboys album soon after. My dad died of cancer in February 1993. This song became a huge coping mechanism for me.

Finally! Great reaction and very grateful it blew your mind - now we don't all look like liars! Cemetery Gates is definitely one of their ballads, but it's an amazing song and probably the best one to hear the range on Phil's vocal. I'll say it again - 5 minutes alone may be one of the most uninteresting Pantera songs. Its not that its a bad song, its not good either and only became so popular because of the billboard charts. Most of their songs are heavy, groovy, and aggressive, and way more interesting in every way than 5 minutes alone is. Looking forward to your future metal reactions!

If you're curious about the previous 80's version of Pantera with a completely different lead singer and more of a glam metal sound (when they were still a bar band in Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX), I recommend Come On Eyes (studio version). The song writing is as good as anything Ratt produced back in the day, (though they had a much smaller production budget than Ratt, which is evident) and it's a wonder that it isn't more well known. Plus, the vocals are at the opposite end of the vocal spectrum than Phil Anselmo's.
By the way, I played in a band that opened for them several times back in those days, and it was obvious that it was only a matter of time before they were eventually discovered. They treated their bar shows like full blown concerts with pyrotechnics, Marshall amplifier stacks and a spotlight solo for the young guitar wizard known at that time as Darrell Abbott. The first time I saw them, I was blown away.

I’m TEXAN and saw THE TEXAS STATE ASSAULT TEAM live 6 times! First time was in a smallish club in my hometown, San Antonio, which is a Hugh Rock Town! Many of the very best bands have said we are a great, welcoming city. Famous for it. That PANTERA club show was hands down the best small show I’ve ever seen. Peel your face back, hair on fire, audiovisual overload! They had Airport landing lights pointed straight at the crowd, on each side of the drums, perfectly timed with Vinnie’s rapid fire drumming. Me and my 300 pound friend held onto the the front barricade the whole show. It wasn’t easy! Ha Ha! 😁👍

I’m no expert on these things, I’m a rock/metal fan though! I think a lot of people from outside of metal often get a surprise by the sheer variety and depth within the style. Also, the evolution and development of bands through their careers as the playing skills and tricks increase. Over recent years watching reactions like yours, from people who really understand music, and I also include classically trained musicians, the level of sheer musical talent, craftsmanship and understanding has really almost validated my reasoning for this music genre being my music of choice!
I should add, in first year at high school we were put through a basic music test to see if we could identify key changes, time changes and time signatures. Apparently I aced it. I was put forward to learn double bass for the school orchestra. I have never got to grips with formal music training or theory. I can’t read music, I play by ear, I couldn’t tell you what note or chord is being played, but I have been told I can pick out excellent examples of a style and understand real talent and ability. I’m also autistic and have synesthesia.

Btw, now, that you got thru Pantera, I would like to recommend you the all-time favorite from Pantera for a private, relaxed (somehow) listening: The whole "Vulgar Display Of Power". It is so groovy and marked the best of Pantera after the, as you said "more commercial" phase. It has so much impact even on my playing on the bass for decades, and still inspires me now that I am learning the 7-string guitar. Sick grooves and in-your-face, but with aggression and style.
They were so influential because everyone in this band was so talented, and they knew that they were "onto something" and how to present it without becoming pathetic or meaningless. All these later "new metal" or "groove metal" bands have a lot of the focus on good rhythms, and Pantera was one of these bands that established this kind of groove in metal approach first.

You have a new fan and friend from The Great Pacific Northwest! love you style and your humor...hehe. I was such a huge Pantera fan that in late '91 my son was born and shortly after, Pantera came to Seattle opening for Skid Row and money was tight so I had to listen to my local radio station all weekend to win tickets because they did a pick-a-ticket weekend where if you were caller #10 after the cue to call you could choose John Cougar Mellancamp, Skid Row, and some other band. Late Sunday I dialed and the DJ picked up and said you're caller #9 thanks for trying, and I yelled "Hey!" and he said yeah can I help you and I said "hey man I know you got extra Pantera tickets because everyone is choosing JCM, I've been listening all weekend" and make a long story short he gave me a pair. Got to the show with my new wife, her firts ever live rock show was Pantera and skid row, Pantera scared the F out of her it was so loud, she actually had her head between her knees at one point. Not me I was in the winner section first row 2nd floor balcony and rocked my ass off. I'm a musician and was playing air guitar, drums and singing Phils shit with him and obviously Vinnie noticed me because at the end of their set he stood from the drums and pointed his sticks up towards me and was pointing at me as he walked to the front of the stage and finally I looked around and he had to be pointing at me and I said "Me?" and he said "Yes!" then pulled back to throw a drumhead like a frisbee and said "are you ready?" and I waved my hands upward and said hell yeah! (not where they got the band name from later on that I know of....lol) and Vinnie tossed it, coming right at me the 2 feet from my hands takes a dive to the crowd below me! Vinnie shrugs his shoulders and says "I tried!" and I shook my head yes while giving him a double thumbs up, and he gives me a double thumbs up back to me, then salutes me and turns and walks off stage. The '92 Seattle Show with skid row Vinnie spent a couple minutes with me because they loved thier fans and I'm sure he could tell I was a huge fan and knew their stuff, I'll never forget it. Music isn't the same without The Abbott Brothers, RIP Dime and Vinnie! ... .. . . . . . sorry for mistakes in my wriiting, no time to correct...lol ky

Well-spotted, the Bruce influence. I'm the same age as the Pantera guys, actually born 3 weeks before Dime, R.I.P. I'm also an American guitarist, and Maiden and Priest were 2 of my main faves back in my high school days. Diggin' the channel! (No pun intended). lol

Melissa! Holy shite where have you been hiding?!? I love reactions with fire and sass, and based off of this reaction, you have it in spades! I LOVE this song.
For me, Metal was a medium for me to dive into and soothe my mental woes and issues. It became a music of catharsis and healing.

Im learning as I go a long about mosh pits and the culture but it is super interesting. Thank you for watching my dude! 🥰

1st Cementery Gates belongs to their 1st album 1990. The dif is just a balad turn so his vocals are cleaner but he sings so technical and cool. Super wide rvocal range and resourses.

I don't know if you did any Judas Priest(Rob Halford) but Phil before joining Pantera was singing in a Judas Priest cover band, he could always hit those high notes, but changed up to a deeper tone for Pantera.

Phil is self taught, listening to Rob Halford, but after Cowboys From Hell, Phil said, he wanted to find his own vocal style, so he started screaming until his cords didn't hurt anymore, so he calloused his cords, but if you check out his project called EN MINOR he sings clean, but he's a baritone vocalist

I would like to suggest a band from Mongolia called the Hu. They use throat singing which I find cool. "Yuve Yuve Yu" is my favorite song. They've got some songs that have been redone featuring other singers like "Black Thunder" featuring Serj Tankian and DL of Bad Wolves also "This is Mongol" featuring William DuVall of Alice in Chains. I highly recommend both of those songs too!

I couldn't stay for the full 24 as I had urgent jobs to finish at work in the morning and we are just over the other side of the dateline from US. Just went to work with 2hrs sleep instead.

For another, much older example of a singer and guitarist matching each other note for note check out "Strange Kind of Woman" live from Deep Purple's "Made in Japan" album. It's from 1972. The singer is Ian Gillan, and the guitarist is Richie Blackmore.
But I think my main request for another singer for you to check out would be Mikael Stanne (pronounced shtah-nuh) from Dark Tranquility. Specifically, the performance of "Atoma" from Summer Breeze German 2017. This would be a great introduction to the genre of Melodic Death Metal and showcases both his clean and harsh vocals, and that specific performance shows what a friendly guy he is as well.
