    I love wirtuals stance on technology "I don't understand how it works and why it does dumb things and that makes me mad" but also "I don't want to understand how it works, don't tell me how it works, just let me be angry and wrong". You've gotta respect the self-awareness

      "I also don't want to update anything or reboot" and then wonders when everything stutters. Granted, I don't reboot my server too many times a year, but that's Linux and I don't run all kinds of random crap like games on it. Windows box gets rebooted *at least* when I decide to update GPU drivers, which seems to be about every two months, typically more often, and computers are something I proverbially live and breathe.

    On driver updates: you are almost right, but there are still good reasons to update your drivers
    The two reasons to update your drivers:
    reason 1(the good reason): Drivers have to deal with hardware, and hardware is terrible to deal with. Thus, people will periodically find bugs or clever ways to use the hardware better. This is especially true for new hardware
    reason 2(the tech support reason): Updating drivers is very simple, at its most intensive it just requires a restart. And most of the time the risks are very low. So it makes since why it is so often a recommended step, because if it fixes the problem you don't have to do something more complicated.
    That being said, if your hardware has been out for a while(like a year), a lot of the growing pains for the driver will have passed. This means that updating your driver probably has very little upside most of the time, unless you have a specific reason to think you need to update. Here are the specific reasons: (1) you are experiencing weird graphical artifacts, especially across multiple applications, (2) performance is significantly impacted in ways not otherwise explicable, or (3) the update fixes a bug or makes a performance improvement. To be clear, you should still update your drivers periodically(at least once every few months) to ensure bugs get patched, and you should update your drivers more frequently if your hardware is newer(new hardware has more problems).
    A lot of the same logic applies to software updates

    • @chronovore7234
      @chronovore7234 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Its a two way street, the game devs have to take advantage of the driver update. A driver update will do nothing for the frames if Trackmania hasn't put out an update to go with it.
      Most driver updates are just optimizations for new games coming out anyways, I only notice driver problems on new games.

    I feel there needs to be a thing where Wirtual tries Rocket League and a Rocket League player tries trackmania. Here's an analogy to explain why drivers stop working after a time:
    Imagine you're a cook in a restaurant, and your job is to prepare dishes according to specific recipes. These recipes are like the drivers in a computer; they tell you (the cook) how to use the ingredients (the hardware) to make a meal (the software's functionality). Now, say the restaurant changes its menu and adds new dishes. These new dishes require different cooking methods or ingredients that aren't in the old recipes. So, you need new recipes (new drivers) to handle these changes.
    Likewise, when a computer's operating system or software gets an upgrade or a new version, sometimes it includes new features, or ways of doing things, that the old drivers don't know about or can't handle. When this happens, you need to update the drivers so they can work with the new changes and keep your system running smoothly.

    The randomized points method in round two here feels almost like the opposite of Cup of the Day: Where the latter punishes failure and risky strats, this kind of score system instead seems to reward doing consistently well: As long as a playstyle finishes high enough most of the time, it can survive absolutely eating dirt a few times here and there.

    • @ZoulouEcho
      @ZoulouEcho 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The point ladder is randomise at first, and ordered at second.
      So in a round it could be [100,99,99,98,95,…]
      And on another it would be [99,87,84,80,69,…]
      It’s RGN but fair RNG

      Wirtual is on the money here though, he’s playing the same game, same drivers, if there’s suddenly lag, it’s caused by something else like the map or an openplanet plugin.

    Do you know how many layers are you playing on? It's not just about drivers. There are ton of stuff that runs in your background. Even small update to the game can cause issues, then there's stuff like windows which holds big responsibility for performance aswell. Stuff like CNET, directx or even anti-virus can sometimes interfere sometimes with your performance. Since these things are constantly updated there's always possibility something will interfere with something else. It's not like you have Gpu that only calculates your game.

    when it comes to drivers, I feel like the importance is often overstated. Having old drivers won't inherently make things worse, so long as those drivers are *stable*. When the manufacturer posts new driver updates, it's usually micro-optimizations and bug/compatibility fixes, which can each give a performance boost. In egregious cases, an old driver might have a bug that causes significant slowdown, or forces the engine developers to implement a less efficient workaround temporarily, but then when the issue is resolved with a driver update and they remove the fix, your game suddenly slows down for seemingly no reason after a minor update. It's highly uncommon for something like this to happen though, but it's worth considering. If you're having GPU related issues, drivers are almost always a good first step for debugging possible issues
    In this particular case, I highly doubt it was a driver issue, as others also reported the issue, and it's a known problem with Trackmania's netcode. Old drivers might be losing you 1 or 2 fps, but 80+ is almost certainly the fault of the game, unless your drivers were shipped with a major bug
    The only case where I would really consider it to be a driver issue is if this was an absolutely brand new card bought within the first 2 weeks to 2 months of launch, because the initial drivers often need some work to iron out

    A surprising number of times windows updates can interfere with existing drivers or other software, and require updates to fix. Otherwise, "update your drivers" is also good advice to start with since sometimes the bug you're seeing may have been what was fixed by the newest version. In that case it's not that the new version broke the old one of course.
    Either the chance of running into the bug was always there, or was introduced (or made worse) by something that updates (a different driver's update, like for your motherboard//chipset for example, or from a windows update, or from software updates).
    Of those, usually windows updates are the problem.
    Importantly though, more often than not, the new version is just fixing bugs that have been around and weren't recently introduced, and people telling you to update are doing so because it's much easier than trying to figure out whether or not niche issues are actually related to the myriad of minor bug fixes that come with new driver versions already.

      PCs fail most likely when started.
      Hardware reason: every component heats up quickly, often before cooling takes place. You also have energy spikes that can break electrical components. Same applies in reverse when cooling down. Metal expands when heated up, so there's constant stress when your computer is often restarted.
      Software reason: when your computer is shut down, changed settings are saved to the internal system/registry. That also includes corrupted data and broken files.
      When you now start your computer, it loads up a bunch of files including the maybe corrupted ones. Your system might be reliable but the more you change about it, the more errors it produces. As long as it runs, nothing is changed. But loading up your system will cause problems.
      Think of it like a mobile phone: how often do you restart it? And if you do, how often is it due to an empty battery or system fault?
      You don't need to restart an electronic device and since the temperature is relatively constant it even prolongs the longevity of your computer.

      With modern power saving states, the PC will shutdown most of components when going to sleep. Like all of your devices besides CPU, RAM will be powered down, cold and not getting any current.
      The programs start up properly because they were closed down properly, compared to just resuming from suspension they were pushed into unknowingly.
      I like only restart my phone because something fucks up and reboot is the quickest fix for it.

    Updating drivers has 2 purposes: filling newly found security holes and making the card work better with some new games. The former is why you should update from time to time. The latter makes it easy to ignore the whole thing for awhile and just wait like a year between updates. No reason to get the latest drivers, if you are just playing the same game all the time.

      Fun story, almost every bank still uses IBM System/Z mainframes, which are binary backwards compatible with System360 mainframes from the 60s. I worked on a COBOL compiler for them about 10 years ago. But yes, updating drivers is important.

    It's hilarious to me that Wirtual ended up being basically right about the drivers, and about AMD's driver quality completely by accident, and chat is spamming "as a computer scientist" without knowing how gpu performance actually works, and what is causing problems with his FPS. I can guarantee updating his drivers wouldn't have improved performance on those maps. It was almost certainly either to do with the large number of players in the lobby bottlenecking cpu/network, or the maps being poorly optimized or baked because of how they were imported. People will watch a Linus Tech Tips video in 2018, then carry dogmatic beliefs about how computers work from it for the next 5 years lmao. Enjoyed the video regardless though!

    Hey Wirt. According to your "why should I turn off my PC". Every capacitor on ur motherboard have estimated hours of work time that they can work without losing it's integrity. Usually it's around 2000h. When the capacitor is worn out, your PC still might work, but the power supplying to GPU, CPU and other critical components might not be stable which will cause PC to be laggy af. The lags you experience on maps are not maps/game issue. So if you don't use it, turn off your PC.

    I've never understood how a game like this can suffer so badly from framerate. Each map is an isolated chunk, and controls are arrow keys... Wirtual playing on a PC pretty much the best money can buy yet still struggles with lag. Fix your damn game and I might buy it lol

    • @Sagedurk
      @Sagedurk ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The input controls have no impact on the framerate at all.
      Spawning a lot of objects consecutively will take time.
      Unoptimized graphics settings could be a factor. Some types of graphics settings have a bigger performance hit compared to the visual change
      Whatever the root causes are, I can guarantee you that the input controls have no bearings on the performance
