      I prefer short games myself. I feel like the game could have been 4-6 hours shorter and that would have been perfect.
      Still Uncharted is my favorite Naughty dog series. I didn't really like The Last of Us 2 as that game was LONG

    • @RetroGameCorps
      @RetroGameCorps ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThePhawx I’m torn between the two. There are some moments where Uncharted feels tedious, but the constant stress of TLOU can be unpleasant too. I actually never finished the first one, I had to finish it by watching playthroughs on TH-cam. I really enjoyed the accessibility options in TLOU2, it was a lot better of an experience for me.
      Edited to clarify, I like long games when they are story-driven, like Naughty Dog games, or God of War. Big open-world games are completely overwhelming to me; for example as soon as the city opened up in Spider-Man I never picked it back up.

      I alternated between playing The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 on my Steam Deck via Chiaki over the past two weeks. After finishing them both, The Last of Us is the better game, while I had more fun playing through Uncharted 4.
      It is worth noting that I had already played The Last of Us and it was my first time playing Uncharted 4.
      Even so, the last tunnel fight in TLOU with multiple bloaters and clickers still kicked my ass way more than any fight in Uncharted 4, which felt more like an interactive action movie than an actual game.

    Hey Phawx, thanks for including a segment about latency. Would you consider doing a dedicated Steamdeck video on input latency? The Gamecop framelimiter on SteamOS is atrocious on input latency and makes games like Elden Ring really difficult to play. No major outlet or youtuber focuses on this issue and Valve isn't addressing it.

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yea, I have typically looked at it on cheaper handhelds, but I can start including this going forward with every big game. Once I can collect enough data, I'll be able to make a more comprehensive look.

    11:46 I'm guessing this is like the disocclusion issues in GoW's FSR 2. FSR 2.1.1 should fair a bit better. Could you also do a comparison with a fast gaming PC to see if it's the implementation or upscaling struggles with the very low resolution?

  • @tdome3000
    @tdome3000 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    You should never use the frame limiter from Gamescope - it renders ahead at least 1 frame and the input latency goes down. If you want a 40 fps limiter, then just put the display's refresh rate to 40 Hz and activate vsync from the game - this is a natural 40 fps limiter from the game, and not from the OS, and the latency should be better.

    • @ThePhawx

    • @fapman4878
      @fapman4878 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every single Vsync implementation will add at least 1 frame of latency. That's how Vsync works. Vsync gets really bad if it adds more than that, which gamescope doesn't. Most games' Vsync implementations are horrendous. Either lots of input lag, terrible frame pacing, or both. Gamescope's is at least consistent, since it's implemented at the driver level.

  • @Cwiiis
    @Cwiiis ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great stuff, but I wouldn't use the touchpad to test latency - likelihood is there's extra latency there that doesn't exist when using button controls... Touchpad firmware is pretty complex and has lots of rejection, debouncing and smoothing features that will incur additional latency.

    • @contytub
      @contytub ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you are right but technically most people would use the touchpads so it makes sense to use that as a refference . Maybe the touch pad handling may need some work ? ...

    • @Cwiiis
      @Cwiiis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@contytub mm, I don't think that's true - especially for console ports, I would more expect most people to be using the analog control sticks. Using a touchpad for a game like this would be pretty awkward in comparison. Either way, these are not general control latency numbers, they're rough numbers for end-to-end latency from the touchpad to the screen. I'd be more interested in end-to-end stick/button controls to screen, and even going further, separate latency numbers for the controls and the screen (presumably you could find this by using a screen with a known latency and doing the same tests, recording the delta between external screen and internal - of course, this presumes negligible latency for an external screen vs internal, but I believe that's about right).
      The thing that makes it worth highlighting is that the touchpad likely has *much* higher latency than the other controls, but people might go off thinking that these are general numbers that they can compare to similar numbers on other systems. They give a false impression of the general amount of input latency on the Steam Deck.

    • @contytub
      @contytub ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Cwiiis yep if you put it that way . Indeed people need to make the difference between input lag and output lag to know what to work on and improve. the biggest selling point of the deck is the touchpads. If you can go without, there are faster or smaller alternatives... even with a bit of extra input lag still there's nothing better than the deck at the moment so I guess it's going to be improved in time

    Does the game have native SIAPI support or at least support mixing mouse
    and gamepad inputs, locked icons so they don't flicker back and forth?
    What is the quality of the mouse? Is it raw input so there is no
    acceleration being observed? Easy way to test is setting trackpad
    sensitivity to do a 180 on an edge to edge swipe and see if the camera
    travels the same 180 when the trackpad movement is fast or slow.
    Update: Seems answer is no to SIAPI and game has mouse acceleration.

    Forgive my ignorance, but what is the distinction between 40Hz and 40FPS, both in general and in the context of the Steam Deck? I've mostly been using the Steam Deck's limiter (if that's what it's called) to a set value, but considering the emphasis on the video also lock it at 40, I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or missing something.
    Either way, thank you so much for such an in-depth and clear video. It makes playing on the Deck that much more of a breeze. :)

    • @Fina1Ragnarok

      40Hz is the rate that the screen refreshes: 40 times per second
      40FPS is how many frames the game renders per second.
      Having them match provides a smoother experience as there is no waiting or holding frames which can cause stutter or refreshing the display mid-frame which causes screen-tearing.

    40 Hz refresh with 49 cal may be nathnaticly alined but not in practice where a refresh abit higher might work better so increasing the raye to 43 Hz might bet best so a bit of time should be spent. Systems are not linear as many factors are involved.

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ultimately, I love VRR/Freesync/Gsync
      In this instance how we can never actually hit 60fps consistently but get around 50-60 at lowest settings, the only thing I would see as a negative is you are guaranteeing that you'll get the absolute worst battery life possible. Right, like, the system would be pushing itself to it's absolute limits at all times.
      It would almost be a setting exclusively for people that play always connected to a power source. Otherwise, 85 mins of battery life would be a fact of life on Steam Deck for example.

    • @GordonGordon
      @GordonGordon ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePhawx oh. I rarely use variable on my gsync. I think the biggest advantage would be to set arbitrary frame rates AND avoid the current input lag that the Deck adds with their implementation.

    • @GordonGordon
      @GordonGordon ปีที่แล้ว

      For instance, my pc can hit high rates, but i would lock to a lower frame rate (75 instead of 120) for stability and to avoid excess power draw. For example, games that average 50 on deck, setting VRR to 45 would do that and make the occasional wobbles below that less noticeable.
      That's how i would use and encourage VRR for a power limited system.

    Being that both of these games like Spider-Man were designed around performing at 30 fps I'd assume that 30 fps would feel best for the overall experience.

      @Nordin There are some games where the frame rate is tied to the animation speed. For example, a game that runs at 30 FPS with the animation speed set for that specific frame rate, will run at its normal speed. However, doubling the frame rate would be better, right? Well, as long as you also want the game to be two times faster. In this case, for this game, there is no animation speed linked to the frame rate, so run the game at whatever frame rate you want!

      @@cjlees thats '90s games at best had something like that. And From Software games

    • @cjlees
      @cjlees ปีที่แล้ว

      @@damianabregba7476 Not necessarily, even the new Demon Slayer game has the frame rate linked to the animation speed. That's why there is a built-in frame rate limiter in the game. If you set the built-in frame limiter to 60, but the game is only running at 30 FPS, then it will run at half speed.

    When playing this did you try the performance with the swapfile? if you don't know what I'm talking about, check out a video on TH-cam called "EASY Performance Boosts for Steam Deck!" made by "CryoByte33", on games like Red dead it gave a significant fps boost

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I need to look at this in general. On face value, it shouldn't offer any improvements unless you're constantly swapping, it could be game-by-game but I need to look at it in general.
