From what I heard it was more from a place of him being genuinely angry with how they were writing him in season 4, he hated how bad they made Pierce and dropped an N bomb when angrily ranting at the writers
@@mrcritical6751 Chevy Chase has always been a huge douche from what I've read, and then you have Dan Harmon who's also a huge douche who started to write Chevy's character in more of an antagonistic manner because of Chevy's behavior. Like, Chevy acted superior to everyone, didn't like working the hours, that's why you can see him do less and less groupscenes in the future, he wasn't there. He'd basically say "I've worked enough today" and leave, or he'd say something about not working too long early on and they'd record his things separately from everyone else so he could leave. Then when Dan was fired and wasn't a part of season 4, the writing fell off and I don't think they knew how to write Pierce, and it seems like Chevy had great respect for Dan, he joined because he loved the script for the pilot. He didn't like the way the character was going and reacted in some sort of way like "What's Pierce gonna do next, say the N-word?" and I don't know the exact details of him leaving after that but yeah. His best scenes IMO is when he acted as like a father figure or a mentor to someone, Troy, Jeff, Shirley, but then as the show went on it just became "Look at the funny old man who says racist and sexist things fall off a boat".

While Berle crashed and burned on Saturday Night, at around the same time, he was on the Muppet Show, which was very much like vaudeville, and he not only fit well in the show, he had one of the most unforgettable performances on a series notable for great performances. I think part of the success was that he had to follow the script exactly, and it was written without his influence other than they knew his limits and strengths.

Weird, I was just commenting on this in another YT analysis video. Basically there are a couple types of good hosts, and 3 very specific categories of bad hosts: 1. Non-comedians who obviously don't know how to be funny in general but especially on SNL because it has a very particular kind of humor. This includes action stars and athletes or just people who take themselves too seriously. AKA Steven Seagal. It does not include wrestlers because those people ARE comedians with a very specific skill set. The Hulk Hogan/Mr. T. episode was great because those guys don't take themselves seriously at all. Similarly Jesse Jackson actually hosted one episode just to prove he wasn't as angry and uptight as the media made him out to be and his episode surprisingly was funny. 2. Comedians who have a completely different comedy style and were never in touch with SNL to begin with. This includes older established guys who already made themselves famous with their style of humor and didn't get SNL or want to adapt to fit in. That's where guys like Milton Berle and Walter Matthau come in. It can also include comedians who are a little far out there in the weird zone and even SNL couldn't understand them. I know Jim Carry auditioned repeatedly and was turned down cuz he's a little too off the wall and didn't work with SNL when they were slowly becoming less edgy and wild. That's how he ended up on In Living Color. But years later when he was famous and also a little more under control they asked him to host and he did and he was great. 3. Comedians who DO understand SNL but for some reason don't mesh well with that years cast or crew. Chevy Chase is a prime example of that. He's the guy who STARTED saturday night live! He was there in season 1 and probably the most focused and disciplined and also the best comedian of the original crew. But every time he came back there were new writers and actors and the show was just a little different and he fit in less and less as the years went on. Since there’s was a section about banned hosts, I want to bring up banned musical guests. In particular, the Replacements. (I am a huge fan of the Replacements aka the ‘Mats.) They were drunk and sloppy as hell and angered Lorne so much he banned them. Years later, the lead singer of the Replacements, Paul Westerberg, appeared again, but solo, as a musical guest. Because Lorne didn’t realize who he was.
chevy chase is a big baby. he needs to be the funniest most successful guy in the room and bullies anyone that threatens that. and hes done that for so long that hes now just a washed up crazy old man. lorne michaels is probably forgiving of this, not because they’re old friends, but because chevy’s legacy as a cast member on snl is all he has left. if he were to actually ban chevy from the show, chevy would have a full on meltdown. with a difficult person like chevy, its probably a lot easier to just quietly distance him rather than straight up banning him
So... the particular John Goodman episode... when it was clear he was losing it mentally (when the 2nd Flintstones premiered)... was that his last time he was a host?
Milton Berle possibly the only man I haven't met who stabbed me in the back. Hes still funny tho. I get the sence he was trying and forgive him but still...
I don't feel sorry for Milton Berle at all. If you can't write new jokes or even have the capacity to understand your shtick is not funny to the audience you're playing to then you're not a comedian. It's not hard to write jokes - the hard part is performing on stage. Which he could clearly do.
Ok sort of, but I think you're wrong about how hard it is to write good jokes. Comedy like horror is a writing style that's blurry and super hard to do right, and extremely easy to do wrong.
@@Upintheairideas See, I don't think it's as hard as people generally believe. If you're a working comedian you have all the time in the world to conceive, craft, improve on, and find inspiration in everyday life for joke ideas. Most of us who have jobs won't spend even 1 minute on a wisecrack for social media or what have you. Joke-writing is a skill like any other that you can get better at with time and practice. It is only easy to do wrong when a comedian is reluctant to "murder their darlings" - which is a fault many, many creatives have.
@@willman85 You might be the first person I‘ve ever even heard of to have that take. I would personally disagree since context and specifically the crowd you are writing for has an incredible inpact on if a joke is funny or not. It is why you can have rounds of great jokes when with friend group. Because you essentially know that „crowd“ and vice versa. Jokes are almost always about twisting expectations, building a social (though not neccisarily personal) connection with you audience and about timing. Two of those are paremeters that shift, that aren‘t fully predictable. Timing can be learned, the rest can‘t. However a Sense can be gained for them. Which is why I don’t feel sorry for Berle ether. If he was a good performer he could get over himself and would know his audience. But he doesn‘t, seemingly just out of ego. And that makes him a fool who‘s failure is fully his own fault.
Milton Berle wasent funny but in his defense, I don’t think almost anything done in the early episodes are funny..Samurai delicatessen, Land Shark, roseannadanna. I’m sure that stuff was funny for its time but I think it’s terrible
I don't feel bad for Berle at all, he refused to listen to everyone telling him that times had changed and tried to get back into the spotlight with the same old tired racist jokes. Plus its hard to feel sorry for someone who frequently whipped his dick out in front of people.
Basically, steven segal was"The Rock"for his generation? Heard DeJay literally have contract clause protecting his characters! Anybody here wish corraborate?
That's not a fair comparison. The thing you're talking about is called an 'exclusion clause', where an actor retains the rights to any of their antics while on a live stage, which became very common after Janet Jackson accidentally showed her boob to everyone watching Superbowl 38's half-time show; it essentially says that if they do something really embarrassing, they have the right to veto its inclusion in the show going forward. Yes, it does also mean they retain their rights to any truly memorable characters they might create, but it's mostly there in case The Rock accidentally shows his butt to the camera. It's so common it was written into the SNL hosting contract, last I knew. The only person I can think of to ever use the "unique characters" part is actually Tom Hanks, for his David Pumpkins character, I don't really think The Rock is super-interested in making sure he retains the right to his "molester robot inventor" character. Also, wtf are you talking about. I'm not saying The Rock is a perfect person or anything but the biggest controversy I could find about him was that he sometimes shows up late on set, he's a friggin' national treasure at this point.
@@danielgehring7437. Sure with digging, some dirt about him could get unesrthed too. Was saying, because these ridiculous demand types been right into the rock's alley!
No. The Rock didn't want his SNL appearance to be about him being a wrestler like Bret Hart on Mad TV. Now how he's been since his first SNL I have no clue since I stopped watching around 2006, but the first SNL no, maybe later ones.

17:44 I feel like the only person in history who actually felt my stomach get sick when he looked at the camera and said the line about pollution
Did you really say "he had an existential crisis about his existence" ??!
jenny lewis as lucy's granduaghter is prefect casting
Wasn’t Milton Burle in a episode of the old Matlock
Yes he was. I literally just saw it a month ago. The irony of that appearance was that he played a character who was an old time comic who had to come to terms with how his shtick was no longer funny. Wow.
I’ll bet you a dollar were not done with these bad hosts yet. I know there’s more and also bad music guests I’m guessing.
Stopped at season one, myself. 😐
Thanks for the video!!
This was a nice compilation of these videos. I didn't even see the originals so I'm happy to see them all together right here. I was well aware of how awful Steven seagal was a host thanks to some other video I saw that talked about him, but I had no idea on the other two. First of all I never heard of the first guy, but I am shocked that Chevy Chase was such an awful person. I think I have heard that maybe he's conceited or something but I didn't realize how bad it really was.
My opinion. Milton Berle greatest comeback was his guest appearance on Fresh Prince of Bel Air. One last hurrah
Steven Segal was not any better!
I'm only huuumaaaan
Chevy Chase could quite possibly be the funniest human to ever exist
The chevy chase video was the first one i watched on this channel. Honestly with the way he acted on community i shouldn't be surprised that was his behavior when snl was still new and popular.
Good God, I don't know why you're a bleeding heart for Milton Berle. I sincerely could not care less
You gotta do the Charles Grodin episode.
Pretty funny that this compilation came out around the time Jason Reitman's Saturday Night came out.
Oh hey Trevor, I’m curious to know. What do you think about the upcoming Saturday Night movie coming out very soon? It looks really good overall I have to say. Especially considering it’s from director Jason Reitman. His movies have often been hit and miss but this new movie looks very promising however.
I kept waiting to see examples to support your analysis. Then wondered if I was getting trolled, then went to find the sketches to see how bad the reactions were
Steven segal looks and acts like a real life Terry Silver form karate kid....
The Tom Green/David Gray episode felt like Tom Green wrote it.
Well, Berle did have a habit of stealing less than stellar jokes
I want there to be a sequel to the Saturday Night movie about that Chevy episode.
especially bc the guy who played chevy really hit it out of the park
srsly, why was Michael Bolton in Steven Segal ep?
Probably because he was a musical guest. Like with Jon hamm and Michael Buble in one episode
damn i didnt know that about Lucille ball... im a huge star trek fan and we all have her to thank for its start. its sad hiw he career ended. damn
Like so much volleyball.
and I thought Elon was the worst host.
Not even close
Since there’s was a section about banned hosts, I want to bring up banned musical guests. In particular, the Replacements. (I am a huge fan of the Replacements aka the ‘Mats.) They were drunk and sloppy as hell and angered Lorne so much he banned them. Years later, the lead singer of the Replacements, Paul Westerberg, appeared again, but solo, as a musical guest. Because Lorne didn’t realize who he was.
If I recall correctly, they were only able to be on the show because John Belushi was a fan
Snl actually funny again though finally
chevy chase is a big baby. he needs to be the funniest most successful guy in the room and bullies anyone that threatens that. and hes done that for so long that hes now just a washed up crazy old man. lorne michaels is probably forgiving of this, not because they’re old friends, but because chevy’s legacy as a cast member on snl is all he has left. if he were to actually ban chevy from the show, chevy would have a full on meltdown. with a difficult person like chevy, its probably a lot easier to just quietly distance him rather than straight up banning him
I thought Charles Grodin was pretty bad.
So... the particular John Goodman episode... when it was clear he was losing it mentally (when the 2nd Flintstones premiered)... was that his last time he was a host?
Milton Berle possibly the only man I haven't met who stabbed me in the back. Hes still funny tho. I get the sence he was trying and forgive him but still...
What’s the deal with the voice…
Andy Kaufman?? What about him?
no.
What's the song playing in the beginning of this?
He(Berle) just couldn't face the fact he was old hat. I think it's called loss of identity
I saw that in the SNL movie
So when's the Elon Musk episode?
I don't feel bad for Berle at all, he refused to listen to everyone telling him that times had changed and tried to get back into the spotlight with the same old tired racist jokes. Plus its hard to feel sorry for someone who frequently whipped his dick out in front of people.
Where’s Andrew dice?
considering how bad musk was as a host... if mr seagul is still the worst host in the history of the show then that is fucking saying something
What about Andy Kaufman
The Rock was actually funny in most SNL bits Ive seen because he wasnt afraid of making fun of himself. Segal was obsessed with not dropping his phony tough guy persona instead of actually being funny on whats supposed to be a comedy show
@@AlexDelarge1990. You're sure? The guy literally has that contract clause protecting his characters!
Zappa
Putin's always glad when Seagall comes to Russia as he is no longer the worst person in Russia!!!😅
good video but drawn together isnt funny and no jokes are funny and it sucks but good video
Leave Chevy alone! Leave Chevy alone!
Kenan Thompson speaks woke
You're just old. Saying SNL isn't good anymore, it just means you're old.
Yeah, as one comment I read a long t8me ago put it, no matter a person's age, they'll pretty much always say that SNL peaked when they were 12."
Ive never actually met a single person in real life, young or old, who thinks SNL is good these days lol. The only rare times its funny now is usually always dependent on who's hosting that week
These are your pick for the worst? Where's Amy Schumer,Awkwafina,Rachel Bloom,Mindy Kaling,Rashida Jones,Greta Gerwig? Well"buddy"?
He’s only done three of these videos. This is just a compilation of the SNL works he’s done. The “worst” is just the series name. Had the series continued, I’m sure he would’ve covered some of those.
@@albertrobinson4576. Least introduced"this guy"(myself)towards the LovelyLivelyV!
Why are all your worst picks women, bud?
Also, sad to say, the series is pretty much dead. He might’ve talked about one of those people but that’s not happening.
@@jessicap7889. Well, today's crop just not funny. When was the last time Awkwafina said something genuinely funny?
@@erikbihari3625 Rachel bloom is funny. I loved her music videos on TH-cam
