I cannot emphasize enough just what a treat it is to have an unrepentantly evil character in a story and have it make perfect sense and be beleivable, without sacrificing one iota of depth! That's practically unheard of, especially in the age of trying to make every character sympathetic no matter how little sense it makes or how badly it fits.
"You can defeat some bosses before they even reach the 2nd phase" I managed to kill sundowner literally by only the normal blade because the ERA annoyed me so much. If force is not effective, you're not using enough force.

Mistral- A young yet aimless youth looking for a greater purpose that fulfills her bloody outlook on life… Monsoon- A wise yet nihilistic zen who believes that all are the way they should be, no matter how hard we try changing it… Sundowner- A charismatic, openly honest, yet a simple minded man-child who believes that conflict is what helps makes humans “express” themselves to one another… Sam- A wondering samurai who lost identity and ideals to forces that he couldn’t cut down, and becomes nothing more but a new tool for those sinister forces until someone else completes the fight that he failed to do himself… Armstrong- A man who wants to create a nation for those who want to fight for what THEY believe in without any rules holding them back, NO MATTER THE COST…
Crispin Freeman NAILED this voice. Cruel without being melodramatic, compelling even when talking about war; badass even in death...all from the guy who played Winston in Overwatch."Peanut butler's a part of who we are!"
Sundowner and Sam were the best characters in the game imo. I actually loved Sundowner's boss fight mostly because of the setting and the soundtrack. There's just something about fighting a boss on a roof while it's raining.
Sundowner, Sam, Monsoon and Armstrong are equally awesome. I can’t decide who I love more because none of them have a severe lack of character development like many other game characters.
Mistral: The battlefield is my real home. Monsoon: Pain is what makes us human. Sam: I lost who I was on my climb to glory. Sundowner: MO' WAR CRIMES EQUALS MO' MONEY!
“So the others have been spouting their philosophical bullshit, huh? Bunch of pussys. I’m gonna spare you the shit, I FUCKING LOVE KILLING PEOPLE FOR MONEY!!! I LIKE TO BATHE IN THE BLOOD OF MY ENEMIES!!!”
If you think about it the "memes" of the Game (scientifically and in a joke sense) succeeded to be passed into a new generation. I love watching this Game get tons of love after all these years. You guys are awesome. Cheers from Spain
Fun fact, There is another character who wears reactive armour for protection as well. In metal gear acid 2, Harab Serap, the game's first boss has reactive armour worn around his fatigue trousers so it looks like a skirt. As a result, grenades and other explosions cannot affect him. He can also rocket punch you with his flesh hands and can regenerate new ones.
Usually, the first playtrough goes like this: "Did you learn to parry, you filthy casual?" "Uuuuuhm no-" "TOO BAD!!" *gets clapped by Monsoon* 27 tries later... "I've finally learnt! You're down to 40.0%!!" *lyrics start playing* "Uh oh" "I have WON this!" "Shit!!!" And in Revengeance: "So, do you still remember how to parry, you filthy casual?" "Casual?! I've fully S-Ranked Very Hard, I can do this all day." "Oh... Well, then- It doesn't matter! Your enemy will be the camera!!!" "FFFUUUUUUUUUUU!!!"
My first time playing this game (pretty recently) I beat sundowner and I watched the uzaki anime right after, it goes to say how surprised I was when they referenced him
Meti: Talks about the history of Machetes being turned into weapons of war. Also Meti: shows clips of Kukris instead of Machetes. Now I'm just confused.
Little fun fact his swords have more in common (in design) with executioner swords. A two handed weapon with a square or extremely rounded tip designed to well.... take someone's head off
Real life events kind of gave me a different interpretation of Red Sun. I live in California and the fires that took place uncomfortably close to where I live changed the way the sun looked. With the smoke filling the air, the sun and atmosphere was pretty much red. There was also an ominous warm wind threatening to blow the embers of fire onward to other areas of dead and dry vegetation. With that said, this became my interpretation of Red Sun: The hot wind blows, filled with fire and death. The vultures fly overhead, eyeing the easy pickings of the dead left on the ground. The smoke and fire of the battlefield has turned the sun blood red and that red sun shines over his idea of paradise, The chaos and destruction of war.
Metal Gear Rising is perhaps one of my favorite games and the boss fights are thought provoking. Even if you just met them once, you learn so much about their ideologies and morals before the fight begins Even if it's a spin-off, it still fits inside the story telling of Metal Gear franchise
The part "The reptile tail ripped from its back" makes me think of when Raiden cuts up the enemy cyborgs and rips their the spines out. I mainly thought this because if you were to call a person "a reptile" you'd be saying they aren't human and cyborgs aren't completely human. I know that's not what the song is saying, but it's cool thought
I like all of the music in MGR. However, I knew there was some reason why I liked "Red Sun" the most out of all of them. Sundowner was a great villain in my opinion. And while he may not be as difficult as Sam or Armstrong, I thought his fight was fun for what it was. He didn't want money or fame, he simply liked killing people and saw it as a passion. Sundowner was a good old fashioned, bloodthirsty, bully. Sometimes a villain doesn't have to be complex, they just need a direct motive.
I agree. Sundowner is a character who can be flat-out evil, laugh about the murder he commits, look over the dissected brains of thousands of children ready to be implanted into a cyborg body, and other assorted crimes... and yet be one of the most charismatic, honest, and outright enjoyable villains of a story. It's hard to make an unrepentant scumbag like Sundowner come across as entertaining to the point that you both love _and_ hate them. A good deal of villains will just make you hate them. But Sundowner manages to do both. You end up loving how evil he is, and he doesn't BS you about hidden motivations. He even describes himself as an "honest warmonger" trying to make a living. War is his common purpose, and that's what he loves. This game is pretty great because of its big players with hidden agendas. Mistral wanting to find a place where a killer like her belongs. Monsoon being a slave to his nihilistic, defeatist views and bleak memes. Sam simply lacking the motivation to carry any form of ideal. And especially Armstrong, who believes that everyone should stand up for their beliefs no matter the cost, and control their destinies. Not Sundowner, though. He just wants to wage war for fun, and believes that war is just something natural to humans. He never hides behind it or try to justify why he does evil things. He's pretty much, "Yeah, I wanna start wars because I have a lot of fun killing people and going to war." That, my friends, is how you turn an awful excuse for a human being into a truly compelling villain.
I feel like Sundowner is underated, his design is great, have the six arms to deflect, swords that can turn into a claw, and a mask like Sam and Raiden
I've heard that his name could also represent a syndrome known as ''Sundowner's Syndrome'' , which is most common in Dementia patients . Which basically gives the patient(s) worse symptoms at night , then on daytime . This might represent his battle with Raiden semi-perfectly . Please take this with a grain of salt , just in case .

Can I just say the child brains stuck in little casings with eyeballs is truly one of the most nightmarish things I have ever seen in media? Like holy fuck I'm just having a good time vibing and then THAT happens. I guess it's not so bad when you consider they were all gonna get cool cyborg bodies anyway, right..? *right..?*
war crimes and war: exist sundowner: this. this is my favorite thing. I think about this every day. I lose sleep at night because of me thinking of this.
At 8:24, a lyric references "machines come to transform Eden, day by day." The info on-screen claims that Eden is another name for Earth, but I believe that this line in particular may be in reference to the Garden of Eden, a place of peace originating from the beginning of the Christian Bible, in the book of Genesis. Eden was supposedly taken from mankind after the first sin was committed; in relation to the song's lyrics, I feel that the intended reference is that Sundowner is taking away people's peace by transforming their "Garden of Eden" into a bloody warzone. Just my speculative take on the lyric.
Had to watch immediately. You're one of the main reasons why I played MGR, I just got it 3 weeks ago and it's absolutely spectacular, love almost every aspect of the game.
I can’t help but feel like Sundowner was also somewhat inspired by Judge Holden from Blood Meridian. Both are giant hulking hairless dudes who are obsessed with war
The most honest villain in the series is being used by a guy who wants to use war economy the finally end it. That is why these characters are so great.
love to think at the begging of mgr sam was just like “you wanna go to liberia to kill like 50 people including the senator lol” and sundowner was just like “yeah sure”
8:23 personally I always interpreted the machine as being raiden since he is a cyborg, coming at full speed towards their organization leaving a path behind him of death that pulls the attention of sundowner and the others from the group. And Eden being the desperados group itself, his little murderous paradise where he was indeed, INVINCIBLE.
Be grateful he at least died while being in character unlike what others claimed he wasn't. The dude was pure chaotic evil and always loved war. He died like a true hero. Loving what he liked.
11:17 This scene sent a chill down my spine the first time I played the game, because I have clear memories of the pro-Iraq War crowd using this exact slogan back during the Bush II Years.
Interestingly enough, with themes involving superpowers, we gauge their potential based on how destructive they can be or how well they can undo others.
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but the fact that Sundowner wields a pair of scissors might also reference his line about being in touch with his inner child, since children use scissors.
I've never played this game, nor do I have any plans to, but I do want to know about some of the characters that occasionally pop up in the memes I see and with some of the best boss music I've ever heard. I think this video does a great job at teaching people what a character is like even if they have 0 prior context. So well done.
What's crazy is his theme is actually kind of poetic but is a story about effectively not caring anymore,he knows he's long since lost his mind but accepts it and embraces the violence because in his eyes blood spilt under the sun is beautiful in some strange way
I was watching Wendigoon’s video on Blood Meridian and found that the Judge is kinda similar to sundowner. He’s tall, bald, does weird things with kids and believes that brutal murder and violence are the most pure and moral things a person can do.
"Red Sun" may also be a reference to Blood Meridian; or, The Evening Redness in the West which is a 1985 epic historical novel by American author Cormac McCarthy. The character Sundowner is very similar to the character Judge Holden who is described as a large, hairless, pale, man who has a deep love for war and violence.
“Sundowners syndrome” is also a commonly used term. Many older people experiencing cognitive decline become noticeably worse after the sunset. A person may be pleasant and stable during the day, but with sundowners actually start raving and crying and screaming that same night.
Apologies if somebody has mentioned this already, but another reference to his name and "Red Sun" US Navy Squadron VF-111 are called the "Sundowners", and their aircraft tails have the rising sun painted on them. Wouldn't doubt there's some inspiration for his name and rising sun motifs from there as well.

I managed to kill sundowner literally by only the normal blade because the ERA annoyed me so much. If force is not effective, you're not using enough force.
Use a gun, and if that don’t work?

Mistral- A young yet aimless youth looking for a greater purpose that fulfills her bloody outlook on life…
Monsoon- A wise yet nihilistic zen who believes that all are the way they should be, no matter how hard we try changing it…
Sundowner- A charismatic, openly honest, yet a simple minded man-child who believes that conflict is what helps makes humans “express” themselves to one another…
Sam- A wondering samurai who lost identity and ideals to forces that he couldn’t cut down, and becomes nothing more but a new tool for those sinister forces until someone else completes the fight that he failed to do himself…
Armstrong- A man who wants to create a nation for those who want to fight for what THEY believe in without any rules holding them back, NO MATTER THE COST…

One might say it's FUCKIN INVINCIBLE
Fun fact,
There is another character who wears reactive armour for protection as well.
In metal gear acid 2, Harab Serap, the game's first boss has reactive armour worn around his fatigue trousers so it looks like a skirt. As a result, grenades and other explosions cannot affect him. He can also rocket punch you with his flesh hands and can regenerate new ones.
I really hope you do monsoon soon, his view on nihilism and meme theory would be interesting to annalyse
Also his theme is a fucking banger
Your meme ends here
"How about 'Eat shit and die.' Is that a meme?"
The soundtrack is a banger.
Usually, the first playtrough goes like this:
"Did you learn to parry, you filthy casual?"
"Uuuuuhm no-"
"TOO BAD!!"
*gets clapped by Monsoon*
27 tries later...
"I've finally learnt! You're down to 40.0%!!"
*lyrics start playing*
"Uh oh"
"I have WON this!"
"Shit!!!"
And in Revengeance:
"So, do you still remember how to parry, you filthy casual?"
"Casual?! I've fully S-Ranked Very Hard, I can do this all day."
"Oh... Well, then- It doesn't matter! Your enemy will be the camera!!!"

Also Meti: shows clips of Kukris instead of Machetes.
Now I'm just confused.
I saw that too lol, not trying to rip on the guy, I enjoyed the video, but it was funny.
A kukri is a machete that was from India
Machette is a very long knife/dagger type of melee weapon.
Kukri is an indian machette.

To me his shield things always reminded me of solar panels but red
Which I thought was cool since it fits his name "SUNdowner"
Metal Gear Rising is perhaps one of my favorite games and the boss fights are thought provoking.
Even if you just met them once, you learn so much about their ideologies and morals before the fight begins
Even if it's a spin-off, it still fits inside the story telling of Metal Gear franchise
Yeah, they feel like people than just characters.
He's pretty much, "Yeah, I wanna start wars because I have a lot of fun killing people and going to war."
That, my friends, is how you turn an awful excuse for a human being into a truly compelling villain.
This dude is the most underrated villain in metal gear history i never hear anyone talk about this guy.
"I'm fuckin' invincible!!!"
- 114 pieces of meat and metal atop a skyscraper
I feel like Sundowner is underated, his design is great, have the six arms to deflect, swords that can turn into a claw, and a mask like Sam and Raiden
I've heard that his name could also represent a syndrome known as ''Sundowner's Syndrome'' , which is most common in Dementia patients . Which basically gives the patient(s) worse symptoms at night , then on daytime . This might represent his battle with Raiden semi-perfectly . Please take this with a grain of salt , just in case .
Weirdly enough, i think his vision on human nature is very understandable.
ironic considering he is the most fucked-up wind of destruction.
Huh, werid, I'd like to hear you kinda explain it to me

war crimes and war: exist
sundowner: this. this is my favorite thing.
Both are giant hulking hairless dudes who are obsessed with war
sundowner is one of my favorite characters, he is honest about his intentions and his theme is amazing!
The most honest villain in the series is being used by a guy who wants to use war economy the finally end it. That is why these characters are so great.
IT'S NOT AN HATE CRIME IF I LOVED DOIN' EVERY PART OF IT, JACK !!!
Another thing that highlights Sundowner's savagery, machetes are also heavily associated with the Rwandan genocide.

Red Sun over paradise is still one of the best songs ever made for a video game.
love to think at the begging of mgr sam was just like “you wanna go to liberia to kill like 50 people including the senator lol” and sundowner was just like “yeah sure”
"Alright, bet. Whoever kills more receive a raise."
He sacrificed himself to delay Raiden
Other villains: "I kill because of my past"
Sundowner: *"pls die"*
11:17 This scene sent a chill down my spine the first time I played the game, because I have clear memories of the pro-Iraq War crowd using this exact slogan back during the Bush II Years.
"he was born in Alabama"
May explain as to why he's insane

Sundowner was voiced by Crispin Freeman?
Imagine Sundowner and Alucard having a debate on human nature, in the middle of battle of course
I know i'm a little late but t's also important to note that his boss music is an absolute gift from god
Interestingly enough, with themes involving superpowers, we gauge their potential based on how destructive they can be or how well they can undo others.
As a sundowner enjoyer,I can confirm he is fucking invincible
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but the fact that Sundowner wields a pair of scissors might also reference his line about being in touch with his inner child, since children use scissors.
I've never played this game, nor do I have any plans to, but I do want to know about some of the characters that occasionally pop up in the memes I see and with some of the best boss music I've ever heard. I think this video does a great job at teaching people what a character is like even if they have 0 prior context. So well done.

I genuinely love the friendship between Sundowner and Sam, wish we got to see more of the two
11:58 actually, he didn't want a 9-11 2.0, he wanted another 9-12, notice the "Like he good old days *after* 9-11!"
What's crazy is his theme is actually kind of poetic but is a story about effectively not caring anymore,he knows he's long since lost his mind but accepts it and embraces the violence because in his eyes blood spilt under the sun is beautiful in some strange way

8 years has passed but meti doesn't care and still make videos about rising, beautiful
This man had such legendary lines. "Children are cruel, and I love minors"
Deserves a better boss fight if they do a remake.
I was watching Wendigoon’s video on Blood Meridian and found that the Judge is kinda similar to sundowner. He’s tall, bald, does weird things with kids and believes that brutal murder and violence are the most pure and moral things a person can do.
8:36 I thought it was "Violence Breeds within ourselves"
The only thing I know for real is that Red Sun is a fucking banger.
I am still baffled that meti still is advertising shimoneta to this day
"Red Sun" may also be a reference to Blood Meridian; or, The Evening Redness in the West which is a 1985 epic historical novel by American author Cormac McCarthy. The character Sundowner is very similar to the character Judge Holden who is described as a large, hairless, pale, man who has a deep love for war and violence.
Sundowner fully embodies the hopes and dreams of Cold Steel videos
14:27 “THATS HIS VOICE ACTOR?!”
his mask is actually a reference to "mempo" a protective mask samurai used to intimidate their enemies.
Thereneeds to be a whole analysis on the winds of distrucsion and raiden.
I feel like his name would be, "The Lightning Tempest"
Mr. Lightning Bolt
The nimbus
“Sundowners syndrome” is also a commonly used term. Many older people experiencing cognitive decline become noticeably worse after the sunset. A person may be pleasant and stable during the day, but with sundowners actually start raving and crying and screaming that same night.
Apologies if somebody has mentioned this already, but another reference to his name and "Red Sun"
US Navy Squadron VF-111 are called the "Sundowners", and their aircraft tails have the rising sun painted on them. Wouldn't doubt there's some inspiration for his name and rising sun motifs from there as well.
