Fun Story: One time I walked into a knife shop and was just looking around. A man behind the counter noticed me browsing the glass display cases and very helpfully approached.
"Is that a Cold Steel AD-15 in your pocket?"he asked, nodding to the AD-15 indeed clipped in my pocket. I turned and responded, "No, I'm just very happy to see you." He rolled his eyes and turned back around, walking away. However, an older man behind the counter erupted into laughter and the two of us spent a very enjoyable quarter hour looking at and talking about knives😂
Long story short, I like the new segment name!

I used to conceal carry a colonel blades low vz. I don't think they're still being produced, but it was a pretty cool knife. You could carry it appendix style because it had a pistol grip style handle so there was no way anyone would know that you had a fixed blade on you.
I stopped carrying it, because you can produce a folder just as fast, and it doesn't draw weird stares as much when used for regular tasks in public. It still has a place on my backpack behind my ifak though. Love that knife.

For Tom’s question about a concealable fixed blade, please look at the Cold Steel Mini Tac Bowie. At less than $19, the 8Cr blade is stainless and thinner than the BK11, yet both slicier and stabbier than either the Sea Horse or the BK11. It’s plenty tough for whatever you might put a neck knife through and the sheath is streamlined for minimal printing through a shirt. It has lots of belly for food prep and for most chores. I wear mine every day and touch it up with a steel or strop. Ergos are great!

    Hello DCA,
Hooe you're having a wonderful day!
I have several gil hibben knives that I use regularly. They're different hibben designed throwing knives. He does create a lot of fantasy / movie based knives.
But the throwing knives are very functional. I've used them on a regular basis, some of the best out there and at a great price point too.

  • @joeclark7082
    @joeclark7082 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As far as Gill Hibben, I had one of his throwing knives and it performed wonderfully. It didn't take long for me to become pretty good with it. Unfortunately, thanks to my wonderful kiddos, the knife is now submerged in the dirt somewhere in the 20 acres behind the house.

I bought the "le duck" a whole ago and while I'm usually not crazy about outdoor edge's knives, that one makes an awesome fixed edc.

Hi David. My regular EDC for the past 15+ years was the CRKT Point Guard designed by Crawford. It's been an excellent small job workhorse for me, although it did need to be sharpened often to keep its edge. One of my favorite aspects of the knife was the LAWKS locking system. I'm in need of a new EDC now, and I'm looking for an upgrade that has a proven locking system. I'd like to find a solid flipper folder with a modified Wharncliffe or sheepsfoot blade - or perhaps a nessmuk - in the $150-$200 range. Thanks for any suggestions you may have, and keep up the great video content.

Regarding Gil Hibben designs, for $39, I had to purchase 2 of the Rambo IV "leaf spring" machetes for first & second kind of cool as Nutnfancy calls it. I reprofiled the edge on the one I carry in the truck & it cuts as well as it batons when making kindling for the Pit fires that I have with My Grandchildren!!!

    Hi David (and Seth),
My first question was answered brilliantly, so here I go again! Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question:
I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features:
    1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard")
    2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong)
    3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it...
    4) About 3" or more Blade Length
    5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly.
    6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip
    7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each.
    Thanks so much!

knife question for DCA- when I go on trail runs I carry a folder and it often gets covered in sweat (or soaked with rain). What’s the best way to deal with that? Should I rinse it and then oil it? Just oil it? Do I need to disassemble and let it dry every time? Thanks.

    • @natek1993

OTF knives are forsure the most fidgety

    • @garrettferrell6821
      @garrettferrell6821 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with Nate, nothing beats an OTF for fidget factor..side folding autos are pretty fun as well but not as much as the double action OTF...as for non-automatic knives the SOG Terminus XR is a lot of fun because it has 3 opening methods.you can open it with the flipper tab,the thumb stud or you can pull back the XR lock and wrist flick it.the XR lock is SOG’s version of the Benchmade AXIS lock so it also closes smoothly.mentioning the Benchmade AXIS lock it pretty much goes without saying, most of their knives are great fidget knives..I’ve always enjoyed the fidget ability of the Spyderco PM2,PM3,Shaman,etc..basically,if it has the compression lock and the Spydie hole,it’s gonna be fun to play with..can’t forget the push button locks either like the Pro-Tech Malibu or the newer versions of the Civivi Elementum w/push button lock

I had a Snap Lock as my EDC quite a while back. Unfortunately, the knife is more fragile than it looks. I dropped it on the ground and the pins that work as a hinge both broke on impact! That was the second CRKT that I broke simply by accidentally dropping it (while closed) on the ground.

Question. Hey, DCA, I'm wondering what the best compound is to use on a leather strop. I find the white, green, and black polishing compounds difficult and a bit messy to use, and I wondered about trying a spay-on diamond emulsion. • @jonNH123

Hey DCA: I've been admiring the recent work from Work Tuff gear. That said, I'm still a little mystified with their preferred steel of SK85 which I have never heard of before and can't seem to find a lot about on the intranet. Could you assist by breaking it down for us in terms of it's attributes: for instance is it carbon steel, stainless, or tool steel? Also how is it's wear resistance, toughness, corrosion resistance, etc. Finally can you compare it to another well known steel that would have comparable attributes so I can get a general sense of how it performs?
    Many thanks!

    • @garrettferrell6821
      @garrettferrell6821 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

SK85 is a carbon steel and from my understanding it is very comparable SK5 which is most comparable to 1080 carbon steel.in other words,it should be slightly tougher than 1095 and 1095 should have slightly better edge retention but doubtfully enough to really be able to see a difference.in other words,if you own any knives in 1095 I would expect similar performance.the only knives I have in SK5 is a Cold Steel Recon Tanto and a Cold Steel SRK which are both pretty great especially for the low $40-$50 price point.I really can’t see much of a difference between SK5 and my knives in 1095.the SK5 SRK isn’t as good as other models of the SRK because the tip is a bit thinner which makes for a weaker more likely to snap off tip.that isn’t due to the quality of SK5 steel but more so Cold Steel cutting corners to sell it at a lower price.this is a little disappointing considering their old discontinued Carbon V and AUS8 SRKs didn’t have this problem and were more in line with the higher end San Mai and CPM-3V SRK...with all that being said,I’ve heard nothing but great things about Work Tuff Gear knives.if you see a particular WTG knife that you really want,I would order it soon because after they sale out you may not see that particular model ever again.they used to sale their knives on Amazon and it seems like they do a run of each knife and when they sale out they are pretty much gone for good and when they make more knives they are only focused on making newer models of knives.at least that was the case a couple years ago, maybe now they are going the route of most knife manufacturers where they will make and sale the same models of knives for a few years before they are discontinued

Hey DCA & Seth! I was just watching this video talking about concealed fixed blades, great options you gave, but currently I'm trying to find a carry fixed blade for my picky BIL. He wants something pretty specific. A utilitarian knife for everyday tasks, but that he can carry concealed for self-defense purposes, horizontally in small-of-back (so probably something Tek-Lok-able?) Thing is... He's set on a tanto. I'd tried to lead him away from that, or at least open him up to the idea of a non-tanto blade, but he's determined. He wants something in the 4-ish" range, and under $100 would be best, if possible. Thanks in advance, guys!!

I EDC a double detent knife and I've never had an issue with it folding and cutting myself, but, I have let other use it and they've knicked themselves with it. I think it's a case of "if you know, you know, if you don't...."

Hi DCA! I was looking for a rock solid knife with a good steel, a good lock sistem, thumb hole to flick it open with my middle finger, running on washers, with a for way reversable pocket clip and a blade shape capable to do some piercing. I obviously landed to the paramilitary 2 but i really don't like how it looks... can you suggest any alternative? You obviously don't need to be that specific😅

The Hellfyre Double Shadow ( or one very similar by Hibben) was actually featured in the movie Star Trek : Nemesis. Carried by the villain Shinzon. Not the best Star Trek movie but featured some cool Gil Hibben knives. He also designed some Klingon knives too.

Hey DCA, about the Gill Hibben question:
As a gift, a few years ago, I recieved a Hibben design that is now part of my EDC.
The model name is Sidewinder. It's a 3.5 inch, full tang, 7Cr17 blade, with a shockingly comfortable grip.
I believe the scales are walnut, with an interesting liner, a couple of mosaic pins, lanyard hole, and brass bolsters.
It came with a leather, drop-in, sheath which is not quite as secure as I'd prefer, but will work while I'm in que for a custom one from my friend.
For the price M'lady paid, I'd say she picked up a real winner for me!
    Hope this helps ... 😜

Question: I recently handled a cold steel CODE 4, tanto. I was so impressed I popped on the site to check out options. Tanto isn’t my groove I’d love to see the spear and clip point versions. I am a lefty and they seem fully ambi. Am I missing something? They seem like excellent value at the price you guys are selling them for.

One knife that would fit the bill as unique, but it is no longer in production: the Kershaw E.T. (External Toggle). I purchased one at a Gun/Knife Show and the guy sold it to me for $20 because he couldn't sell them very easily because nobody could figure out the technique to open it. He said that if I could figure it out, he'd sell it to me cheap. Two attempts was all it took.

Hey DCA! I am looking for a big tactical blade. Cannot be a dagger that is sharp on both sides, otherwise no limits. I like the Cold Steel Chaos Kukri, but it is a little heavy. I love the Cold Steel Spartan and and Espada XL, but they are folders. Anything in between maybe?

In discussing the Becker BK11 as a good neck knife, you mentioned stripping the black coating from the blade to improve its ability in slicing. I have been wanting a general use neck knife, and have wondered about the "food safety" aspect of the black coating on these knives. Because of this, I have only used non-coated knives for food prep. But I would really like to know if there is any evidence of any safety concerns when slicing foods, especially acidic fruits with a coated blade? And, if I were to buy the BK11, how would I go about removing the coating without damaging the blade?

Hey Guys, first of all Thanks for all your content!
I have a question for you. i am searching for a small fixed blade for camping and strolling trough the woods. i am looking for a blade, good for carving and food prepping with an non rusting bladesteel which i can also carry on my neck. as reference, i like to mention the esee camp lore cr 2.5 which would be my pick, if it were a non rusting steel.
    Cheers Phil

Question for DCA: My wife needs a large, sturdy knife for opening durians (a big, spiky fruit we have here in Thailand). She needs to puncture, pry, chop and slice. I gave her the knife I carry on my motorbike tours: a Ka-bar MK-1 USN with the black Krayton grip. She said the blade (5-1/4") wasn't quite long enough for the job. I also noticed that the edge had lots of very tiny chips, and needed a good re-sharpening. So I'm thinking that she needs something with an approx. 6-inch blade, maybe a slightly thicker blade (> 0.165"), and a harder steel. Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a Buck 124 Frontiersman, but how does 420HC compare to 1095CV? Or is there a better option? Thanks!

Hey DCA/ Seth- if you had to choose a Big & Small EDC combo (one fifth pocket size knife and one 4 inch or over big boy) for a combined total of $150 or less- what would your perfect "little & large" pairing be and why?

I am starting a new job where I'll be in maintenance. I was wondering what would be a good hard use knife for that. I have large hands, and like smaller fixed blades (the USMC Kabar is too big, but something like the LT Wright Next Gen looks about perfect for the handle, but I like a 3.5-4" blade). But for this job I'd like a folder that mimics that feel of that nice full handle, has a 3.5-4" strong drop or clip point blade, uses a strong lock like an axis, and has a super steel that would hold up to some abuse (light prying tasks like cutting zipties, manipulating wires, etc). I really like the sound of Magnacut steel, but it is only available in either the Hogue Deka or that Lionsteel hawkbill blade, and neither design seem very tough. Budget would be up to $200, but having a premium steel that can take and hold an edge while standing some abuse is top on the list.
Thanks. I love the videos, keep up the great work!

    Question for y’all:
I work in fine dinning and have noticed a growing trend amongst the chefs. All the chefs have their own knifes, most have a whole roll with several really nice knives. Which is normal. But in recent weeks everyone seems to be going out and buying an edc 2.5-3 inch fixed blade with a three finger grip, which has a thin blade stock and super slicey grinds. That way if your moving around from kitchen to kitchen you always have a usable little knife with you. What would be a good recommendation for this purpose?
