As much as I like Veilguard, I can't help but feel that its much better ideas and more in-depth world building and lore was left in the books and cut from the game. I feel Joplin was more similar to what we expected from Bioware than the reboot. Some of the ideas from the artbook look exactly what felt like was missing from the game sometimes. A darker, shadier look at Minrathous, etc. Just a more nuanced look at the world, a more distinctive feel to the cultures and the many factions in the world.

So we didn't got new hints on Qunari's connection to elves, previously there were theories that elves experimented with dragon blood to create qunari, but from what we get they mixed dragon blood on their old homeland.

I got my artbook last week but didn't want to open it for fear of spoilers. After finishing the game yesterday I finally looked into it and there is so much interesting stuff. So many things I would have liked to see in game. Like rescuing somebody from the Fade, Cole returning or former companions as advisors. And there are definitely some things, that luckily never saw the light of day. Like tranquil Solas? No thank you! Lavellan greatly disapproves.
Seeing the concepts behind the Evanuris made me a little sad however. They had worked out all these personality details for them, like Elgar'nan's necklace, the trophies of the slain titans worked into his clothing and him wearing a wig attached to his crown (XD) that were never mentioned in game. And I think, these details would have made them appear so much more like people. Horrible people, but more gray instead of being just the big bads. And I loved the moments in Veilguard where you got a glimpse of that.
But on the other hand I would have like to see so much more of so much more. More Solavellan, more Solas, more Evanuris... somewhere you have to make the cuts I guess. 😉

It kind of annoys me that they changed his headdress shape from a full circle to the horns. It just seems like an effort to make him appear more evil and one-note. They really dropped the ball with him and Gilly, especially as it seems Solas had some kind of rapport with her.

    • @rilan_carnavon

@@vanyadolly Well, Solas knew all of the Evanuris for millennia. He must have had some kind of relationship with every single one of them. It would have been really interesting to explore those (beside his obvious mutual hate for Elgar'nan) or to see, how they were before using the blight. So many stories untold.
Don't mistake me. I am really happy with what we've got. I just wanted more. ^.^°

@@vanyadolly It's tricky. Post-Inquisition contents like Divine hunting Solas is thought about as soon as Inquisition's story was finialized. One artwork even got reused for Trespasser. Joplin had cool ideas but I think they would have been difficult to implement. Veilguard also felt like it couldn't fulfill its potential to the fullest yet. Joplin's wild ideas would have be impossible.

One thing the art book makes me wonder is whether The Lords of Fortune were conceptualized as a means to use leftover concept art from Joplin. That section of the artbook is pretty heavily aquatic in nature, and I always thought that felt a little out of place amongst the factions, but as a cost/time savings measure, it makes a ton of sense for them to exist.

Yes, this bugged me so much! The fragment of Mythal says that both the waking world and the Fade are denied to her. So we are without a doubt not in the Fade when we talked to her. The Black City should've been visible from the Lighthouse, in Hezenkoss's quest, and also from Solas' prison.
It looks like an oversight more than anything.

The artbook makes me wish we got their original vision. That early game looks like what everyone wanted veilguard to be and it factored in past worldstate.
The artbook makes veilguard look like a shell of what this game could have been and it's genuinely sad that this isn't what we got.
It's odd that when bioware got the permission to go back to making a single player game they didn't pick up where they left off with post inqusition/Joplin and instead reworked like the whole story into something that to me seems genuinely lesser.
This artbook is heartbreaking tbh and I hope if we get another dragon age, it's a game more like the artbook and less like veilguard.

I think the human ears are a simple oversight (or she made herself a new body?) and Solas saying "human" in that one regret memory is more a stand-in for "person". Elvhen are "the people", they wouldn't have thought of themselves as the elven race yet..?

With regards to why Solas was making himself tranquil in that one ending, maybe it was to avoid the temptation of using blight magic or becoming corrupted by it? Now that we know the blight’s link to the Titans, perhaps it would have different interactions with the tranquil akin to how they can safely handle lyrium?

Thanks for showing the artwork., I have played through the game and got all but 2 achievements. I am glad I prepared myself for not having high expectations so i could enjoy it as an action RPG with limited choice, so that I could enjoy it.
I do feel that Solas, while being the strongest part of the game, did very little to deserve the good ending for him, which bummed me out a little. None of the characters really stuck with me and I caught myself skipping Bellara's dialogue instinctively - and I cannot tell you why other than I didn't engage with it. I wish we had the opportunity to treat our companions with the same nuance that we did Solas.
I am now sitting with the same feeling as when I had played Hogwarts Legacy - a good game, but nothing really stuck. Going forward I will not be looking for my "adult" fix in Bioware games, but it was fun while it lasted.

i understood you ignored my comments until now even if i was one of the first ones to comment, maybe because i went against veilgaurd blind trust or yours but i wanted to say something before i unsubscribe
first of all i wanted to say thanks for all the videos you made until now, amazing lore videos of the games you and all this community love, this lore of Thedas is a big part of what made me love the games in the first place as a lore addict, so with your presentation i was hooked
then the Veilguard came, as i understood you were with bioware team talking about the game for months, obviously you couldn't know what exactly they are doing but for some reason you never spoke out, even after you were allowed to talk you never said anything bad about the game, not only that but ignored all the comments who asked about it. you are not a game review channel but i feel like you were bought by bioware, i do not know if this is true or not, but it is sure feel like it,
lets leave the gameplay of the game and all the woke problems of the game, lets focus only on the lore prospective
they made the "Antam" the war faction of the Qun to leave it and rebel? all this while we know Sten is the head of the Antam?
They made the titans the reason for the blight? really?
and this is just the tip of the iceberg
they ruined the same lore we loved and talked about so much, they destroyed cities with out thinking about it, they destroyed Denerim with one line and not even explaining anything
i am sorry, Ghil, it might not be fair but you made me feel like we do not care about the same lore anymore, because you have something with bioware team or because you are too excited to get anything new to talk about you let this company ruin the one thing we love

Nr2: literally 0 lore is ruined over the Antaam leaving the Qun. The Qun isn't magical it's just a belief system. For all we know sten got tired of seeing what he thought was a barbarian society run free and he wanted to step in
And the titans being the origin point for the blight is actually fine, be for real now. It expands on the dwarven lore making what happened to them even sader, they got the worst of the blights and it was because their future were stolen by the elven gods

The Antaam are known in the story to be one of the most important factions in the Qun, and a big part of the Qun is to make sure people wont become Tal Vashoth, so now you tell me one of the biggest factions left the Qun without a reason and not caring about the fact Sten was a big follower of the Qun last time we seen him
Now about the titans, what we did know for sure before Veilguard is that the taint (the blight) came after the mages entered the black city, we know the titans blood is lyrium and it is pure blue and alive, we also know that lyrium can be corrupted to red lyrium by the taint,
we also know that the taint somehow connected to the old gods, because after awakening an old god with the taint they lead the blight,.
we know lyrium is source of magical power, we also know that lyrium came before the taint, so your entire argument does not make any sense
they ignored the story before hand and made every mistake possible, from marketing to story telling, now even talking about how the fighting is as bad if not worse
you can think i am not a fan, but i am, i had theories about the rest of the lore all the time, from thinking the old gods (the dragons) are the constructed body of the elven gods solas put away and thats why they called the mages to the golden city in the first place to get the taint and release it to their bodies in the deep roads and more

@ yeah originally there was 7 factions with the 7th being Qunari. Not sure if you’d be able to play as them like the other 6 but he was supposed to be the link to the new Qunari government dealing with the Antaam going rogue.
I believe we also were supposed to go to seheron or par vollen to meet with Qunari and build faction rep with them probably. They most likely cut it for budget reasons but I do still wish they kept him in and made him like Harding with her inquisition faction.
Just make him have missions in tevinter, treviso, etc.. looking for Antaam and such then for his big story missions make a zone like Hardings deep road missions in par vollen or something but only a small story part really quick. Would have been cool to see him and Taash interact over the Qun

Thank you for the artbook review! I won‘t play veilguard because its not at all what I wanted to play after inquisition. BUT i‘m a hughe fan of the original artbook and I think I will get this one as well!

    Archdemons are high dragons.
What was so special about Urthemiel's soul to conduct a dark ritual.
It shouldn't be a soul of the evanuris.

What are your thoughts about the characterization of Solas in the game? Be honest.
I received my copy of the artbook yesterday and I'm actually furious at how much stuff was scrapped.

I just ordered mine as well. What could have been! 🙁Cultures and factions consistent with the lore, our world states still incorporated, Wardens being badasses, Solas actually doing something, villains that are more than one-note bad guys... And I think that warden is supposed to be ours. If they ever appeared, they wouldn't be able to give them a voice.
Joplin was the single-player sequel they worked on after DAI. It was cancelled because EA wanted a live service game (project Morrison), which was then cancelled again in favour of the game we got.
There's so much that appears to have been cut but is still referred to in the game for some reason, like Solas being able to kill Rook through their dreams, Ghil subjugating the Qunari, the first elves modelling themselves after dwarves rather than humans which makes a lot more sense, etc. Can't help but feel DAV was a bit sloppy with the lore.
I'm glad I spent money on this rather than DAV

And "Morrison" even though was conceived as a live service game, was meant to be focused on Solas and the elves rebellion, then someone decided to make it about the power of friendship instead.

@@dreadwolfcult That's even worse. I suspected that some of the changes in "atmosphere" were more recent, but that explains a lot of why the writing is the way it is. It does feel like they didn't have the time to revise it properly.

I'm with you on the Grey Wardens, I have never been too excited about them myself. I think that's why I never really got the appeal of DAO; I really played more for the companions, not so much the story of the Wardens. I'm not sure if I'll make a Warden Rook.
I love the little bits of this video where you talked about the council, especially about the scrapped, dapper Qunari man, Saarbraks, that you all didn't even see him during the focus group meetings. I am VERY curious to know why he got cut, whether it's because of budget or some other reason.

From my perspective the writer themselfes were either too lazy or otherwise unwilling to get to know the setting.
Now with the "GENIUS" idea to reboot the series they probably got told from outside sources how things connect and work.
With their more than limited Imagination and non-caring attitude we got Guardians of the Veilguard
Probably the fault of the ancient elves too if we ask them

@@Rue_Khan it's not just that...they droped most of the things that are substory strains and lore...basically just took the most barebone version of the "main lore and story" and then just cooked something out of it...
