Star Trek - Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN)

- The Nerd boldly goes where no bad game should ever go, by beaming down a collection of games based upon the sci-fi series Star Trek, made for the Vectrex, Atari 2600, ColecoVision and NES. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 49.
Star Trek is one of the biggest phenomenons in the history of pop culture. The original television series was created by Gene Roddenberry and aired for 3 seasons from 1966-1969. It has been spun off into several different series such as Star Trek: TNG and Voyager to name just a few as well as a whole movie franchise and reboots by J.J. Abrams. The show launched the careers of many actors such as William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Patrick Stewart just to name a few.
With the mass production of collectibles and toys and the advent of arcades and home systems, Star Trek found its way to the world of video games. In this episode the Nerd boldly goes where no nerd has gone before, and takes a look at Star Trek games for Vectrex, Atari 2600, and the Colecovision, which are all basically the same.
Lastly the Nerd reviews the NES Star Trek 25th Anniversary game. The game was originally released in 1992 by Ultra Games and has surprisingly good cut-scenes for its time. That being said its still frustrating, confusing, and cryptic. We also learn not to mess with Klingons. They don't mess around.

They should have gotten a stunt double that looks nothing like James to play him in the klingon fight.
Big black dude with a white skull cap
xLDKx NewYorker I'm a year late but I was gonna say that GAHAAAHAHAHAHAA
they should've used one when James did that wall bounce thing.
Lol
Ha!
Why do I get the feeling that James and Mike have re-enacted fights from Star Trek in their spare-time before?
Hahahahhaahahahah great comment
Is because they did
I love the awkward cut to that shot of James jumping against the wall. It's one of the better editing gags he's done
Lmao exactly
also if anyone is wondering when it happened, it happened at 4:20

Star Trek fight choreography check list -
1. Grabs onto ceiling or pipe of some description and kicks out with both legs.
2. Double handed clobber.
3. Judo chop.
4. Vault / throw into wall.
Read this during the fight scene and realised you could make a bingo game out of this
But no obvious stunt doubles...
Seriously, the choreography for the fight scenes in all the Star Trek series' were pretty bad.
As bad as they were you must admit that they had a certain charm to them
I've always loved Star Trek fights, they're just sooooooo bad lol
I love how they made a ridiculously weird fight scene similar to the original series. James knows how to properly pay tribute to the show :)
this episode is like the ultimate nirvana of nerdom...i love it ^^
also the mention to the genesis
That was one of the most ridiculous and poorly choreographed fight scenes I've ever seen in my life, it was just like watching a real episode of ToS! Great work!
Not really. It's missing the painfully obvious stunt doubles.
@@gengarzilla1685 maybe they couldn't afford that
The Led Zeppelin symbols are pretty rad...
8:03 What I'm getting from this is that Led Zeppelin joined Starfleet and violated the prime directive by playing for the natives, who now revere them as gods.
They were also reprimanded due to rumors of backwards Satanic messages...
Now THAT'S metal!
If its Led Zeppelin, what's the name of the song?
I mean they do come from the land of the ice and snow after all, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
With their hammer of the gods of course.
Can't you read the sign : pointing to sign--'NO STAIRWAY '
Best part of this video after all these years is that the Klingon doesn't just get transported into the room, he comes in through a door. lol
The Vectrex is one of the coolest consoles I've seen.
Right? ! I want one, now! :D
Get one, it's a great system and games are simple but a lot of fun, wish James would do an episode on it.

"Mercy this, mother f*cker!"
The little skits with AVGN are really hit or miss. This one was a huge hit. Hilariously accurate Star Trek fight scene parody. A+
I think James and Mike might just be the greatest choreographers in the history of action scenes. lol
Here's a fun random fact. Dr. Martin Luther King was a Star Trek fan. He actually talked Nichelle Nichols to stay in the show.
It's always good to have friends in high places.
What a nice thing.
Right after nichelle was about to quit when paramount was withholding her fanmail
Strange definition of "fun"
@Hairway to Steven Took me a long time to hear it. Or rather read about it.
If I had a time machine, I'd tape all AVGN episodes and take them with me to 1991, and share them with the people!
Takfarinas Abdiouene grandfather paradox. You'll kill the production. Then there would be nothing for avgn to shit on. Meaning you won't have videos to go back to show. And the games won't stop being produced.
So they WILL make them, and avgn will shit on them. And you have videos to go back in time to stop them from making it so avgn doesn't have material so that you don't have proof so that theyndont stop production so that avgn has material and you have proof to stop them so that theyndont make it so that avgn has material so that you have proof so that they will stop it so that avgn doesn't hav
Just like some ST time travel - related episodes.
"It's penetrating my auditory nerves I must de-activate this game's power supply" LOL
To be honest a Star Trek video game would be awesome. Just think about making a custom captain, upgrading your ship, exploring new worlds and controlling parts of the ship and its crew.
I played Star Trek online and that got me entertained for a while.
pathg13 I loved the ship combat in that game! Sending Power to different sub-systems, loading out your ship, and then engaging enemy ships! BUT THOSE FUCKING PLANET SIDE MISSIONS! Every time I heard "We need to send a landing party" I would consider just logging out!
They just made a new Star Trek game this year I think, but sadly, it's a pile of FUCKING GOAT SHIT!
There was a great Star Trek game called "Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force" back in 2000, it's a FPS so it's not exactly what you're looking for, but I'd give it a run if you at least enjoy FPS games on some level.
Seducing green women...
Mike does a pretty good Klingon accent.
Also it'd be pretty funny if they put in an obvious stunt double for James during some scenes of the fight.
Whos mike?
The guy who plays the Klingon. He helps James out a lot with the channel and has also been in a few other AVGN videos as the Joker and the Cowardly Lion.
what did he say ?
I have fond memories of playing the NES Star Trek. I beat it as a 14 YO with no help. It was a fun, thinking game that was different than the other games I was playing like Arkanoid or Spy Hunter. I felt like part of the show. I remember mom yelling for me to turn the volume down. I guess the sound must have been irritating.

I loved the genesis joke. I legit did not expect him to pull out a genesis console.
Listen from 8:50 to 9:27 - that would have sounded like a lot of fun to a kid back in the day.
why? i dont get it
Lot of cool stuff to do.
Imagine someone looking through the window during that fight scene
3rd time this week!!
I've been playing thru the avgn episode games for jokes and Star Trek on NES is surprisingly good. The graphics and sound is awesome and they do a perfect job of recreating the experience of watching the original series. While this is its greatest strength, it is also its greatest weakness. It doesnt quite feel like a game, more like a hybrid between a game and watching Star Trek, so after a level or two the novelty wears off and you dont want to play anymore. Kinda like when you're watching Star Trek and after an episode or two you want to do something else. Very faithful indeed.
Please don't act like everyone is you.

4:18 Best part. If you watch there's a scene in the fight where James just runs and jumps into the wall for no reason lol he didn't get thrown.
I cannot believe that some people dont know Led Zeppelin, or even that dont recognize Black Dog.
Feno Mozo i can. pretty easily.
Feno Mozo So? I know of Led Zeppelin, but don't know any of his songs. Why does that matter?
Black Mage Hahahaha. Nice troll.
Feno Mozo Don't know either of them.
Feno Mozo It's such a good song. The musical structure of it is pretty interesting as well.
The Genesis joke was kinda funny.
Yeah I liked that one :D
Agent Nobu I understood that reference...
"Shall I add the repellent to your inventory, Sir?"
"No."
"Let's _definitely_ not protect ourselves from pathogens our immune systems haven't been exposed to."
"But only then is when you realise how ASTRONOMICALLY ASS THIS GAME IS!"
They didn't travel to 1920s Earth. They traveled to an alien planet that had built a society based around 1920s organized crime about which they had a book.

So functionally the same thing? Both preposterous.

Who gives a shit?!
That has to be one of the goofiest premises I've ever heard of. Awesome.
That Klingon fight scene between the James and Mike cracks me up every time lol
+Paul Venkman It's when he throws himself against the wall for no reason... x3
+selfsurprise just like the real Capt Kirk
The Rated Oni Channel True. But from what I recall of the series (assuming the Enterprise wasn't being attacked by a giant spaceborne Abraham Lincoln, or something equally dramatic) Kirk was most likely trying to seduce the wall rather than exclusively slamming into it. Not that the two aren't interrelated... :3
So many classic Kirk moves in fight with the Klingon.
The Avgn Trek Theme is actually pretty good, damn.
I’ve never been a Trek fan, but this episode really makes me laugh and I always come back to it.
The level of frustration he has with his crew I find hysterical 😂
Also the tropes and stereotypes he pays homage to are spot on.
Happy 50th, Star Trek. May you continue to boldly go!
Well, as of next generation it is their continuing mission.
Star Trek stopped going years before its 50th. Geordi is smart. Can he make it go?
Star Trek sucks now. It hasn't been good since DS9 ended.
And it's been completely ruined by white saviours
Did you know, the Original star trek warp effect was a glass of water and food coloring with glitter.
+Andy Guy CantYouLift i think you mean the beam effect ;P

Kind of, when they warp to the ship. the effect that plays when they arrive is the water trick

Wait, you're in a TOS uniform but that was a TNG Klingon. (But that's okay, TNG Klingons are cooler.)
Those could be Klingons from the movies.
One way or another we don't speak of this with outsiders
starcrunch061 Yeah, but they don't have the TOS uniforms there...
@@DarthRushy it was never explained how and when the klingons evolved into the look they have in TNG, so maybe they developed the weird forheads when starfleet still had the OS uniforms?

Tune in for the continued adventures of Captain James T. Nerd as he boldly explores shitty games where few had gone before.
AVGN should make a 2nd Star Trek episode, this time covering the Next Generation games
No, those games are actually pretty good. He threw a few of them around when trying to get to the NES Game.
stdamon I was given the Gameboy TNG title. It was terrible for me, not sure if anyone enjoyed that one.
Try the Genesis or SNES one on Rom or emulator. The Game Boy one is a port of the NES one that isn't very good. Its just pew pew pew space battle.
Watching this years later, and I just have to say, this might be the best fight scene ever committed to film.
Would’ve been funnier if he said “To boldly go where everyone refuses to.”
The Star Trek fight is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. I love when James randomly throws himself against the wall
Who's here after watching the outtakes for this episode?
Me :)
:D
Me too!:)
10:10 is probably my most favorite moment in AVGN ever
I've run into a wierd youtube glitch. my computer started lagging out like crazy, then suddenly the video was an interview with the creators of homestarrunner, but everything around the video (the title, the recommend section and everything) was angry video game nerd episode 49. I am leaving this comment to see witch video it goes to.
and it was the avgn video.
Fascinating.
Sorry, I just had to throw in that reference.
The Genesis joke refers to the original start trek movies 2 The Wrath of Kahn. And 3 A search for spock. Long story short there was a planet called Genesis that was an experment by the federation of planets. The Kilingons wanted it for themselves.
"Start" Trek? "Kahn"? "Kilingons"? Did you type this on a flip phone?
I love the attention to detail of the fight scenes pulled from the original series.
The bit where the symbols match the Led Zeppelin IV album had me dying.
whats the similarity between the enterprise and toilet paper? they are searching for klingons!
haha lol
UBERGEEKZILLA boooo, BOOOOO!
What's the difference between the Enterprise and a garbage scow? A garbage scow hauls garbage and the Enterprise gets hauled away as garbage.

From 7 years in the future in 2021. And the nostalgia is even stronger. I even have nostalgia for 7 years ago when you made this comment. 😅😂

I actually really liked the NES game at the time. You have to hand it to them for actually trying to create an experience like the TV show. At the time it was much more likely they'd turn it into some crappy side-scrolling shooter that really had little to do with the series.
THIS is what the Nerd was and always will be remembered as.
It always amazed me how James puts a game inside an original NES without doing it the "right" way in order for it to work.
“I tried calling it a piece of shit. I tried giving it the finger.” 🤣🤣
The fight scene was still a better love story than twilight.
I remember playing the PC version of "Star Trek: 25th Anniversary" and its sequel, "Judgement Rites". Loved them both.
I think I shatnered myself
Man, i played the vectrex as a kid and i for some reason never knew i was playing a Star Trek game! Mind Blown!

A Piece of the Action isn't about going back in time. They find a 1920s gangster themed planet in their own time that was caused by a primitive and "highly imitative" people getting their hands on a book about Chicago gangsters from the 1920s.
My dad loved star trek when I was young I'd see him watch it. I thought the klingon's forehead was made of peanut butter
0:34 I’m digging this version of the Star Trek theme! Nice guitar work!!
THanks for the upload. I wish you would have included Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
And the Super Nintendo/Sega Genesis Star Trek The Next Generation video games as well!
The last star trek game he reviewed doesn't actually look that bad.
If you're talking about 25th Anniversary, it's not. It's pretty cool. There is a PC version though that is absolutely incredible. Comes on a CD that has all the dialogue voiced by the original cast. You can probably find it on abandonware sites. Might be hard to find the cd version though.
***** Personal opinion.

Um, not sure exactly what you're asking about.... For one, I mentioned the PC version, nothing about a gameboy version, cause I never played it, and I said the NES version was cool too, soooo........ why are you quoting magazine reviews from 22 years ago? Lol man I don't understand.

Knuckles: The Nintendo characters like those fuzzy things. Don't they?
Rayman: Oh, yes.
Knuckles: Well, frankly, I never liked Nintendo characters. They remind me of Regulan bloodworms.
[the Sega characters laugh]
Toad: That cossack!
Fox Mccloud: Easy, lad. You ought to be more forgiving.
Knuckles: Though... I just remembered. There is one Nintendo character who doesn't remind me of a Regulan bloodworm. That's Mario. A Regulan bloodworm is soft, and shapeless. But Mario isn't soft. Mario may be a swaggering, overbearing, tin-plated dictator with delusions of godhood. But he's not soft.
Fox Mccloud: [as Toad gets up] Take it easy, lad. Everybody is entitled to an opinion.
[Toad sits down]
Knuckles: That's right. And if I think that Mario is a Denebian slime devil, well, that's my opinion, too.
Fox Mccloud: [as Toad gets up again] Don't do it, mister, and that's an order.
Toad: But you heard what he called the Captain!
Fox Mccloud: Forget it. It's not worth fighting for. We're big enough to take a few insults.
[swaps Toad's empty glass with another]
Fox Mccloud: Now, drink your drink.
[Toad sits down and obliges]
Knuckles: Of course, I'd say that Mario deserves his ship. We like the Starship Mario. We, we really do! That sagging, old rust bucket is designed like a garbage scow.
[Fox Mccloud's ears perk up]
Knuckles: Half the quadrant knows it; that's why they're learning to speak Segani!
Toad: [outraged] Mr. Mccloud!
Fox Mccloud: [to Knuckles] Laddie... don't ya think you should... rephrase that?
Knuckles: You're right. I should.
Knuckles: I didn't mean to say that the Starship Mario should be hauling garbage. I meant to say that it should be hauled away AS garbage!
[Knuckles laughs. Fox Mccloud stands up, decks him, and a brawl ensues]
This is my favourite fight scene you've ever done hahahaha
I wonder if that's actual Klingon that he's speaking.
It is def actual Klingon, but it might be nonsense. I only know because we use the word "Q'apla" at my work (well, at least the IT department uses it).
The Klingon that Mike is speaking uses that word when he enters the room.
