Honestly, who wouldn’t come it of that fucked in the head? Babies beaten to death against trees, hundreds lined up and killed with farm tools, and worse. The casual brutality of it all is enough to rationalize omnicide.
I feel that it's ironic that the only time Monsoon truly regains his humanity is when he is absolutely terrified of someone who has just embraced his true self
Monsoon witnessed horrors in cambodia and is implied to choose the safest path if he can. His entire philosophy is built on justifying what he's done and seen. Though he is **very successfull** in wearing the mask of psychopathy, you see how he feels about things occasionally in his reactions and such. When you start paying attention everything monsoon says is not about memes or being along "nature's course". It's because he's piss scared of meeting the fate he's seen and has personally forced upon others.
@@createrz8433 He says that when you struggle to off him and it's an actual fight you win in the end. His pain tolerance given to him by becoming more machine than man allow him to keep his mask on. This is why he sections his body to avoid harm. You can see this makes sense.
I think Monsoon's facade of being all big talk and "nature running it's course" breaking as he pleads for his life is really interesting and deep for his character. Sure, he may wear a shit-eating grin and laugh manically as he stabs away at his foes, but I feel deep down that Monsoon is someone who is incredibly fearful. In times of genocide and war, he went to the Mafia for protection, same could be said for Desperado. In the lyrics for "The Stains of Time", the one line "Into a peaceful life" always stuck with me a bit. Perhaps it's that Monsoon wishes he wouldn't have to gain power in organizations for his own safety. He knows it's what he must do to survive, but not something he wants. Perhaps when he was more naïve he thought there would be a day when things would get better for him, when war, bloodshed, the rules of nature would no longer torture him. Yet, as he had learned with his age; his dreams, have disappeared.
It is most likely a facade. The horrible things he witnessed and the crimes he committed as a result of that initial trauma must have broken him in a fundamental way. The grinning apex predator is a result of his fear of ever being at the mercy of someone else again, someone without any mercy or regard for life. If he's pressed once again into a situation that threatens him, that facade may shatter. Really most actors in Metal Gear just need therapy but chose violence instead.
Want to add, that even his body language can tell about the facade thing. When Raiden stands up Monsoon takes a step back (and I remember him doing the same action a couple of times in a potentially dangerous situations)
im a big fan of how genuinely terrified of raiden monsoon is. like he gives this whole speech intending to demoralize him and then raiden just goes "you know what? yeah" and suddenly becomes stronger than he has ever been before and you can see in real time monsoon shit his pants as this happens

If there was one other character I wish we could play as in a DLC campaign, it would definitely have to be Monsoon. It's easy to gloss over during his boss fight, but he is an extremely sad character, I would have loved to see more of his backstory, also he would be so damn fun to play as, imagine how cool his move set would be. Khamsin is another character I wish we got to play as, but Monsoon is way higher up on the list
Let’s be happy this game actually gave us dlc for two extra characters. Too many games skip out on this and it’s so frustrating because of the great addition to the game it could be
Monsoon's speech about "meme" really resonates within me, it felt like he awakens something inside me that I don't even know I have He literally gave me his meme
It's kinda cool, that almost every character who does the whole "strong prey on the weak" thing, ultimately begs for mercy or says that its wrong, only when they are now the weak. Except monsoon, he can fully accept it, and even when he panics, he ultimately resigns himself to it still.
The tragedy of Monsoon is that he was born and grew up in a part of the world where the “STRONG” literally ate the “WEAK” as a three course meal. Explaining his nihilistic view on life.
Honestly kinda surprised there wasn’t a cut to a 4-5 second clip of DSP during the “Monsoon’s fight is a skill check to be sure you know how to block and don’t button mash” segment
Monsoon as a person is very deep, and it's kind of alarming to see someone just, following the "memes" blindly, never stopping to question who they are or if what they are doing is good or not. Really, I feel like most of the villains in this game could have gotten over their trauma or their "memes" and became better people if they tried hard enough. tl:dr: I think that the antagonists could have lived longer and meaningful lives has they followed a different path. From what I remember. Sai actually weren’t specifically ninja weapons They were actually peace keeping weapons, due to the hand held trident shape, that easily caught and disarmed/damaged most blades weapons Personally this actually enforces themes even harder than the ninja aesthetic. Monsoon is the oldest winds of destruction member. Him having the only weapon that conventionally isn’t bladed and only pointed, compared to literally everyone else having a bladed weapon of some kind shows how different his ideals are Mistral is incredibly controlled, and accepts her reason to fight and kill is for Armstrong Her weapon is a staff that holds 2 daggers at each end. She has complete control of it Sun downer revels in his raw love for war and killing. His weapon is a giant scissor blade and 2 large nearly greatsword machetes Sam is lost on his way. He doesn’t know why he kills anymore until he finds a rival in raiden. His weapon is very similar to raidens, being a similar 2 handed katana. Monsoon? He doesn’t give a fuck. He doesn’t care and thinks “might makes right” and fights to survive. Sais being a primarily defensive weapon while still being able to be deadly and 1 handed pushes the “fight to survive” nihilistic mentality of monsoon It pushes monsoons weapon choice into just being a cool part of an admittedly less represented weapon in media. To an actual insight of his character and his role amongst WOD Edit: someone also pointed out. Armstongs main weapon. Being his nanomachines in his heart. They’re also primarily defensive, while Armstrong doesn’t use them for raw defense. In fact he uses them mostly for offense. Which even FURTHER connects him to monsoon cause of their weapons share a philosophy and use case. Which makes sense cause monsoon is basic the right hand man to Armstrong
Don't forget Armstrong, using a defensive weapon of nanomachines while also utilising them for offence which could show some duality in his character as both the final boss and yet a character Raiden can relate to as shown in his theme It Has To Be This Way and it's lyrics.
Mansoon is one of my favorites in the metal gear universe he has a very strong philosophy of how the world operates his definition of a meme is so true and still holds up even to this day this game was so ahead of it's time
Honestly he's the most annoying boss fight in the whole game to me, if only because you really need your blocking perfected in his fight. That being said "Stains of Time" will always be an amazing song!
Parrying is way easier with mouse and keyboard and switching between is seamless so I just do that, gamepad for blade mode and mouse and keyboard for rest of gameplay during parry heavy bosses.
so i wanted to make a presentation for one of my classes and my teacher liked the idea of memes but seen from a more philosofical perspective, i cant belive i actually used this video as a source of information... thanks i guess
This may have been the only time i've seen some mention about the final lines a boss says at the end of a fight. I've always thought it was interesting that bosses had varying lines and wondered if they correlated to how you fought them. Monsoon in particular had the 3 different lines shown in the video, but I remember even Bladewolf screaming for mercy at the last second in some instances of his boss fight. Idk, i really liked the thought that the bosses would react so drastically to Raiden if the fight was done perfectly as if they were horrified of the monster they unknowingly unleashed to the world.
i mastered the parry system fairly early when i played and found monsoon to be joke. i was also playing on hard. barely used any items. my friends who were watching me play at the time called me a parry god, as they struggled at the fight. i thought they were simply being stupid. apparently monsoon really was hard for many people! sundowner remained the hardest for me. he was a brutal rise in difficulty. so my biggest takeaway gameplay wise in this video is... YOU CAN USE THE SAI'S TO RENDER HIS FIRST PHASE A COMPLETE JOKE?!
Yeah I felt the exact same way. Monsoon was easy as hell to parry and the game showers you with emp grenades. Sundowner I couldn't figure out how to not get messed up by his shields. Kept getting blown up.
I think you’re the only human to have trouble with Sundowner. You can literally kill him easily without even cutting his shields once. He has less health than a dwarf gekko and it makes me angry that most people beat him on their first try without cutting the shields
@@JTBJacksdeadasschannel i wanted to destroy the shields and get to the second phase because RED SUN OVER PARADISE but I suck at precision cutting. I've only been mashing X and Y when in blade mode up until that point.
First time I beat him I got him to cry out, and thought: "what a coward, starting a fight then crying for forgiveness when you lose" Now I get why he did it as his sole purpose was to survive
Yessss the long awaited Monsoon video! Honestly I wasn't all for him at first but I just loved his theme and he just kinda became my fav character of mgrr
Hearing that him yelling stop was something you earn through beating him skillfully. was nice to know. i was barely able to push through the game. hell i almost restarted to going easy mode during the bladewolf fight. but when my last try i won. i set out to beat the game without restarts. and him. really made me ground myself and master the controls. i never used a single item. i parried every attack then struck. that’s how i defeated monsoon
I'm currently on my fourth playthrough of Metal Gear Rising, and just a few minutes ago, I faced Monsoon again. Up until now, he was my most hated boss in the game, but that was before I knew how to actually fight him. I just kept spamming EM Grenades and going apeshit whenever he was able to be attacked, and I took most of his rush attack and using nanopaste to beat him in a test of endurance. But once I learned how to fight him (how to parry, what to parry, how to wear down his invincible mode), I'll be damned if he wasn't one of my favourite bosses so far, and it was the first time I beat him without EM Grenades, and made him say "Stop it." instead of "Have it your way." You better watch yourself Sundowner, because Jack is back, and he's right on your doorstep.
I like the theory that Stains of Time is also a theme for Raiden coming to the realization that deep down he is and always will be Jack the Ripper, as opposed to being just Monsoon's theme
Another thing I think is pretty cool about “Stains of Time” is how if you listen closely to the backup vocals during the chorus, it sounds an awful lot like Raiden. And since all the singers are meant to sound like the voice actors, it’s interesting when you think about how much of Monsoon’s theme, or any of the boss’ themes in general, could connect with Raiden as well. Of course it’s not 1:1, but there’s definite similarities.
Everytime i see him i'm reminded of how i had to beat him with exactly 0 blocking, and i did the same until Sam's bossfight where i learned to do it right. Amazing video as usual Meti, cheers from Brazil :>
I did the exact same thing on my first playthrough, I never learned how to parry so I just used Mistral’s pole arm as a crutch until I fought Sam, learned how to parry from then on lmao, I’m surprised I even beat monsoon
Is it just me, or do the Japanese got some pretty badass farming tools? Sai, Kunai, Kama sickles. I understand they were probably adapted over time to look more like weapons, but still, they have no business making farming tools look that cool
my first time playing mgrr It took me over 4 hours to beat monsoon as I had not discovered that you can use those healing packs, so I had to beat monsoon all on one life
The real question is who owns the Japanese garden Monsoon or Sundowner, Monsoon has the DLC scene and the ninja vibe while Sundowner has the samurai armor thing, which makes me wonder who the member of world marshall is actually responsible for the creation of the garden... Oh and definitely ain't sam, cause despite being the most samurai-looking dude and saying in the DLC he would enjoy the fight the garden saying is ''classic'' the garden was already there when he arrived, also cause he just became a member of the winds so I don't think he has the money to make a giant garden inside a building in like 2 years of work lol
Based on my crude experience with the Metal Gear franchise, only played MGR:R and MGS (In that order), I feel like a lot of Metal Gear characters turn to nihilistic perspectives on life in order to cope with the trauma they've suffered. Part of me pities them. Another part despises them.
It's genuinely thought provoking how the cultural influence, propaganda, and mutablity definition of Memes actually works perfectly in line with the current, popular definition and use of the word.
I've been waiting for this video for a long time, there really aren't many people who've actually discussed Monsoon's character in detail (probably due to his use of memes) so this was a great video!
Honestly when DeModcracy put Monsoon as second from the bottom in his boss ranking, only beating out MG EXCELSUS (which honestly… yeah) that was the dead giveaway that he didn’t get it. Monsoon’s pre battle speech and fight is probably the most memorable 20 minutes of the game except for maybe the banter with Armstrong. The fight itself is probably one of the most original and inventive use of a human boss enemy I’ve ever seen in a long time.
The Monsoon boss fight was where I finally learned to parry, although I didn’t learn perfect parrying until the Jetstream Sam DLC. Yeah I somehow got past Blade Wolf without learning how to parry, I probably just evaded his attacks and unintentionally exploited the shit out of repair nanopaste.
Monsoon, Blade Wolf and Jetstream Sam were the biggest lessons for me when playing for the first time. Blade Wolf taught me to watch the enemy and their minions closely, Monsoon taught me to be careful about how I attack, and Sam taught me a lesson I should have known since the beginning: How to block/parry. Naturally, all of these led up to a long but incredibly fun final boss in Armstrong, but I think that's a given for anyone who's played MGR. Unfortunately, replaying the game these guys are insanely easy in comparison now that I know how to tackle them, but I will always love them for there awesome music (blade wolf and monsoon especially) and incredible boss battles.
That dreams of an absolution playing in the beginning of the video brought back some nice memories, ignoring that for a sec though amazing video as always
TBH I expected that when a Monsoon video came out it would be called “The Melancholy of Monsoon” because of his nihilistic views and constant cackling. This title is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
I have been waiting for this. After playing mgr i instantly wanted to know more of the characters and found your videos of the four winds of destruction and i love them.
John Kassir was also the original voice for Deadpool, but while Monsoon mocks others for having causes and doing whatever it takes to stay powerful, Deadpool wants to believe in a cause since he wants to be a hero and be loved. But he also wants to keep being himself and those things conflict, however, every now and then he makes some progress.
FINALLY! I was trying to look for a vid on Monsoon frim you and realised there was none, and now at last - the man, the myth, the *MEME* is covered! *NOW THERE'S A PRETTY VID! EXQUISITE!*
Everyone keeps saying Monsoon is a *nihilist* but I think that's completely wrong. Nihilism means you believe there is no meaning, no purpose at all in life. However Monsoon clearly believes in 'greater purposes', whether passing on memes, or living by his "kill or be killed" ideology. He has learned to co-exist with the pain that haunts him, but at the cost of becoming a killer who preys upon the weak. But he's not a *mindless* killer; he seems to reflect on his own beliefs and ponders life's questions in a way similar to a philosopher. So no, Monsoon is *not* a nihilist. I would instead call him a deterministic Stoic: he rejects the idea of free will, and seems to have detached himself from feeling anything. The Stoics believed that attachment to things in the world will only cause grief when those things are taken away, so the best way to cope in life is to not get attached to anything. I think 2 quotes reflect this: "Nature is not beautiful or ugly" (he feels neutral towards the world) and "Now I return to the Earth..." (to me this feels almost biblical, the idea 'from dust you were made and to dust you will return.' He doesn't cling to life, but lets nature take his course). He died by the same rule he lived by: kill or be killed. Perhaps he believed his purpose in life was to test the strength of others while increasing his own power, in order to further prove the strength of whoever he would eventually be defeated by.
And it will come like a flood of pain Pouring down on me And it will not let up until the end is here And it will come through the darkest day In my final hour And it will never rest until the clouds are clear Until it finds my dreams have disappeared My dreams disappear
Imagine MGR exam I just rushed through 3 of these videos, and i'm in awe. I recall myself being surprised a lot about how many details are put into this game, without ever digging deeper until now, this is just spectacular amount of work and effort, not a lie, i have never seen anything like this, it's just, wow

Some other scenes I forgot where they were further confirm this and indicate monsoon's philosophy is infact hypocritical, and if he could what he truly wishes is for nothing and no one to hurt him again like in cambodia. This is why he sections his body to avoid harm. You can see this makes sense.

I've got this investigation here that says...:
(glasses lower to look at monsoon)
Says you're a pussy
Everyone monsoon until your own memes strike back at you
"Kill or be killed jack"
"You're right, im killing you then"
"W a i t n o ."
Want to add, that even his body language can tell about the facade thing. When Raiden stands up Monsoon takes a step back (and I remember him doing the same action a couple of times in a potentially dangerous situations)

Monsoon: weather pattern in Asia-Australia
Sundowner: hot wind in southern California
*Jestream* Sam: pretty self explanatory
Khamsin: weather in the middle east that brings sandstorms
needless to say I feel like a moron for not realising this sooner

From what I remember. Sai actually weren’t specifically ninja weapons
They were actually peace keeping weapons, due to the hand held trident shape, that easily caught and disarmed/damaged most blades weapons
Personally this actually enforces themes even harder than the ninja aesthetic.
Monsoon is the oldest winds of destruction member. Him having the only weapon that conventionally isn’t bladed and only pointed, compared to literally everyone else having a bladed weapon of some kind shows how different his ideals are
Mistral is incredibly controlled, and accepts her reason to fight and kill is for Armstrong
Her weapon is a staff that holds 2 daggers at each end. She has complete control of it
Sun downer revels in his raw love for war and killing. His weapon is a giant scissor blade and 2 large nearly greatsword machetes
Sam is lost on his way. He doesn’t know why he kills anymore until he finds a rival in raiden. His weapon is very similar to raidens, being a similar 2 handed katana.
Monsoon? He doesn’t give a fuck. He doesn’t care and thinks “might makes right” and fights to survive. Sais being a primarily defensive weapon while still being able to be deadly and 1 handed pushes the “fight to survive” nihilistic mentality of monsoon
It pushes monsoons weapon choice into just being a cool part of an admittedly less represented weapon in media. To an actual insight of his character and his role amongst WOD
Edit: someone also pointed out.
I love him as a character because he is either deep and complex, or the funny meme guy, depending on what mood I'm in
Gotta say the exhance before Raiden finally kills him is kinda neat.
"You're dead!"

That being said "Stains of Time" will always be an amazing song!
monsoon has been the ender of many no hit runs for me
His boss fight boils down to the question "Can you parry?"
I think you mean the best tutorial boss
I got through Monsoon barely able to parry. Sam was the "hope you know how to parry 100% of the time" boss for me.
Parrying is way easier with mouse and keyboard and switching between is seamless so I just do that, gamepad for blade mode and mouse and keyboard for rest of gameplay during parry heavy bosses.
I failed a physics exam about magnetic force because i was being Absolutely destroyed by monsoon instead of studying.
Isnt that a pretty meme?

Monsoon was hard for me the first time but he is definitely a fun one to fight
Yeah I felt the exact same way. Monsoon was easy as hell to parry and the game showers you with emp grenades. Sundowner I couldn't figure out how to not get messed up by his shields. Kept getting blown up.
I think you’re the only human to have trouble with Sundowner. You can literally kill him easily without even cutting his shields once. He has less health than a dwarf gekko and it makes me angry that most people beat him on their first try without cutting the shields

But once I learned how to fight him (how to parry, what to parry, how to wear down his invincible mode), I'll be damned if he wasn't one of my favourite bosses so far, and it was the first time I beat him without EM Grenades, and made him say "Stop it." instead of "Have it your way."
You better watch yourself Sundowner, because Jack is back, and he's right on your doorstep.
I never knew that Monsoon's final words changed depending on what and how you did during the fight, I thought it was just random. Interesting.
I think under his smile and bravado he hides the fact that he is most angry and hateful among winds of destruction.

Nice trivia of Monsoon. So Khamsin and Armstrong are left to have their trivia. One for Desperado and one for the final boss, NANO MACHINES SON!

The fight itself is probably one of the most original and inventive use of a human boss enemy I’ve ever seen in a long time.
his viser just prevents his hair to make it wet in the rain
monsoon of the sussy imposters
This video taught me that you could parry the giant wheel very educational 10/10
great video, very excited for the armstrong breakdown! (also the raiden one will be interesting if you decide to do it)
The Monsoon boss fight was where I finally learned to parry, although I didn’t learn perfect parrying until the Jetstream Sam DLC.

And it will come like a flood of pain
Pouring down on me
And it will not let up until the end is here
