    I actually love hearing the Finnish language 😂 I'm American, speak Spanish and have been to finland around 7 times and never tire of going 🧐

    • @DeadlyBooRose
      @DeadlyBooRose 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is exciting. I'm also American and know a bit of Spanish, and this past Memorial Day I decided I was going to visit Helsinki next year.
      Do you know any Finnish? Is it easy to get around if you don't know the language?

    • @Xx13Nathan66xX
      @Xx13Nathan66xX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      DeadlyBooRose I know only very basic Finnish. You do not need to know Finnish to get around Helsinki though! 😁 Nearly all Finnish people speak incredibly perfect English. In some places, like the pharmacy or the supermarkets they’ll start speaking to you in Finnish, if you don’t reply in 1 second they’ll talk in English. They don’t find offense so don’t worry.

Nevertheless when walking on the street and listening people around me speaking finnish, many times I had the impression to listen "italian sound". As well as, in my business experience, whenever listening finnish people speaking some italian I was always surprized how good was their pronunciation.

    Oh my gosh, you are so wrong, that Finnish language is the most beautiful language I have ever heard; I am an American, and can only speak English, however I have heard many languages, probably at least a dozen and Finnish is my favorite; it is difficult to describe I suppose; My least favorite languages are probably French and any of the Slavic languages; Also don't care for German so much; Italian sounds sort of friendly. I once heard people speaking Albanian and I would like to listen to that sound some more to get a better sense of it, same with Turkish. However Finnish by far is just awesome sounding, I love it. Of course, I am biased as I lived in Finland a long time ago/Helsinki/Toolo.
    In terms of foreigners speaking English, I would say similarly, that I like Finnish accent and Italian Accents the best.

    I just started learning Finnish! I live in America but my great grandparents immigrated to the US from Finland. Finland is currently number one on my list of countries to go to! Speaking as a native English speaker, one of the things I've enjoyed about the Finnish language is that all of the letters are pronounced so all the words so far have sounded like how they're spelled. I'm getting pretty good at reading Finnish, but I have to speak it very slowly. And also the one phrase I learned on the first day was "Mina olen valho." My computer won't let me make the correct letter "a." I joked with my husband that I was ready to go to Finland because if I just went around saying that I would inevitably attract the correct authorities to help me lol

    I grew up hearing the language amongst my elders, so now my pronunciation is good, but two years of studying in college, I can only remember small phrases. And the swearwords of course! Finnish has the highest ratio of vowels to consonants, the only thing that beats it is Hawaiian! For a lot of people, all of these vowels I think give a softer sound to the language. If you want to hear something that sounds really rough, some of the Slavic languages, especially Russian, can sound very harsh. I knew a fellow who had taken basic Russian courses, he ran across another Russian student, and they both started shouting at each other, but what it was, they had simply memorized a dialogue and it was mostly them saying hello to each other, but when they shouted, it sounded like they were having a terrible argument!

    Finnish sounds like Spanish or Italian, because it has lots of vowels, unlike the Germanic languages that have lots of consonants. Finnish has vowel harmony: you don't have rear (velar) and front (palatal) wovels ever in the same word. Not many languages have it, even in Estonia only Võro language/dialect has vowel harmony.

    Toivon joskus matkustavan Suomeen. So on yski unelmistain. Koska olen unelmoija :). Never give up even if the world is about to end. ;)

    Finnish doesn't sound like Russian. Finnish words are longer than Russian. It's not often in Russian you can find the words with two or three vowels which stand next to each other without a consonant. Finnish words sound slower than Russian words. And it sounds like you make pauses in words or have problems with speech if you compare Finnish speech and Russian. In Russian consonants do not prononounce with a pause. Long or short vowel are not important when you pronounce words. In Russian a vowel is longer than other vowels in a word when it is in a stressed syllable. We do not use two same vowels to show a long sound. For example, you won't find 'aa' in words. If the vowel is long or short in Russian, it doesn't change the meaning. It doesn't matter if you pronounce long or short vowel. A long vowel in a word more often show in Russian rather your personal attitude (for example, surprise, shock, enthusiasm, love, special attutude, thinking) than it can change the meaning of the word.
