- Masters Of The Air episode 8: P-51 Mustang Airstrike (2024) with Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan
Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
From executive producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the series features a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.
I uhhh have a lot of questions.... Why the lead flight is lower than the rest before commencing the attack run?
Why use Mustangs instead of the Jug which is far more suited in attacking fortifications which also can carry 12 rockets instead of 6 and 8xMGs instead of 6?
Mustangs are not suited for low and slow rocket strikes instead of high angle and speed.
Why the lead flight kick rudder right infront of his wingmen instead to the side of the nose risking collision?
Telling your friend to bail at that alt?
"Those are not British cavalry, they are lighthorsemen. They are going to dismount."
Sometimes you have to act different to surprise your enemy.
This time it's just some Hollywood work.
Several answers..during those times aircraft were used whenever however they could and so happens it was Tuskegee...sure they flew other aircraft but most likely the nearest field for this mission was most likely them and just so happened to be P-51D ... So they installed tanks, rockets and extra ammo .. as for the rest of the details they weren't flying that fast and its all in the moment. In hind sight pilots did crazy things that were outside the norm but got the job done and high level stress situations anything goes. Training kicks in and the rest is up to you. How armies conduct themselves today wasn't the way back then.
For example Brits were ordered to shoot down V-1s but instead they took it upon themselves to use their wingtips and force buzz bomb off its course and into the drink or random open field. The price for that maneuver was loss control of aircraft but they did it anyway.
@@strizhi6717 There's also the question of range, since they were operating near the limit of the P-51's range
Most likely Guns would not shoot below so he was trying to come under the fire.
@@nickpeter6770 They use mustangs cause of their extra range
Wow! I am constantly amazed by the fact that The Tuskegee Airmen were the ONLY pilots who flew missions in P-51C or D Mustangs during World War II.
huh
What?? You’re forgetting they mostly used the a model
@@MrPontiacLover Ok then my mistake-forgive me. How's this the Tuskegee Airmen were the ONLY pilots who flew missions in Mustangs. Better?
@ training who knows
Most of the movies about the 8th Air Force focused on the bombers. Of course, they had escorts which ordinarily would have escorted them from England. To the best of my knowledge only two series and one movie have featured the Red Tails, they were only a small part of Masters of the Air. If you know of more series or movies in which they are mentioned, I would be grateful if you could give me the names. In my life I have seen dozens of movies about WW II. I did not see one featuring my old man's unit until I was in my late sixties. I could tell you a story about the time another unit of the 15th A.F. had to land at Ramitelli and share tents with the pilots because there was not additional shelter for them, it was winter and they did not want to sleep outside.
Someone really needs to explain to these CGI artists, about the laws of physics and also how 'drop' tanks work!?!
After my father's funeral, I met some of his old buddies who told me of a pilot who could not get rid of his tanks as they engaged the enemy. He did not make it back.
@ericvaughnhutchins8339 Drop tanks did occasionally hang up. Pilots would jiggle the aircraft, to shake them loose, but whoever made this CGI does not understand physics!
@@philthrelfall5294 They did the best they could with the limited knowledge they possessed. Few people alive today who have flight hours in the era of aerial refueling could have informed them. Some folks complained about
the story line including the Red Tails. There are people who are happy to see the Fifteenth Air Force getting some recognition. It's a made for TV movie. I hope people enjoy what's enjoyable. The planes are of secondary importance to the crew. Where the story was really distorted was in not telling the story of the Tuskegee Airman who bailed out over Austria and was promptly hung. But that would have made for a somewhat truncated story arc.
@ericvaughnhutchins8339 I enjoyed the movie Red Tails, which has much worse aerial scenes, but more credible characters. Masters of Air promised much, yet delivered little. The gritty characters & realism of Band of Brothers, replaced by 2D cartoon characters & secondhand Star Wars CGI like aerial scenes. Such a wasted opportunity.
By this point the entire series had jumped the shark with its Star Wars CGI battles and nonsense script.
Those German troops appeared in double quicktime - on the scene before the pilot touched the ground !!!
Absolutely imbossible to bail out from thumbling and spinning plane that low altitude. Looks like they had ejection seats in mustangs those days🤣
As usual the aviation geeks are upset about how these shows/movies are portayed. Dont forget we are only a small percentage of the population that knows better. Everyone else watching needs that action packed bs to stay interested so stop complaining and be grateful we at least got this. If not start donating to the cause but it still wouldnt be enough for what you consider "proper"
Understand what you say and partly agree, but for such a very small effort (and a very slight detuning of the visual dramatics), it could have been SO GOOD & appealed to almost everybody! A real missed opportunity.
@philthrelfall5294 yea but whose really paying attention to detail other than us?
@@pilotdave1000 Yes, but then people ask me if I watched it & I have to say I can't (because of the gross inaccuracies). When I explain my concerns, most of them go, "Oh, that seems fair, I wonder why the makers did not talk with their technical advisors?"! All for the want of a little sensible dialogue!
💯
For what it is, it’s pretty cool
finally a realistic scene, not like Red tails, it seems an videogame played on super easy mode.
You're kidding right?
Why do CGI/special effects look worse now than 20 years ago? If you look at the Memphis Belle the effects look correct whereas these days the look like they were done on a 128k Spectrum computer.
Memphis Belle looks correct? Please check your eyes!
Memphis Belle uses real aircraft.
Отважные американские парни
I’m getting Red Tails Vibes.
Red Tailes ?
Yes Sir!
Red Tails , the Tuskegee Airmen
Bro, did any of those 4 mustangs get back to base? Why use the Mustang when you can use the P-47 which is far better for this role?
Range, this was a long range mission
As missions went further into Germany, German fighters would be waiting for our bombers and knew that the 47's were about at the end of their range.
Also, da wird ziemlich viel geredet - für die Dramaturgie vielleicht ganz unterhaltsam.
Aber Krieg ist kein Entertainment!
The Hollywoodification of this show is laughable. It's hard to keep immersion with stupid lines like "oh you gonna pay for that". Honestly, is on the level of a Star Wars space battle. Fine for Star Wars, but lame for a WW2 epic.
Hollywood has screwed up pretty much all of the ww2 aviation movies.
Did you watch the whole series? It’s pretty good
@StarWarsObservation-vs2sg Don't have to make movies to know what is right and wrong.
Those drop tanks were made out of paper..only had to last a few hours..
I’m always puzzled when the storyline shown a plot where another pilot show another pilot how to do things with his own aircraft. There’s another Pakistan movie Shareal showing another pilot teaching another pilot how to restart the engine in mid flight, and we have the flight lead teach another qualified pilot how to drop his external tanks. These plots doesn’t make sense, a pilot is qualified to fly his own plane. If he doesn’t know those things, he shouldn’t be flying anywhere, he ne a burden for his flight.
Needs must.
THE REDTAILS
Yeeeesss. They won the war in the skies over Europe. Didn't you hear?
what a load of garbage, poorly done.
These CGI Mustangs are laughable. The so called artists who did them need to rethink their careers! The CGI in the film Redtails was much, much better.
Red tails wasn’t any better
Maybe cause this movie was **MOSTLY** about the b17
Cry
Is not the artist, look at the producers and the budget first.
Its a TV show bro with 9 episodes on apple TV. Irs called a budget
Struggled to watch series. Huge disappointment. Such potential wasted
the first 3 episodes were great but the rest awful
How come there were black pilots during the world war is this true
There was an unit of black pilots in ww2. Watch the movie redtails.
@@russellbrown1814 For the love of god do not watch the movie redtails
They're the Tuskegee Airmen, A.k.a. the Red Tails, and they fought through segregation to prove they could fight in WW2.
The CGI is horrid , the writing is its equal. The CGI actually looks like stop motion claymation , Just worse. Also why would these pilots not speak like a professional fighter pilot, instead of portraying them as kids on bicycles.
@TP-ie3hj in 1945, there were 20 year old lieutenants in B-17 captains' seats. They were kids. Which was part of the point of the story. In the early years of this century, I met someone who had been an 18 year old combat Mustang pilot in 1945. Living in Palm Springs, I encountered many Jars coming home or on their way. To me, in my 60's, the few and the proud 18 year olds looked like children. All wars are children's wars. Visit a V.A. graveyard and read headstones.
Bullshitl; this is Red Tails.
What do you mean this is Red Tails ??
As of most of this series ,not very well made ,tried to be like the "Pacific" or " Band of Brothers " and failed badly
over-rated DEI hires, typical hollywood propaganda.
so much bullshit in that it was ridiculous
