The problem with Slovakia is that a lot of young Slovaks are leaving for Czechia or other more developed countries. So there is no push from young people against old(er) people. My Slovak friends just gave up on Slovak politics, seeing them as a lost cause.
Maybe that's because it is, not just politics but literally everything. I looked at the clock and it said that it's high-time to leave and never come back.
As a Slovak who watched this closely I want to add a few points. - current coalition has all the important positions now but our opposition is united and strong. Liberal & conservative parties were never as united as they are now. - Korčok had 1.2 million votes. He would win any prior presidential elections up till now. Pellegrini just abused the Macron's thoughts about sending soldiers to Ukraine and made this a number one topic. This unfortunately mobilized a lot of voters. - the controversial legislature which proposed decreased punishment for corruption was stopped by the efforts of our opposition and Constitutional court. Please do not write us off as pro russian. We are protesting all the time. Up to 100 000 people are in the streets nearly every week. Our NGOs are strong too and the opposition is winning in our cities and among our youth. Coalition will keep making mistakes and that will help us turn it around in next elections. Moreover, the coalition under PM Fico says one thung and does the opposite. It continues the humanitarian help for Ukraine and military help is flowing too, but only comercially. Our army cant send any more equipment but that doesnt matter that much, we already sent our artillery, AA defenses, tanks and jet fighters. We are watching this populist government and doing everything we can to slow or stop them. Hopefully the damage wont be too big after their term.
United? Bro they could not even protest together, it falled apart. About protesting, there was few protests wasnt that big as you are descrining. Fico and Pellegrini are not pro russian. They critize EU for the steps they are making, nothing bad about it. Coalition have all the major post because people want it like that, we decided. Stop using this pro russian narative its just not true. Korčok said that Izrael answer on Hamas attack was legitimate. I mean there are 20 000 CITIZENS casualties, that is okay? According to Korčok yes. Pellegrini had 1 400 000 votes so stop shaming your country, it is not true what you are saying
As a Slovak I have to say Great Job for avoiding much of the usual sensationalist and chauvinist BS that completely misses the point. One other key point, missed both in this video and also by majority of Slovak voters: President's role is largely ceremonial and has extremely limited powers (President can veto a legislation, but breaking that veto requires only a simple majority).
It's mostly ceremonial, not fully. The president has one key power - to represent Slovakia externally (e. g. at the European Council). Previous presidents just were too lazy (Schuster) or too stupid (Čaputová) to do it, so they delegated this power to the government. Korčok was determined take these powers back... until he was called out, then started to slander who even metioned it.

I am not worried about our "help" to Ukraine. We can't help them anyways since we gave them everything we could have during the previous government. But I'm worried that the corrupt politicians will go unpunished again...
Yeah I was hoping they'd cover what aid packages Ukraine stands to lose from this. I recall Slovakia initially had a lot of soviet era equipment to give which integrated well with 🇺🇦 forces but I had no idea if there was any left
"help" doesn't include just military aid. Ukraine needs money to maintain the state under siege, and they already produce many of weapon systems, ex drones, themselves.
One thing is not helping directly because you cant, actively making the process of help done by others more complicated than it has to be would be something very different. You want to keep what you have? Ok, just dont go full Orban, which you likely will.
I'm from Slovakia. I hope that Nato, EU and eurozone will keep them in check and won't allow them to do too much damage. Btw Guys Fico is pronounced "Fitso" not "Fiko" ;D
I have to commend on all of your Slovak names and party names pronunciation except Fico, which is pronounced similar to 'Fitso'. Apart from that great job!👍
Unsure why the other host, Nadja, didn't host this video, considering she's Slavic / Eastern European and thus the pronounciations would have been on point...mmmm.
@selcovoilucian8253 "Tbh Orban can blackmail the eu and not get punished" - he is the elected leader of a nation and has a right to voice the opinion of the nation he represents. If there is disagreement: handle it on a national level. You can send all your taxes to ukraine, nobody is going to stop you from doing so: but other nations can choose to elect people who do things in a different way.
This is going to be one of EU’s big overhauls in the future. But this needs the vote from these countries. And that makes it difficult. But it will happen evetually
@@csat1078 And EU can and actually should stop funding countries that are not prosecuting embezzling EU funds, which is exactly what Orban's government is doing.
I honestly think that if I were a Slovak I'd be more worried about the government trying to ram through 'reforms' legalizing their corruption and rigging the electoral system in their favor. Slovakia already dumped most of its equipment surplus into Ukraine, and it's sad to say that Ukraine has basically bled itself dry to boot.
As a person from Slovakia, I think this video is capturing the current situation pretty well. Though, I hate the current government for many reasons (one of them being their view on Russian war), they didn’t really ban all export of guns/help to Ukraine yet, but I wouldn’t share any sensitive information with them regarding Ukraine, if I would be any foreign nation.
yeah, our current government fortunately says one thing at home and does the opposite abroad. This way their voters are satisfied and our relationship with EU and NATO doesnt suffer as much. Thank god for that.
Man, no worries! Once Mr. Trump is back it will be him Orban and your guy who will be deciding who is gona get important info. and btw chill about that war thing. When mr Trump is in the office the war will be over in a day! 🎉❤
One day after Fico won the last election, a new company was founded and registered. According to the official record, the company's owner resides in Fico's party premises, and the owner's representative is Robert Kalinak, Fico's right hand man since the founding of his party. This company's stated purpose is the "procurement, manufacture and resale of weapons and ammunition". Soon thereafter, Fico stated that he would not allow the Slovak government to militarily support Ukraine, but he will not prevent private companies from doing so. His and Pelegrini's anti-Ukraine rhetoric are just a part of a scheme to enrich themselves on weapons deals with Ukraine. (Note: It doesn't hurt to follow Kalinak in the future. His son, Erik, is running in the European elections, and if he wins, his task will likely be trying to increase the prices of weapons and ammo for Ukraine.) The part about ramming through Orbanesque laws, however, is spot-on. While Fico and Pelegrini won't likely cause any harm to Ukraine, they'll do tremendous damage to democracy in Slovakia.
I am also afraid for the future of democracy in Slovakia. The next government (if there is any, but I hope it is) can try to reverse the harm, but as we can see in Poland right now, it is always easier to make a fish soup from a fish tank than to make a fish tank from a fish soup.
i think you forgot to include a very important factor for this victory.... the man is a Dreamboat, like he is so handsome he could be a model for catalogues
What made it so shocking is most Czechs couldn't believe on their eyes just how delusional Slovaks are now. Despite being cousins, we are like pole apart. We Czechs are fervent backers of Ukraine, every leader we elected remember the 1968 massacre by the Soviets; yet this didn't appear to be a thing in Slovakia.
Didn't the massacre occur in Prague, not Bratislava? And weren't the Slovaks forced in a union led by Czechs against their will? They maybe cousins, but that doesn't mean they should blindly follow your example... especially when the example is... let's say questionable.
There was nothing russian there. Leader of whole Soviet Union was Ukrainian Brezhnev. He decided to start the action with three Ukrainian commanders (Koshovy, Grechko, Pavlovsky) and one Belarusian (Yakubovsky). If this is what Czechs remember, then Slovaks are right - they should not help ukrainian invaders any more.
Slovakia is a democracy, Slovakia is not North Korea. So the democratic world should respect the results of democratic elections. We have the government we want to have.

a thing worth pointing out is that while Smer is anti war, they are also very much pro EU and Nato. So I doubt they would really try stop other EU and NATO members. They would much more likely be alright with any support for Ukraine as long as it doesnt involve Slovakia in some bigger way
Smer used to be pro-EU and pro-NATO. But something changed. Since the beginning of war, it seems that they are pulling Slovakia out of EU and NATO spreading anti-EU and anti-NATO propaganda. I'd say they have been bribed by Putin.
I am Slovak and your opinions are a wrong assessment. The new president Pellegrini is no sympathizer of Russia. He is a young person, his entire professional life connected with Slovak membership in the EU. Pellegrini and Fico say that the war in Ukraine has no military solution. And they refuse military aid to Ukraine from state funds - because our military capacities are weak, we don't even have a functional air defense! So we have our own defense problems. Otherwise, we help Ukraine - with commercial supplies of weapons, humanitarian, in the energy sector. The accusations that the government is pro-Russian are stupid. Slovakia is firmly anchored in the EU, we are in the eurozone and the Schengen area.We simply want to pursue a sovereign foreign policy, before 1989 we had to agree with everything that came from communist Moscow. Today we have to agree with everything that comes from the European Union, from Brussels? People in Western Europe do not have the historical experience of being forced to obey the only correct opinion, as we do. And one more thing... In the video, you talk about the OLANO anti-corruption movement led by Matovič. Well, we citizens of Slovakia know that this is not an anti-corruption movement, but Matovič's private political company, which at one time had 4 members (have you ever seen a political party with 4 members?)... Matovič is a mentally ill person who devastated the country for the last 4 years...
I am having enough of fellow European stupidity. I am somewhat center-right conservative leaning and have been very critical of some aspects of the EU construction. However, don't tell me that the EU and even NATO is worse for European countries. There are challenges, but on the whole it brought more opportunities for people in general. Also, Ukraine is indeed fighting a war against an expansionist authoritarian regime. They should be supported.
Now We should absolutely not do this, because It’s undemocratic and an Eastern thing to do. But… It would be Possible to win back Hungarys support by offering Southern Slovakia.
As a Slovak I have to say that it is very hard for me to watch this. I´m disappointed how this president elections ended. Let´s hope that civil society will keep up and watch over our democracy.
Slovakia has no social or fanancial influence on the continent (tiny country). Although it is a negative result I don't think it makes much difference. How often do we hear about Slovakia on EU contest? No much at all.
Slovakia is not pro-russian. As you said in the end of the video, we don't want to take part in this war. Slovakia doesn't have good experiences with either Ukraine or Russia. But we are still helping the war refugees. This hoaxes about Slovakia being pro-russian is offensive as hell. Only few old people in the country feel pro-russian. They are huge minority. And about the elections. Slovaks had three options basically. Mad Harabin, who can't control his emotions and is telling a lot of false claims, liberal Korčok, who got support from the liberal groups and Pellegrini, who has been viewed as a middle ground between those two. Also when it came to debates Korčok was very weak and had been only attacking Pellegrini. So I'm not surprised for the winner. We don't have a political party, which would actually represent the voice of an ordinary citizen. Hence the return of the Fico. People just wanted to get back pre-covid years, since Matovič has been acting like egoistic child and ruined what he has touched. Under Fico at least some things have been working out.

I have noticed the improvement in pronouncing the names TLDR has made, and it was obvious they made lots of effort in this video. There was just one problem - but with the most important figure: Fico's name is pronounced Fitso, not Fiko. Slovak is one of many European languages who pronounce "c" as "ts" (you can see it in Czech Václav Havel for example). I have to appreciate the near perfect pronounciation of other names though, especially Čaputová - I suppose that that is particulary hard for English speakers.
This is an example of why Putin doesn't really fear the EU or NATO very much. They both consist of over 2 dozen different nations, all with their own ideas, priorities, agendas and so on. In other words, they're divisible. It really doesn't matter what the issue is or which country or countries it is at any given time. If he can keep them fighting and squabbling amongst themselves over anything at all, he weakens them and strengthens himself.

Slovakia is interested in upkeeping trade & political relations, but that does not mean we are pro-russian. Slovakia will continue with financial and humanitarian help towards Ukraine. Our politicians request a a democratic deal for a ceasefire or peace. There's been a huge polarity campaign since COVID, that led so many to support the "progressive" parties, as it seems that it's the "educated" and "correct" thing to do, overshadowing the other parties. Their early campaigns, which gained heavy favoritism, were aimed at young people (many of which do not support democracy - they want to strip older people from the right to vote, and continue protesting against decisions that were favored by majority of the people in our country), with topics such as LGBTQ+ rights (there's certain processes which have unnecessary beraucracy, mainly around inheritance, getting a mortgage, and being an emergency medical contact or decision maker if the partner is unconcious or otherwise unable to make a decision on their own), legalization and decriminalization of marijuana (mainly boosted by arrests on young people who got caught during their probation period), anti-corruption campaigns, spreading fear that the ruling parties would leave EU/NATO, and attempts to discredit anyone from the opposing parties. Ukraine itself wanted a peace deal a few weeks after the war started. It was "blocked" by foreign countries. Ukraine does currently not have democracy, the corruption is insane. As someone who speaks daily with Ukrainian people and watches the state of the war and it's fall on Kyiv, I can tell you majority of the people would give up captured areas to stop having bombs dropping near their apartments, and killing their families. Mobilization has began for people unfit for war, many that suffer from epilepsy or other medical problems, with papers that give them exemption from being drafted are getting drafted anyway and dying on the front. As somebody who's living in Slovakia for 35 years, it's very interesting to see how foreign media skews their view by inaccuracies liberal parties use here. Yes it's true they lowered punishments, but you should also add they lowered them to EU average, felony charges for stealing started at 35€, they are now tied to the minimum wage, currently 700€ so petty crimes are actually covered under misdemeanors. Abolishing special prosecutors is also technically true, but then you should also add all of their responsibilities were not removed, just redistributed under their own departments. Lowering whistleblower protections is strongly bending the words. Previous whistleblower protections were so strong, they allowed just lying your way out of jail by accusing people that were in turn put into jail without proving they are actually guilty. And covering our culture minister ... well, you are on point there, she's a conspiracy nut, she is elected from extremist Slovak National Party tho.

According to Korčok yes. Pellegrini had 1 400 000 votes so stop shaming your country, it is not true what you are saying
As a Slovak I have to say Great Job for avoiding much of the usual sensationalist and chauvinist BS that completely misses the point. One other key point, missed both in this video and also by majority of Slovak voters: President's role is largely ceremonial and has extremely limited powers (President can veto a legislation, but breaking that veto requires only a simple majority).
nope, the President has major power over Judge nominations + nomination Veto = Mafia wants their president ....sooo much
+ appoints judges( this is very important)
The president's role is largely ceremonial, but the result of the election is basically a message to Fico "do what you want, we don't mind".

Fico and Pelegriny brought Slovakia to EU and NATO. This video is completely nonsense.
I honestly think that if I were a Slovak I'd be more worried about the government trying to ram through 'reforms' legalizing their corruption and rigging the electoral system in their favor. I love how your new host can perfectly nail all the names' pronunciation, but keeps mispronouncing Fico seemingly just to keep the brand continuity.
exactly!
Noticed that as well
Yes, they should be pronouncing it "potkan".
His son, Erik, is running in the European elections, and if he wins, his task will likely be trying to increase the prices of weapons and ammo for Ukraine.)
The part about ramming through Orbanesque laws, however, is spot-on. While Fico and Pelegrini won't likely cause any harm to Ukraine, they'll do tremendous damage to democracy in Slovakia.
Great for them. And it's his nephew, not son.
Erik Kalinak is not the son of Robert. He is his nephew
I am also afraid for the future of democracy in Slovakia. The next government (if there is any, but I hope it is) can try to reverse the harm, but as we can see in Poland right now, it is always easier to make a fish soup from a fish tank than to make a fish tank from a fish soup.

Thank you, Czechs, for the help. We appreciate it in Ukraine

@@Karibija It doesn't matter. They followed Russian orders.
If this is what Czechs remember, then Slovaks are right - they should not help ukrainian invaders any more.

a thing worth pointing out is that while Smer is anti war, they are also very much pro EU and Nato.
I'd say they have been bribed by Putin.
yes correct

Now Slovakia can share NATO data with Russia. Use your head. Ukraine also lost the USA as an ally. And for half a year now.
Robert Fiko 😭. It pronounced Fitso. C isn't K in Slovak. I can't listen to that
I'd doesn't matter
We should all stop anny involvment in the ukraninan afair
mainstream "non-oposition" facts.... LOL
Nice job from the presenter 👍👍👍
Only reason why Fico and Pellegrini won, is because they are slighly less shitty than the other guy.
Slovakia is destined to become the next Moldova.
Wtf? 😂

How so?

Macron's tactical ambiguity is looking like an unambiguously siht idea
The only shit ideas as the ones coming from German leadership where they make their resolute statement of "NO TO X" before inevitably backtracking 3-6 months later to "Actually okay to X". Rinse and repeat. At this point if the German chancellor said that Germany will never build atomic weapons, I'd expect to see construction of nukes within a year. Need to take their schizo medication so they can actually make logical decisions.
Fíkou je nádel.
I love how when someone chooses neutrality, they get "pro-russia" or "pro-putin",like wow.I can honestly agree with Slovak president who said "Slovakia needs peace" and i hope that we'il vote in similar politicians here in Croatia too
Well, if the neutral stance can bring an enemy to your door... Maybe you need to reconsider your choice
@@multienergico9299 Russia won't attack NATO. It's better to be at peace with them.
@@1nhof It is always better to be at peace, no doubt about it. But it is not safe to assume that the other part won't do anything stupid. Invading Ukraine was stupid, and here we are now.
@@multienergico9299 its not enemy if you keep friendly relations with them, remember Sweden and Switzerland in WW2

Slava to Slovakia 🇸🇰, time to think smart and not by us influencers
There are many ways to describe the thinking of the gov in Slovakia, free And smart arent any of them.
You're making these videos, just because Slovakia is thinking sovereignly
Hahahahahahh you are so naive hahahahahahhah
Majority of the people in Slovakia do not wish for progressive, liberal changes that are happening in the US or other EU countries. Some of the policies are straight up insane, and breaking down many countries. Majority of media in Slovakia are very liberal-leaned.
There's talks that women will also be mobilized soon and brought to ground-zero. This war must stop at all costs and as soon as possible. The US will scatter as they have to deal with the increasing Israel conflict with Arab countries.
it was a total SME(a)R campaign.
He is pro-Slovak president not pro-Russian
We have more freedom in Slovakia now
May be some people miss 1968 like many Hungarians seem to miss 1956.

Once the majority voting is implemented, non of these pro Putin politicians matters, it only means that the rest of the EU can distance themselves with the additional consequences of EU funds being deprived from these countries.
Its a democracy, but democracy also means disagreement and distancing one from another.
100% right.
You missed the fact Korcok has been working for Fico's government in the past.
Yes, as a civil servant. What exactly is your point?
@@patrikvavro1611 Did you ever worked for an employer who was against your moral principles?
Politics here is very messy on both sides, so be sure to not have one sided view.
"Abolishing special prosecutors is also technically true, but then you should also add all of their responsibilities were not removed, just redistributed under their own departments."
