I'm a Bassist myself since 84, Cliff was one of my Biggest and Earliest influences. He was a Master of the Bass. Glad I got to see him in concert before he died.
Cliff's voice ringing through one list time. Plus their were writing the song while touring when he died. So one last Cliff song, it's like a little goodbye from him.
Metallica's Kashmir. Big, open, ethereal, layered, transcendental. Their instrumentals are just amazing.

One of the best albums of all time, meant to be listened to in its entirety. It's almost criminal to listen to Orion without listening to damage inc right after.
Then I am a criminal. I open my MOP album sequence with Damage Inc, followed by : Disposable Heroes, Master Of Puppets, Battery, Leper Messiah, Orion, The Thing That Should Not Be, and finishing with Sanitarium. Unless an album is a formal concept album (and not just thematically conceptual, but chapters-of-a-story conceptual), I rarely ever listen to songs in their original album sequence. I guess the concept album thing really made an impression on me, and ever since, I have been organizing songs according to subject, musical tempo, etc. Purists hate me, but I don't care, lol. For what it's worth, I almost considered closing the MOP album with Orion. That would have allowed my custom sequence to accommodate your preference for Damage Inc following Orion... as long as the playlist is on "Repeat All", lol. I may go back and do that, just to try it out.
The late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was the band's 'classical music guy'... and taught the band a lot from his music schooling. He taught James Hetfield everything about melodies and drummer Lars Ulrich about song arrangements... After his death in 1986, Metallica did not revisit the instrumental format much after 1988 (They honored Cliff Burton w/ a epic instrumental 'To live is to die' w/ a spoken word piece... but nothing else, apart from the track 'S+++ide and redemption' in 2008) Cliff Burton played a huge part in arranging 'Orion' and his bass was more prominent on the track... The strange part is that the track had a slow section that was kind of sad... like they were drifting away in outer space and it was almost as if Burton was saying goodbye because he had an inkling that he would not be around much longer... He was killed in 1986 at age 24 in a tour bus accident just after the release of Metallica's 3rd album 'Master of Puppets'. Cliff Burton's sister Connie recalled them growing up together and Cliff would do the oddest thing - every morning, he would wake up and put on Bill Graham Ministries and would often repeat the Biblical line of "the Kingdom of salvation"... When she asked him what that was about, he told her he found the sermons intriguing (even though he was apparently not a church-goer or religious) ... Connie got into drugs and her brother's death made her addictions even worse... Thankfully, Connie was able to recover and live to this day.
Master of Puppets is an absolutely flawless album. There’s not a single note that I’d change. There’ll never be anything like it again and it’s staggering that it was made by a bunch of guys that were between 21 and 23 years old. The maturity of the songwriting is far beyond the years of the band members. Pretty sure I’m going to stipulate that Orion is played a my funeral. It encapsulates everything that I love about heavy metal.
You have to consider that these guys were in their early 20's when they produced this masterpiece. The musicianship on display is astonishing, much of it from Cliff Burton, but as a unit they were unstoppable at this stage. The whole album is amazing, you need to do more from it!

Metallica's older instrumentals like: The Call Of Ktulu, Orion, and To Live Is To Die (which has a stanza towards the end) are so easy to get lost in, especially The Call Of Ktulu and Orion. Cliff Burton is a Legend
Im a huge Metallica fan and I have been since I was 7 years old when I found a couple CD's at our Russian neighbor's garage sale. They were The Black Album and "...And Justice For All" and I fell in love right away. I just saw them live last month for my birthday and it was far better than I ever could have imagined. You gotta see em live.
This song always makes me cry. It doesn't even have words it's just so effective at expressing those feeling and pulling them out of me. It's too good.
This is probably my most favorite musical piece of theirs. It seems to tell a story without words. I love it, but sometimes it takes so long for reactors to discover it but when they do, I’m right there.
I can't not get teary eyes whenever hearing this song. From joy, the place it's taking me to, the memories it brings up about friends and fun times, the mourning solos... it's just a beautiful piece of music given to us.
There is an acoustic version of Orion done by a group called Rodrigo y. Gabriella. It's just the two of them with acoustic guitars and the sounds that they are able to make are just amazing. They did this song such Justice that they've been invited to play with members of Metallica
There was a great interview with Ray Burton, and he talks a little about this track. Jan & Ray always showed their support of Cliff, but made a joke that all his music left them nothing to waltz to. Cliff took his appreciation and classical training to devise this magical piece of music history. This where you finally got to hear Cliff really shine. It's a joyous ride through the Cosmos. Next to "To Live Is To Die", this is my favorite instrumental.
We had speech class in my high school back in the early 90's. I was mortified to take this class being a long haired metalhead kid with not many friends. One of our assignments was a demostration speech. I brought my guitar & amp to class & played this song for it. Got an A! No joke! And made some new friends. Lol Brought back some memories, thank you!!

@oscardiggs246 Jason was more than that. He's been a composer as well. If you check his solos in the early days. As for the live performances, yes, the very best. He played with more accuracy and speed than the other two.

This song has such a roller coaster effect too. The peak before the descent into the speed riffs is so damn good...tunnels and loops and spins everywhere
They absolutely nailed the two part guitar harmony that comes in over Cliffs' bass in the middle part! Most people think the guitar parts are multiple guitars that are layered on top of each other in that section, but if you listen to the isolated guitar tracks you can tell it's actually made up of only two guitars, one that's playing a higher version of the same melody and that perfectly harmonise together on the string bends - James and Kirk's on top of the bass line.
I used to listen to this song and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) right before climbing on the back of a bull. Those two songs would get me so pumped but centered so that I could "dance" with the agression of the bull.
One of Metallica's most brilliant pieces, remember back in 86 when i first really got into this album...RIP Cliff, they played this at his funeral, one of many of Cliff's iconic bass compositions.
Just watching you enjoy the melodic interlude, and your beautiful joy expressions made me feel the same joy and love I have for this song and the whole band. ❤
Nice to see Orion covered on a reaction video. Always preferred Orion to Call of Kutulu. Some one did a remix of the Ride the Lightning album with the bass boosted. It's on TH-cam. Brings a whole new level to that album with Cliff Burton's bass so prominent in the mix
Aileen Metallica had a concert in Russia There was 1,200,000 people there to see them.I like your work here when you do the old stuff you seem to light up. I guess you like the oldies
One of my favorite songs by Metallica! I have fond memories of me and my buddy flying down the backroads in Wyoming going 150mph in my Camaro with this song blasting! Fantastic memories!! Great "drive fast" song!!
As I was listening to your praise of James Hetfield's voice and how you were looking forward to experiencing it on this highly-recommended track, I couldn't help but think "Oh, bless your heart...."
Metallica has a few other instrumentals in addition to Orion, all of which are excellent. Call of Ktulu - Ride the Lightning album Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) - Killem All album To Live Is To Die - Justice for All album Suicide & Redemption - Death Magnetic album
I got to visit Washington DC as one of the first classes aloud after 9/11. This song is one of my absolute favorites that I comfonted myself on a bus, Linkin Park was one of my only other cohesive things I can put together mentally. Perfect song.
Orion is a trip... If you just lay back, close your eyes and listen to this, you will be whisked away onto the trip. You never know what is waiting at the end, but it is always a new experience. It is amazing what true skill and mastery of the instruments can create... And no lyrics are needed. The music is talking to your soul already.
They played this song last Friday here in Mexico City, it was awesome, after 6 previous Metallica concerts, finally I had the experience to hear Orion live, so blessed
Hey aileen, excellent choice today. Cliff Burton was one hell of a bass player also well schooled in music he really helped the rest of the members of Metallica when it came to writing music. You can notice the band took a different direction when it came to the and justice for all album after cliff was no longer with us. Check out anesthesia/pulling teeth. Cliff Burton's bass solo, it was on the original kill em All album. Also you'll notice a lot of Dave mustaine's influence on that album because he was once the lead guitarist of Metallica way back in the day. Hope you check it out, it's also another instrumental but it's excellent and it's really rockin. Hope to see it on here.
Aileen, you are a Bassist and I watched you react to Les Claypool do his thing....Cliff Burton was also a next level Bassist, the Song, "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)" is one of his best Solo`s ever! It was Mind Bending seeing Him do it Live....Hell, I was leaning right up against the Stage directly in front of him laying down his Wizardry! He, actually gave me half of the Hieneken that He brought on Stage!
This is such a unique song not only because it's instrumental but also because of the waltz thrown in by Cliff Burton to honor his father. It's really cool. However, my favorite instrumental is "Call of Ktulu" and Ride the Lightning is definitely my favorite early Metallica album, just for the HP Lovecraft references throughout.
Back when MOP came out, I was a senior in H.S. I learned the whole album on guitar and Orion has been my favorite Metallica song ever since. I still love to jam this tune with friends. This, to me, is Metallica's masterpiece. They are modern masters on the level of the classical greats. Orion, above all, displays their virtuosity to the point that there is no question.
My absolute favorite song. Played guitar for 27 years and this is a gem I typically break out during special moments or simply when I feel the urge. The classical influences by Burton shines through. You feel like you float in space, watching all the phenomenon happen in the distance, as the cosmos fill your every cell with its majesty.
it has probably been mentioned, but your description of the structure of the music covering everything and not needing vocals is due to the musical education that the bassist had, this piece is just a properly arranged piece of music, structure, arrangement, composition is extremely well done. If you have not done so, you need to listen to S&M which has a full orchestra backing Metallica. it is honestly epic. Battery is amazing, or if you want instrumental - Call of Ktulu another one written with cliff on Ride the Lightning if IRC, it fills out metallica in the right ways. or possibly check the KMFDM remix of King Nothing. gives metallica and ultra heavy beat and fills out the low end very well
I love looking and seeing the love for music in your eyes. I wonder if you noticed (although it's difficult) that the bass solo at 9 minutes and 10 seconds of your film is played on the bass? This is a masterpiece of the tragically deceased Cliff Burton and the band always dedicates this song to him. He also recommends live versions - they are great, especially the one from Turin
i see metallica playing this in costa rica, and man was so fk insane, the people ask for this song in the meet and great and they play it, was epic, the bass of robert please, and lars on the drums, that day was rainig but this song calm all the storm, wathever, was epic
Orion has no beginning, and no end. It is eternal, and the 9 minutes we hear is simply the tiny segment we mortals are blessed with.

One of Cliff's (RIP) finest! I first heard this only a couple of years after it came out and has been my favorite Metallica song since.
Hail Metallica!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
🔥🤘🏽🔥
Metallica has a few other instrumentals in addition to Orion, all of which are excellent.
Call of Ktulu - Ride the Lightning album
Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) - Killem All album
To Live Is To Die - Justice for All album
Suicide & Redemption - Death Magnetic album
To Live is To Die 😍😍😍
To Live is to Die isn't a pure instrumental, though.
I got to visit Washington DC as one of the first classes aloud after 9/11. This song is one of my absolute favorites that I comfonted myself on a bus, Linkin Park was one of my only other cohesive things I can put together mentally. Perfect song.
Love and respect. The intro part is a bass guitar btw, if I remember correctly.
This is so kick ass! Remember jamming to it when i was like 12! Glad to hear this one.
There you go 🙏
I love seeing people's reaction to this beautiful piece. Like watching a small child seeing Christmas Morning after it snows for the first time.
Love Metallica! So many amazing songs to choose from….had the S&M album blasting away earlier while I was decorating!
After all these years... hearing it so many times... still takes me there 🔥🤘🏽🔥
They played this song last Friday here in Mexico City, it was awesome, after 6 previous Metallica concerts, finally I had the experience to hear Orion live, so blessed
I just saw them play this live about a month ago. Absolutely loved it. Call Of Ktulu is another great Cliff Burton penned, instrumental.
One of the first bass lines I truly learned. Love cliffs work…rip 🤘
Called chill out love the smile 😊
This song really is something to hear live! It’s beyond amazing
Great reaction Aileen love that smile all the through this reaction 🤘
it has probably been mentioned, but your description of the structure of the music covering everything and not needing vocals is due to the musical education that the bassist had, this piece is just a properly arranged piece of music, structure, arrangement, composition is extremely well done.
If you have not done so, you need to listen to S&M which has a full orchestra backing Metallica. it is honestly epic. Battery is amazing, or if you want instrumental - Call of Ktulu another one written with cliff on Ride the Lightning if IRC,
it fills out metallica in the right ways.
or possibly check the KMFDM remix of King Nothing. gives metallica and ultra heavy beat and fills out the low end very well
I love looking and seeing the love for music in your eyes.
Excellent explaination at the end, i felt the same
A great and underappreciated composition.
I didn't catch this till 12 hours after u uploaded but this is one of their greatest..good choice Aileen❤
When we were young there was only music. As an old drummer I say keep playing stay open you never know
i see metallica playing this in costa rica, and man was so fk insane, the people ask for this song in the meet and great and they play it, was epic, the bass of robert please, and lars on the drums, that day was rainig but this song calm all the storm, wathever, was epic
I was 20 " Cough " years old when this album came out. Fantastic album. Still rocking out after all these years 🤟
